  • Loved, Loved, Loved this one!

    By A7GT0WQKKDP0V on 2006-01-01
Fancy Nancy is a book I can relate too, even thirty plus years after being a little girl who would have LOVED to have my "fanciness" appreciated by my family! I appreciate the wisdom and creativity of our little protagonist - she is a good peer role model for the young picture-book set.

I am buying two copies - one for my seventy-three year old mother who is a "Fancy Nancy" herself and also for myself... my children may borrow it to read, but I will keep it in my room to read-aloud and laugh and laugh and laugh!

Oh - a special nod, too, for the "fancy" illustrations. Loved each and every one.

  • Not a great example

    By AZG81PSU5GJOR on 2006-03-28
Someone recommended this book for my children. After reading a copy, I decided against it.

This book seems cute, but it is not an example I would like my children to follow. It's more than just dressing up. Nancy looks down on her family because they are not "fancy" enough. This may seem cute because Nancy is just a kid, but I have known too many people who think like this well into adulthood. The ending is just barely a lesson about love and acceptance.

  • Terrible message--why teach kids to be pretentious?

    By A2T4SJTJAQ5AIN on 2006-03-23
I would give it zero stars if possible....

My friend's mother-in-law got it for her new baby. The title character, Nancy, is pretentious and obnoxious. She thinks here family is not fancy enough because they dress conservatively. She thinks everything sounds fancier when said in French and needs to be over the top.

Why would you encourage children to act like that? It's bad enough there are so many grown-up prima donnas out there. I know this is just a kids' book and I probably shouldn't take it so seriously. I would never expose a child to this kind of thinking.

  • Completely and utterly charming!:5++

After running across Fancy Nancy while surfing amazon.com, I went to Borders Bookstore to see it in the flesh and was instantly captivated. It's a good-sized picture book with the most remarkable illustrations imaginable! There's even glitter incorporated into the book's cover. Having a "fancy nancy" granddaughter who turns five later this month, it will make the perfect gift (and if I ever need an illustrator I'm calling on Robin Priess Glasser!!).

Jane O'Connor's story is about a little girl who loves being fancy (you should see her room!). No one seems to understand that lace-trimmed shoes do help her play soccer better, and sandwiches definitely taste better with frilly toothpicks stuck in them; but, Nancy eventually convinces her unfancy family to fancy up and go out to dinner one evening. They all have a great time until disaster falls (well, not really a big deal in the scheme of things, but certainly so to a very young fancy lady). She finds out her family still loves her even when they all end up covered in ice cream sundaes...oops, I mean parfaits. She also learns that there's no fancy way to tell someone you love him/her, except to say, "I love you."

This book is precious beyond words. I'm having second thoughts about parting with it. I might have to get another copy for my little one. Oh yes, and it's up for a Quill award (consumer choice award)in the best children's illustrated book category. The awards take place this very next week (Oct 10) in New York City.

One thing I know for sure: I know how I'm going to fancy up my black pumps when my husband and I go steppin' out tonight!

  • Fancy Is As Fancy Does!

    By AOV9AIX4UE5BB on 2007-01-03
I bought this beautiful book for my fancy 3 year old granddaughter, Mary Mace, and she absolutely LOVES it. I read it first and now I want my own copy! The illustrations are magnificent---vibrant, alive and dazzling on every page. The story is educational and instructional. Nancy loves everything fancy from pink boas to sparkling tiarras and high heels....but alas, her family is plain. So Nancy decides to give them "fancy" lessons to which they willingly comply. In the end, Nancy comes to realize that plain is not so bad, either, as long as your loved. This is a light-hearted, well-told story which I highly recommend for girls of all ages.

  • Fabulously Fancy - and Fun too!
    By ADUHYDLN11EF0 on 2006-01-29
I just found this book today and am so excited. The text and illustrations of this terrific story are real winners. I agree with the other reviewers comments - and want to add the perspective of a teacher. Nancy likes things "fancy" - words, dress up, food, manners. She frequently refers to things in "normal" AND "fancy" lingo. I will use this book with my first graders to talk about vocubulary and word-choice in their own writing.

  • A Breath of Fancy Fresh Air!
    By A1ZF8WEOXJ8SUW on 2006-10-10
Fancy Nancy loves fancy clothes and knows fancy words. When she decides to teach her family how to be fancy, the results are comical. How will her family help when she falls on her face on her big night?

Encouragers in a strong family really can help each member to be creative and happy! And, isn't it nice to see a successful, family with a mother and father back in literature again?

What a terrific story to help introduce vocabulary development! Readers will be motivated to learn fancy French words and replace "plain" words with "fancy" words. Research says there is a strong link between vocabulary and success! Nancy is on her way!

The brilliant illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser in Fancy Nancy bring the text and story to life and extend discussion possibilities.

  • Everyone needs Nancy
    By A1TWOZ9GFIXVB6 on 2006-11-12
My granddaughter (age five) loves this book because, like Nancy, the more ruffles, flourishes, and flounces an object has, the better she likes it. My elementary schoolteacher daughter loves this book because her fourth-graders' adverb and adjective vocabularies expand painlessly because reading this easy story is fun. I liked this book because Nancy's family is so middle class--not affluent, not deprived--and is so understanding of their little prima donna. The illustrations add a lot to the story, being realistic with just the right touch of whimsical pizazz.

  • Fancy Nancy
    By A1VNKTNNN7OIJT on 2006-01-31
This book is fabulous!!! It's the newest equivalent to Eloise. The illustrations are just
superb and kids LOVE it. I read it at a school and the children were laughing out
loud. It's great to just have fun with a book..no heavy agenda..just fun! I just purchased
4 books to give on Valentines Day! What a great read!

  • Girls like being dazzled
    By A2SA4CXU4175AR on 2007-08-25
I bought this book because my best friend's name is Nancy. My three year daughter is discovering the frilly side of being a girl and loves to read this book over and over and talk about the pictures. She has even been inspired to dress fancy and dress me fancy. Little girls will relate to this story even though there isn't a deep message. Sometimes a light hearted frilly story is what a girl needs.

  • What a delight!
    By A3VLO15ABZGGVU on 2006-02-09
An Aunt sent the book to my 2 daughters (ages 5 and 2) for Valentine's Day. Both children absolutely loved this charming tale. Today we are having a "Fancy Nancy" inspired party at our home. We are going through closets to find all things "fancy" and we will be dressing for high tea! Mommy is even getting into the act. Books such as this create memories to last a lifetime.

  • Funny Little Girls
    By A3ITWDRNL3LE6T on 2007-04-12
I came across this book very recently and it made me laugh out loud! I didn't find it to be pretentious or "written by adults for adults" as one review stated.

This is a sweet little story about a fancy little girl and her family who love, support and appreciate one another.
I was pleased that there was a mother and a father in the story and a little baby sister as well.

The story teaches that it's o.k. to be who you want to be, and that as a family, we can be different from each other but still have fun together trying things out that other family members enjoy.

The illustrations are excellent--vibrant, cheerful, girlish and very detailed.

I shared this book with my sister and she and I had a good laugh over it as well, and even reminisced on being little girls ourselves.

I definitely recommend it, whether you are a "Fancy Nancy" yourself or whether you know a "Fancy Nancy"...either way it's a fun read and makes for a nice gift.

  • Mah-vel-us!
    By A3CQS93UWHFF37 on 2006-03-30
The story and illustrations in Fancy Nancy are "mah-vel-us." If I were still teaching first grade I'd share this with my little "darlings," and then we'd have a delectable tea - scones and all.

  • Our new favorite book
    By AR1WG3HAWUDMC on 2006-05-24
The incredible illustration within this book will capture your attention and your heart immediately. I love this book and so does my four year old, who is quite fancy herself. This book makes a perfect gift for any little girl who enjoys playing dress up.

  • Amazing Book
    By A1RARUE6LM51CK on 2006-09-19
We bought this for our 18 month old daughter, who is now just shy of 2 and both she AND her 4 year old brother LOVE THIS BOOK! They fight over who gets to read it before bed and they know the story so well now they can recite the lines. This is definitely our favorite!

  • teacher review
    By A86LJ01K6XARC on 2006-10-01
As a teacher and mother, this book is darling. Not only does it present itself perfectly for writing descriptively, but it also has a wonderful message in the end. I love this book!

  • A birthday present...
    By A13NWNOTW4L2NQ on 2006-11-10
I bought this book on a recommendation for a librarian friend, for a "fancy" niece's 4th birthday. I did read it, and loved it, I just hope my niece loves it as much as my daughter & I did when we sat down with it. Terribly cute, and a great lesson for all.

  • a new fan of Mrs. Glasser
    By A1CPJFQH55Z23W on 2006-11-18
I am a great new fan of Mr.s Glasser's work, re: her new book, "Our 50 States," which is absolutely amazig in it self, So, thought I'd first start with her "Fancy Nancy" book. What a joy to view such iilustations like this, with such movement through the characters body's and faces, that express so well what they are thinking. You can tell how her prior career as a soloits, and principal dancer with the ever loved Pennsylvania Ballet, shines through her work now with such wonderful movment through the characters bodies. A true joy. I will now need to look into her oher books.

  • Fancy Nancy...
    By A2FVKJS9UG6PHG on 2007-03-24
Bought this as a gift for my 5 year old great-niece. Found this on the New York Times best seller list so I figured that was a good recomendation. She did like the book but based on the two books (gave Library Lion to her brother) she chose Library Lion to be read first.

  • For a VERY young kid
    By AWN422BQYHI3A on 2007-12-17
If your daughter is over 4, don't buy this. It's for very young girls. The art is beautiful but the text is super duper minimal.

  • Do you really want your child to think like Fancy Nancy?
    By A9BWYA82ADB0W on 2008-09-16
How will this book make children who don't have fancy things at home feel? I think materialism is a vice that doesn't need to be taught in a children's book. Enough people learn this on their own, why try to instill it in a 3 year old? If you want a book about a cute silly girly-girl, buy Madeline.

  • Made me smile
    By A1G7SGZEIFUPOG on 2006-02-11
My daughter truly enjoyed this book. It has inspired us to have a dress up party with some of her friends. I can see the value in being an individual through this book.

  • Ohh Laa Laa! - That's a fancy way of saying Wow!
    By AP7Q5GZ071PIW on 2006-08-03
"What is a fancy girl to do?" Read this book, that's what! Nancy is the litterary embodiment of every girls need to beautify, glamorize and ultimately accessorize our worlds! In this adorable (that's a fancy way of saying "cute") book we meet Nancy (who loves to be fancy)and her very plain family. When Nancy gets a "stupendous" idea (that's a fancy word for "great") to teach her family to be fancy they can't wait to get started. This is a wonderful story that speaks to the heart of every little girl with a "fancy" flair. It tells us that it's ok to be a little different and to share ourselves with the ones we love most - and when things don't go exactly as we plan , our family is always there to pick us back up because they love us. Beautifully illustrated by Robin Priess Glasser, Jane O'Connor's story is brought to life and given another layer of depth that speaks to even the youngest of readers. This is my 3 year-olds FAVORITE book, in fact she has given it as a gift to many of her friends. I will leave you with O'Connor's last lines to summ up this fantastic mother-daughter bonding experience. "And all I say back is, 'I love you.' Because there isn't a fancy - or better - way of saying that."

  • Fancy Nancy
    By A1M3PS0GLENTB1 on 2006-11-09
I gave this a 5 rating because I haven't heard any bad feedback. I bought this book for a little girl that I've never met. I met her mother through a transaction on Craig's List and found her to be a very nice, single mother who had just moved to a new area and was trying to find a way to get some presents for her little girl's upcoming 6th birthday. I decided to send this book and a couple of others just to help out.

  • Fancy Nancy is Great!
    By A31HDDM2E622BL on 2006-12-05
My 3 year old daughter can't stop talking about this book!
From the bold pictures to the warm story, this is a must-have book for anyone who has an imaginative little girl.
I especially like the fact that Fancy Nancy has a family that's willing to listen to her wants and needs... while helping her out when everything doesn't go according to plan.
Everytime my daughter asks for ice cream now.. she wants it with Fancy Nancy's sprinkles on top!

  • My 4 yr ol Daughter loves this book!
    By A36YCA0E5DQWIR on 2007-09-12
My daughter asks me to read this several times a week. She thinks being fancy is the best and Nancy is so good at it! I don't know of many little girls who won't love this book! If she likes to play dress up, this book will be a hit!!

  • adorable!
    By ARA94D39GG3ZS on 2006-02-06
This book is adorable! My daughter loves it as much as I do.

  • BEST CHILDRENS BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    By A3R1FCM0HMMODZ on 2006-02-19
I received this from a co-worker who saw it on "The Today Show" and HAD to get it for my 2 year old twin girls. I have to say my girls have a lot of books and this is by far my favorite. It is so cute and so funny and FUN TO READ. We just love it and recommend adding it to your library, whether it's for you, your daughter(in-law), grandmother, mother. It is a treat for all. ENJOY!

  • Every little girl...
    By A2VGTDDKOXPHLK on 2006-03-04
Every little girl is a Fancy Nancy deep down. This story lets her out! Who doesn't like boas and sparkles and flowers and glitter? This story explains it to the parents (and other grown ups in a little girl's life) so they can understand the difference between plain and fancy. I recommend this book for every little girl and for the little girl in every woman. Truely a book to enjoy and delight in!

  • Sooo Cute!!
    By A37PBNTO0GNH9G on 2006-03-15
I got this book about a month ago. My 5 year old daughter fell in love with it after the first reading. We had to read it 4 more times right in a row. I think it's because she can relate to Nancy who is sooo FANCY. My daughter loves all the accessories that Nancy uses to help her family become "fancy" like "Nancy". I think my daughter really likes it because there is someone else out there that likes to be "fancy" just like her!! This is a great book. We can never read it just once!!! Read it and enjoy it and then try to become Fancy like Nancy!!
