Dear Reader:

In a previous life, before the time of Plum, I wrote twelve short romance novels. Red-hot screwball comedies, each and every one of them. Nine of these stories were originally published by the Loveswept line between the years 1988 and 1992. All immediately went out of print and could be found only at used bookstores and yard sales.

I'm excited to tell you that those nine stories are now being re-released by HarperCollins. Naughty Neighbor is the eighth in the lineup, and it's presented here in almost original form. Usually when I edit these books I do some modernizing. For instance, I change VHS to DVD, and roller skates to Rollerblades, and sticks of gum are now pieces of gum. I do this because the books were meant to be contemporary (as opposed to historical), and I don't want the reader to have a time disconnect. In the beginning of the original Naughty Neighbor, my heroine throws a handheld phone into the toilet, and the next morning she goes into the bathroom and sees the "slim silver antenna caught between the toilet lid and seat." Okay, so most phones don't have extended antennas anymore, but I just loved the image . . . so I left it in. And I don't know how many women wear front-closure bras anymore, but that got left in, too.

Naughty Neighbor is probably the most romancey of all the Loveswepts I wrote, but there's still a small mystery to unravel. Louisa Brannigan is a no-nonsense, hardworking press secretary, fighting her way to the top of Capitol Hill, with no help from her annoying neighbor, Pete Streeter. He receives phone calls all night long, he steals her morning paper, he thinks jeans are formal wear, and worst of all he's involved Louisa in the disappearance of a pig. So this is the story of a pig in Witness Protection and love being found by a workaholic woman and a fun-loving man who makes terrible pots of coffee.

Enjoy!

  • An Entertaining Bit Of Fluff.

    By A1RECBDKHVOJMW on 2003-11-09
Louisa Brannigan, Washington D.C. press secretary to Senator Nolan Bishop, becomes involved with her upstairs neighbor, handsome hunky Pete Streeter, as they set out to solve the mystery of a disappearing pig. Yes, a disappearing pig! In this 1992 forerunner to Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, it is possible to recognize the author's outrageous humor, and even glimpse the prototype for some of her later characters. This is a short entertaining read, one that you should be able to finish on a long flight or a trip to the hairdresser. It's fun fluff!

  • Déjà Vu ?

This a reprint of an early Janet Evanovich romance originally published in 1992.

Louisa Brannigan is living in a duplex, the man who shares the other half is about as inconsiderate as you can get. He parks in her spot, steals her paper and gets calls all night long.

Pete Streeter is a Hollywood screenwriter who is following/researching some crooked political officials and their dealings for his next screenplay. When his investigation inadvertently gets Louisa fired from her political job, the two team up to uncover the truth and find a missing pig.

Like all the early Janet romances, this one follows a pretty basic formula, with slight alterations here and there to keep it interesting.

    1) Plumesque female with unruly curly hair.
    2) Super alpha male.
    3) A domestic pet that devours human food.
    4) A nutty Grandmother.
    5) A lot of mental head slapping and eye rolling by the heroine.
    6) A weak but entertaining mystery.

Though it follows an all too familiar and predictable path, it's still an enjoyable afternoon read. It's serves it's purpose at entertaining, though it will lack any surprise and mystery for those of us who are Janet Junkies. Naughty neighbor is silly fun and a light easy read.

Louisa Brannigan lived a quiet orderly life until the morning her neighbor Pete Streeter stole her morning newspaper. Tired of him taking advantage of her whether it was parking in her parking place, hogging the community laundry room dryer, or the obnoxious calls in the wee hours of the morning, but the last straw was his theft of her paper. She knocked loudly on his door yelling at him in the process, and he chose to ignore her. Furious that he could totally disregard her, she grabbed her broom and started banging on the ceiling. When Pete went to confront Louisa, he found her door wide open and walked right in to settle her down. He was stunned by how attractive she was, as was she because she was expecting some neanderthal.

When Louisa and Pete found themselves being shot at that night, he quickly pulled her under his protection, but circumstances only got worse from there. He was attacked in his apartment in the middle of the night, and she was fired from her job as press secretary to Senator Noland Bishop just because she knew Pete. Feeling that something was smelly in Washington, he convinced Louisa to help him investigate. Pete thought it would be interesting to base his next screenplay on because he could just feel a scandal waiting to be uncovered. He just hoped he could keep Louisa safe, and in the process convince her that they were perfect for each other.

I have read most of her earlier works, and this is the best of them. Louisa is a very funny character, and was perfectly paired with Pete. They are charming together.

  • Alway up for a good light romance

An early work of Evanovich reprinted by Harper this light read holds up today. Even with magenta jackets and front clip bras). Some mystery, fun and supporting charactors make this a fun and fast read. Enjoy it for what it is and early Evanovich. It is not Plum but a forshadowing of her. Enjoy.

The service we received getting this book was just out of the this world. I used to belong to a book club and the prices were horrible as well as the delivery service.

  • Just ok
    By A1JTGGLOZSRZVL on 2008-03-28
I have read all of Janet Evanovich's book that she has out and this one I did not like this one the plot is extremely slow and all about a pig.

Janet has once again accomplished a funny book and worth the read. She has a way to keep you interested and laughing. It is hard to put the book down.

  • Boring! Boring! Boring!
    By A2ZPUOKXRQK9T6 on 2008-03-28
This was the biggest disappointment since Jill Chirchill's Accidental Florist (which was just the biggest waste of paper)!

Tragic. What happened to Janet Evanovich???? This was even more a nothing than usual! Talk, sex, talk, sex, talk, sex. No action - nothing. Just so very disappointing. Predictable from the first page and just plain boring (have I said yet that it was boring?). Perhaps she needs to read a Jennifer Crusie book or two before trying another between the numbers.

  • RIP OFF!!
    By AEFAXHGPRW66Y on 2008-03-28
What a waste of time and money. Ms. Evanovich appears to be cashing in on her current celebrity in passing off this mediocre story to an unsuspecting public. It is certainly not of the same caliber as her more recent wrtiting efforts. The story and writing are sophomoric and should have been left in the attic to gather dust. For shame Janet.

  • Read it for entertainment...

I enjoyed this book alot and it was fun to read. I like the different turns and situations the caricatures get into. Also I like how strong the women are and also their spunk. I also enjoy how hot the men are. When she discribes the surounding and the caricatures in the book it's easy to picture it/them. It was a good way to escape the daily grind for awhile. I recomend this and others by Janet Evanovich.

  • Can this really be a JE book?
    By A3D4W0Z1B4P2Q0 on 2008-04-08
This book is by far the best book JE has written in a long time. A page turner that you cannot put down! Spicy, hot and exiciting is exactly what JE readers have been waiting a long time for. I had to keep checking who the author was because I have not seen Janet ever write this way except for maybe book#4 and #9 in her Stephanie Plum series.

This is a typical pre-numbered series romance novel from Janet Evanovich. They're delightful, intriguing, but my question is, why don't people get to know their neighbors when they just move in? A plate of brownies (bought or baked fresh) can eliminate a lot of misunderstanding. The road to romance doesn't have to be so frustrating, but I guess that's what makes it interesting. Several times I would have just liked to have shaken both Louisa and Pete to get them to be sensible. Otherwise, I really did enjoy the book.

  • Audiobook version is awful
    By ASGI7E0AJ8H5X on 2008-06-02
Honestly, I don't This know if it was the story itself that was so bad, or if it was hearing it read by someone who sounded like my mother. I just couldn't get into the romantic scenes - the dialogue sounded so hokey and corny. And the way the narrator tried to do an accent for Kurt, but then kept forgetting to keep up with it - so sometimes Kurt's dialogue had a really bad accent and other times not.
I don't mind stories where the main characters start off hating each other and then fall in love by the end.. but seriously - these characters had like one chapter of hating each other and then were in love like 5 minutes later. It was just bad.
This was my first ever audiobook, so maybe I need to stick to print books. Or maybe I just need to stick with Stephanie Plumm and pass on the rest of Janet Evanovich's story lines.

Louisa is going nuts, her upstairs neighbor is making sure of it. He is getting calls at all hours of the night and her portable phone picks up the signal, meaning she is never going to get a full night's sleep again. Adding to this offense is the fact he snatches her paper, and listens to her conversations through the walls and vents. When she finally meets him though he is also one of the most handsome men she has ever met before. Too bad he is pushy, and gets her little car vandalized, and oh yeah may be the reason she is fired from her government job.

Pete Streeter doesn't know what the little mousey woman from downstairs is doing to him. But, he can't seem to live without seeing and talking to her. Then, suddenly, she might be in danger because of him. Now he is setting out to make sure she is safe, though he is the one that has convinced her to help him figure out what the deal with the missing pig is really about. She has the right contacts in the government after being a press secretary in the Hart building.

Will Louisa trust the feelings that she has for Pete are being returned and that she isn't just another fling for him? Also will she finally take control of her life and do what she wants, and not what is expected of her?

Naughty Neighbor is a rewrite on an early J. Evanovich romance tale and in this one she appears to have updated some of the slang, etc. I found this story to be humorous and a fun read. While it is a lot more romantic than the Stephanie Plum series it is still a strong stand alone who-done-it with a nice romantic side story. If you are a reader of contemporary romances then you will like this story. Also in Naughty Neighbor you not only have a pig as a centerpiece of a story but an independent cat named Spike. You gotta love a cat named Spike, especially if he is owned by a smoking hot bad boy, turned screen playwriter.

I was so excited to read this new (or old) book of janet's. Then I started to read it and it was so boring. Like another person wrote, the book is about a pig.... This is the worst book I have read in a long time. I just hope her new Plum book is better..

Janet Evanovich's books never fail to entertain. Even though this was not a Stephanie Plum book, it was funny, light and a great summer read.

This is typical Janet Evanovich. It is a quirky romance that has you laughing out loud. Not as good as the Stephanie Plum books but a great read.

  • An Enjoyable Read
    By A3QJM0RNUXQ3WV on 2008-08-01
If you're looking for a unique set of characters, a mild mystery and spicy sexual tension, you've come to the right place. Louisa Brannigan has the most obnoxious and rude neighbor. He steals her morning paper, parks in her spot and his phone rings at all hours of the night. Despite all of his flaws, Pete Streeter is a fine male specimen, and that is what creates such an internal battle for Louisa. When her car is demolished by a bunch of thugs and she loses her job as a Congressional aid to Senator Nolan Bishop, she teams up with Streeter to get to the bottom of the conspiracy that led to it all. A missing pig! Filled with flirtation, a simple plot and zany mystery, Janet Evanovich gives her fans a very enjoyable read. A precursor to the successful Plum series, Naughty Neighbor contains all the aspects that make Evanovich such a successful writer and a pleasure to read: a sassy female lead, a chauvinistic yet sexy male, a simple mystery and sexual tension spread throughout the pages. Naughty Neighbor is a quick read, perfect for the beach or a night alone. Valerie Jones mrsvaljones@netzero.net
