  • Calm, wise, honest and helpful

Oh, I wish I'd had this book when my daughter was younger! It is directed at parents of kids aged 2 to 6. Maybe for her next book Betsy Brown Braun could do a book for kids aged 14 to 16. My daughter's 14th birthday was yesterday. Betsy, please hurry.

"Just Tell Me What To Say" is just that: a collection of situations with scripts of what to say to kids. It is calm, wise and completely honest. It has great advice. On the topic of swearing, for example, tips include suggesting funny alternative words to swear words ("Fooey-spitooey!" "Rats!") and that parents should never wash out a child's mouth with soap.

    Chapters:

    1. SMALL TALK IS BIG TALK. Communicating with your children
    2. "TOMMY JUST DOESN'T LISTEN." Discipline do's and don'ts
    3. "IT'S ALL MOLLY'S FAULT." Sibling issues
    4. "HOW MANY BITES `TIL I CAN GET DESSERT?" Children's eating habits and behaviors
    5. "GET YOUR FINGER OUT OF YOUR NOSE!" Manners and social graces
    6. "IT'S NOT FAIR!" Day-to-day parenting dilemmas
    7. "HOW DID THE BABY GET IN YOUR TUMMY?" Learning about the Birds and the Bees
    8. "WHY DID MOMMY'S HAIR FALL OUT?" Talking about serious illness
    9. "WHY IS MY GOLDFISH FLOATING IN THE TOILET?" Learning about death
    10. "MOMMY AND DADDY HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL YOU." Talking with your children about divorce
    11. "IS THE FIRE GOING TO COME TO OUR HOUSE?" Answering questions about natural disasters, terrorism and war.

  • Every Parent Needs a Copy of this Book!

    By A33HKBORIT9KH6 on 2008-02-29
Before I picked up this book, as any parent, I thought I already had a lot of the answers. After all, I'd already survived one teenager.

From page one of Just Tell Me What to Say, I didn't have enough answers, and thankfully, this book would give me them all.

Throughout the chapters of Just Tell Me What to Say, I found a treasure trove of information and advice, many things I did not have in my parent arsenal of answers... but do now! By the end of the book, I felt empowered, ready to take on questions from my toughest toddler, and comforted by the fact that I have an invaluable resource handy, should I need to deal with more sensitive issues like illness and death.

Just Tell Me What to Say covers it all, from sex to divorce, to rudeness in public and picky eaters. The author, Betsy Brown Braun, provides tips and scripts, and oodles of advice, written in a fun, friendly, "parent to parent" style that's easy to identify with and comprehend. Ms. Braun is truly an expert and her advice, priceless.

I could go on and on praising the merits of this book, but in a nutshell-I'm convinced Just Tell Me What to Say is a book that every parent and childcare professional needs. Get a copy and read it today, you'll be grateful you did...and your children will be, too.

  • Finally - Betsy's book is here!

    By AJCPAN2OT0ZX6 on 2008-02-20
I have personally known this author for five years and have benefited from her sound and practical parenting advice. I have just ordered several copies of her new book to give to all my family and friends with young children as a go-to resource for all those challenging parenting situations we all find ourselves in. Betsy's tips are like nuggets of gold - trust me - you will love this book!

  • Thank goodness!

    By ATWODJW5DT94T on 2008-04-19
Thank goodness! This is NOT another "Raise-Your-Child-According-To-Me" book. Betsy assumes you already know a little something about parenting and can handle most day-to-day situations. But she also knows that we're all going to get stuck occasionally wondering about the right thing to say. THIS is when you pick up her book and look for help -- and you WILL find it. It's brilliant! Think of it as WD-40 for the parenting brain.

  • No longer perplexed!

I find myself referencing this book several times a day, everyday! It is an invaluable resource that has already made me a better parent and has helped our lives to run much more smoothly in the midst of raising 2 small children in a complicated world. Thanks to Betsy Brown Braun for making the world of parenting a much better place.

  • Understanding childrens behavior
    By ABXBH7PIADNYV on 2008-03-04
Betsy's book is interesting with much good advice that is easy to understand and implement. The book provides answers to many common questions about handling certain situations. Over all, I felt the advice was sound but parents should also trust their own instincts and search out other resources.

  • Attention All Grandmothers
    By A2911BU84Z6I37 on 2008-03-16
Where was Betsy Brown Braun when we were raising our own children? While we certainly managed, how much easier life would have been with Just Tell Me What to Say on our nightstands. What an amazing resource. In addition to being packed with valuable information, the author's style is direct, no nonsense and humorous - all at the same time. She is obviously an expert on the subject of raising healthy, happy children but she talks to you like she is talking to a friend. I have given this book to my daughter (mother of a 1 year old) and daughter-in-law (mother of a 2 year old) who both know that I think they are wonderful mothers. We have already had meaningful conversations about a few topics in the book and know that there will be many more opportunities to reference it in the future. I have also started giving this book to my friends who are becoming grandmothers. Just Tell Me What to Say is definitely a quick refresher course. The only request I would have for Mrs. Braun is to please come out with the 6-10 year sequel within the next 4 years.

  • Very Helpful!! Opened my eyes alot!
    By AZ8BRBHBUCDZ0 on 2008-03-24
I enjoyed this book! It opened my eyes to why things I was doing, weren't working!!

  • A must-have for any parent!
    By A2ET8ZLUJHIT9L on 2008-03-24
    This book is heaven-sent!

I had been combing the shelves for books that would help me find the way to talk to my son in an age-appropriate way (he's 4) about death and the life-cycle, and hadn't found anything that seemed right to me. Then I came across this book which not only gave me an overview about how to discuss death, but provided a "script" that I could use. Happily, the entire book is as useful and I found myself using the "scripts" for situations that I hadn't expected to find myself in, the very week I bought the book!

I highly recommend this book for parents who are looking for the appropriate words to use and tone to take with their kids but aren't quite sure of the best approach. The writing is terrific and her point of view and perspective is sensible and open-minded.

I've already sent the link for the book to every mom I know, and I've had it on my night-stand so I can use it as a refresher whenever I need it.

    A must have!

  • THE best book!
    By A1MCSPK9PYUSKL on 2008-04-05
This is the best parenting book I've read. I have two boys (2 and 4), and most every topic has been an issue within our household. I've recommended this book to all my friends, and those who have purchased it are also singing its praises. I love the author's "scripted" responses -- takes all the guess work out!

  • Easy to read, practical advice that worked with my kids!
    By A23AID1SO0YKCG on 2008-04-15
It works and gets to the point quickly.

I have a stack of parenting books, many of them I haven't finished. Braun's book is easy to read and gave me useful advice that made an immediate difference with my two boys (5 and 6).

Along with Siblings Without Rivalry, this is my go-to manual for help when I'm tongue-tied or spinning my wheels with my kids.

  • She is my parenting Guru
    By A17471WFHBFSNB on 2008-02-26
The author has a great sense of humor and her advice and tips are invaluable! It is the common sense ideas that we all wish we could come up with on our own in the heat of the moment. If you read this book, you will feel more prepared when those difficult to answer questions come up. You won't walk away after your conversation with your child thinking to yourself... "I wish I said blah blah blah" She gives you the actual words. I bought several copies to give to my friends.

  • Practical, sensible advice at last!
    By A3GW83HMLQLAND on 2008-02-29
Betsy Brown Braun's book is great - such a helpful guide to navigating the constantly tricky waters of parenthood! Her advice is easy to understand and easy to implement. The book answers so many questions I have had about how to handle certain situations - it feels like it was written just for me! I have a 4 year old daughter and a 2 year old son - and I think I'll be reaching for this book many times over the next few years. Betsy's love of children and her strong desire to help build strong family connections comes through in all of her advice. I highly recommend this book to any parent of young children!!!

  • A Must-Have for Every Parent
    By A3S2PKAMZ3K17Z on 2008-03-09
No matter how loving or well intentioned you are as a parent, it is inevitable that you will hit roadblocks in your ability to deal with a particular behavior or situation. The author tackles the topics that seem to cause the most exasperation - including sibling issues, discipline, and eating - with intelligence, humor, clarity, and groundedness. Her "Tips and Scripts" provide detailed guidelines for in-the-moment responses, so parents are never caught off guard. What's more, she helps parents stand in kids' shoes to illuminate why kids make the choices they do - and once you have this perspective, what to do next comes much more naturally. As a family therapist and parent educator, I will highly recommend this book to moms and dads seeking wise answers to tough parenting problems.

Betsy Brown Braun is genius. Her straight-forward, sensible and honest style will be a great comfort to anyone who is seeking information about parenting. I feel the lessons I have learned from this book that I am using to help guide my son will serve to make him a better, stronger, healthier, more independent and wiser human being. And this book also teaches me how to approach him in the most positive, nurturing and honest of ways...invaluable tools when you are trying to "parent" so that you can be heard and understood. • Just Tell Me What to Say
    By A1R0GEM5QRD96Y on 2008-03-17
As a grandmother of 8, I've found it's not always easy to keep my mouth zipped when it comes to commenting on disciplining toddlers. Betsy Braun's book solves the problem! I've given a copy to each of my kids to use with their children. It's not only a great resource for them but opens discussions between us. Thank you, Bets!

  • Invaluable Assistance in Child Rearing
    By A23KHUZZVYRE3R on 2008-03-18
None of us are perfect when it comes to raising our children. During each day of our child's life we, as parents, are confronted with new situations - most of which we are unprepared for and have to deal with on the spot. Betsy Brown Braun's new book: "Just Tell Me What To Say", is well written, clear and logical, and prepares us for some of these situations, giving us tools to handle them and confidence that we are responding in a constructive manner. I highly recommend this book to every parent of young children and to all grandparents as well. We may not be perfect, but we can try to be better!

  • Definitely worth considering
    By A1VQNRLLX7L5T3 on 2008-03-20
Just Tell Me What to Say is a new book on parenting by Betsy Brown Braun in which she draws on her experience as both a mother of triplets and years of counseling parents. The book is about "dealing with the bumps" (xii). Some of the chapters give helpful advice on general subjects like communication, discipline, behavior, and manners. Other chapters can be used for reference when certain occasions arise such as discussing death, sex, and divorce. One of the useful aspects of the book is the reoccurring "Tips and Scripts" section which gives example statements of what to say to your children for each of the topics addressed throughout the book. Though the work is well organized, clearly written, and offers much-needed advice, I cannot compare its usefulness to other books of its genre since I have not read other related works. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth looking at for parents of young children.

  • I love this book!
    By AWH7RSYP13LYC on 2008-03-29
I've been asking Betsy Braun Brown what to say for many years now. I first met her when my oldest child attended her pre school and I continue to seek Betsy's advice in (and out of) her parenting classes. I am thrilled she finally put pen to paper and made it so easy for parents all over to share in her common sense advice. I often find myself without the right words to say to my kids and this easy to read book gives me the answers. I keep a copy of the book next to my bed, so I am prepared with the right words to say when the next sticky situation arises.

  • Indispensable
    By A1OFB48NPXKSQF on 2008-03-31
After reading all the reviews, I'm not sure what I can add except to say that this book is indispensable. I am a junkie for parenting tips, and I've never read anything as straight forward and immediately helpful as "Just Tell Me What to Say". I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old, and I've used nearly every suggestion in this book...and I can testify that they all work. My extraordinary sons, who are very well-adjusted and reasonable, were raised on these tips. I have been taking Betsy's classes since my oldest son was 2, and I have no doubt that my sons are thriving because of the amazing advice I have received and implemented. This book captures all that advice, and it is presented in the most organized and effective way imaginable. Every parent should have a copy of this book and use it as a bible for parenting.

  • Great book- Invaluable advice
    By A14C1AESFIDIQ7 on 2008-04-01
I love this book. I devoured the whole thing in one night, dog-earing pertinent sections that I have gone back to regularly since I read it.

Her scripts for "backtalk" and whining are really helping me deal with my almost five-year-old I also really like the chapters on explaining death and world concerns (aka terrorists) to children.

The fact that there are actual scripts is my favorite part. It really gets straight to what we really need when we're dealing with issues with our kids.

I'm sure I'll use this book even more than I did the "What to Expect" series when my kids were babies.

  • MUST HAVE FOR ALL PARENTS
    By A2ZTQB9VCGMYOZ on 2008-04-21
The best book I've found so far! Practical ideas for all parents. I've implemented a lot of the tips and it works wonders!!!!!
