Essentials of Corporate Finance, 6/e by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan is written to convey the most important concepts and principles of corporate finance at a level that is approachable for a wide audience. The authors retain their modern approach to finance, but have distilled the subject down to the essential topics in 18 chapters. They believe that understanding the “why” is just as important, if not more so, than understanding the “how,” especially in an introductory course. Three basic themes emerge as their central focus:
1. An emphasis on intuition—separate and explain the principles at work on a common sense, intuitive level before launching into specifics. Underlying ideas are discussed first in general terms, then followed by specific examples that illustrate in more concrete terms how a financial manager might proceed in a given situation.
2. A unified valuation approach—Net Present Value is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. Every subject the authors cover is firmly rooted in valuation, and care is taken to explain how decisions have valuation effects.
3. A managerial focus—Students learn that financial management concerns management. The role of financial manager as decision maker is emphasized and they stress the need for managerial input and judgment.

ok, but...

i think that the guide that came with my book, which shows pictures of the slides that professors are supposed to use was completely usless, if you have to purchase this book for a class, try and get a used copy. It is not worth the price you have to pay. There is another book by Breyli and Meyers titles Corporate Finance which is much more comprehensive and much better.
Horrible Book

The only great thing about this book is its small size and thats about it. The text doesn't do a very good job of explaining the ideas and concepts. Say you are given certain parts of an equation it doesn't really show you how to use to components to solve for the right number. Instead it gives you a wonderful GENERAL overview of an idea that is minimal in explanation. I'm almost at the point of flipping out because the lack of explanations and I'm only on Chapter 2.
A Difficult Read

Corporate Finance is a difficult subject. This book made it extremely difficult. Terms were not explained clearly or covered enough for anyone new to the subject to get an understanding. I used the web along with the text to get examples of what should have been more clearly illustrated in the textbook. I was very disapointed.
Not sure why someone rated it poorly

I'm an MBA student with quite a number of courses finished. I'm over half way through the finance course that uses this book and have found it to be written very well. The example problems are great, and the explanations are thorough. Our professor did make available the answers to the questions at the back of the book and used the powerpoints developed by the author. All in all the only drawback I could find was cost (as usual with college texts). As a side note, several students did use the 4th edition in our class with the permission of the instructor and did just fine.
a sorry college level text book

This book is required for a Finance course. This is one of the worst college level textbooks I have ever been exposed to. I am taking this course as a requirement for a 3rd college degree so I have bought a few textbooks.
There are answers to every other problem and not one explanation as to how the answer was derived. Oh wait!!!, you can buy the accompanying student workbook and there are some semi-explanations there.
If this book is intended to be a teaching tool it has failed. The authors deserve an F and should reconsider themselves as "professors" or educators.
My university will hear about this total waste of money.

I'm a senior at UofKentucky and bought this book for a Finance class. Like most business classes I've had, the book is way overpriced for a "new edition" that is basically the same as old editions.
On another note, I've been in the class over a month now and so far every thing we've talked about(which is pretty much straight out of the book) in the finance class has been virtually the same as the accounting class I took(balance sheets, income statements, time value of money, etc).
I am over-all disappointed with the finance class and it's corresponding book, but just maybe a lot of overly priced books will pay off in the end with college graduation on my resume.

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers on this book; I did not find the book to be well written or easy to understand. Maybe if I had had some financial management courses prior to this one I would have been able to see through some of the gaps in the explainations and examples.

This is the best selling product in this market at top tier schools of business so there is not much that I can add to that. My book arrived promptly and was in very good condition. The price was about half what new is at the campus bookstore and 2/3 the used price. The condition was much better than typical used condition.

This book covers what it needs to cover, but some concepts are a bit cloudy and hard to understand. This book can still be useful, but may require other resources in order to clarify the material that the book isn't clear about.

This is a great finance book that makes learning easy. to get the most out of it you need a finance calculator like the hp bII. it shows how to use the calculator to find the answers to finance problems.

This is a great book. Very easy to read. Very easy to follow along with the examples given. Some of the practice problems take some extreme thought or extra lecture by the prof. to know how to do them. Other than that, this is an excellent book!

Don't be excited about this book's small size and light weight, the text needs more examples to support you while doing homework. Breif chapter explantions caused me to nearly fail my class. Was NOT a gret book, in fact many students complained to the Dean regarding this book. Good luck.

Amazon was great about refunding the cost. The seller never got the textbook to me and was not very good about getting feedback to me on what was happening with the textbook. I finally got an email confirming that it would not be to me in time for my midterm (order 5 weeks earlier)so I contacted Amazon to refund the full cost.
