Cost Accounting by Horngren By A24505CR98NLLV on 2004-02-06
A strength of this book is that there are many color diagrams throughout which illustrate/highlight the material. The treatment of process cost accounting is thorough and highly simplified with many detailed examples to illustrate the computation of equivalent units. In process cost accounting, it is critical to understand the physical flow of costs, as well as, interdepartmental transfers and modified cost assumptions. In addition, there is a thorough treatment of managerial cost accounting in the areas of discounted cash flow, internal rate of return, compounding, depreciation and cash flow, net present value, uncertainty, inflation, capital budgeting, payback and the accounting rate of return. Lastly, there is a good treatment of decentralization and transfer pricing. The book is worth the price of admission. Classic problems from this text have been replicated on some form or another on professional and collegiate standardized tests. This work helps to support what is taught in a collegiate finance course, as well as the cost accounting element. The thrust of a cost accounting course is for the B or better student. There is a fair amount of work in this course. As such, it is geared for accounting, finance or economics majors. Quantitatively oriented students will enjoy the presentation as well as a wide constituency of teachers in academe. Even college administrators would find this text useful for preparing budget schedules and interdepartmental cost analyses. Engineering companies would benefit by having a detailed analyses of process costing and managerial accounting on individual construction jobs.
A standard text for cost accounting By AUHG8KSHI529U on 2002-10-24
If you are looking for a single volume "bible" on cost accounting, this is likely the best book in print today to fit that bill. It is comprehensive in scope yet has many strengths to ease comprehension and aid readability. The topics are grouped in six main sections each with several chapters on that topic. Since it is unlikely that you will read this reference / text book left to right as you would a novel this organization helps in finding what you are looking for and focusing on the area(s) of interest. There are many helpful illustrations and a good use of color as well as chapter summaries and all the exercises you could ever hope for. A very excellent feature is the use of application problems that take you step-by-step through building an Excel spreadsheet. This is tremendously useful. The web support is also a good help as well as the streaming video vignettes. I honestly find this topic very interesting and the 11th edition of this book to be a very valuable resource.
This is an Excellent book!!!! By A1WNVRGZP59SW2 on 2005-12-29
This is an Excellent book!!!!
I used this book in my cost accounting class last semester. I love this book in any ways. The book is very precise. Even the language itself is excellent. Compared with another book "Intermediate Accounting" by Donald E. Kieso I used, they're just like a heaven and a hell. From reading the book, I can tell how great the Stanford University is.
THE BOOK IS EXCELLENT FOR STUDENTS IN INDIA. By on 1999-03-01
I HAPPEN TO READ THE BOOK IN THE INSTITUTE OF COST ACCOUNTANTS OF INDIA'S LIBRARY. THE BOOK WAS WONDERFUL. MOST OF THE PROBLEMS SET IN OUR FINAL EXAMINATIONS WERE TAKEN OR COPIED WITH MINOR VARIATIONS FROM YOUR BOOK. THEREFORE IT IS VERY USEFUL FOR STUDENTS LIKE US TO READ YOUR BOOKS AND SCORE GOOD MARKS IN THE EXAMINATION.HOWEVER THE BOOK DOES NOT CONTAIN DETAILED SOLUTIONS. AS A RESULT WE ARE UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND FULLY THE METHODOLOGY OF SOLVING IT. AND THE PRICING IN INDIA IS VERY HIGH TO AFFORD THIS BOOK. THIS MAY BE CONSIDERED BY THE AUTHOR TO MAKE THIS BOOK AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE FOR AN AVERAGE INDIAN STUDENT. THANKING YOU, YOURS FAITHFULLY, M. RAGHU RAMAN
Poorly written By A27FRW43VIYASK on 2006-02-15
This is a poorly written textbook; rambling and fragmented information is presented on a piecemeal basis rather than in a clear, concise and well-organized manner. Important information belonging to one subject-matter chapter, is often presented as "aside" information in other chapters on wholly different subjects. This textbook appears to have been written by an author who forgot to take his ADHD medication. This "substandard" quality has become common place with this particular publishing company, Prentice Hall, to include its many subsidiaries (Pearson, Thompson, Southwestern, etc.), to the detriment of the education system.
- Good starting book for Managerial Accounting
     By A1AI7SSCMR5K69 on 2007-02-26
Clearly written. Although it assumes some basic knowledge about accounting, the writing technique is such that there is very little background knowledge that you have to go refresh yourself with in order to make sense of the new information. For a novice at accounting like me, this was easy to understand, with good examples and illustrations.

I am Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA) - intermediate student. I used this book for my professional qualification paper - Decision Making. This book is useful, but I have some reservations and therefore the rating 3/5. Some of my reservations are:
1.Unlike Drury's, Management and Cost Accounting, this book is almost all formula based. Almost everything is derived through formula and there is very little explanations on why the formula is structured in that way.
2. The chapter of Standard Costing and Analysis of Variance is frustrating. The author(s) doesn't cover all the variances under all the categories, namely material, labor, overhead and sales etc..,
3. At one point the book asks you to calculate the Break Even point under "Absorption Costing", but there is never a discussion of how to do it. You'll find this information in drury's text.
4. The excersise and problem sets are too simple for a professional level student. However the cases are great.
The plus points however are:
1. Great coverage of emerging practices in the profession
2. The companion CD is great source of sharpening your knowledge, and
3. The color presentation
Overall, the book rates below Colin Drury's bible book "Management and Cost Accounting". Therefore before spending $150 to buy this book, have a look at the bible book.

I am a MBA candidate in US and will return to Japan next year.
My background is engineer in Japanese manufacturing company.
Even now, this textbook teaches us powerful tools and especially in factory accounting. The knowledge for budgeting and how to evaluate it will help me in the future.
I will bring this book back to Japan and try to use it in the real world!!
- Love-Hate Relationship
     By on 1999-09-30
Strenghts: Quite readable considering the subject. Terms are laid out in bold face and concepts are explained in identifiable sections. The summary at the end reinforces concepts and key terms. The end of chapter questions give you something to think about. Most examples are easy to follow. Weaknesses: Some concepts that include examples are explained with formulas in parentheses so that you have to stop reading and look at the figure. Not bad but I like them in the figure or in footnotes. Some of the exercises/problems were difficult to relate to the examples in the book. Other than that this book is great. What would make this book a 5? The study guide.
- Cost Accounting-A Managerial Emphasis by Horngren et al.
     By A24505CR98NLLV on 2003-07-20
In graduate school, I utilized this text. In addition, the work was helpful in preparing for and passing the Uniform CPA Exam. There is good coverage of cost-volume analysis, equivalent units, margin analysis and other important topics for qualifying examinations i.e. CPA Exam. The tables and graphical presentations are helpful as are the problem sets. This work is for the serious student in accounting. The course requires some serious study, particularly in the area of process costing.
- Good definitions, bad examples.
     By on 1999-09-24
I find this book very difficult to understand. Too often, there are formulas written right into sentences, and not in any special order. I would much prefer that the definition for a particular term is given in a sentence, then have the formula off to the right, or in the middle of the page, separated from the definition. This book gives very good definitions of terms, but very poor examples of the exercises that are given in the back of the chapters for review. In the chapter, there is maybe one type of problem, yet in the back of the chapter, 10 different problems too different from the given example.
- Errors and Unclear
     By on 1999-10-05
Throughout the text there are errors, and many things are very unclear. There are unnecessary use of big words which made it difficult to understand to some.
- when i was a student, i wished it has never been written.

This book is really a treasure for accountants and financial controllers.Read it now, it's very useful, and to all students, read it carefully because it will help you in your life.
- Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis
     By on 2000-03-23
We use this text in 2nd year accounting in Australia. I find it very difficult to understand. The explanations are too technical with unnecessarily long words. The examples don't correspond to the questions. Also there are several obvious spelling errors.

- Can someone help me?
     By on 1999-03-25
I am looking to buy this book for someone else. It seems there's a text book and there's a solutions manual by the same name, and i am looking for the latter. Can someone help me and tell me if this is the one i am looking for? Thanks in advance
- An excellent book for undergraduate & professional exams
     By A1UHJQB9DR8TU9 on 1999-12-08
This book is an excellent text book for students sitting both undergraduate and professional examinations. Here in Australia, the book is recommended for the Professional Year program of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, which I will be commencing next year in March 2000. Can anyone assist me by suggesting where I can order BOTH the Textbook AND Solutions Guide (FOR ALL QUESTIONS). Yours suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!

- the best costing book
     By A3RP8C2OZ1NVGV on 2002-12-07
I've studied cost accounting for 2 years in Hong Kong. The first year I used a really bad text book named 'Costing', I hated studying Costing. However after using the 'Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis (10 Edition)', I become interested in Costing and Management Accounting. And deceide to have CMA exam in future. THIS BOOK IS REALLY GOOD ONE.
- Excellent book
     By A6KOTWP7N7RLU on 2006-10-10
The writing may not be perfect, but it's still a great textbook, probably the best you can find.
After all, there is a reason that so many colleges use this book. You will learn a great deal whether you use this book for a class or for your own study.
- must for professional accounting students around the world
     By on 1999-06-03
As a chartered Accounting teacher of 12 years standing in India I must say that this is one of the most amazing works on the subject.Only a teacher of such profound knowledge as Prof Horn Gren could have written such a book.I strongly recommend CA students in India and around the world to use this book if they want to get their 'fundas' right.
- very thorough
     By on 1999-02-04
I am a student, and was wondering if there is a solutions manual that accompanies this book that has all the answers and not just the even numbered ones. if so email me back and I'll probably order it.
- Highly recommended.

- Cost Accounting Made Simple
     By A2UMQKBLHEP9PT on 2005-04-26
The write ups are easy to follow and well written. The concepts of what I read is applicaple to real life environment. Chapters do not drag on - very concise. Good use of T accounting examples, etc. - I purchased the hardcover because it is something that I will keep in my library and refer back to after college is over.
- Dishonesty
     By A117E5TODD6AJ2 on 2005-10-05
This product was purposely advertised under edition 11 while it is in actuality a 7th edition. Not only that, it is not even cost accounting but Financial accounting. To make matters worst the seller was not helpful at all and blamed everything on Amazon. I am doing my second masters and therefore not new to Amazon; so blaming such an institution is no justification for an inherent dishonesty. There was no CD package as well and therefore the only thing that matched to the discreption was the authors. Proof of this persons dishonesty is that on Amazon you can buy the same book he sold me at $2 while he sold (cheated) the book to me for $20 something. I strongly advise no one to buy from this person. If there was any lower rating than 1 I would definetly have given him that as rating "1" is too high of a scale for this persona.
- Not impressed
     By AZXWPBQC27BYY on 2007-10-02
I am not sure whether my negative perception of this book arises more from my disliking the book or the subject matter, but I felt like I had trouble learning from it as well as I have from other textbooks. I generally rely on the text to clarify anything I missed from a professor's lecture, but this one was not that helpful for me. I'm sure this is related to the fact that I am absolutely horrible at accounting, but I was hoping that the textbook could save me and teach me whatever I was missing in class... no such luck!
- Dense, verbose, boring
     By A17XP0AOO0QFQ1 on 2007-11-03
The writers of this book present a lot of material; however, they do so in a manner that may cause confusion and a general dislike of the material. Presentation is verbose, often using paragraphs to explain concepts that could be stated in one sentence. While some sidebars present necessary information, many of them are simply advertisements for the publisher's study guide.
- Didn't enjoy this book
     By A3TMOKWGIBO4RQ on 2008-02-28
I normally don't post reviews but I just finished up using this book for a class and highly dislike it. I think the reasoning with how they illustrate problems is confusing and terms are mixed up with bold or plain print. My professor even said he did not like this textbook and wished there was a better choice out there. I thought the homework was good but there were some points that it didn't make sense at all. My biggest pet peave had to deal with the Economic Ordering Quantity stuff in chapter 20. I read the chapter twice and still didn't understand the function of EOQ. I eventually found a powerpoint online which explained it. I think this book has potential and obviously the amount of time invested with the supplementary material is amazing. Regardless, I think there still needs to be more work done on this book. Good luck using this book in your class wherever you're forced to use it.
- Poor Learing Tool for an Online Course
     By A2OT2V9AJU5JZO on 2008-03-11
I took this course on line and this is not the textbook to use. I just want to add that I ended up earning an A, I don't want anyone to think that I am blaming the book for a poor grade. A few of the chapters were very poorly written and the subject matter hard to follow. Some of the problems were so mixed up and time consuming that the time I spent digging out the pertinent information needed to solve the problem, could have been used to learn the material and acquire a better understanding of it as well.
Also the 11th Edition and the 12th edition is the same book, and thus many of the problems were the same except for the referenced dates. It is really a shame that colleges do not do their homework and give the student a break financially ($ 100.00 dollar difference or more.)There is no reason for them to demand the students to purchase a newer version when the older version would have sufficed.
I would strongly recommend to purchase the accompanying STUDENT GUIDE. This was not a requirement, but well worth the money. I will add that it did help me earn that A.
