  • One of the best textbooks I've read.

    By A2G7TNJ6U85ZEX on 2003-04-24
Excellent, excellent book! Don't listen to reviews that say this book doesn't help if you are taking a sociology class. The author is a very good writer- he doesn't talk in circles, he's specific in examples and the topics are very well-organized. The author doesn't hesitate to mention proven facts, and at the same time, he's able to maintain a genuine tone of concern, no haughtiness. One thing, though- John Macionis churns out a new edition almost every year, it seems. There is already a 7th edition out. You could probably get away with buying an older edition and still do well in your sociology class. Check with your instructor to make sure. My Soc class actually requires this 6th edition, but I am using the 5th edition, in Spring 2003, and I have an "A" in the class. There is an additional chapter in the 6th that the 5th does not have- on sexuality, I think (I apologize if there are children reading this review), but my class was not assigned to read that chapter, so I was fine. I am not sure what additions the 7th might have. Hope this helps.

  • Complete Garbage

    By A1IJUQONPB2W0W on 2005-09-11
This book is ridiculous. Its extremly biased and racist. Total garbage. Its being tossed in the bonfire after this class is over. I have taken two sociology classes, one used "A down to earth approach" I hardly had as bad a taste in my mouth after reading that one than I do with this propaganda.

  • A Look at Paradigms

    By A2K6UMRZ6K1BRU on 2000-01-04
This text is an excellent way for an introduction into the 3 primary sociological paradigms (Structural Functionalism, Social Conflict, and Symbolic Interationist.) It analyzes many aspects of society using the paradigms, and would be a perfect read for anyone whose interest in Sociology is budding.

  • Thorough Disappointment

    By AH1GXDU4LA9T2 on 2007-12-12
I felt as if Macionis was trying to be uber-apologetic for what he believed are sins of the white race. I feel that he negatively stereotypes whites and Asian-Americans, bashes anthropological research, quotes himself too much, and contradicts his quotes and the quotes of sociology's greats. These faults will be obvious to anyone who processes the material rather than just memorizing for testing purposes.

Macionis emphasizes Weber's fundamental belief that when a sociologist adds their own values to their work they have moved into the political realm. He is guilty of this throughout the text. His latent function of education section is very entertaining (sarcasm). The only positive thing I can say about the book is that I was introduced to the real sociologists: Berger, Weber, Merton, Durkheim, Parsons, Liazos, etc.

  • take good notes in class
    By A2OCEWSNGZNSUH on 2007-02-03
you know, if you just take good notes in class you don't need to buy the "required" books for class. and this is multiplied if you continuously start each semester reading and end up not reading anymore. this book is a perfect opportunity to not read.

  • A tad bit of bias on the author
    By A3H4L7TJKQHW4Q on 2007-09-15
Before I bought this book for Sociology class I had read a review from here where the poster thought the author was discriminatory. I can see that in hints of the book. It is not a bad book, but it's not a book you just gotta have either. Some of the things he discusses is common sense and if you take notes in the class you probably won't have need for it. But back to those "hints", the author will make comments in the book about upper class people being white and so forth. Well we all know there are many upper class people of nonwhite class and the author could have kept that comment anyway.

  • This is the worst book I've ever read!
    By on 2000-12-23
Some of his explanations are not correct. Get another book. Don't waste your monety.

  • did I buy this?
    By AOKE2TB7YKUZ9 on 2002-04-25
I had to buy this one for a class in school, to bad we never really used the book...
Mostly got the standard hand-out, and went along with our day.

  • Are you kidding me?
    By A3UZKJ95MXHLNC on 2008-05-15
After reading the first chapter of this book, I couldn't help but think is this what kind of education I am paying for? The poster who wrote that this is racial propaganda was being modest. This is communist BS. If you are white, you are rich and powerful trying to keep everyone down, if you are black you are poor and have no options, if you are Mexican you are unwanted...etc. This is stereotyping at its finest and the author doesn't understand that stereotyping goes beyond the meathead comments like "everybody knows you have to be black to play basketball". The author also gives an explanation of how racially divided sports like basketball and football (professionally) and has the audacity to state that the vast profits sports generate are controlled by a small number of people (predominantly white men).

The cynicism has stripped any credibility for me. The author could have stated something positive about how well blacks are at these sports and the majority of blacks in football and basketball is due to them outperforming others in their area and I guess multi-million dollar a year contracts are chicken feed. I get tired of this racial division being forced down throats of young Americans during their education. This type of material is moving to divide America through people who buy into this stuff. It reinforces stereotypes, creates hatred and cynicism from everyone's perspective, and doesn't even remotely give the impression that America is a great nation and place to live. This material is pounded into people's minds so much throughout their education that they start believing it and forget about the opportunities out there for all Americans.

I will do what a previous poster said they would do--throw it in the bonfire when I am done!

  • Don't order from here!
    By A24DCSNGA1TO0Z on 2005-09-05
I received this book over a month after I ordered it. I ordered it early so I would have it in time to start class. Obviously that didn't happen. The book has been cut (missing pictures and text) and is in poor condition. I don't believe I would order from these people again!

  • Disappointed
    By A11PLMLYAO0X0W on 2008-11-29

  • A Wonderful Introduction
    By A3POOMIQEKNKOF on 2002-07-09
I found this book to be very interesting and learned quite a bit from it. I bought it last semester for a sociology course I took. Because my professor was also the dean of that department - it amplified the learning experience I got out of the book. Each chapter also starts out with a little snippet of a story that relates to the theme of the chapter. I very much enjoyed the course and the learning experience gained out of the book.

  • Great Service from Amazon
    By A22IOVIRJMK23P on 2006-02-26
Hello,I was apprehensive at first about ordering my book from Amazon but I liked the price and after reading the other reviews I decided to take a chance.I did not want to buy a used book because I did not want to chance getting an 'as is' product. I got confirmation that the book was shipped 2 days after I ordered it and lo and behold to my major surprise, I got the book the NEXT day!! I was very happy about this but even happier when I saw that the book was exactly what I had wanted. Thanks Amazon for the great service. Hey I believe we should give credit where credit is due. As for the actual contents of the book, I will get back to you on that since I just started using the book for my first sociology class. It seems ok so far but I will let you know. Thanks again.

This text book is pretty easy to read and understand with today's news incorporated in it. It's great to use in a college course.

  • Current and informative
    By A2INQ57JHA1I10 on 2007-10-01
I am using this book for my sociology class, and I must say, it has much to say. It reveals a great deal about the role society plays in every part of our lives. Many of the examples given to support the theories of the men and women who helped shape the field of sociology, are up-to-date.
It is refreshing to read a book for class that isn't as old as you are!
