Pirates Don't Change Diapersx$3.94
    (35 reviews)
Best Price: $3.94
When the pirate crew turns up at Jeremy Jacob's house and accidentally wakes his baby sister, that wee scallywag howls louder than a storm on the high seas. Sure, there's buried treasure to be found, but nobody's digging up anything until Bonney Anne quits her caterwauling. So, quicker than you can say "scurvy dog," Braid Beard and his swashbuckling pirates become . . . babysitters? Blimey! This hilarious companion to How I Became a Pirate reveals that minding the nursery can be even more terrifying than walking the plank--especially if you're a pirate.

SIMPLY A FUN READ. GREAT STORY TIME BOOK. By A1MC6BFHWY6WC3 on 2007-05-06
We already have a pretty good synopsis of the book here, so I certainly will not go into depth in that area. Simply put, Jeremy Jacob is visited by his old pirate friends while he is watching his baby sister while mom is away shopping for milk. Pirates indeed are not made for watching small, bratty baby sisters as we find as the story progresses. This tale is filled with good pirate talk (Aargh) and the art work by David Shannon is great. I love his facial expressions he is able to create in his characters. The story moves fast and the text matches the illustrations perfectly. This is one that the kids usually want read several times as each reading reveals something funny that was missed with the previous reading. I enjoyed this one, and more importantly, the classes I read it to, also enjoy it. When the kids like a book, that is probably the best indorsement it, the book can get. Recommend this one highly.
Great fun! By AG42CYU5P8NVQ on 2007-05-06
We don't have "How I became a pirate" yet. For some reason I thought this was it. Anyway, the book is fun and my 6 year old likes it for a bed time story. Everyday for a week so far.
I found the story is not really dependent on the first book. Basically, the pirates pay a visit to retrieve their buried treasure from Jeremy Jacob's yard after their ship runs aground. They need money to fix it.
But before they can dig it up; they have to help babysit Jeremy Jacob's little sister. But as Captain Braid Beard says "Babysit? Pirates don't sit on babies!"
The art work really makes the story fun and my little girl usually takes the book so she can look at the pictures.
Now we just have to pick up the first book!

This book is fantastic! It is full of imagination. Both my husband, and I love reading this book to our little one.
Silly adventure any kid would love By A21NVBFIEQWDSG on 2007-03-04
Jeremy Jacob was wondering what to buy his mother for her birthday. He had twenty-seven cents. Then he heard a knock on the door. When he looked through peephole he discovered his pirate friends. The pirate's ship ran aground on a coral reef, and they need the treasure buried in Jeremy's backyard to pay to have the ship fixed.
But Jeremy's baby sister woke up, which was not a surprise with all the pirate howling going on, and before the treasure can be dug up, the baby must be cared for. Braid Beard and his pirates become babysitters. They learn that caring for a baby can be hard work. But that hard work also helped Jeremy with his mother's birthday gift.
How I Became a Pirate is one of my favorite books for children. And Pirates Don't Change Diapers is just as much fun. The story is silly and filled with adventure, and the illustrations are colorful and exciting.
Armchair Interviews says: Pirates Don't Change Diapers is a winner for both boys and girls. It will become a favorite.
Want a good laugh?? By A12BPQP5UWYYHE on 2007-05-13

- No Sitting on Babies...and other pirate rules!
     By A3QYO76LD22QHT on 2007-06-09
This is a follow up book to How I Became a Pirate and is equally charming, fun, and well...very pirate-y. With easy to read text, lots of pirate talk, and detailed yet outrageously funny illustrations this book is a sure fire charmer! In Pirates Don't Change Diapers we rejoin Jeremy Jacob who is trying to figure out what to get his mother for her birthday with his 27 cents when there is a sudden knock at the door. With his mother gone out for milk and his father napping (along with his baby sister Bonney Anne) he's surprised, but delighted to see none other than Braid Beard and His Crew. They need to replace their figurehead, so naturally they need Jeremy's help in digging up their treasure (buried in the first book). Unfortunately all their pirate antics (mostly yelling out pirate-y things like TREASURE) wake Jeremy's baby sister. With young Bonney Anne awake and bawling her brains out, the pirates must help young Jeremy placate her before he can help them find their treasure. Naturally, pirates are not natural babysitters (NO SITTING ON BABIES, they declare), but sitters they become none-the-less. The read is worth it alone for the pictures of pirates trying to change diapers, the wee Bonney Anne's pirate kerchief improvised diaper, the strained spinach, and the cat...that poor cat (check out the diaper scene picture closely, there is a lot to enjoy there)! In the end, readers will be eager to discover is the pirates ever get Bonney Anne to sleep (ROCK ON) and find their treasure...and will Jeremy ever figure out what to get his mom for her birthday. Totally fun, totally charming...your young readers will love this story to pieces (of pirate gold)! Recommend for ages 4-8...I think it would work best as a read aloud, but also believe that it would make fine reading material for emerging readers. Either way, it's sure to be a hit! I give it five stars.
- Another great book from this author
     By A2QPDEYX1RV4YI on 2007-05-17
When we received the first book as a gift for my kids (3 and 5), we loved it so much we read it every day. My kids were repeating the pirate "quotess" and it was a great time..."A good one to Boot!"
Then, we discovered that she released a sequel...the Pirates come back. I had to get it. We read it the minute it arrived and the same thing happened. My kids LOVE this book also. Honestly, my wife and I love both books also. We have recommended them to so many friends and to the school.
This author not only has managed to take a current fad (pirates) and make a fun story out of it, but she has also made it clean, wholesome, funny, and with great graphics and high quality print. Worth every penny in my opinion.
- Another GREAT book from David Shannon
     By A5KHWJDNZREXP on 2007-05-30
My three year old nephew is a self declared pirate, so "How I Became a Pirate" was a must have. But I think I like this book even more. It's at its best read aloud with special emphasis (and perhaps special voice) for the pirate crew lines -- NO SITTIN' ON BABIES!! -- and guaranteed to make both children and adults giggle at the silly situations and pictures. I doubt I'll ever get tired of reading it.
- Pirates don't change diapers
     By A25W2KVM1HFVJH on 2007-03-31
This is a great sequal to the first book "How I became a Pirate." In this story, the pirates come to visit their friend Jeremy Jacobs. Before they can search his back yard for their burried teasure, they have a job to do. Great book, especially for anyone who has a baby in the family.
- Wake the baby - Walk the plank!
     By A25LK8R2SUBNOG on 2007-05-05
These pirate stories are a fun idea for toldlers. Older boys (and perhaps some older girls as well) ages 6 to 7 are sure to understand the plucky pirate references to the plank and the like. Younger children, however, may not truly understand the antics unless they've seen a few Disney pirate movies.
Pirate Don't Change Diapers is the sequel to How I Became a Pirate (Irma S and James H Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature (Awards)). I picked it up when I ordered The Bugville Critters Go to School (Buster Bee's Adventures Series #2, The Bugville Critters), which is the sequel to the just released The Bugville Critters Visit Dad and Mom at Work (Buster Bee's Adventures Series #1, The Bugville Critters).
In this story, Jeremy's mom goes out to buy milk, and he's left to watch his baby sister. After his mom leaves, Jeremy hears a knock on the door. The pirates have come back to visit their friend (and to dig up the buried treasure in Jeremy's backyard). They get so excited they start to yell. The yelling wakes up the baby. So before the pirates can search Jeremy's back yard for their burried teasure, they have a job to do.
The kids thought this book was fun, and this is one of those books that adults can appreciate too - a good thing as you'll be reading this one over and over again. A great book, especially for anyone who has a toddler in the family.

What an amazingly captivating and humouous tale for adults and children alike. We purchased this book for my 18-year-old son to read for his High School speech meet and the crowds roared with laughter. It's exciting to try and speak in pirate language, which is exactly what my son did when he read for Captain Braidbeard.
- Second in the Series
     By A3L83LPFJ1GSMK on 2007-03-08
My 4-year-old son was not as engaged with this book as he was with How I Became A Pirate. I think the whole concept of the baby and the dirty diaper really put him off. However, the story line is cute and the illustrations are really first rate. I think this would be a great book for those with a baby in the house!
- doesn't dissappoint

my kids thought this book was hysterical. they loved "How I Became a Pirate" and this sequel was eagerly awaited. This is one of those books that adults can appreciate too, which is good because you'll be reading this one over and over again. Great illustrations! I also am the "library lady" for kindergarten and first grade and the book was a big hit in the classroom.

I purchased this for my 3 1/2 year old boy. He really enjoys this book and loves the illustrations. We have pretty much everything that David Shannon had written or illustrated. We also have a 1 year old, so my son can relate to the baby sister.

They are there to dig up the buried treasure in his backyard. They get so excited they start t o yell. The yelling wakes up the baby and now the pirate have to help Jeremy take care of her. - Don't waste your time - nothing special here
     By A1C13YYFA2VCDU on 2007-06-19
Given the glowing praise for "Pirates Don't Change Diapers" I was expecting a superior book. This is not the case, and I have never been so disappointed. With the poor behavior and attitudes presented, this is a book that could do permanent damage. Avoid this book at all costs.
- Pirate fun

My five year old granddaughter found this story delightful. The word choice was fun for both her and me...and the illustrations are great.
This is a good companion story to the original one. Would highly recommend it for both girls and boys.

We have the first book, How I Became a Pirate, by the same author and loved it so when we saw this book we bought it. What a darling story with great art work. Our older child (four) loves it because he can relate to the storyline as our middle child (one) is in diapers. Very charming story about sibling interaction brought to you in a cute pirate adventure tale.
- Perfect book to read to your GrandChild!

We bought this for our Grandson, aged 4. What a joy to see his reaction to every word and picture! A wonderful read for a 4 year olds imagination!
- Great multi-age picture book with story
     By A2N0MPYMOSOLEZ on 2007-07-04
It's a rare combination that entertains my 2 year old daughter and 5 year old son at the same time.
This book has an active enough story that my 2 year old will listen to more than one sentence per page, and the story is engaging enough that my 5 year old likes it.
They both laugh at my pirate voice, and love some of the lines, like "No sittin' on babies." (this still cracks my daughter up every time)
We have "How I became a pirate" too, but my daughter heard this one first, and it remains her fav.
The pictures are GREAT too. Gives them lots to look at.
- Good-We loved it

- Great Story and Gorgeous Illustrations
     By A3MHEGH6EIS5ZU on 2007-10-02
A sequel to "How I Became a Pirate", this is a wonderful little story. The illustrations are excellent and provide such "scope for the imagination" that my 3 1/2 year old grandson and myself made up a lot of additional stories about the various characters using the pictures as inspiration. The map included is a great jumping off place to create your own map of where you would bury your treasure in your home, backyard, playground or school. In addition, as much as my grandson loves his "baby brother" (age 9 months), I think he sympathized with all the extra commotion having a younger sibling can cause. Definitely a charming story.
- Fun Book

This is a fun book to read aloud. I like doing the pirate voice. If your kids love pirates(and who doesn't) they will love this book. Also, check out "How I Became a Pirate" by the same author and illustrator.

These books are so cute and they are perfect for those who like pirates! My son is 2 1/2 and even though it's a longer book, he pays attention and loves reading it through to the end! He loves that the Pirates are babysitters and the funny parts included in this story! This is a great book!
