(20 reviews)

Best Price: $17.95 $10.64

  • The previous reviewer is wrong!!!

    By A1BRWR37NQOTJE on 2008-06-07
I bought the hard cover version of this great book and the publisher INTENTIONALLY created a classic look for this edition. It's obvious that the previous reviewer has never purchased a luxury edition of a book. The old-world style of the unique pages was created to give this work that classic feel.
Shame on you! You need to look at other luxury editions before commenting on something you know nothing about.
Everyone out there...enjoy this beautifully crafted work of art.

  • Don't worry, Ester. Some people don't know any better.

    By A1ENS54J81RGUW on 2008-06-07
You're absolutely right, Ester. The publisher wanted to create a different look for this novel. Don't pay attention to this goof. He/she needs to learn a thing or two about buying a book that's not a paperback.

  • Let's discuss the contents and not so much the binding ...

    By A3JAYNPJ7CXKJG on 2008-06-15
I read "La Sombra del Viento" (Shadow of the Wind) in one sitting, and thought it to be one of the best books I've read in the last 10 years. It took me just three days to finish this one, which is supposed to be a sequel, but you can perfectly read it independently of The Shadow. I don't want to be unfair with this one, cause I loved the other one so much. It is a good book, kept me going and interested, and found some parts very catching. I am not giving it 5 stars cause I was a bit dissapointed with the end, I felt the author had already written too many pages and some editor told him "that's it, you have to end it". Nevertheless, I strongly recommend it.

  • Muy disfrutable

    By A3IQ7OHGIE8OI7 on 2008-06-27

  • nightmarish barcelona

Very similar and very different from La Sombra del Viento. The romantic location is the same, but where the other book was a gothic mystery, fundamentally rational and with a coherent and satisfying solution, this is a totally irrational story, a fantasy book. Good in its own way, but a deception nonetheless.

  • Bad binding by the publisher
    By A2P0BW7BRAZS5Z on 2008-06-05
I am very satisfied with the contents of the book, in fact I recommend the book by 100%, but the editorial binder copy I bought it definitely is doing much harm to the author, because the book is very badly bound.
Some leaves are bigger than others and are left out or is not well-cut leaves, probably was bad luck, I do not know, but I think that the staff of Amazon had set in this detail and send me a copy in perfect condition.

  • About book binding
    By A1R6QMWA6WYBQC on 2008-06-10
Errr... book binding is something quite different from cover art! The binding on this book (binding being how the book is manufactured; how it is sewn and glued) really is terrible. I had to trawl through 15 copies in my bookshop to find a book with binding that was not torn.

  • great novel
    By A3LSUC6HBCP8H2 on 2008-06-23
Ruiz Safón is an extraordinary novelist, this new one is like La sombra del Viento in quality, I recomend this one to everybody who likes historic novel.

  • Very well done
    By A1XYR7YT09NPJI on 2008-07-22
This is quite possibly one of the best books I have EVER read. Very well written, and very moving with every scene that attempted to invoke it. His style is fantastic, and this book made Zafón one of my favorite authors of all time, adding so much flavor to our current literary scene. Don't get me wrong, I loved La Sombra del Viento also. This one was incredible to say the least. Someone else mentioned on here that this is a sequel. This is actually a PREQUEL to La Sombra del Viento, as according to the Epilogue, Daniel Sempere is born, and someone important to him dies a little later (I won't spoil it).

  • Skeptial at first - fascinated at last
    By AUXHEDG0XIDG1 on 2008-07-28
Without having red his first adult novel (and best seller) I sat with a bit of skepticism to read "El Juego Del Angle" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. To my surprise and delight I found a story of dark mystery, so well written, I had trouble putting down the 667 page volume I carried everywhere for a week. I found, that Spanish cordiality and humor I so much love of the culture in every page. . . . Kudos Zafon for a great piece of fiction.

  • estilo elegante, historia ridiculo
    By A41TT727KJY94 on 2008-07-28

  • excelente pieza literaria
    By A1N1ONZXJI8UWP on 2008-08-04

    By A36HVIAQGLLGL3 on 2008-08-08

  • A prequel to La Sombre del Viento
    By A22FD8OPTAMBWP on 2008-09-01
This is the parallel story of 'La sombra del viento' or The Shadow of the Wind. David Martin, a writer is given a task to write a book about a new religion. The 'boss' Andreas Corelli, offers a fortune for the task. Just like in the first book, the words that are written turn into a web that mixes reality with the imaginary. The Sempere character is also in the book and again there is a love triangle which includes the 'Cemetery of the forgotten books.' Mr. Zafon creates a great adventure of intrigue, romance, and tragedy through a labyrinth of treason and secrets, where the mystery of the written word, the passion and friendship create a wonderful masterpiece.
