WOW, even better than reading the "adult" version! By ACLSB702RPUMZ on 2002-03-18
Over the years, I have thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Herriot's wonderful stories. When I found this book for my 7 year old daughter, I wasn't sure if she'd be able to follow along. What makes this book stand out is the fabulous drawings--they are full paged drawings, with not too much writing on each page. Each drawing is very detailed, perfectly matched to the accompanying text. I can't get over the talented illustrators (this book has two different ones, although the drawings are similar in appearance). I've loved re-reading these familiar stories and sharing them. This is one of the best books we've read this year, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it for a permanent library collection.
My children were mesmerized by these warm stories. By A3MQYQOXL8VJCF on 1999-12-04
My children have loved this book for years (they are now five and seven). Because the stories use words from far-away places, and an earlier time, reading them together has been a painless way to introduce many new and wonderful words into their vocabularies. If you are a parent who likes to read to your children, buy this book! The beautiful illustrations and language will keep you interested as well as the kids.
James Herriott.. the most wonderful writer By A1B0YZ5E5XGITZ on 2002-02-09
I think I have not had a more pleasant reading experience than sitting down next to a burning fire place, listening to my favorite antique clock ticking.. the patter of rain on the window panes and reading James Herriott. It is a memory of that afternoon that all these years later I have never forgotten. James Herriott is the most pleasant, relaxing, refreshing writer. Forget all the worries and cares and escape for a few minutes into a quiet world where the animals speak their own language.. A wonderful book, a wonderful writer. Thank You James Herriott for the memories.
Delightful at any age! By on 2001-06-30
I am a huge fan of any of James Herriott's writing. I love to read. My daughter, however, has a reading disability and the whole reading process is tedious and frustrating for her. We usually read together. This was one book that she requested to read again and again and again. James Herriott's heartwarming stories translate well into the youthful reader's world. Even if you are not an animal lover, you will find yourself falling in love with the lovable creatures and their eclectic owners!
Settle in for a Great Read! By A124RZ0DOSPM5 on 2004-06-25
James Harriot's story telling style conveys the life of an English country vet in vivid language at a pace that makes you and your little ones settle in for sheer enjoyment. His word choices connect with the reader on multiple levels engaging the mind and emotions. The illustrations are both beautifully realistic and immaginative. My children love the stories and frequently ask to hear them again. As a read aloud, it is appropriate from 3 years-old and up. Neither you nor they will ever tire of reading these stories.
- outstanding book to read to small ones at bedtime
     By AU69ERKOK9ZSJ on 2006-01-15
With two small boys, I think I've read or have become acquainted with much of the literature available for parents who read to their children in the evening. This setting of James Herriot's stories, with their accompanying illustrations, is top notch, head and shoulders above anything else I've seen. The stories are heartwarming but realistic enough to avoid being saccharine--animals die or get injured--and the overall message is a good one: it's our responsibility to care for God's creation, especially the animals we have.
- Excellent bridge to the pleasures of independent reading
     By A1RFJPWZFW1TA2 on 2007-04-24
I constantly search for beautiful books to develop my children's minds, souls, and taste for literature and thinking. There is a struggle for every parent to find books during the period occurring AFTER the child has learned the mechanics of reading and BEFORE the child can read more than the chapter book pablum churned out by most educational houses and curriculum providers. It seems now the "hook" given to young children is magic and witchcraft lore spawned by the Harry Potter books - but that is another topic entirely.
I have a deep appreciation for beautiful, well-chosen words. Very few books are rightly called "literature," but this book is one of them. Each story is written beautifully and powerfully, obviously from the pen of a great master. The author brings out the details of appearance, background and psyche and the stories resonate with beauty and truth.
I like best that the power of the story comes from the beauty and wonder of the simple and ordinary. So much of our modern literature relies upon shock and caters to the overstimulated, easily-bored personality which needs ever-increasing levels of shock and stimulation to be amused. This book nourishes reflection and the meditation upon the things which are true, honest, just, pure and lovely,
Another delightful thing about this book is the rendering of the artwork. The book is heavily illustrated on each page, and the words are IN the paintings. The visual and verbal components are wedded together in a way that the words are friendly and integral to the story - an absolute necessity for the child to cross the bridge from mechanical reading to reading adventures. The illustrations are masterfully done and very much in keeping with the beauty and power of the language.
The book has sophisticated vocabulary presented in an unobtrusive way. The child learns these words without knowing he has done so.
My seven-year-old son has just finished reading this book, and the joy we both have in listening to him read and explain to me his thoughts and feelings about the stories is priceless (as is his pronunciation of some of the larger words).
- Make a Memory with your Children
     By A1K3P9WRC0WPW5 on 2000-11-11
This book is perfect for curling up with your children to read. One of the stories is Christmas-related and makes a lovely story to read the night before Christmas. The illustrations are beautiful and James Herriot is a master story-teller. You do not have to grow up in England or on a farm to appreciate his stories. If you love animals, you will love this book. My children look forward to cuddling up and reading another story with me and they are 8 and 11 year old boys! (But they love animal stories.)
- Wonderful stories and pictures to share

A terrific book for any child who loves animals. The stories are great, and the illustrations are a pleasure to look at.
- All time favorite book for any age
     By on 2003-07-15
This is our family's all time favorite book. James Herrriot's true stories paired with magnificent illustations make this a wonderful book to read to a variety of ages of children; adults find the stories equally enjoyable. We have frequently given this book as a "family gift"(a spread of ages and boys and girls), gift to siblings of a new baby and even to babies who have everything, but will later appreciate this lovely book.

This is without a doubt the best children's book ever written!
- Wonderful Collection!
     By A26RCNFNRIGQP0 on 2006-04-06
I have been reading this book aloud to my 8yo daughter and 6yo son. Even though my son initially showed no interest when I brought the book out (robots and dinosaurs are more his thing) he has been riveted, and my animal-loving daughter has been especially interested in each story, and each picture.
Every day they look forward to reading this book, and every day when our story is over, they beg me to read the next one. The vocabulary in the book is more complex than most modern books geared toward this age range, but I have been pleasantly surprised with their comprehension, and love giving them an opportunity to hear a more advanced vocabulary and sentence structure.
- You'll love these stories...
     By AM7YRJJISO4NQ on 2005-07-20
Our family has had so much fun reading these stories together! These stories are very interesting - your children won't be bored! We especially liked "Moses the cat" - very cute! The pictures are wonderful - full color photos on every page! Great book to have for years to come.
- Life lessons in empathy and compassion.
     By A1KKXLQ1P1CDHZ on 2007-04-23
This is an absolutely delightful collection of stories, generously illustrated and put together with a child's point of view in mind. It belongs on every child's reading list (I gave copies to all my nieces and nephews). As a bonus, the stories evoke emotions that help little ones develop compassion, almost as if Herriot were still here and the reader could go with him on his daily calls to the farms and homes where his "patients" lived. It's a wonderful book. But don't forget the DVD's: All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 1 Collection. And, this book is about as good as animal stories get: In the Shadow of a Rainbow: The True Story of a Friendship Between Man and Wolf

My whole family loved this book. My 5 year old especially enjoyed when I read it to her. We have read it several times and she still asks to hear the stories again.
- Sweet farm-based tales
     By ALFTE9FL02FGL on 2007-03-28
My six-year-old son loves the stories in this book, just as I loved James Herriot's series starting with All Things Bright and Beautiful. The vocabulary is a bit sophisticated, even for my well-spoken boy, but it's not too distracting.
- James Herriots' stories, for children
     By A1K0ELSCEUE0XX on 2006-11-10
I - we - love the James Herriot stories. This book has neat little stories lifted from his books and illustrated for children. The illustrations are very very good, and add beautiful imagery to the book. A good book for Dads to read the kids to sleep.
- A pleasure to read
     By A2XFEQ73HYIVXW on 2007-01-09
Growing up my family had a soft spot for animals. As we grew older my mom, brother and I passed around all the James Herriot books for grown ups and I vividly remember laughing and crying while reading them. I have two boys of my own who seem to have inherited the same love of animals. I was waiting for them to be a bit older before I began reading the James Herriots books that I saved through the years, since many of them are a little sad. Needless to say when I found this book, I was thrilled to find James Herriot's stories for children. There are only happy endings here. I love reading it to them and they seem eager to listen to each story. Most seem to start out with an animal in jeopardy and they eagerly anticipate what will happen to it and are always relieved to see a happy outcome. It does seem a little old fashioned compared to a lot of what's out there today, but that is definately part of the charm.
- Wonderful!
     By AXM39F16BT2SY on 2007-01-09
I purchased this book for my daughter as a Christmas gift even though she's a bit too young for it now (she's only two), I figured it would be a really special keepsake book for her as she grows older. And I had read an adult book from James Herriot and loved his stories. This book is beautiful! The illustrations are so beautiful; my daughter even now loves to just look at the pictures with me and name all the animals. And she'll actually sit through me reading some of the stories to her. When she gets bigger and can read, the words are written in big, bold typeface, so it's also easy to read. And the stories are so cute! James Herriot is a great writer! I think this is a must-have for all ages!
- A Perfect Read-aloud Book
     By A3P6SU7GWZFX5L on 2007-01-10
I wanted a happy Christmassy book of stories to read to a second grade class (7 and 8 year olds.) This was perfect. Herriot's stories are warm and loving, his language is excellent but never overly descriptive. The children LOVED the' Christmas Kittten'. best. The illustrations were so fine.( See a double page print of Mama Sow nursing eleven pink pigs and one black kitten.) I copied the words so I could hold both pages open and read from the rear, for the illustrations were perfect. I have never read a better collection of stories for young children. and I have been reading to this age group for six years.
- Even the little ones can enjoy Herriot!
     By AXHETL0M8XZPT on 2008-04-12
I am a long-time fan of James Herriot's books. I worked in an independent book store when I found this jewel, and I have given it at every baby shower and young child's birthday since. It is a collection of stories taken from his books and illustrated. The stories are sweet, poignant tales of the literary veterinarian's encounters with four-legged friends in England.
If you are an animal lover or Herriot fan, this is a must- see. The illustrations are realistic with a touch of warmth and they bring life to the stories that graced these literary masterpieces. Many friends and family who recently have had children love this gift. It is a book to be cherished and read to/with your children for years!
The binding is solid with a dustcover I remove when reading with small children (who love to rip my dustcovers!). The papers is a tolerant high gloss that can easily withstand sticky little baby fingers. My niece and I have clocked many hours reading and cleaning this book!
- This gift to our grandchildren will be special.

I've had the pleasure of reading all of the James Herriot books. The stories and wonderful illustrations in this book
will be a special gift to our grandchildren, toddlers and
teenagers alike.
- A Beautiful Book
     By A1FPHULLLDZJLK on 2007-01-12
My children and I simply love this book. The pictures are so beautiful and the stories are told in a manner where you can just imagine sitting around a cozy fire while Grandpa tells his stories from days gone by. Any child who loves animals will find this book a delight.
- A Gorgeous Book
     By A2N2FPOWKH968P on 2007-10-18
This is a great example of a living book. The stories transport the listener to another place, and the journey is a pleasure. My 5 and 8 year old daughters love these stories and their illustrations.
- A Classic for Your Family
     By A2YSTR9QW1U95G on 2008-12-09
My entire family LOVES this book! My kids, ages 7 and 5, ask for the stories over and over again. I love how warm the stories are, how colorful and vivid the illustrations are, how each story leaves a sweet affection for the animals and characters this vet has attended to. As a mom, I also love how this book has added words to my children's vocabulary, but without sacrificing the flow and ease of the stories. Each story takes 10-15 minutes to read, and my children are captivated by the story and the pictures for every second of that time. I recommend the book with no reservations to all families. This is not a "read one time and be done with it" book, but one you will keep coming back to. You will not regret this addition to your home library.
- This is my daughters favourite book!
     By on 1996-12-25
I bought this book for my daughter several years ago and she
still treasures it. She loves the animals. Last year we took
a holiday to England and stayed on a Dales farm in Herriot
country. We helped with lambing and milking the cows,
"By heck lad, it be a wonderful place". Highly recommended
for both children and adults.
- We LOVE this book!

Our 3.5 year old daughter loves this book. The illustrations are beautiful and the stories compelling. They are on a level that she can relate to without feeling condescended to. The stories are interesting and fun for adults to read and they are great to talk about afterwards.
- A quality read for your kids
     By A2K5D9F41YY9NZ on 2008-04-06
The stories in here are not just bedtime tales. This is life-enriching literature with quirky characters and poignant emotion which you will treasure for years to come. I got as much out of reading these to our son as he did, and you will all enjoy the illustrations. As with real living, the death of a beloved pet is included in one of the tales, so if your children would be upset by this, you might discuss beforehand.
