(67 reviews)

Best Price: $179.00 $115.99

This #1 selling non-majors microbiology book is praised for its straightforward presentation of complex topics, careful balance of concepts and applications, and proven art that teaches. In its Tenth Edition, Tortora/Funke/Case responds to the #1 challenge of the microbiology course: teaching a wide range of reader levels, while still addressing reader under-preparedness. The Tenth Edition meets readers at their respective skill levels.

First, the book signals core microbiology content to readers with the new and highly visual Foundation Figures that readers need to understand before moving forward in a chapter. Second, the book gives readers frequent opportunities for self-assessment with the new Check Your Understanding questions that correspond by number to the chapter Learning Objectives. Then, a new “visual learning” orientation includes: an increased number of the popular Diseases in Focus boxes, newly illustrated end-of-chapter Study Outlines that provide students with visual cues to remind them of chapter content, and new end-of-chapter Draw It questions. The all-new art program is contemporary without compromising Tortora/Funke/Case’s hallmark reputation for precision and clarity. Content revisions include substantially revised immunity chapters and an increased emphasis on antimicrobial resistance, bioterrorism, and biofilms. The new Get Ready for Microbiology  workbook and online practice and assessment materials help readers prepare for the course.

The Microbial World and You, Chemical Principles, Observing Microorganisms Through a Microscope, Functional Anatomy of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells, Microbial Metabolism, Microbial Growth, The Control of Microbial Growth, Microbial Genetics, Biotechnology and Recombinant DNA, Classification of Microorganisms, The Prokaryotes: Domains Bacteria and Archaea, The Eukaryotes: Fungi, Algae, Protozoa, and Helminths, Viruses, Viroids, and Prions, Principles of Disease and Epidemiology, Microbial Mechanisms of Pathogenicity, Innate Immunity: Nonspecific Defenses of the Host, Adaptive Immunity: Specific Defenses of the Host, Practical Applications of Immunology, Disorders Associated with the Immune System, Antimicrobial Drugs, Microbial Diseases of the Skin and Eyes, Microbial Diseases of the Nervous System, Microbial Diseases of the Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems, Microbial Diseases of the Respiratory System, Microbial Diseases of the Digestive System, Microbial Diseases of the Urinary and Reproductive Systems, Environmental Microbiology,  Applied and Industrial Microbiology . • not much help

    By A1BXPUGRMRMMFH on 2005-08-11
As another reviewer stated, subjects were scattered all over book. Constant referrals to other chapters and sections. If you choose to do the review questions in back of book, you won't find the answers unless you go on-line, very annoying as I don't like to study in front of a computer. Lastly in other science textbooks there are often mid-chapter review questions to help you learn - this had none of that. Book was useless, learned more from instructor's outlines.

  • Superb reference

    By on 2000-08-18
Microbiology: An Introduction is a superb textbook! All the introductory microbiology materials are explained in remarkable details and simplicity. You can go through an entire chapter really quick. The figures that accompany the text are beautiful and very informative. I am glad that my professor chose this text for the microbiology course that I will be taking this fall. My friend, who took the course last year has the previous edition (6th) and a large amount of materials was updated by the authors when I compared the two editions. The two CD-ROMs that accompany the textbook are excellent. The Student Tutorial CD-ROM even has sound clips of a large number of micro-organism names that appear throughout the book, allowing you to hear the correct pronunciation. The problem sets that appear at the end of every chapter are very well made. All in all, this textbook is a very good reference for introductory microbiology. The only bad thing that I can see from the book is that there is no answer key for the problem sets at the end of each chapter. I don't think there is a solutions manual either.

  • NOT a keeper

    By A33Z4H0UN9QAZ2 on 2004-04-30
We used this book in our Microbiology class (community college-pre nursing). Everyone, including me, disliked this book. We usually keep all our books for future use, but concensus was to get rid of this one. We have found the topics to be scattered all over the book and not organized well. DNA replication information was not clearly explained...In fact I found most of the topics to be better explained in "Biology" by Cambell-Reece-Mitchell. I usually read all my books. This class, I used the web for DNA replication and bacteria caused diseases, and biology book for the rest. One good thing came out of this. It forced me to use the web, and it is a great resource for Micro.

  • A lot of information....disorganized

    By A2J6894U5E3NLK on 2006-04-03
I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

  • GOOD INTRO, BUT CERTAINLY NOT THE BEST

    By A3NG3IWQSNNMHD on 2003-04-02
The beauty of this book lies in its choice of simple terms, when analyzing complex issues. A good introductory effort! Also, the tutorials of its accompanying CDs would enhance revisions.
Most readers will appreciate the way this book handled all those discussions partaining to microbial taxonomy, bacterial growth, and viral replication. Unlike many introductory microbiology texts, this one presented comprehensive information on the nature of prions.
But, even with the embellishments that included two CD-ROMs and web access, the retail price of this book is far from reasonable. This textbook delivered decent output on medical aspects of microbiology. However, it ran average info on industrial applications of microbiology; and performed poorly on environmental aspect. It remains a good book, but given its relatively high price and unbalanced coverage, I would not rate it as my first choice. There are many better texts in the market.

  • I miss it
    By A3P549H45MY8D7 on 2007-06-06
This was the required text for the microbiology class I took. I found this book to be very informative and helpful. The class was an introduction to microiology and this book was perfect for it! And I'm sure that, had this book been that bad, the instructor would never have selevte it for the course. My only regret is that I sold it back to the campus bookstore at the end of the semester; I wish I still had this to go back to and look up the information.

  • THE BEST BASIC MICROBIOLOGY BOOK EVER!!!!
    By A2G4QA381DEYH4 on 2004-01-27
THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT. I originally purchased it for a course in undergraduate Microbiology. It explains concepts and ideas clearly and has many illustrations to increase understanding of structures and the details of microbial organisms, such as viral envelopes and bacterial cell walls. Now that I am in Medical school, I still refer back to it as an introduction and refresher for more advanced medical courses. The concepts are so clearly presented that it is easy to go back and read over a few chapters of this book to enhance and reinforce the understanding of particular subjects. When you are short on time, it is much better to review chapters in this book than to scan and decipher numerous pages of medical text when many of the important main points are presented clearly in this text. Although, I recommend using it as an adjunct to your class lecture notes. If you are looking for a dry, banal book that will put you to sleep, this is not it. ANYONE WHO GAVE THIS BOOK A BAD REVIEW IS WRONG!!! THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT!!! BUY IT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!!!

  • It's an excellent book for undergraduate students!!!
    By on 1998-10-18
It was by chance that I learned from this book. A student of mine went to California on vacation and she bought it. Later she showed it to me. I found that "MICROBIOLOGY an Introduction" is a very good text book. I use, and recommend it to the students at the Faculty of Dentistry at the Santa María University, USM.

  • Good Book but Sheisty (sp?) Customer Support
    By A2PLGB52VCSYHG on 2007-02-02
This book seems to be pretty informative and well laid out. However, my book states that it comes with online access including access to the ebook. When I logged in however, I was denied access to the ebook. I wrote to customer service and they told me it was not included with my book (even though it says so right there on the cover). I have access to all the other online features, but just not the ebook (which is the one I want access to the most). We have gone back and forth but I haven't gotten anywhere.

So the bottom line is if you want the ebook, this is not a great choice.

  • Very Good book
    By on 2003-06-20
I always thought Mr. Tortora was a great writer. He knows how to convey highly advanced medical information in a easy to comprehend matter. This book is not any different. I highly recommend also the following which is on amazon:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This second book helped me with the type of questions to prepare for on my medical microbiology exams. The first book is needed to get the knowledge. The second book is needed to know what is going to be asked on the test.

  • It is an excellent book on Microbiology.
    By on 1998-11-21
I happened to see this book while in USA and found it most useful and essential to the students of Microbiology. The free PC compatible CD-ROM is an additional tool to learn the subject thoroughly.

  • Excellent office text
    By A8P6KQ7GHQ4ER on 2007-11-29
I purchased this text to help review for the FNP examination. It is an excellent resource--one that I frequently pull off the shelf to review. I would strongly recommend it for your medical library.

  • Best Microbio text for Microbio students
    By on 2000-07-17
Very easy to read and good amount of information. I recommend this book to anyone who is studying microbiology for the first time with some interest in the medical side of microbiology. The text is informative and structured very well - it also has a good use for pictures. If you like this book and are interested in infectious diseases or medical microbiology - I recommend Sherris Medical Microbiology or Med. Microbio by Murray. All in all this is the book to learn the basics to advanced concepts of microbiology on and will help you with any other courses you take that are on more advanced topics.

  • Dont buy 10th edition, Buy the 9th and save money!

  • The only textbook I've every REALLY used
    By A3GB2C5LIULPTT on 2009-07-24
I have to admit that this is the first textbook I have ever actually used. I always purchase my textbooks but never refer back to them. I used this book for everything, I LOVE this book. It is so simple and easy to read. All the pictures are helpful and it does a great job explaining the topics and concepts perfectly. I am pre-nursing and this book worked great for me. It does refer back to other chapters but all texts that I've had do that. I don't see why this is an issue for others who have reviewed this book. I will definitely be keep this one for future reference!

  • Microbiology
    By AMNUCFNGUTXKA on 2008-06-23
Wow this book provides so much information. I would recommend this book and class to anyone. I have read almost the entire book and I am completing the course with an A average. This offers some very informative information.

  • One of the best
    By A2V3XP9YKWSR93 on 2009-06-02
I took Micro in the summer and this book totally helped me out when things weren't clear. Some close subjects were kind of scattered, but all the information is in the book. It's a matter of knowing how to find it.

  • brand new conditioned book and very satisfied. thank you.
    By A1GK3VDJ6UVV1E on 2009-03-23
great seller. Item arrived as promised. Quick transaction and book was almost brand new. very satisfied with this seller.

  • Perfect!
    By A31X7MB41QXW8G on 2009-02-26
Timing was fast, price was perfect.. came in VERY good condition.. what more can I say? =) I'm very happy, although the class I might add is very hard.. hahah!

  • Good reference, pleasant reading too
    By A1VFBUTJ99WUKO on 2009-02-16
This is a good reference work.
ALSO, contrary to a couple of the negative reviews, I found that individual chapters are clear and enjoyable to read, EVEN out of order. Of course the chapters reference one another, because the the subject is inherently complex. That's not the fault of the authors, that's just the nature of the material! Excellent book. I highly recommend it.
(Yes, slightly overpriced I suppose, but then so are all such text books, whatever "overpriced" means.)

  • Standard text book material, but well written and easy to understand!
    By A1R1RY8CHTV624 on 2009-02-09
This book was required for my Microbiology class, but I actually don't mind the reading. The concepts have been broken down in a way that makes it easy for students to undertand!

  • The best micro book ever.
    By A11HEO18CLA5T4 on 2007-12-01
It's a great book, the delivery was excellent and it has a very good resale price. Get it.

  • Microbiology text, It helped me.
    By A1GDGWZ0CZO03K on 2006-06-21
I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me. Parasites, etc are particularly interesting. If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information. This book was very helpful.

I also used a study guide "Microbiology Study Guide Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This book has awesome questions for studying during the semester and really gets you ready for the exams.

  • Microbiology
    By A1CCHDGCVDZXXP on 2009-09-25
This book was exactly what I was looking for. I'm currently taking Microbiology in College, and they required this book for the class. Well I decided to go with Amazon because not only are they reliable it was $40 cheaper with Amazon then through the school.

  • EXCELLENT RESOURCE for NURSING
    By A1VX2S3ZOJOVKL on 2010-03-13
I'm a nursing student, and I can't stress enough how much I LOVE this book. Gives a pretty good overview of microbial activity, signs & symptoms of the particular infection, antimicrobial agents' mechanisms and side effects. Book seems tailored to nursing students. I constantly refer to this book when antimicrobial drugs come up in class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

  • As promised

  • Just what I needed
    By AAXSODP9PYXU3 on 2010-02-15
Though this is a textbook it reads just a little better. Exactly what I needed for class.

  • micro review

  • Few Things are as Beautiful
    By A1MICH3771066Y on 2010-02-01
I have to admit less experience than I would have liked, but from my experience you will want to learn from this book; through it is likely a product of the field.

  • Microbiology textbook
