and thus the nursing students speak. . . . By A1EN593WXR1WIZ on 2004-08-01
I just graduated from the second largest nursing school in Texas and we used this textbook for two semesters, (the school has a contract to use only Mosby textbooks). I, along with many of my fellow classmates, hated this textbook for a number of reasons. First, I found the content to be "wordy," confusing, and often times contradictory. The bottom line is that it's a poorly written text. There are grammatical errors throughout the text that made me absolutely cringe and there was not a week that didn't go by that we didn't have to approach our professors asking them "what are they trying to say here?" In fact, some of us were thinking of contacting Mosby publishing and asking them to have a non-medical English professor proof-read the text before publication. It's interesting to note that we found this same problem with other Mosby textbooks: Pediatric, maternity, foundations, etc. The only time we didn't have a problem with the text was when we did our psych rotation. The Mosby Psych text was not ready and so we had to go with another publisher: Saunders, which was far superior to Mosby. In fact, I asked my clinical professor why the school didn't use Saunders and that's when I learned that the school was contracted with Mosby. Damn Politics! I would go as far to say that the main reason I made it through Nursing school was because I went out and bought the Saunders (and Lippincott) textbooks. Anytime I didn't understand what Mosby was trying to say (which was often!) I would refer to Saunders or Lippincott and the light-bulb would always come on. Bottom line: avoid Mosby if you can.
A practical and well-rounded guidebook for Home Health Care By on 1999-02-26
This book I've subtitled "holding the bag" -- it is basically a text book for nurses, telling them how to deal with the patient after the doctor has left the room. It includes how to live with a diagnosis, a disease, and deal with the side-effects of a cure. It not only provides precise medical information, but includes psychological and 'daily-life' information as well. As it is designed for nurses, the vocabulary is technical, and the illustrations are graphic; if you really want to understand what the doctors just told you, this is the place to go.
Excellent Medical-Surgical Resource for Nurses By AE2JVMHQPDSHE on 2004-11-24
It took me almost two months to deeply appreciate this book. I must admit that I disliked the book initially, much like several of the other reviewers listed here. However, after one of my classmates in our Nursing Refresher Course raved about the book's nursing care plans, I took a deeper look at the material and was thrilled by the comprehensiveness and timeliness of the information presented. For example, the chapter on Alzheimer's disease and dementia contained information about diagnostic tests that is often only found in neurology textbooks intended for physicians. When I worked for a neurologist, the only resources I had for very specific diagnostic studies were the Mayo Clinic's diagnostic studies manual and the physician's neurology textbooks, some of which were several years old.
Overall, I believe this book serves as an excellent resource for pathophysiology, diagnostic studies, and nursing care plans. The tables and illustrations are beautiful, user friendly, and highly informative. Each chapter is organized according to the nursing process, which focuses on critical thinking and problem solving.
Don't delay in adding this textbook to your nursing library. This textbook is a great resource for nurses working in hospitals, doctors offices, clinics, wound care, patient education, and public health nursing. There is also an excellent section in the chapter on emergency care situations that covers agents of bioterrorism, which is very useful to nurses working in trauma centers and the military.
Very Readable; One of the Best in My Experience By A22S7D0LP8GRDH on 2006-02-27
I have now in my 3rd semester of using this nursing textbook. I understand the hatred for textbooks in general, but hatred for this textbook specifically is beyond me. In contrast to the many other reviews on Amazon, I have found the book extremely well written. I have likely read every word of over half of this textbook and have found it to be the most helpful of all of those textbooks we have used in the nursing program with the exception of Lehne's Pharmacology text which is exceptional.
I would go so far as to recommend this textbook as a useful tool for a practicing nurse (not a student) to purchase as an at-home reference to read prior to entering a new field of critical care or med-surg nursing or to touch up on areas which have been missed.
The general format of the book is within each body system or area of nursing, first a chapter or two of background information the physiology and pathophysiology of the systems are included. Then nursing functions within that area are presented. First health history and noninvasive physical assessments are discussed, followed by common diagnostic coverage. There are tons of tables and charts which make learning easy.
In summary, I found this book to be one of the most readable and useful of my double-major college experience. Highly recommmended.

This Book is Potentially Dangerous By A1JJKRD6VVIPRS on 2006-01-14
I am a nursing student and former editor with a Master's degree in English.
This may sound extreme, but I think this book is dangerous. The problem with this book goes beyond wordiness, poor organization and contradictory information. It involves a process.
The student dedicates an hour or two reading a chapter, puts the book down and says, Boy, I've worked hard; I must have learned something.
And, yes, the student has worked hard. Very hard. The student has waded thigh-high in verbiage for nearly two hours. So, he's right to think he's worked hard to understand the material.
But that doesn't mean the student has learned a commensurate amount. He hasn't.
In other words, this book is deceptive. You work hard, so you think that translates into knowledge, but what you're working hard to do is to understand what in the heck the authors are saying.
This book needs a no-nonsense editor. Someone who understands that more words doesn't mean greater clarity.
The school I attend uses this book. I suffered the first year; the second year, I never touched this book. I bought a different one.
If you're a student, don't waste your time, like I did. Your hours will be better spent with other texts.
- Outstanding!

An excellent text for Med/Surg nursing course. One you will want to keep for future reference. Indispensible!
- The Veneer of Actual Information
     By A1D7TRI8SJ95RT on 2006-01-12
This book is 80% verbage and 20% needed information. The ratio is similar to that you might get from listening to bloated bureacrat explain federal regulations for the purchase of government pencils.
The worst part about this book is that upon first reading, it actually seems to contain information. You don't realize how much verbage there is until it comes time to take a nursing test.
Don't listen to these other reviewers. Avoid this book at all costs. I've spent hours poring over a single chapter only to find a shorter more compact book that got the info across in ten minutes.
- Reader Friendly~
     By on 2003-03-01
This is the best med-surg book ever! I studied from several medical-surgical nursing books, but I used this one the most. This book is easy to understand, and straight-forward. Whenever I had to prepare a presentation on a new subject, I started with this book before reading any further. After I got some basic understanding of the subject, I moved onto books and articles filled with difficult-to-understand terms/concepts. Reading a med-surg book does not have to be a painful process no more!
- This book made me want to shoot myself in the head - (Nursing Student speaks out)
     By A1NJV1EI28TLQY on 2006-02-13
I am a nursing student at a university in the US and we are using this book for a single semester.
I don't know where and how to start.
This is THE WORST book I have ever read/used in my entire career as a student (8 years). It's beyond wordiness, numerous spelling mistakes, and incredible repetitiveness makes it a nightmare to read or even to use as a reference.
Everyone in my class hates it to death. My school most likely uses it because of lucrative contracts to Elsevier, despite vociferous pleas by the students to change it.
There were times when I seriously considered throwing this book outside my bedroom window.
The authors & publisher should be equally *ASHAMED* of themselves for printing this academic travesty.
**AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE**
- The Best Nursing Study Guide I've Used
     By A7LTG48WW5QLS on 2007-10-11
I have often been frustrated by "study guides," left with the feeling that I didn't really get value for my money . . . the same can not be said for this study guide. Answers are given at the back, but more important the answers come with rationals that help to truly "OWN" the concept. Buy it or wish you had later.
- Med-Surg Study Guide
     By APOAACFH77KOK on 2006-07-25
Reading the reviews posted on this page I'm beginning to wonder what everyone else is looking at. For those of you looking for information on the *Study Guide* I hope this helps.
The guide is broken up into chapters matching the content provided with that of the text book. The questions are a good way to see how much you actually retained from all of that reading! Best of all, at least one instructor each semester seemed to pull questions directly from its pages.
All answers are listed by chapter in the back and the pages rip out for easy comparison or photo-copying for study group.
For those of you who can't decide I would suggest buying it. I wish that I would have had it first semester - I probably would have gotten a better grade.
- Great Med Surg Text
     By A3HS5U2UUSQP0N on 2007-04-18
I like to get to the point. This book has lots of information that is put together well. One of the best things this book did was have care plans laid out in each chapter. These basically act as a snap shot of what to look for, and the nursing interventions you would perform as a nurse. That makes studying for your exams in nursing school a little easier. My wife's nursing school used Lippincott's Med Surg book, and I have to say that compared to that text this one gets to the point much quicker. I was a little disappointed that this book glances over some of the pathophysiology (I would have preferred that it was a little more in depth here), and that it spends way too much time going over Anatomy and Physiology. All nursing students have to take a Anatomy and Physiology course not every school provides a pathophysiology class. All in all I was pleased with it. However, this book does tend to ramble from time to time.
- the book is mostly practice questions
     By A1AC95MI0UDAY5 on 2005-10-17
this book is good if you want lots of practice questions. there's no explaination just answers. but, it is good practice.
- Med - Surg Study Guide
     By A3KJ6QU89CYUHQ on 2007-01-13
This guide helped me a great deal in school. Some of the review questions were very similar to the test questions and I felt the content in the study guide helped me to better understand some of the nursing components covered in class.
- Great item
     By A37K5GKH6F6AQ3 on 2008-06-09
Item received in excellent condition and as described. This is a great item to have to go with the book. It helps you prepare for tests and understand logic to the questions.
- It's ok
     By A2SA3RAR1OC7BM on 2008-07-03
Some of the questions in here are outrageous compared to what I read in the textbook. Stuff that was stated in only a sentence or two in the textbook would have really in depth questions in this study guide. I only use the multiple choice questions. The rest is kind of useless for me because we don't have anything other than multiple choice on our tests in class. A lot of times I don't even bother using this.
- Perfect and fast

Would definately place order here again.

- A necessity!
     By A13FCIZTA6SSXH on 2007-02-21
Best money I've spent for my nursing program. I wish I had known at the start of nursing school just how beneficial this book would be for studying. If you are using the textbook I highly recommend buying this study guide. It increases comprehension of the text material and made my exams infinitely less stressful. Worth every penny!
- Very Helpful

- Another Nursing Student
     By A2ELPP11OXPVAB on 2007-04-15
I really like Lewis' Med-Surg book. It gives information needed to provide effective, safe, ethical nursing care.
It's not all about what might be on the NCLEX, you know. This text is very good about stating what you need to know for patient care, and I really found that what I read in this book was what was told to me on my clinical rotation.
I would not sell this book back even if I could because I think is the best Nursing book I have.
- OK-but full of mistakes
     By A10G5UEG42OUA3 on 2007-04-18
The book is ok. Not the greatest. Our class found a lot of mistakes in this text and the publisher even sent one of us a new edition because of this. We actually recommended they ditch this books so next years students do not have to go through this txt
- Great book for every nursing student
     By A1W0I8CA0BDA1H on 2007-05-13
2 volume set is lighter to carry, so definitely opt for this one.
There are many high quality pictures illustrating various diseases that aid learning the material. Some of the pictures are scary though.
The book contains lots of medical terminology that, at times, hard to understand if the concept was not known previously.
- Medical-Surgical Nursing
     By A19MM3T9LBH3RE on 2007-11-24
This textbook is an easy read and has a lot of excellent information. I would highly recommend this book to nursing students and new graduates. It's filled with great pictures and tables to help learn the info or brush up if needed. It also has a lot of nursing care plans, which follow the nursing process. Excellent resource!
- So Far So Good
     By AXAI9EQU572TQ on 2008-05-09
I bought this book for my first semester of an ADN. I have discovered quite a few helpful nuggets of information that have been very helpful for my studies. I recommend this book be bought early on and used often, its been good to me so far!
- Kind of hard to understand
     By A2SA3RAR1OC7BM on 2008-07-03
I have a hard time understanding stuff when I read this textbook for class. It's not very straight forward or clear and you have no idea what's going on. It also seems like there's a lot of extra information that doesn't need to be there. The only thing I like is that it comes in 2 separate books so it's easier to carry around and flip through without breaking the spine of the book.
- This Study Guide Has Incorrect Answers!!!
     By A1OKKH5PR06JH7 on 2004-02-14
I have found many errors in this study guide. I thought I was crazy at first, then the rest of the nursing class had the same concern. The errors are in the answer section, it will give you the wrong letter for the multiple choice answer and the correct rationale. I have contacted the publisher and received no response. Nursing School is hard enough, don't add to it with a very frustrating study guide with the wrong answers.
- Nursing class
     By A1W13OT7JZNCZT on 2005-09-24
I needed this book for a nursing class that I am taking. It is the very book that I needed since they were sold out at the college bookstore. What else can I say? I received the book within the time limit as requested. Your service was above par.
- Great for building strong arms!
     By A1JCNSUIMUAEUC on 2006-07-19
Lifting this book was about the only thing this book was good for. For actually taking a test I scored MUCH higher when I used the Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN. Saunders told me what I needed to know for my test, and that is really all I have time for.
