Sheep in a Jeepx$2.86
    (75 reviews)
Best Price: $5.95 $2.86
What could be better than a misadventure from that rambunctious flock of sheep in board-book form? Two! Now sized perfectly for even the smallest hands, two of Nancy Shaw and Margot Apple's enchanting titles from their sheep series are board books. In Sheep in a Jeep, the hapless flock goes for a drive in the country. In Sheep in a Shop, the sheep are off to the store in search of the perfect birthday gift. With these muttonheads, a normal outing is sure to turn into a joyous lark. Rhyming text and disarming illustrations make these shear delights! "Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep on a hill that's steep." This story, much like the jeep, gathers momentum from page one. When five foolish sheep cram into one jeep, their high spirits and occasional lack of foresight (like forgetting to steer) combine to make a riotous, if ill-fated, road trip. Plummeting over a hill, tumbling into a mud puddle, yelping for help, these muttonheads just can't get their act together, much to the delight of young readers. Nancy Shaw's Seussian rhymes are guaranteed to tickle every reader's funny bone, while providing a great little learning tool, as well. Who wouldn't want to learn how to read, after hearing lines like this: "Jeep goes splash! Jeep goes thud! Jeep goes deep in gooey mud!" Well-loved illustrator Margot Apple humorously captures the dopey expressions and preposterous predicaments of Shaw's sheep. More wild and woolly misadventures can be found in any of Shaw and Apple's other sheepish titles, including Sheep on a Ship and Sheep Take a Hike. (Ages 2 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Beep! Beep! Sheep in a Jeep By A28GEIVP5KQMZU on 2002-08-19
If the mark of an excellent children's (or any) book, is familiarity and quotability, then these Sheep and their Jeep are indeed worthy. I have found myself, in my Jeep, after an icy patch, in a snowbank, sharing the sheeps' dilemma and chanting catchy rhymes from their wonderfully riotous roadtrip: "Oh Dear! The driver sheep forgets to steer!"The author and illustrator are in perfect harmony and this Board Book is joy for preschoolers and those who read to them.
Sheep in a Jeep By A3EYD7IREFS9D4 on 2000-02-04
My daughter is 16 years old and we are looking for a first vehicle. This morning we discussed a Jeep and she lite up exclaiming, "OH MOM! Remeber that wonderful book "Sheep in a Jeep?" That was my favorite book when I was a kid. Do we still have it somewhere? I hope you kept it forever. It is the best kids book every written." I then suggested that we didn't want her ending up in a heap like the sheep and we all had a good laugh while the 15 year old began to quote the book from memory. Today I find myself on the Internet seeing if it is still available. She is right, we have to have a copy since it is certainly an important part of our family history. I am sure all children will love it.
Sheep in a Jeep By A3TLO82A7EYRBK on 2000-08-20
This is one of the most delightful children's books I have ever read. My two and a half year old and almost six year old both love the rhyming, hilarious story about sheep cramming themselves into a jeep and the misadventures that follow. It's a perfect book for both little ones and kids learning how to read.
Fun fun fun! By A3ARV0MHB509C9 on 2000-07-12
My son loves the sheep books. The alliteration and rhyming combined with the hilarious pictures of five completely incompetent sheep trying to drive a jeep, who end up in a mud puddle to then be helped by pigs with tatoos, only to soon end up in a heap, is great fun. The premise is so bizarre that the kids I know who have read it, or been read to, sit on edge and can't wait to turn the page. The Sheep books are truly a treasure. My son has enjoyed them since he was 2 and one half. The book is relatively short and you and your child should be laughing by the end. Highly recommended.
A very witty story about some bumbling sheep. By on 1999-05-25
My 22 mo. old went crazy over this book when we first read it together. It is very well written, using words that aren't commonly found in toddler books. She can now finish many of the lines when we read it together and she really enjoys the illustrations. I liked these sheep so much I bought some of the companion books as well!
- A kid pleaser
     By A30H2335OM7RD6 on 2002-09-12
Catchy rythm, rhymes, cute pictures and funny situations all help to makes these books true kid pleasers. My three year old son has enjoyed all of the Sheep by Shaw books we have in our library. They are easy to read over and over because they have a catchy rythm that makes it easy to read and enjoy over and over. In fact, because they are so catchy and the rhymes are so easy to remember, I often hear my son 'reading' the book using the pictures as cues. Very nice. Enjoy.
- Every toddler should have this charming book
     By AJ1ZEMJSJYDOC on 2000-03-23
Adorable illustrations, very clever and original rhyming text, and a funny story make this book a giggle-filled winner for the toddler set.
- Fun for Kids and Adults
     By on 1999-07-09
I don't know where we've been, but just recently discovered the Sheep series by suggestion of our local librarian. Our 4 year old daughter really enjoys it when we read them aloud to her, and we enjoy it just as much. I think the illustrations really make the books. The animal expressions are priceless!
- Sheep are funny
     By A1PXH6NS60C8V5 on 2004-03-13
My son and I picked this up at the library and ended up enjoying it enough to get a copy for ourselves along with copies of Sheep in a Shop and Sheep on a Ship. They're short, fun rhyming books with lovely illustrations.
- A humurous metaphor: The USA and the Clinton Presidency
     By on 1999-05-27
Poetic, Written long b4 Clinton was president. It is an excellent summary, on an emotional level, of what any group of well meaning autocrats can do. My daughter brought it to me. I wanted to send it to all my friends as a humurous commentary on recent politics. The book stands on its own as a warning and and an observation of group behavior. Peers CAN be very wrong. ARE WE ALL ASLEEP? Are WE sheep? A book to KEEP! hehehehh
- My New Favorite
     By A12KUJT75HFO67 on 2000-11-03
Straight to the point: I Love this Book. My eighteen month old son loves books that ryhme and loves animals so Sheep in a Jeep is close to heaven. The vocabulary is very simple but gains momentum right along with the rolling jeep. And the illustrations are perfect. I love the little frog that kind of follows the jeep. But I must warn you, if you buy this book your child will have you reading it over and over and over.
- Lots and lots of fun
     By A2YF9CRYLMUS6L on 2003-04-09
Talk about clever! This is a wonderful book---one which will amuse your toddler and one which you will be able to read (and re-read and re-read) without growing bored. These sheep are wonderful---their adventures (told in Shaw's great rhyming style) are tremendous fun and Apple's illustrations really bring those trouble-ridden sheep to life. I have bought this book for lots of newborns as a baby present and I can't recommend this highly enough. Most of my friends (the babies' parents) have told me that they have enjoyed reading the book over and over again---long before their child was old enough to appreciate it.
- Watch out riding with sheep in a jeep!
     By A30YW5IGP6SNZK on 2001-03-08
Great book with thick cardboard pages. My daughter has several sheep books and never tires of them. The simple rhymes are not as simple as they appear. She has learned several new words like "weep", she learned about thinking a problem through and finding a solution, and helping others in need. She laughs at the exploits of the group of sheep and is just as eager to read the story now as she was the very first time...nice gift for toddlers.
- wonderful, hilarious board book
     By on 2001-12-26
My ten-month-old likes the pictures and rhythms, but I have completely fallen for these adventurous, silly sheep! I laughed till I cried the first time I read this board book aloud; every development on every page gets better. The story is priceless, but Margot Apple's illustrations absolutely make the book. Watch for the helpful pig's tatoo, and the small green frog on every page. Twice five stars for "Sheep in a Jeep"!
- Every Jeeper's child should have this book!
     By A27K4X6KTQFT9E on 2002-03-20
I bought this book for the children of my husband's jeeping buddies. It's hard to tell who likes the book more, the kids or the jeepers. They have really had a great time with it. And the kids insist on having it read to them every night!
- A Childhood Favourite
     By on 2002-07-29
A childhood favourite, Sheep in a Jeep records the misadventures of one very incompetent group of sheep as they try to depart for a drive in their bright red jeep. Delightful illustrations and rhyme tell the whole ordeal, presenting new whimsy on every page. And with simple vocabulary and just enough text to explain the pictures, parents and young readers alike will grin happily as they follow their crazy sheep friends along for the ride.
- Rolling on the floor laughing
     By A2SP49S1GR3BUT on 2003-04-08
My husband and I were talking about how in old cartoons like Bugs Bunny there was two levels of the jokes, one for the children and one for the parents who were watching the show with the child. "Sheep in a jeep" has this quality. The pictures, words, and story will definitely appeal to children, but whole story will make any adult laugh.
- Fun for parents, too
     By A313MXADYPOYWY on 2003-04-25
With a very young baby, you just want to convey that reading is fun. .... Fortunately, there's Sheep in a Jeep! This book is a kick. We have a big stack of books that we read to our daughter, but Sheep in a Jeep has a special place. The rhymes are entertaining, the story is amusing, and there's nothing condescending or cutesy about it. We've read it dozens of times and we still love it.
- Fun For Parents, Too!
     By A2CMHIZUH6ZMQT on 2003-06-10
This book is a scream! The great rhyming cadence is terrific for little ones; my one-year-old son just loves it and giggles whenever we read this to him. And the story is just so silly that you just can't help laughing. It's nice that the author of a kids' book kept the parents in mind!
- One baaaaahd trip!
     By AYDV19813JB64 on 2005-12-06
This is an excellent book for reading aloud to small children. If you are looking for a good rhyming follow-up for such Dr. Seuss classics as "Hop on Pop" or "One Fish Two Fish...", but perhaps something a little more "plot-driven", Sheep in a Jeep could be just the ticket.
As the title suggests, some sheep somehow acquire a jeep and at once set off on a road trip. Mechanical dilemmas and some serious back sheep driving soon threaten to stall them, however. At one point only some extraordinary interspecies cooperation saves them from a muddy doom. This is not the end of their troubles, however. It is a powerful cautionary tale to any child who's ever contemplated hitching a ride with a sheep or any other unlicensed farm animal.
The basic story line is full of action and situations small children can readily relate to. I have been surprised at how early an age children have been able to sit still for this one. The wickedly funny illustrations make it fun for adults too.
The language falls somewhere between that of Hop on Pop and One Fish Two Fish (minus the Seussisms) but manages to convey some pretty intricate situations. It is certainly not wordy, the author manages to tell her story with great economy of style. It is ideal for limited vocabularies, for she makes every word count.
The simple rhyming, rhythmic text and brilliant artwork succeed in conveying a variety of moods and situations, from anticipation, impatience and disappointment, to joy, hilarity, and enough hubris to stock a Greek tragedy.
The illustrations are hilarious for the most part, (particularly the depiction of the sheep's antics, their facial expressions and body language, and the range of emotions they experience) and the artist works the situations for every ounce of their comic potential and then some. Her tremendous comic imagination is only matched by the technical skills she demonstrates on every page. It is really the illustrations that make the animals in this book "human", or at least characters in their own right. One can only wonder if the author had any input into the drawings, because they take her text to some pretty amazing places. It is certainly a spectacularly successful collaboration.
And for those who add a little dramatic flair to their bedtime stories, Sheep in a Jeep offers many opportunities for sound effects (bleating and beeping sheep, a struggling motor, squealing brakes and squealing pigs, jeep crashes, splashing, spinning tires) and dialogue with the audience over traffic safety, animal drivers, and the importance of keeping one's eyes on the road at all times.
The board book format makes it ideal for children small enough to tear the pages of books they like, and any child that can sit through a Dr. Seuss book could probably sit still long enough for Sheep in a Jeep. The little boy I used to read it to has gone on to weightier tomes, but I still remember his enthusiastic, even frenzied, calls for an encore "Again, again". For a book totally focussed on sheep, that's not baahd at all.
Strongly recommended for children in the 2- to 5-year age range.

That said, I was looking for a book for an almost five-year-old. So, I purchased this one. However, it's definitely more for the 2 to 3-year-old range simply because there's not a story really involved. I thought this book was a little more involved story-wise when I purchased it, however, each page has these darling illustrations but only just a couple word sentences. I was quite disappointed because I thought since the reviews were so great that this was a nice story, written in the style of Dr. Seuss. I presumed it was a story, story, and not just a little ditty. It didn't hold the attention of the youngster for whom I purchased it so it will be sent back. If you have very young toddlers, then I highly recommend this book! It is very cute and well done.
- Kids love it!
     By on 1996-06-19
As an SLD teacher K-5 I am constantly looking for "easy books" that don't insult the reader. My son in high school all the way down to the first grader I tutor love this book. A good choice for repeated reading programs
- Rhythmic and Fun!
     By A1Q9I5AI833L7Q on 2001-06-13
Lots of color and visual appeal. The words are rhythmic and simple. After a year of ownership, my 2-1/2 year old son still wants to read this book several times a week and my 6 month old daughter gets excited listening to the rhymes.
- Sweet sheep
     By A3N74RXBP7RAB on 2001-09-02
We all love to read this book in the house. Everyone except the baby, whom we bought this book for! But shes still too young to get the great rhyming and silliness of the book. The misadventures of scatter brained sheep in a jeep. The drawings are "light" and not eyecatching, but the "storyline" is fun and sweet. I would recommend this for a much older child than 1-2 years old.
- Sheep in a Jeep
     By A24IIEUEP81C4T on 2001-12-27
This book is great. My daughter loves this book as do we. We also have Sheep in A Shop. This book is quite special as my daughter loves to ride in daddys Jeep. Although its aimed at the 1-4 year olds, its great reading for the whole family at story time.
- best of the sheep books
     By AMZ6OTU47T1S2 on 2002-01-22
This is the best of the Shaw/Apple sheep series. I enjoy it (and if you're reading a book over and over, that helps!) and I haven't found a two year old yet who doesn't like it at least a little. (Some like it more than a little.)
- Uniquely hilarious
     By AVMYCMAOY4F4S on 2003-01-05
This book uses wonderful words and pictures to describe the escapades of 5 hapless sheep. My girls and I think that the sheep are hilarious. I think the rhyme is creative and has an interesting cadence that makes you think about the words. It does not lull you into numbness like Suess. The concepts are also a bit more complex than other early books. (i.e. selling the jeep "cheap") It is a good addition to the library of the 2+ crowd.
- great book -- boring audio
     By ADYSNLOWUE9W6 on 2007-01-14
This is a wonderful story. However, the audio is very slow, with long pauses between lines, and it didn't keep my son's attention at all.
- great book!

my baby is only two weeks old but i wanted to start his library early--i don't know if he will like it but it's my favorite so far!
- something to make you chuckle
     By on 1999-06-18
My sister told me to buy this book because it is soooo funny. I took my 3 year old to the book store and began to read it to him. I was in tears by the after the first few pages. It is a delightful and easy to read book for all ages.
