A must-read for any insomniac! By on 1998-10-11
I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from insomnia. Dr. Hauri gives you all the facts about what could be causing your sleeping problem. He covers the effects of diet on sleep, including certain vitamins and minerals that promote sleep; the effect of exercise on sleep - how the amount and timing of activity is important; and how you might be upsetting your natural sleep cycle (you may be sleeping too much!) and how to reset this clock. Also, did you know that you may be conditioned to not sleep when you go to bed? He covers the Bootzin technique of overcoming this bad habit of bedtime-induced stress and anxiety. He discusses medical problems that might be contributing to your insomnia and when to seek a medical professional. He explains why sleeping pills are not a good long term solution and how to kick this potentially dangerous habit. He gives you relaxation techniques to help you manage your stress all day long. For any of you who were contemplating whether or not to seek treatment at a sleep disorders center, Dr. Hauri explains when it is time for you to seek this kind of help. He also covers what goes on in a sleep lab and what they will be monitoring. Dr. Hauri gives you all the facts about sleep so YOU can be your own sleep investigator. Easy to read and understand. Highly recommended! Thank you,Dr. Hauri, for helping me to feel so much more rested and refreshed.
Thanks for Helping Me Sleep Better By on 1999-06-30
As the author of Desperately Seeking Snoozin', I am indebted to Dr. Hauri for his quote that I use on my front cover. Even more importantly, I will be eternally greatful to Dr. Hauri and the other great sleep researchers and clinicians that have developed the techniques that do offer hope for those with insomnia and other sleep problems. I incorporated techniques that he recommends to overcome my severe chronic insomnia problem. Additionally, I recently had the honor of meeting Dr. Hauri at an international sleep convention. In addition to his understanding of insomnia, he is a very nice man. His book should be required reading for anyone with sleep problems. He is the master.
Very good book, 9 out of 10 score By A26TSW6AI59ZCV on 2005-01-10
"No More Sleepless Nights" is a well-written, comprehensive, easily-read book about all the possible causes for the different kinds of insomnia, with very specific ideas about how to resolve or decrease the insomnia, depending upon the variety and the cause.
The possible causes discussed include: illness, medication, habits, diet, anxiety, depression, and environment. The author has really tried to catch every angle. The book tries to avoid sleeping pills, and medication in general, whenever possible and, in the few situations where the book advises you to consult a physician about medication, the goal is "as little as possible, as brief as possible."
My one, fairly minor, gripe about the book is that, early on, the author talks as if the book was going to present a detailed, step-by-step program for addressing insomnia (i.e., insomnia --> A --> B --> C --> D --> E --> no insomnia). Instead, it is more of a shotgun approach, necessitated by the different variants of insomnia and the many possible causes. At the end, the author again portrays the program has a single, sequential entity. I am not disputing the program, as I think the book does an excellent job of explaining insomnia and methods to address it. I am just nit-picking about the author portraying it as one thing (just in the first few pages and last few pages), when it is really a more varied and complex program, as it needs to be.

The workbook contains most of the information from the textbook, but is redesigned to emphasize how to analyze the causes of insomnia and what to do about it. I liked this format even better than the textbook.
This book changed my life By on 1998-11-23
I happened into this book in a bookstore several years ago. At the time, I was experiencing sleep difficulties that were interfering with my life and work. This book works methodically through possible causes of sleep disturbance, and provides exercises that the reader can follow to determine the causes of their own sleep problems and how to solve them. Using the book's methodologies, I was able to determine within a couple of weeks the surprising cause that I was trying to get more sleep than my body needed. Therefore I was never sleeping particularly well and always feeling tired. I began to cut down on my sleep time, and almost immediately began to feel better! The point, however, is that this book provides tools for anyone to determine the causes of their sleep difficulties and begin to resolve them. I highly recommend it.
Very comprehensive, unbiased book on insomnia By on 2003-10-20
The depth and breadth of this book is impressive. Dr. Hauri is not pushing a particular cause of or cure for insomnia... he covers a wide range of possible causes and cures. With this breadth of information, the reader can explore his/her own causes and possible solutions. If you are a long-time insomniac, you may find info here that you haven't seen elsewhere. I've had insomnia since childhood, have been to a well-known university sleep center, and found info in this book that has not been provided to me by any physician. Very, very helpful book. I've been sleeping well for 9 months nearly every night. Before I would have one good night of sleep every 6 months or so.
- Good sleeping plan

This is the best book I have read yet! And it works.
I have been suffering from insomnia for 9 years and done all I cound think of to cure this problem, light therapy, lavendar, room darkening, no tv, sleep clinic all the usual. 2 years ago I began sleeping pills to function during the day.
This book has been a great source for beginning to cure the problem in very practical and solid steps. I would also recommend getting the sleep timer, it gives you an objective measure of the sleep you are actually getting. I am now averaging 5 to 7 hours of sleep a night with no sleeping pills.
- Some surprising [but effective] ideas for better sleep.
     By A1XQ0N87FMY3RG on 2005-03-27
This is an excellent book that covers a broad range of reasons, and subsequent treatments, for insomnia. If read straight through, I imagine this book would be a bit cumbersome since it is so thorough. I found the technical information about sleep (in the introduction, but also scattered throughout various chapters where it applies) to be fascinating. But it is easy to skip to the parts that only concern you.
There are some detailed assessment quizzes, which I skipped because I had a definite idea of what was causing my insomnia (shift work, poor sleep habits, and anxiety.) But if you think there might be emotional, medical or other factors to your insomnia, the quizzes should point you in the right direction.
The advice on treatment is very interesting, not only because it seems to work, but because a lot of the ideas seem so counterintuitive (for example, if you have insomnia, spending LESS time in bed is probably a good idea. This is exactly opposite of what I was doing.) Chances are if you have insomnia, the things you are doing to help yourself sleep are probably only making it worse.
Some of the treatment ideas (particularly for improving 'sleep hygiene') might be difficult to implement at first, requiring some commitment and self-discipline, but the idea is to create a routine and good habits in the long run, so you'll be consistently getting good sleep for the rest of your life. Totally worth waking up at an hour you'd normally sleep through, or forcing yourself outside into the sunshine when you'd rather be napping.
After reading the book, for the past two nights I have actually fallen asleep within 30 minutes and slept soundly through the night. I am actually looking forward to implementing more of the treatment ideas, and I hope to kick this thing completely.

The book 'No More Sleepless Nights' is an excellent overall book on sleep disorders. It covers very effective diagnosis of sleep disorders, such as those arising from poor hygiene, poor diet, depression and anxiety. One of the most useful suggestions is the empirical and very sensible use of sleep logs to moniter your sleeping patterns, in aid of diagnosing possible factors leading to poor sleep. Once you have an idea of what may be causing your sleeping problems, the book gives detailed information on how to possibly remedy the situation. This includes topics such as relaxation techniques, excersise, regular sleeping times, as well as more drastic techniques such as light therapy and chronotherapy. The details of staying in sleep disorders units are also covered. Overall the book is very good, concise and well written, coming from two leading expert MD in the sleep disorders field. The main message you are left with from this book is - don't be scared of insomnia. Highly recommended.

     By AD6BUAPAGHHF1 on 2004-01-25
Peter Hauri has written a book full of good information and practical steps you can take to end insomnia. Here are all the basics to improve your sleep. These include keeping a sleep log, sleep hygiene, relaxation and stress management. Diet and exercise are also addressed. There is some help for diagnosing the sleep problem so that proper treatment is obtained. He addresses narcolepsy, sleep apnea, sleep terrors and other sleep disorders. Sleep problems increase around midlife and can be a function of emotional and stress issues, as the author of Women's Midlife Workbook, I have worked with many women who can use help for sleep at midlife and would find this book useful.
- Informative and comprehensive
     By AHFQH8S1KHVL on 2004-11-07
Dr. Hauri has provided us with a very comprehensive book on conquering insomnia. It is a must-read for insomniacs! The treatments for other sleep disorders are the same ones offered in other books that don't have good success rates but that is not what the main focus was of his book. He provides the reader with great information on all other types of sleep disorders that we don't find in too many other books. He ends it with Sleep Disorder Clinics. Great book.
- The Mayo Clinic program for treating Sleep Problems
     By on 1999-05-26
The newest edition of the book is now available in paperback. The first edition was exceedingly helpful -- the new edition has even more material, including some newly developed techniques. By the way, the book has two authors: Dr. Peter Hauri, of Mayo Clinic, the world's leading expert on insomnia, and Shirley Linde, the well-known science writer and author of some 37 books, including No More Snoring.

I strongly recommend this audio CD to everybody who suffers from mild or intense insomnia.
I started waking up in the middle of my night sleep or towards the mornings and having difficulty getting up in the mornings quite frequently recently so I listened to this audio CD by Peter Hauri. Because I have just finished listening to it I have not yet applied the recommendations to benefit from them. There is a lot of clearly explained information about the various causes of insomnia and what to do about them, when to seek what kind of professional help etc. . The explanations are made by a highly qualified expert on the topic : Peter Hauri the Director of Mayo Clinic's insomnia program. It is more than mere information about insomnia : in addition the CD provides abundant knowledge about general health and the way it impacts the quality of sleep. Applying the advice is certain to improve not only the quality of sleep but also physical and mental health in general.
The quality of voice on the CD is high, explanations easily understandable and pleasant to listen to. The listener can listen to this CD again and again to refresh his / her knowledge when the need arises without being bored.
