Best Price: $131.95 $110.00
James Kalat's best-selling INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY does far more than cover major theories and studies; it encourages you to question the information and ask yourself, "How was this conclusion reached?" and "Does the evidence really support it?" In this student-praised text, Kalat challenges your preconceptions about psychology to help you become a more informed consumer of information not only during your college experience but, also as you venture into your post-college life. With his humorous writing style and hands-on "Try It Yourself" exercises, Kalat puts you at ease and gets you involved with what you are studying so that you can succeed in your course.

The best all-around book for the general intro class By A8HXFGUZZF5C7 on 2004-08-23
I have been teaching large sections of Introductory Psychology for many years. In that time, I have used many books and have had a good opportunity to evaluate their relative merits.
First, I'll talk about how I teach and how different books may fit the demographics of a class. Intro books can vary along a number of factors, including readability, technical completeness, political correctness, and conceptual support. Classes of students can vary interms of preparation level for the information and reading skills.
Many times, books sacrifice readability for more information, or vise versa. A book that is readable, complete, and supports its concepts with examples and research - is rare.
I love Worth and Loftus, but find that it is too complex for many students in a general intro class (though it is great for honors classes). I have used Myers, but find that it sacrifices accuracy and completeness for readability. In that sense, Worth/Loftus shoots too high and Myers shoots too low.
I have found that Kalat shoots right on target for my purposes.
The first things I look for in a text are: 1) How it covers biopsychology, 2) How it covers sensation and perception, and 3) How it covers Learning and behaviorism.
Many books will gloss over this information leaving students able to read the material, but scratching their heads about what it means. Other books go into so much detail that students feel pounded and still scratch their heads.
Kalat was able to cover these technical topics in such a way as to make this information understandable, without going farther than necessary. Any book can cover the fluffier stuff in psychology, but few can do as well with the technical stuff.
In addition, I have not found examples of political bias or pandering to certain ideas just because they are they current fad.
I will probably be using this text for quite a while.
A balanced, easy to read, and in depth intro to psychology. By A1LXK77RJ3U640 on 1999-10-22
Kalat's book is the textbook for my Introduction to Psychology course. I think the book contains all the items important to the course, as well as some interesting, more in-depth information. Its strong point is the amusing text, as well as the frequent proof that UFO's don't exsist. His concept checks make it real easy to decide whether you know the material well enough to pass the test or not. Its also great to see he is not particularly long winded on any one subject, although the book ends up being pretty long. The examples also help a lot. Overall a very good book.
Most interesting textbook I have. By A1DJ6SEKZHMAIW on 2001-03-21
Kalat knows how to write so that this information is memorable and interesting. Funny anecdotes, concept checks, interesting additional facts are all included. A fine textbook for an intro to psychology. Makes you want to continue learning more.
Great text book! By A3FBRTLSWDA1I4 on 2005-01-13
I took a Intro. to Psychology course as a Prerequisite for Nursing school. Kalat explains everything clearly with great pictures, charts, examples, graphs, etc. I got an A in the course and I give the book an A as well. I also highly recommend the study guide that goes along with this book, it came in very handy and is complete with practice tests for each chapter.
