For the girls in your life, please buy this now! By AKMEY1BSHSDG7 on 2007-10-01
Well, I bought this one as a gift for a friend's daughter, but I'll be darned if I didn't want to keep it for myself!
I've always wanted to know the perfect way to annoy people in an elevator, analyze handwriting, knit with just my fingers, master math and whistle really, really loudly!
All this and much, much more can be mastered thanks to Juliana Foster's book, which is, incidentally, a total KEEPER!
The Girls' Book By A3GE4IOOIJELV8 on 2007-10-27
Foster, Juliana. The Girls' Book: How To Be The Best At Everything. Illustrated by Amanda Enright. Scholastic, Inc. 2007
This compact little guide provides advice on many issues of concern to girls including: "How to look your best in photos" and "How to put together the best dance routines." The presentation is in a question and answer format with some black and white illustrations, and diagrams. The over 75 responses, some as brief as half a page, others as long as a couple of pages cover a wide range of topics: "How to do a su doku puzzle" "How to survive in the desert" and "How to annoy your family and friends". Some responses describe accurately how to make an item, like an origami frog, while others are clearly tongue-in-cheek, "How to cross Niagara Falls on a tightrope." The lack of pizzazz is a drawback when children are accustomed to bright colors and vivid design, and may result in low sales.
Superficial By A2WZNM833CJH82 on 2007-10-10
There are many things in How To Be The Best At Everything (The Girls' Book) to be the "best" at, but they are all one-pagers with superficial directions. This and the companion book for boys - How To Be The Best At Everything (The Boys' Book) - are a waste of shelf space. Save your money!
wonderful book By on 2007-09-12
This book shows you how to be the best at everything. I think it is a great book. It shows you how to do great stuff like building a campsite in the wilderness, annoying people in elevators, making your own bubblebath, making a shake without a blender, and making sugermice. I liked it all. So if you are planning on reading it, I hope you like it.

Hilarious book - LOVE IT!! By A3P0W2P80JVMZQ on 2007-10-13
I bought this book for my 11-year-old niece. LOVE IT! If I didn't love her so much, I would keep it for myself! It was hilarious to read - from the HOW TO EXPLAIN WHY YOU WERE LATE FOR SCHOOL to the HOW TO ACT LIKE A CELEBRITY to the HOW TO ANNOY PEOPLE IN THE ELEVATOR sections. I even had my husband smirking and laughing as I read him the sections out loud. I then even called my mother to read to her, and I laughed all over again with her. I can't wait to see my niece read it and learn these very important skills! :) If you're looking for a serious book to get your child - this isn't it. But if you're looking for something that will spark their imagination, hold their interest, and make them laugh then this book is it.
- Love this book!
     By A1DE7SVVPOS3GB on 2007-10-16
This book is a huge amount of fun! My nearly 9-year-old daughter loves it. She's particularly fond of how to make your own lip gloss. I was rolling with laughter when the first topic I opened to was on how to cope with a zombie attack! Too funny! Ms. Foster's book will make a great gift.
- Better title?
     By A333GOYMHJIHZ8 on 2008-06-24
A better title for this book would be
A girls guide on how to be an obnoxious, ignorant, stuck up brat.
Not only are today's younger girls becoming more superficial, misinformed, ignorant, and mindless, this book only reinforces it by providing a form of authority to support lousy behavior.
I read through this book and every page boggled my mind at how anyone would want their young daughters to read this kind of garbage.
Yes, this book is full of misinformation (the section on animals), tells girls to behave like stuck up snobs (celebrity page), and promotes irritating and obnoxious behavior (how to annoy people). So what does a girl gain from reading this? She doesn't become more educated, Doesn't become more informed, doesn't become smarter, doesn't get to think about anything, doesn't become better at anything.
Looks like anyone with any kind of idea can publish any lousy book nowadays and make money by taking advantage of people's apathy about everything.
- Really good book for kids
     By A2U4X4OZ0NMMVB on 2007-11-08
It has a lot of interesting ideas for a girl and is funny as well. My daughter says "it's really good", though she hasn't read the whole book yet. Now my wife has swiped it to read.
It's a series of short vignettes, half to two pages long. Some are preposterous and others are indispensable. So say the ladies of the house....
- Bits of Valuable Advice That I Used in a Too Brief Format on Many Subjects
     By A1K1JW1C5CUSUZ on 2008-01-17
I read this book before going on a trip with my daughter. While we were away, she struggled with su doku puzzles and I was able to use the section in this book to help her. Later in the trip, I stepped in something that made my running shoes smell like I had had a run in with a skunk. Upon returning home, I began applying the remedies in this book and my shoes smell better than when I left home. Thank you, Ms. Foster!
I also liked the sections on making a friendship bracelet (an essential skill for our daughters), preparing a bird feeder, winning a staring contest, pressing flowers (another essential girl activity in our family), grooming a horse (a much contemplated, but never done, activity at our house), making a fake mess, walking the dog with a yo-yo (very difficult for our daughters), drawing with wet chalk, sand castle building, eating with chopsticks (hard for our daughters), making a French braid (often done here), finding the North Star, growing a crystal, making bread, finding your blind spot, and performing ballet.
I didn't like the goofy sections. I'm not sure the humor would have worked with our daughters. This is humor for very adventuresome girls which our daughters weren't.
Some of the sections were well-intentioned but didn't provide enough detail such as how to whistle loud. Illustrations of that section would have helped a lot.
Other sections just didn't get there such as how to study for exams. It's the kind of advice you would give someone trying to memorize spelling words rather than study for something more rigorous. The section on surviving in the desert doesn't mention taking extra salt before going into the desert.
I thought the section on keeping a secret diary was diabolically too clever. My wife wouldn't have been able to read our daughter's writing if they had read that section. My wife would have been a basket case.
Both of our daughters were into design, color, and beautiful images. This book looks like a 1935 version on this subject and wouldn't have appealed to them.
I'm glad such a book was published, however, because mastering these tasks can bring a lot of joy to a girl (or to a boy playing with a girl).
- Great book!

- A Successful Gift!
     By A2E2GUNXXLRB86 on 2008-01-18
It's always hard to shop for other people's children even if they are your friends. But this book made me look good. Within 10 seconds of opening her gift, my friend's daughter was deeply immersed in it - ignoring the rest of us! Meets my definition of a successful gift.
- Fantastic reading for my daughter and me!

Bought this book for my daughter and then ended up reading it from end to end.
- How-To book offers funny experiments and deals with serious situations
     By A2M5XAY6PBIGMQ on 2008-01-28
Opening THE GIRLS' BOOK: HOW TO BE THE BEST AT EVERYTHING proved itself to be an adventure. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book offered something for everyone, from the sensible to the outrageous. Have you ever wondered how to be a math magician? How about how to survive in a horror film? This book offers many fun activities for children of all ages- such as how to write a haiku, make a kite, grow a crystal, execute a high dive, play sudoku, or strum a guitar. Unexpected in this book however are the sensible realistic issues that everyday children face.
Tucked away in the nooks and crannies of the book, though they are few, are the serious issues this book approaches. Issues such as how to deal with a bully and how to study for exams are things that might not be expected in this type of a book but they manage to fit seamlessly. The issues are approached with a sense of humor making the reader laugh and offering realistic advice to those who may be scared to ask. The book was wonderfully funny and entertaining as well as educational, I learned how to finally do a sudoku puzzle. The nature of the book does not lend itself to a continuous read but is better handled when broken up into small bits offering the reader a chance to experiment with many of the instructions in the book.

I've been a daring girl since I was born. This book really moved me along. The ideas contained within are creative and fun for every girl! This book is for girls, everyone else should read the Adventures With Boys series, I did!
- Amazon asked me to review this.
     By A15X2QXODTENXL on 2008-06-09
The book was purchased for a 12 year old's birthday. The binding was amazing for this type of product: foil embossing, and counter-sunk as well. The tweener loved it and spent a lot of time with her mother going through it. I intend on looking into the rest of the series next year. Can you get much better than that?
- Great book!
