Best Price: $6.99 $3.05

A sturdy board book edition of the classic favorite finds six lovable animals using humorous rhymes to help Lloyd the llama discover what kind of animal his mother is."

The board book version of this popular recitation of animal characteristics is equally as delightful as other editions, with one key improvement: it's inedible. This robust reissue follows lovable Lloyd the llama on his quest to find out what percentage of the baby animal population has llamas for mamas. The rhymes are original and infectious, and the riddles are sure to have children shouting out the answers in anticipation of turning the page.

Youngsters often exhibit an insatiable appetite for adorable baby animals, and Is Your Mama a Llama provides plenty of fodder for fawning. Illustrator Steven Kellogg, however, manages to keep the pictures sweet without being saccharine. And rest assured, no matter how often your little one is compelled to kiss the critters, the sturdy board-book format will stand the test of time (and of course, slobber). (Ages 0 to 4)

  • Loved by all my toddler nieces and nephews and their parents

    By A3UQH6H2FUAJ2R on 2000-07-10
I've given this book to every one of my nieces and nephews between 1-3 yrs of age and they love it! (Disregard the 4-8 age recommendation) The rhymes are fun to hear, the words are silly and the pictures are cute! They just keep giggling and their parents laugh reading it to them! This is always a winner as a gift (especially for Moms on Mother's Day). I now give it to new Moms-to-be at the baby shower along with my other favorite, Barnyard Dance.

  • Instantly endearing!

    By A34BRW1K1QTRBI on 2001-04-19
I was first introduced to this book as part of a college course on literature for children, and instantly fell in love. Rythmic verses of this rhyming text with fill-in-the-blank style pauses at the end of each stanza help early readers learn to read, young children squeal with glee, and everybody within ear shot get the urge to get up and dance! In fact, a reading of this book has been produced on tape, with a wonderful latino-mambo background beat; it's also available in oversized format for reading in a group.

  • Great for all ages!

Despite the recommendation that this book is for ages 4-8, my toddler absolutely loves it! She will bring it to me and insist on reading it over and over. The rhyming is wonderful, and so are the descriptions of the animals. Of course, the fact that my mother raises llamas makes this book even more dear to my daughters hearts.

  • Very sweet book, makes you wish that your Mama was a Llama

    By A2LNY91HT331GI on 2004-01-30
My young daughters (now 3 and 7) dearly love this book. We have it memorized. It is sweet and the illustrations are beautiful. It is one of the few young books that I never get bored of reading. It is definitely a classic children's book.

  • Has all the elements of a great kid's book

    By A1VYFEJM12ZP11 on 2005-03-26
I have read this book to my son frequently, ever since he was about 9 or 10 months old. The book has a rhyme and rhythm to it, and my son even from a young age picked up on it and can anticipate each "part" of the story. I think that this is very helpful to get the young ones to begin to enjoy books. The words are used in a repetitive manner and I think it will help him learn them better, and he likes the illustrations of the animals. Even though he is still quite young, I know this is a book that he will cherish as he begins to read on his own.

  • I love this book more than my 4 month old son!
    By on 2000-08-04
This book is fantastic and my son loves the wonderful sound of the words when I'm reading him this book. A friend gave me her old copy and I've just fallen in love. I'm going to buy this book for my friend; she's going to love it I'm sure of it! Deborah and Steve we another wonderful book soon.

  • Fun for kids to hear and adults to read!
    By ACUPCXAMYCWN8 on 2005-09-20
One of the rare children's books that is clever enough for the adults to enjoy but fun enough for the kids to like. Besides, using the "Rhonda responded" rhyme is a stroke of genius.

  • Is your Mama a Llama?
    By on 2006-05-19
I believe that children should know that they have a mother and father. I also think the child should know who their parents are. The book Is Your Mama A Llama by Debroah Guarino is a good example of knowing who your parents are. I this book, a young llama asks all his friends if their moms are llamas. This book has an excellent plot. The book is easy to read and easy to understand. Also, the book flows well. I recommend that parents read this book with their children so their children understand how much they need their parents.

  • Curious and adorable little llama!
    By A190NEVRC9XPMX on 2006-08-29
This was given as a gift and I'm so glad, because I'm not sure I would have purchased it on my own. This story of a inquisitive little llama teaches about exploration, discovery and diversity. The story is told through "whimsical rhyming riddles" (quoting the back cover) and the illustrations are gorgeous! This is a great way to expose your child to rhyming and different animals.

  • I know it by heart
    By A2XAD07RBW0KGH on 2007-06-25
A friend of my parents gave me this book as a baby shower gift because her son loved it, and after continuously putting away outgrown clothes and toys over the past year, this book has outlasted every other gift!

I've been reading this to my son almost every night since he was born, and he gets a huge grin on his face as soon as I read the first sentence: "Is your mama a llama?" The story follows a little llama as he asks each of his animal friends this question. The rhyming is creative but has an easy flow as you read, which makes it good for keeping a little one's attention as well as for learning how rhyming works as they get older. The illustrations are colorful and detailed (not just outlines). My son always reached up to touch the orange "sun" that appears on several pages, so I kept telling him what it was, and now that he's older he will touch it if I ask where the sun is. I can see that this will be a good book to "grow into" as I read the description of an animal and he can "guess" what it is before I turn the page.

This book is a very special part of our bedtime ritual. At this rate we'll wear it out before the next child comes, but I definitely plan to buy another copy!

  • Excellent, Brilliant, Charming "Dr.Seuss-like" Rhymes
    By on 1998-05-11
Simply a must-have for all children everywhere! Great for reading aloud - sure to be a fast favourite for everyone.

Needs to be made available outside the USA - a long way to go to find one if you do not have access to Amazon.com, all in the UK to whom I have given a copy find it delightful!

How about it Scholastic? What about a UK edition? Any more in store by this talented Author?

  • Great read-aloud book
    By on 1998-03-17
This is one of my 18-month-old's favorite books. It has plenty of repetition, rhyme, and rhythm to keep him interested, and enough variation and illustration details to allow for a lot of variations beyond the basic "just read the text".

  • Is Your Mama a Llama
    By AZBBLHCHANQK3 on 2001-05-22
My eleven-month-old daughter loves the melodic verse of this book. And so does her father, who has it stuck in his head like a song after we read it. I love the illustration style, as the earthy colors are very pleasing to the eye. This is a family favorite.

  • Great Pre-school Storytime Book
    By A2VVCHVEA8IQ5E on 2002-09-26
"Is your Mama a llama? I asked my friend Rhonda." "I think not, is how Rhonda responded." Little llama wants to know if his friend's mothers are llamas too. Superb, rich illustrations of the baby animals and mamas, including such exotics as bats and swans make this a Storytime favorite. My group has this one memorized and love to read along with the illustrations. Remember they are only three! New members to the group feel comfortable giving the correct responses with the rest of the tried and true. Treat your group to the bigger than life version. Fun to turn the huge pages and the illustrations translate well.

  • fun to read out loud
    By A1V8MTRGPZNBSB on 2005-08-03
This book is my nanny's favorite and after purchasing it, I can see why. The rhymes are funny and fun to say out loud, and you won't get tired of reading this to your baby.

  • Wonderful, Fun To Read Book
    By A9REEKTBGZ5W0 on 2005-12-09
This story is so sweet and the rhyming makes it so fun to read. I got it from our library and I think I loved reading it as much as my daughter loved having it read to her. It is definitely one of the best books I've come across for infants and young babies.

  • Outstanding book!
    By A1H0NVAOZAY475 on 2000-02-11
My daughter loves this book, and so does every kid who visits our house! I read it over and over, with it's rhyming text and wonderful illustrations, I still enjoy it even after all the readings.

  • Llovely Llittle Llama Llegend
    By on 1997-06-12
Riveting. Filled with suspense as the reader questions whether Lloyd will ever find anyone whose mother is of his own species. This story definitely bucks the trend of most of the children's picture books being published today which are either exceedingly preachy or insultingly simple. "Is Your Mama a Llama?" is neither. It is well-balanced between its illustrations and its narrative. A clever surprise is inserted as Lloyd finds Llyn although I would have preferred if she had been named Llullu which is what I would name a female llama if I had one.

  • From a toddler's perpective
    By on 1997-06-21
This is one of my daughters favorite books. At 18 months she started reading this book to me saying ; "Mama? Llama? Nooo (shaking her head)". It's easy and its fun

  • Llamalicious
    By on 2001-07-10
I read this to my youngest son, Mizak, and he loved it. The illustrations compliment the verse extremely well and Miz fell in love with the character: Lloyd the Llama - he actually told me he wanted to be a llama someday. I'm now intruiged to get a copy of this on tape, after reading the previous review, to listen to it being read with a mambo beat. I thank you and Mizak thanks you. We'd definitely recommend this to every "llama" we know.

  • Our favorite book
    By on 2001-11-25
As a parent you often times must read books over and over again the wonderful illustrations make this book a joy to read which is a good thing for us because this book is my 18 month old sons favorite thing even over a teddy or blanket.
    This book is the best

  • Not as good as I thought?
    By on 2002-03-09
My children did not enjoy this book as much as I thought they might. The illustrations are darker, mute tones... not a lot of curb appeal. I was not too impressed with the story itself.

  • Is your Mama a Llama?
    By AHN4RAYU9JRC5 on 2002-09-12
Is your mama a llama I asked my friend...? This phrase is repeated through out the book giving the intended audience of a pre-schooler the chance to assist in "reading" the book.
The sing-song verse clues the listener and reader to what each species Lloyd's friends are.

I have read this book to my pre-k to 1st grade classes and all have loved to join in the reading AND have requested to read it again and again!

This is a great book for the emergant reader.

  • I love the finale of this book!
    By on 2004-01-10
This book is great-with a unique finale! At the end it says, "My mama's a-Llama! And this is...THE END!" In fact, whenever I watch a cartoon that ends with the words, "The End" onscreen, I recite this story in little bits and towards the end I say, "My mama's a llama! And this is..." and then the words, "The End" appear onscreen.

  • Great Book!

I don't even have to write a review of this CD, because words cannot describe how awesome this book is. Just buy it. You'll know hwat I mean.

    Llamas kick butt

  • My Son Loved it!
    By A3BOAT1DFBGAGW on 2005-09-19
When I first read the book I did not think that my 3 year old son would like it but he has just loved it. I accidentally purchased the board book so I will have to be more careful in the future.

  • I love this book as much as my toddler does
    By A1WMV2RP0PO7DV on 2005-09-30
I saw this book at a friend's house and liked it so much I ordered it online. I enjoy reading it as much as my son enjoys hearing it. I bought several to give out as Christmas presents for the other babies and toddlers in my family.

  • Great Book
    By on 2007-03-24
I recomend this book to the many young readers out there. It shows a variety of animals and a descripton of what they do. It encourages kids below five years of age to like animals. This book also so creative writing in a way rhyming. Well I am twelve years old and enjoyed this.
Anyway I had to read it for a book report - Edgar Garcia

  • So Much Fun to Read!
