"The transition from elementary to middle school can be a scary time for both students and their parents. Dr. Parks’s book is real-life advice from a master teacher that will address most of your concerns." Tommy Hurt Principal,Georgetown Middle School. Georgetown, KY "An excellent handbook which parents of every new middle schooler should read, and reread with their son or daughter as they begin these formative and impressionable years of middle school. Herein are the keys to success.”Dr. Dallas Blankenship Superintendent,Scott Co. Public Schools Parents are seldom—if ever—prepared for the enormous changes their child faces entering middle school. The sheltered, structured, and nurturing environment that is elementary school gives way to the fast-paced, organized chaos of middle school. Students often feel more thrown in, rather than eased into, the middle school world, and parents of first-time middle schoolers often feel more lost than their children. The sixth grade is the time when Mom and Dad start to feel they are losing their little one forever, and—in a very real sense—they are. Help! My Child is Starting Middle School! is merely an effort to help parents and their children get off to a successful start in middle school. Although primarily written for parents, portions of the book can be read and used by middle schoolers themselves. At the end of each chapter are presented numerous real-world middle school situations, which may very well occur. As these are read, parents should consider how they might address the situations, and then discuss with their child their thoughts, and how they might deal with alternatives. In discussing these together, both parent and middle schooler will be better prepared for what’s coming in middle school.

"Brief, practical, and a must for parents and kids entering this whole new world of middle school!" By A1ZYO9RWQMF1O5 on 2007-09-01
As a parent, I know there are some things I wanted my child to know before beginning 6th grade. Problem was, I wasn't sure exactly what many of those things were, or just how to discuss them. This book addresses perfectly, the needs for parents with my dilemma.
Written for parents AND new middle schoolers, "Help! My Child is Starting Middle School!" is a no fluff little handbook with cogent discussions on everything from middle school conduct, to grades, to parental (helpful) websites.
The strength of this book is not really the new information. It is how the information is presented. "The Ten Commandments for Parents", and similar such lists for students, is a very nice touch, and as practical and relevant as could be imagined.
If you have a son or daughter beginning middle school or junior high, know that they are entering a whole new world. This book makes the difficult transition much easier.
Great resource, a MUST for parents of Sixth Graders! By A38D6XIVO9PHYP on 2007-09-02
When I saw the title of this book, I was hooked. That was exactly how I felt - my baby was going to middle school, and I wasn't sure what to expect! Having read other books by Dr. Parks, I knew this one would be useful, and it was!
In this book, there are lessons about homework, behavior, character, peer pressure, learning independence, gaining responsibility, and so much more. My child wasn't just going to a new school, she was entering a whole new world - one that neither of us had any experience with - and that made us both nervous. With the use of this book, I feel that we are both ready to make this step a succesful one!
While we still worry about the lockers and the hallways, I'm sure both myself and my daughter will manage to make this sixth grade year a great one. I have Mr. Parks to thank!
This book is NOT just for incoming sixth grade parents, however. It provides a structure for any parent of a middle schooler who may be facing challenges to their success in any of the grades of middle school. There are even helps on how to talk to the teachers and how to maximize the home/school partnership.
I highly reccomend this book for other parents facing this daunting event!
"Parents of 6th graders should put this at the top of a short list of 'must have' books!" By A24JHD2IZJMXI on 2007-09-02
Well, after reading this little gem, I've decided that there was an awful lot of stuff I couldn't prepare my daughter for in middle school. I just wish I'd had something this helpful when my son was a 6th grader.
Help! My Child is Starting Middle School!: A Survival Handbook for Parents is written in a non-threatening conversational style. While some parents and kids might consider it a bit 'cutesy' at times (e.g., "Ten Bees That Always Sting in Middle School!"), I really liked the down-to-earth approach.
The most helpful parts of the book are the PRACTICAL real-world situations concluding each chapter. I am able to discuss these will my daughter, knowing that they are situations she might very well face.
The appendices contain some great learning style paradigms which parents can do with their middle schoolers to find out how they learn best. Teachers might do well to do this with their students, because my son's teacher thought every child learned by lecture alone.
In short, for this price, every parent of a new middle schooler should put this book at the top of a short list of 'must haves'.
"The secret to middle school success: prepared PARENTS!" By A2ZNKI18Q1L2JY on 2007-09-04
I can sum it up by saying: "What a great idea!" Maybe we should have a class on this.
Who would have thought about a book for parents, about middle school? Although there are a couple of chapters for the kids, the purpose of this book is to prepare PARENTS to learn how to help their kids be better middle schoolers.
I would not have thought one book could address both the parent/student aspect of this subject. Not only does it do it in a friendly, conversational style, this book also encourages parents to discuss middle school issues WITH their children. And children supported by parents who are aware of what middle school really entails is the recipe for successful middle schooling.
Kudos on putting such vital yet neglected information in a simple, inexpensive handbook. Now, if someone could write about how to get my eighth grader ready for high school....
"Amazing--how just the right questions can open up a whole new insight for a mother ..." By A21XPWLO3SYX6I on 2007-09-07
I swear to you--that's my kid on the cover! :-)
I cannot add a whole lot to what others have said, but what helped me most was the 'Teacher Conferencing Suggestions'. I admit to being a little intimidated at times when I am sitting with five teachers. This part of the manual alone was worth the price of the book. But my 6th grader really liked the "10 Bees that always sting in middle school!".
It was hard getting my child to sit down with me and discuss the middle school scenarios. Of course, he thought he had all the answers. But when we did the learning styles, and 'philosophy of life' tests, I learned more about my little boy than I'd ever known before. Amazing--how just the right questions can open up a whole new insight for a mother toward her child! Amazing too, how fast they grow up. Sad to say, this book would be wasted on an 8th grader.
Nice little book for mamma's of middle schoolers.
