Don Freeman's classic character, Corduroy, is even more popular today then he was when he first came on the scene over thirty years ago. These favorite titles are ready for another generation of children to love.
Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending, so you may also want to seek out Dan Freeman's next creation, A Pocket for Corduroy. (Ages 3 to 8)

Ive Always Wanted A Good Toddler Story By A1SYLII0808HD6 on 2001-05-25
Did the screenwriters of the recently released "Bridget Jones' Diary" lift Colin Firth's line "I like you just the way you are" from this wonderful 1968 kids' book (see the penultimate page's "I like you the way you are")? Well, probably not...but in both instances it's a very effective and heartfelt line, capturing the essence of unconditional, lasting love.Corduroy is a cute little stuffed bear who nobody wants to buy: There are bigger and newer toys, and besides, the button is missing from one strap of his overalls. Only Lisa shows interest that day, but her mother hesitates and they leave without him. While looking for the button after the store closes, Corduroy experiences the wonders of a big department store: The elevator and the new beds lined in rows: "This must be a palace...I guess I've always wanted to live in a palace." Lisa returns the next day and buys him with her own money, and the sugarcoated ending strikes up just the right amount of sentiment without becoming overbearing (no pun intended). "This must be home," he [Corduroy] said. "I know I've always wanted a home!" And then: "You must be a friend," said Corduroy. "I've always wanted a friend." "Me too!" said Lisa, and gave him a big hug. Powerful, misty-eye making stuff! Beautiful simple color pictures, and 28 pages of adventure and sweet love. Awwww-inspiring (pun intended). Highly recommended for the toddler set!
Sweet, sweet story. By A3ARV0MHB509C9 on 2000-10-31
This sweet bear has been around for several generations. Living in a department store, Corduroy wanders off for the night. Up the escalator onto the floor with the beds and the lamps. Aha, he needs a new button to replace the lost button on his corduroy overalls. He pulls and pulls a button from a mattress, creating quite a racket in the process. The night watchman comes to investigate and finds the bear hiding under a blanket. The nightwatchman carries Corduroy down the escalator and places him back on the shelf. You see, the little girl's mother told Lisa that she did not want Corduroy because he had was missing a button. The following day Lisa returns with her saved piggy bank money, buys the bear and takes him home to his very own bedroom. This book is incredibly sweet and is appropriate for 2 years old and older. What's more, FAO Schwartz actually sells a Corduroy bear. What a treat. A wonderful gift for a birthday or holiday. Highly, highly recommended.
Great Winner By on 2007-11-28
I loved this teddy bear who longed for his home and his mother. I like this story of not only receiving but also giving love. Corduroy was lucky enough to find Lisa but not all teddy bears are that lucky... Corduroy is exactly the kind of teddy bear that I love.
Other great books that I highly recommend are The Very Hungry Caterpillar board book and especially Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2.
Everybody loves Corduroy By on 1999-12-05
The little bear named Corduroy may not be as beautiful and perfect as the doll sitting next to him on the toy shelf, but he is more loveable. Corduroy is learning some of the struggles in life, just as we do in our lives. He is desperately searching for his lost botton because he wants a little girl to buy him. But the only thing the girl is searching for is not on the outside, it is on the inside. She loves Corduroy for Corduroy. This teaches children an excellent lesson. Love people for their personality.
Everyone should know this lovely book! By AILQ1G3PB3249 on 2000-08-07
Cordoroy is the perfect children's book. It is a gentle, sweet tale of a little bear in cordoroy overalls waiting to be purchased in a department store. A real little girl sees him and falls in love with him, but her mother says she doesn't have money to buy him and he's missing a button. After the store closes, all the toys with faces close their eyes except Cordoroy. Instead, he travels the department store searching for a button because he didn't know he was not perfect. He does not solve his problem. Cordoroy is back on the toy shelf the next morning. The little girl, Lisa returns to buy him. She takes him home, sews on a button, and provides him with his own little bed right beside hers. "I've always wanted a friend!" he says. This beautifully illustrated book has a simple text and huge appeal to anyone with a heart.
- I LOVE this book!
     By A1KHMG4CXAOJDS on 1999-12-01
Corduroy is one of my favorite books ever. I read it when I was young and I still enjoy it now. It teaches kids that things and people don't have to be perfect for a person to love and care for them. Also, this book helps one to explore his or her imagination through Corduroy's adventures. I especially like the ending when it shows that the girl cares so much about the bear that she comes back and gets him the next day with the money she has saved at home.
- This is such a touching story
     By on 2002-12-12
This story shows that it doesn't matter what you look like or what other people think of you, someone will always love you for who you are. After reading that book I always wanted a bear just like Corduroy with the missing button and all. I thought how it was so cute that the little girl came back with all her piggy bank money and bought the tiny bear that didn't even look new. Most kids will see things in the store and beg for it then forget about it once they are told no. There must of been something about Corduroy that you will have to read to find out.
- Five paws. . .uh, stars, for this one. . .
     By A3N0HBW8IP8CZQ on 2001-01-24
Those elegant downtown department stores that close at 6pm are getting fewer and far between, but this book takes you back to a time when a visit to one could fulfill a child's most fervent wish or dream. Corduroy is sitting on the shelf in the toy department when Lisa spots him and, of course, wants her mom to buy him. Her mother says no, because he's missing a button from his suspenders. Well, Corduroy goes looking for the missing button that night, thinking that's why he hasn't been picked to go home with someone yet. This story is almost a primitive variation on "Toy Story," where the toys come to a life of their own when humans aren't around. . .and of course, like Woody, Buzz, and even the Misfit Toys from "Rudolph," Corduroy knows that his purpose in life is to love and be loved by a child. If your child watches the "Corduroy" shorts on PBS, get this book and let him or her see how he first found a home. I hate to say it, but I nearly always cry when I get to the last two pages. I just love happy endings:)
- Both you and your kids will love Corduroy
     By A2B21POKQ3N09H on 2002-02-12
There's something about kids books that, at a certain level, is inexplicable. Corduroy is a nice little story about a toy bear roaming around a department store at night searching for his lost button and then being acquired by a little girl. The story is sweet, and the books illustrations are vivid, colorful and warm. The same can be said about a lot of books, many of which we owned over the years. Yet the kids still go back over and over (and over and over...) to a few cherished favorites, and, in our family, Corduroy was one of those favorites. For a while I thought it was just our family that felt this way about the book, bus when friends of the kids came by they knew Corduroy immediately--and he was on their night time reading lists as well. Enchantment is a dynamic all its own--and this book, for whatever reason, enchants. Buy it--neither you or your kids will ever forget Corduroy.

Corduroy is the story of a cute brown bear who lived in the toy department of a big store. Each day he would wait for a child to come along and buy him and take him home. Each day the store was filled with people buying all sorts of things, but no one ever seemed to want the small bear in green overalls, because him overalls were missing a button. One morning a little girl came up to Corduroy and told her mom that he was the bear she had always wanted. The mother told the girl not today, and that he doesn't look new because he's missing a button. That night, Corduroy decides to take an adventure and search the store for his missing button. A night guard find's him though, and returns him to the toy department. The next day the little girl returns for Corduroy. She brings all the money from her piggy bank and buys Corduroy. When she return's home, she sews Corduroy on a new button. I recommend reading Corduroy, it is a classic children's story that everyone should hear at least once in their life.
- Corduroy a bear that wants to find a friend.
     By on 2005-01-31
Corduroy is a wonderful children's book that is great for children to read. In this story Corduroy is a teddy bear in a department store. Everyday thousands of people walk by but no one wants to buy this teddy bear. One day a little girl told her mother that this was the bear she always wanted, however, her mother told the little girl that spent to much money today and that the bear looked old. The girl's mother told the little girl that Corduroy was missing a button. So that night when the department store was closed Corduroy went through the store looking for a button. He traveled upstairs where he found a mattress, he ripped the button off the mattress, however, he knocked over a lamp and the security guard came up to see what was going on. The security guard back to the shelf. The next morning the same little girl came back with her piggy bank money and bought Corduroy. She sat down and began to sew a button on him, saying, "I like you the way you are but you will be more comfortable with your shoulder strap fixed," and a new friend was born. I would recommend this to all parents because the story has a good moral in that it shows that no matter what is wrong with you somebody loves you.
- Beware - you'll soon know it by heart
     By A3FHSLWEMH7JD8 on 2000-10-24
This is one of those books that adults, in desperation, soon need to hide. At age two, my nephew so fell in love with Corduroy that he constantly requested a re-reading and soon knew the text by heart. The kids will love the tale, which is great fun, though it will leave the reader wishing toddlers could read to themselves.
- Fun bear story
     By A4H4KYSM2KQ85 on 2004-03-02
A brown teddy bear sits in a toy shop waiting to find a real home. He catches the eye of a little girl, but her mother says she can't take him home because he's missing a button on his overalls. Determined to find a home, the bear goes on a nighttime hunt through the store for his button. The hunt almost ends in disaster. But the next morning the little girl returns to the store and takes him home at last. The book is not scary. The human characters are shown to be African Americans. The book has about 250 words.
- This Board Book is Not the Original Coruroy Story, but We Like it Anyway
     By A1ZGPS1708ON7W on 2005-09-13
When I bought this board book, its description was accompanied on Amazon.com by lots of reviews referring to the original Corduroy story, the one where the sweet bear is wandering around the department store at night, looking for a button. I had read that to my older children when they were toddlers, and wanted to buy a copy for my one-year-old twins. When the board book arrived, we realized that it is not the original story, but rather a selection of pictures taken from other Corduroy board books we already have. It shows Cordury getting dressed, playing with his trucks, and looking at his books (all from "Corduroy's Day"). I believe it has pictures from "Corduroy's Busy Street" as well.
This board book is a cut-out sort of book, so the entire book is in the shape of Corduroy Bear.
My babies have "Corduroy" dolls in their cribs, and can't seem to get enough of looking at the "real" Corduroy in the books, so this book was a success for us. However, if you are looking for the "Corduroy" story, or "A Pocket for Corduroy," you won't find them in this board-book format. When our twins are a little older and no longer rip the pages of standard books, we'll buy them a copy of the wonderful story of Corduroy. If you're looking for baby stories about Corduroy, I recommend the others: "Corduroy's Day," "Corduroy's Busy Street," and "Corduroy Visits the Doctor."
- A true classic---a book that stays with you over the years
     By A3DFH4CKPIT0N9 on 2000-02-08
For some reason I had overlooked reading Corduroy to my sons until just recently, at ages 5 and 2. They both loved it---listened to it spellbound and asked to hear it two more times in a row! I think this book speaks to something that many of us have as a dream---to see the night world of places we usually only see in the day, like a big department store. Most kids can also relate to having a very special bear or toy, and the scene of Corduroy home at last in Lisa's cozy room with his own little bed is so comforting and happy! I was taken back to hearing this myself many times as a child!
- Corduroy
     By on 1999-12-03
Corduroy a lovable bear that anyone can fall in love with. This book teaches us all that things in our lives don't have to be perfect for us to love them. It also teaches us to look on the inside and not just the outside because things are not always what the seem.
- A Classic; Every Child Should Have a Copy
     By on 1999-05-19
This was one of my favorite books as a child. When I was in college I bought a new copy and every time I re-read it it makes me cry. Poor, confused Courderoy looking for his button and kindhearted Lisa who wants the damaged bear despite her mother's admonition to get something nicer. A wonderful story which teaches a lesson to children about people and things that may look imperfect on the outside but who are worthy of love like anyone else. I can't wait to read it to my child (hopefully I won't break down in the middle of it).
- Mad About the Bear!
     By on 1998-03-20
Sure, Corduroy is a warm and fuzzy story about a cute little bear who hops off the toy store shelf in search of a button for his cute little overalls and eventually goes home with the cute little girl who loves him, but that in itself is not enough to make this book the beloved classic that it has become. What ultimately rings true about this sweetheart of a story is the truth it tells about what each of us, child and grownup alike, wants and needs more than anything else--namely, a home and a friend. Those are the two things Corduroy yearns for, and the author's great accomplishment is to make the reader feel the little bear's joy at the end of the story when he finds both. Every reader, regardless of age or socioeconomic status, knows intuitively that to have a devoted friend and a safe home is truly to find the gold at the end of the rainbow.
- A Family Favorite
     By A3RIX3C9SQFR3P on 2003-11-10
This story is one of my mother's, my, and daughters', and my sons'favorites. This is one book that I can actually "read it again, Mom" and enjoy it for the fifth time. Imganitive, whimsical, funny, and sweet this book embraces the most important thing of life --love. Any person who ever loved a stuffed animal, blanket, or toy will treasure this book.
- First Book I Bought For My Baby
     By A2QUR1CZ7WN7FW on 2006-03-16
I bought this book for my baby just a few months after I found out I was pregnant. It was my absolute favorite as a child and I wanted her to have it from Day One. The story and the artwork filled me with so many emotions as a kid - I remember feeling sad for the lonely little Corduroy and so full of hope and hapiness when he was taken home and loved. I remember thinking the little girl in the story was special for seeing past Corduroy's flaw, and that I should try to be more like her.
- Beware the Board Book Edition!
     By AYS52X89DXF4P on 2007-11-30
The bear-shaped board book "edition" is NOT the Corduroy story. It shouldn't even be listed as the same book. The original story is cute and poignant, and I highly recommend it. But the board book has no real narrative; it is just a list of things that Corduroy does one day. There are no other characters, no dialogue, no conflict or issues, no rhyming, nothing but "Corduroy is mailing some letters." and "Corduroy takes a bath. Look at all the bubbles." The illustrations, while nice, aren't original -- they were culled from other Corduroy books.
The book is cute enough, and my 17-month old daugther loves it because it's oversized and bear-shaped. But I was disappointed not to get the actual Corduroy story, and would not have bought it if I'd known what it was. All that said, if your child already knows and likes the original Corduroy book, this might be a nice companion.
- Not what I thought it was going to be.
     By A3KDIV1C02WIHL on 2008-04-13
When I first stumbled upon this product I thought it was a board book of the original Corduroy story. On the website when I found the original (which is what I wanted) it had a link saying they also had this in board book form. So that's what I thought I was getting. I wanted board book for my 4-month-old son because they are more durable. But it's actually a book based on the character of Corduroy. Its' a boring story listing things Corduroy did that day. It jumps from one thing to the other and isn't really a story at all but rather a list of random errands. I was disappointed to say the least.
- A funny story
     By on 1999-04-25
It was quite a funny story when Lisa wanted to buy the poor bear with no button. Her mum didn't let her buy it when Lisa wanted but she came back the next day and bought Corduroy. It was funny when Corduroy pulled the button off the bed. I loved reading this book and then I got " A Pocket For Corduroy" to read. I am 6 years old and think lots of other children would enjoy reading this book.
- When I was little this was my favorite book
     By on 1999-04-08
I am 23 years old, but this is still one of my ten favorite books, because I loved it so much when I was younger. I think so much of it that I bought a copy of it as a present for a little girl right after she was born. I wanted her to grow up reading it, like I did, because it always made me happy when I was a child. If little kids spent more time reading books like Corduroy instead of playing video games for target practice and watching all the random, unfiltered trash on television, the world would be a better place.
- Cute & Cuddly
     By on 1998-03-20
I am a high school student now and I was thrilled to see that I could have an opportunity to review one of my favorite books as a child. For those who might not know the story, "Corduroy" is about a teddy bear at a department store who looses the button to his overalls. The story is an account of this cute, huggable toy bear (reminicent of another famous yellow bear) as he searchs through the department store to find his lost button. Anyone who reads this book, whether they're an adult or a child, will have the same happy feelings as I did.
- A toy's point of view
     By A1F6VB4XM1IPZJ on 2000-10-28
Corduroy is a toy bear in a large depatrment store. Becasue of his missing a button no one wants to buy him. Corduroy takes a magical adventure searching for a button for his pants so someone would buy him. This story is humorous and supports an idea of friendship at the end. Children love this book because it is relation that they can compare to!
- Coolest Teddy Around!!!
     By A2MA6LA990TX2K on 2000-12-08
This story was very endearing. I started reading this book to my son at only 3 months and at 11 months he still loves it! This teddy experiences some really rough moments trying to find his button in a very large department store. Finally he is purchased by a young girl who falls in love with him from the moment she lays eyes on him - imperfections and all. The book is about adventure, love, friendship, responsibility, all sorts of good stuff. It is a fun read, not too long - just right.
- My Favorite Childrens Book From Childhood.
     By on 2001-05-21
Corduroy is my favorite childrens book from when I was little.I still have it in my box of favorite books. As many others have said in their reviews; Corduroy teaches the valuable lesson, "Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover". I always liked the last line of the book when Lisa says to Corduroy, "I Like You Just The Way You are" it made me cry every time. Now that I'm an adult I am buying this book for my neice and nephew so that they can enjoy this Wonderful story of Corduroy and his search for his button and a home of his own.

This is the story of a stuffed bear that lives in a department store and is not the most attractive toy in the store. He had a missing button and was a little bit scruffy. One little girl that goes into the store and loves the bear and wants him and Corduroy wants to live with her too. He is sad when the mother says that she can't have him. He goes around during the night to try and find the button that he lost so maybe someone would want him but he can't and is returned to the shelve he came from. The next day the girl came back and bought him and brought him home. They both loved each other so much and she even gave him a new button. This is a really cute book. It shows that love is something more them just how something looks. The little girl didn't care that Corduroy wasn't perfect she loved him anyway. This is really story for children because this is something that they need to know. Love is not just the way something appears its more then that. It is what is inside a person.
