#1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood takes readers from New Orleans' exclusive Garden District to the backwoods of Louisiana's mysterious bayou country in an unforgettable novel of passion and suspense that cuts straight to the heart.

When esteemed Justice Department attorney Theo Buchanan is struck ill at a New Orleans gala, Dr. Michelle Renard works fast to save his life. Soon, Theo finds himself in a race to save her when Michelle is targeted by a deadly crime ring. They call themselves the Sowing Club, a devious foursome driven by greed to accumulate millions in a secret bank account. Now they're dead set on silencing Michelle, who might know the secret behind the killing of one of their wives. Dodging a world-class hit man and a band of cunning criminals, Michelle and Theo walk a narrow path between passion and survival.

Bestselling author Julie Garwood has a new calling--contemporary romantic suspense fiction. While longtime fans of Garwood hope she won't forsake the historical romance genre that has been so successful for her, this versatile author is coming into her own as a creator of amazingly complex and detailed suspense novels. In Mercy, Theo Buchanan, the brother of FBI agent Nick Buchanan from Heartbreaker, Garwood's first foray into suspense fiction, meets surgeon Dr. Michelle "Mike" Renard when he throws up on her designer dress at a New Orleans gala. Dr. Mike saves Theo's life with an emergency appendectomy, enabling him to return to Boston and his job as a federal prosecutor.

But Theo can't stop thinking about Mike and her little hometown on the bayou. After concluding an investigation and trial that brings down a powerful organized crime syndicate, Theo receives several death threats and his boss recommends he keep a low profile. What better place to go incognito than Bowen, Louisiana, where the catfish practically throw themselves at your fishing pole and where a certain pretty young doctor is opening her new practice? But when Theo arrives, he finds life in Bowen isn't quite as idyllic as he thought. Someone has ransacked Mike's new office and seems dead set on harming her. As Theo struggles to protect Mike, he uncovers a ring of upper-crust criminals willing to do anything, even murder, to keep their dirty little secret--all $40 million of it--from being discovered. What connection could they possibly have to Mike? And why does everyone under the age of 18 keep calling Theo "Coach"? Join perennial favorite Garwood on a journey into the quirky, close-knit communities of the Louisiana bayou and the journey a man and woman devoted to their careers undertake as they fall passionately in love. --Alison Trinkle

  • Have Mercy!!

    By A3P6XI50S1W1XM on 2002-04-10
I just love Julie Garwood, I believe that she is the queen of romantic thrillers! Mercy is the newest gem in a long line of spectacular stories. It is set in the present time and revolves around an attorney named Theo Buchanan (who is the brother of Nick Buchanan from Heartbreaker) and a doctor named Michelle Renard (whom everyone calls Dr. Mike). The story takes place in New Orleans and the swampy little town of Bowen, Louisiana. If you liked Heartbreaker, this one will not disappoint.

I have always loved Ms. Garwood's historical romance novels in the past, but she has transported us to the present in the past two novels without missing a beat. She takes us on a thrilling ride!

I am still hoping that she makes Noah Clayborne her leading man in the next novel. He is my favorite character who appears in Heartbreaker as well as Mercy. It is always a pleasant surprise to see recurrent characters pop-up in her latest releases. It gives you something to look forward to. You come to really love the characters she writes about and when you see them again, it feels like a family reunion.

  • Julie has stuck gold!

    By A1X2B7H1P11DXH on 2001-09-12
Mercy, Julie Garwoods new hard cover novel, the follow up to Heartbreaker I can only describe as gold! Theo, an attorney for the Justice dept., meets Michelle, Dr. "Mike", at a huge gala in New Orleans as he's doubled over in pain. The fun starts here! I don't want to give away one minute of the suspence and romance that takes place in this novel, but to me this is the best I've read by her since Prince Charming. There's not an element missing from this book, and she's spiced it up with her trademark feisty heroine and hunky, type A, sensitive hero. I loved every minute of it, finished it in one sitting!
DO NOT MISS THIS! It left me hungry for more....

  • Have Mercy on My Romantic Soul!

    By A2LXYUFE96D43S on 2001-09-24
When I say "have mercy on my romantic soul" I mean it. Julie Garwood has gone back to her trademark of strong heroine, dashing hero, great dialogue and comic moments that made her such a popular historical romance writer. This book flows with the interaction between characters. Even though this is supposed to be a suspense thriller, to me it was more of a romantic suspense story.

Theo Buchanan, brother to the popular Nick from Garwood's novel, Heartbreaker gets his own story. What a story it is! Theo is at a snazzy event in New Orleans, about to give a speech when he is struck down with an appendicitis attack. A young woman rushes to his aid when she promptly gets thrown up on over her new dress and a black eye when Theo thinks she is trying to rob him of his gun and wallet. To his shock he later finds out the young woman is Dr. Michelle "Mike" Renard, a brilliant young surgeon from a small town in the swamps who manages to save his life. Theo is suffering from burnt out and decides to visit the small town Michelle is in the process of setting up a new clinic. His pretense is he wants to check out the fishing but he really wants to check out Michelle.

Meanwhile the suspense surrounds four friends who have been committing white-collar crimes several years. The leader, John, manages to convince the others to help him carry out a "mercy" killing on his poor wife who has supposedly been ill for several years. What the others don't realize is John wants the wife out of the way so he can inherit her money. Well, needless to say, John isn't as smart as he thinks when he finds out his wife has changed her will, left him nothing, and sent some information to Michelle that John and the others don't want made public.

I liked this book. It was funny, had wonderful characters, snappy dialogue, and a great cast of secondary characters. I would have given this book a five except for the fact that the suspense takes backseat to the romantic side. This isn't necessary a bad thing since the romance is pretty darn good but it really doesn't cut it as a "suspense thriller." However, I have to say while I didn't care for Ms. Garwood's previous novel, Heartbreaker, she has definitely redeemed herself with Mercy. Let me finish with a personal request-please--give us Noah's story!

  • NOT one of the usual great Garwood books. Her worst.

    By A232Q2N5XX0UK9 on 2001-11-10
Sorry to say, but this is not one of her best works. And since I've read all of her books (some of them multiple times) I can honestly say this is her worst. The plot was so-so, but the story and characters were incredibly underdeveloped and shallow. A brilliant surgeon falling for a guy on looks alone. One word to describe this book? BLAH!

  • Awesome second in a series

    By ANOBZWKE25SBY on 2006-01-26
The story opens with a seemingly distraught husband agonizes over the painful and slow death of his wife, as he and several friends struggle with whether to conduct a mercy killing on her behalf.

In actuality, the husband is a sociopath with visions of grandeur. He cons his buddies, who are partners in a secret society of money grubbers, into organizing her death so that he can have access to his wife's trust fund. But the joke is on him, when the will is read several weeks after her death (to insure he goes on a spending spree), and he is left with a measly $100. She leaves a substantial amount of money to her distant relatives in the swamp country, but also leaves her estranged cousin with a whole lot more - a detailed listing of her husband's ill-gotten gains.

Michelle, the cousin, is a gifted surgeon, who after making the acquaintance of Theo Buchanan, a charismatic Justice Department attorney, is forced to perform emergency surgery on him. At the invitation of her father, he returns to bayou country to fish and get to know Michelle. Instantly, he is pegged as the new football coach, which results in a lot of hilarious situations for him. And he discovers that Michelle's medical clinic has been targeted by vandals. He sticks around to lend a hand.

As Michelle's father schemes to get her and Theo together, they discover that the break-ins at her clinic might be related to a package that was delivered to her one hectic day in the OR. As Theo and Michelle work around the clock, they slowly close in on a scheme more diabolical and larger than they ever imagined.

This is the second in Garwood's Buchanan family mysteries (after "Heartbreaker", and has all the sensuality and adrenaline-packed action you come to expect from these novels, including the occasional pop up of such great secondary characters like Noah "I'm an independent contractor" Clayborne. While serial killer Mon escapes the law this time out - he is back in action in the follow up, "Killjoy."

  • First things first!
    By A3P1WJQ3SAXK4V on 2001-09-14
One has to get past their hopeful expectations that the book Garwood fans have been anxiously awaiting would be a tightly woven sequel to HEARTBREAKER. It does bring Theo Buchanan, brother of Nick from HEARTBREAKER into the limelight of a storyline that I personally found a bit less riviting then it's predecessor, but still well written in the way one expects of Ms. Garwood.

Michelle Renard, raised alone by her Louisana father when her mother suffers a stroke while giving birth to her, has a brillant mind that pulls her from life in a small bayou town into the life of a surgeon. The circumstances that take her from that of an uncultured girl to that of a beautiful, refined doctor are described powerfully and weave her involvement with Theo, an attorney, into an enthralling storyline. For an author that made the switch from medieval romance to contemporary suspense-laden romantic novels, Garwood barely misses a beat in such a dramatic switch in style and content. She may surprise, but she never disappoints. But, I'm still hoping that Noah from HEARTBREAKER eventually finds himself positioned as a main character in a future Garwood mystery!

  • More romance than suspense
    By AW1D6P2T7TF4 on 2001-09-16
Theo Buchanan is devoted to his job, much like his FBI brother Nick (star of Heartbreaker), the only difference is Theo is a Justice Department attorney.

At an exclusive party in New Orleans, Theo is struck ill and rushed to the hospital, there his life will be saved by Dr. Michelle Renard, a beautiful surgeon. While Theo is slowly falling for Michelle, he will uncover a ring of criminals who call themselves the Sowing Club.

The Sowing Club consists of four men led by John, and while their crimes have given them millions of dollars set up in a Caymans Island bank, John wants more, and he devises a brilliant planor so he thinks.

Johns wife is very wealthy so he comes up with the scheme to have one of his men kill her, so he can collect her fortune and split it among the other members. Well, Catherine had plans of her own, and before her death she devised her own plan, one that will destroy John, and the members of his club.

The deeper Theo becomes involved with the Sowing Club, he realizes that Michelle has somehow become a target, and now he is faced with the ultimate challenge of saving her life, as she had saved his.

Its a shame Mercy wasnt a better thriller, because Julie Garwood is an excellent writer: her characters are fleshed out, and the plot interesting, and well executed, but it takes a long time before anything good really happens. About two hundred pages into the book is when it becomes a thriller, whereas the rest of the novel trots along with the development of a love story, and the sub-plots involving various characters.

Readers of Ms. Garwoods romance novels may like this, but a hard-boiled thriller fan will, more than likely, be bored. Better luck next time.

  • The main characters felt more like secondary characters
    By AHGUB8RMMMNXZ on 2001-09-19
I am a die hard fan of Julie Garwood and own all of her books. I can read them over and over and never get bored. However, I don't have the feeling that I will want to do this with "Mercy."

Theo Buchanan is Nick's (from "Heartbreaker)brother and works for the Justice Dept. Michelle Renard is an exceptionally smart, small town doctor from Louisiana. The Sowing Club is a group of 4, successful mid-thirties people who have been friends for years and excell in white collar crime. Their plan is to have 40 million dollars stashed away by the time the oldest hits 40. When, John, the real genius behind the club gets increasingly despondant over his "sick" wife, the club make a choice...in order to keep John sane and continue with their money extorting ways, there will be a mercy killing.

Why do I write so much about the Sowing club and so little about Michelle and Theo? Well, there simply seems to be more to write. The budding romance of Michelle and Theo seems secondary to the development of suspense surrounding the Sowing Club and their actions. Michelle and Theo don't have the same sparks that Ms. Garwood's novels usually crackle with. A great deal of the book and Michelle and Theo's romance takes place in just one weekend. I did enjoy the suspense part of the story, but I would have really liked to see more of a story line with Michelle and Theo.

In the book, more appearances will be made by Noah Clayborne (apparently a relative from the "For the Roses" stories) and I am wonder if I am alone when I was more interested in him and perhaps a future novel about him than Michelle and Theo. However, in all honesty, I think that Ms. Garwood's true talent is in the field of historic romance. If this was any other author, they would have gotten 5 stars, but as this is Ms. Garwood, I have to give only 4. I waited an entire year for her new book and was somewhat let down.

  • Mercy by Julie Garwood
    By A2LCUQWR0DINCM on 2001-09-25
Julie Garwood has done it again! Her title "Mercy" is just a continuation of her excellence. I enjoyed this book as I have enjoyed every thing else I have read by her. I love her characters, and her plots. She gets you so involved in the story that you hate to put it down if you have to, and can easily read her straight through if time permits you to do so. This book has romance, humor, suspense, titillation, and closure. It makes sense from beginning to end and gives the reader total satisfaction from start to finish. I wait impatiently for what she offers next. To me, her books are just "GOOD READING."

  • The Sequal to Heartbreaker!
    By AN0XWUHSHRUG6 on 2002-03-20
This is the second book in a series. It was great and you don't have to have read Heartbreaker to enjoy this book. This is the story of Theo Buchanan Nick's brother. Theo is a justice department attorney who is being honored in New Orleans for the work that he has done. While in the "Big Easy" he falls sick and is rushed to the hospital where Dr. Michelle Renard saves his life. Needing to get away and relax he takes Michelles father up on the suggestion to come to the Bayou for a fishing vacation and maybe he will catch the elusive Michelle. But Theo is about to uncover a ring of criminals that are determined to maintaine their secrecy even if it means they have to kill in order to do it. Michelle's medical clinic is destroyed by someone looking for evidence and Theo is there to help. Theo and Michelle's story is great and it is set in one of my favorite places on earth. A must read for any Garwood Fan!

  • Surprisingly Wonderful
    By A2U49E41ZDMDYC on 2002-08-05
I just finished Mercy. I bought it on a whim not knowing how it would be. It was a Great book... I enjoyed the characters they held my attention throughout the whole book. I would characterize it as a Romantic Thriller. There were some dark areas of the book but I thought they were necessary to understand the storyline. I would recommend this highly for those of you who are looking for a good read. It was funny, thrilling, romantic, had great characters. It was a fast paced read. Hardly any slow sections at all. Good Stuff. I will continue reading Julie Garwood. I personally love a good book with strong characters and a good solid storyline that I can follow. You won't be disappointed.

  • Romance by Vomit
    By A5HVPX1ETWWIV on 2001-10-01
As a mystery writer with my debut novel in its initial release, I admire the amazing quality of Julie Garwood's MERCY. It is a clever work of romantic mystery. A federal prosecutor first meets a gorgeous doctor when he vomits on her ball gown at a New Orleans gala. Within hours, she saves his life with an emergency appendectomy. He returns home, successfully brings down an organized crime mob, and begins receiving death threats. He, obessed with his lifesaving doctor, decides to hide in her hometown. Not all is well there, yet their romance blossoms as they take on the town's problems. MERCY is an excellent romantic mystery/mysterious romance. I recommend it highly.

  • No Mercy
    By on 2001-11-30
I have to agree with KBrowning on this one. I fell in love with Julie Garwood when I read ONE PINK ROSE. When she's writing historicals, she's fantastic but with each of her contemporaries, she falls way short. Because it was Julie, I wanted to give her a chance but struggled to get through the first 3 chapters, hoping she'd redeem herself, but I couldn't stomach it. The premis of the story pulls the reader in, but that's all I can say that's good about this book. I wish she'd go back to writing the historicals and stay away from the suspense. If you haven't yet, don't waste your money on the hardcover. Do what I did and borrow it from the library.

  • Very Disappointed
    By A2W1F6ILRJTB9U on 2002-05-31
I am a big fan of Julie Garwood's historical romances and I was looking forward to reading her contemporary romance 'Mercy'. I was very disappointed. I listened to the audio book and it didn't hold my interest in the least. There isn't anything good I can say about this book. The book is simple minded with a repetitive theme which doesn't develop to hold the readers interest.

  • Garwood Cashes In
    By on 2002-08-23
Like many of her more successful predecessors, Julie Garwood is beginning to rest a little too heavily on her laurels - and the marketing skills of her publishing company.
Okay, we've never been talking Faulkner, here; but Ms Garwood could always be depended upon to deliver reasonably well written, funny, and sometimes touching, romantic fiction to those of us who wanted a bit of intelligence with our escapism. This book, like its contemporary predecessor, reads as if she wrote it while balancing her checkbook. Little humor, little character development, little fun.
Ms. Garwood, go back to your roots, take your time with your writing, and quit anticipating your advance checks. With the lousy product that you've been producing recently, they may dry up sooner than you anticipate.

  • Terrific Romantic Suspense
    By A17XW1EB8DF217 on 2001-09-15
Following in the footsteps of HEARTBREAKER, Ms. Garwood's previous novel of romance and suspense, MERCY pits Theo Buchanan against an unknown evil threatening the life of the beautiful Michelle.

Dr. Michelle Renard encounters Theo first at a party in New Orleans where she meets him and subsequently saves his life when she operates to remove his appendix. Michelle enchants Boston-based Justice Department attorney, Theo Buchanan, when he sees her after his surgery. After her father invites him to go fishing in Bowen, Louisiana, Theo travels there only to discover that Michelle's clinic has been ransacked.

Enter the subplot-members of the sinister Sowing Club, John, Dallas, Preston, and Cameron, friends forever who amassed a large fortune in shady investment deals. When they become involved in "mercy" killing, the four need to cover their tracks. Where are the documents that could destroy them?

In an intricate plot twist, Michelle becomes the target as the four are given reason to believe that she is the recipient of some documents that could be particularly damaging to them. Can Theo protect her as their two lives become inextricably combined?

Ms. Garwood has proven once-again that she has successfully made the crossover from historicals to romantic suspense. The motivation of the Sowing Club becomes increasingly evil as the members lose all notions of morality and will go to any lengths for greed. The scenes are fast-paced, the characters colorful and enigmatic as Michelle and Theo encounter the many dangers of the bayou. For a sure-fire winner, MERCY can't be beat.

  • Mercy is classic Julie garwood
    By A1X2B7H1P11DXH on 2001-10-05
I love all of Julie Garwood's historicals, and I have to admit when she switched on us to comtemp's I had my doubts. They are all settled now. Julie has gone back to her classic style, with a quirky, spunky lovable heroine, and a hero who is alpha while at the same time isn't ashamed to show his love for the heroine. I think one of the things that I love best about Julie Garwood is the interaction between hero and heroine make you feel like you're there, and you know them inside and out. She does a tremendous job of that with Mercy--I fell in love! This book had LOL moments, sweet moments, and a great plot. I read it in one sitting, and am going to buy the audio CD to listen to it and see if I enjoy it as much in audio as I did in print. If you're a Julie Garwood fan, jump for joy! She's back!

  • A mercifully entertaining read
    By A1IO3LVYV5ZMK8 on 2002-08-05
Catherine Bondue's death was staged as an ostensible suicide but her husband John knew better. He manipulated his friends in his self-formed crime organization The Sowing Club to concoct a murder scheme by hoodwinking them into thinking that it was more of a mercy killing to end her sufferings by a debilitating disease. Little did he expect his wife to outsmart him by gathering his sordid evidence and send them to her niece Dr. Michelle "Mike" Renard. The nefarious felons soon invade Michelle's life so it is thus fortunate that Theo Buchanan from the Justice Dept. fatefully enters her life when Michelle rescues him after he fainted on her in a gala at New Orleans. The lean, hard pulsating thriller from second-timer Julie Garwood is fraught with fast twists, back-stabbings and deceptions that climaxes with a showdown at the hospital. The romance between the intelligent Michelle and chivalrous Theo adds on to the palpable tension instead of slowing down the frenetic pacing of pursuits and evil sabotages. Interweaving the small-town Louisians backdrop and charming interactions with the thriving community, the book crackles with humour, warmth and fraternity. This contemporary romance fuses cutthroat suspense to render it a mercifully entertaining read that will have Garwood's fans cheering.

  • God, No, Not Another One!
    By A6BBR19SSNS4K on 2005-10-22
Julie Garwood and her amazing quest for money bring you yet another piece of tripe.

Proving she too can be a one-dimensional writer and sucker you into buying her modern suspense novels because you love her historicals, she brings you book two of her "paint by the numbers" style.

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you her formula:

A virginal woman with more boobs than brains is stalked by a madman and must be protected by a knight in shining armor.

Our virgin: nagging surgeon Dr. Michelle "Mike" Renard who lives in the remote bayou outside New Orleans.

Our Knight: Theo Buchanon, the previous novel's hero's brother, and strangely not a cop but a federal lawyer (with a gun?) and the attitude of a burned out cop.

Our Madman: an unknown, presumably tied to a crime syndicate that for some bizarre reason wants to work out her tiny town of Bowen, personified by hired killers including "Monk".

In a bizarre twist to the plot Theo goes undercover as the football coach at the high school. He has more personality than Nick (of "the Heartbreaker") but is still about as personable as a pregnant crocodile.

Mike has a little bit more sense than Garwood's usual heroine; say the IQ of a seventh grader as opposed to a second grader, and about as much common sense.

There's less focus on the evil bad guys, only starting to build up the Monk as he will be villain of book three, the focus is all on hokey dialogue between Mike and Theo.

The sexual tension is there but frankly the mystery surrounding Mike's survivalist brother is the most interesting part of the book, far outshining it. The sex is about as arousing as "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer".

Stick to her historical novels. I believe this plot was brilliantly written in "Honor's Splendor" plot point for plot point, but it works better because the characters have the morals and intelligence of dark age dwellers, where "honor" takes place.

  • I enjoyed this book very much
    By A3P278XXVTJ9OX on 2006-03-18
After reading Heartbreaker, I quickly rushed out to find more Julie Garwood books. When I saw that Mercy's main character was the brother of the lead in Heartbreaker I was quickly interested.

Since this author uses the first few chapters to give a little insight into the characters and the lead in to the main plot, it does take a few chapters to really get into the story. Once you know what's going on though, it will keep you interested until the very end. The little bits of humor this author throws in and the heartfelt compassion make for entertaining reading and keep you connected to the characters.

This contemporary romance was well written and although you know the villians from the beginning, the author still manages to throw in a few surprises. Even the very last line in the book is a clever little twist to the ending.

    Is it worth buying? Absolutely.

  • Clever premise gone wrong
    By on 2001-09-19
The Sowing Club idea is clever, but the romance between "Mike" and Theo was lame and lacked Garwood's trademark chemistry. It was almost like she was writing two different stories and they were just bound into one book. Frankly, I've found myself skimming this author's contemporary novels and will be hard pressed to spend money on another one.

  • Thrilling and Fulfilling!
    By on 2001-09-25
In this, the second book in the Buchanan series, Ms. Garwood introduces us to several wonderful characters. Jake, Cherry and Darryl and the other "down home and open hearted" people of Bowen, Louisiana, along with Michelle and Theo (Nicks brother - The Heartbreaker). You enjoy the openness of these people, their pride and sense of family and moral values. You gain a respect for the average "working man or woman" and the extent they go to to take care of their own. It was a wonderful book. You got lost in the intrigue of figuring out the next step for the bad guys and in waiting for the next sensual touch by the good guy. Then she slips in a twist at the end that totally knocks you for a loop. :-) I loved it!

  • Mercy
    By A3KQTUMQPMH6I7 on 2001-10-04
Mercy, an absolutely wonderful story. It entertained with humor, romance, suspense and sheer "who done it?". The story of Michelle and Theo kept me going. Could not put it down. Definitely want to learn more about Noah and John Paul and Theo's yonger brothers and sisters.

Thank you Ms. Garwood for sharing your talent with us!!

  • Disappointed!
    By AHLL1H0IUIESZ on 2001-10-18
After reading all the rave reviews for this book, I decided to try my first Julie Garwood novel. The storyline looked interesting but to my disappointment I found many holes in this novel along with characters and dialogue a bit too juvenile for my taste. The romance portion of the story was lukewarm and dull and in my opinion not steamy enough. The suspense portion was bland. It took me three weeks to get through this book. This novel is a very "light" read, the type found in paperbacks. I had expected a more substantial and interesting read.

  • Not her best
    By on 2001-11-29
I have been a Julie Garwood fan ever since I read 'The Gift'. After that I bought all of her books. I especially liked the medieval ones (The Bride, The Prize). Heartbreaker was a good book, I really liked it. But MERCY is a bit disappointing. It is still quite good, but not for me. I do not think I will buy a contemporary of Ms. Garwood in hardcover again. Sorry....

  • Mercy (Julie GarwoodO
    By A1PI8ON93EGVWN on 2001-12-04
I have been a fan of Julie Garwood for years and have thoroughly enjoyed all her previous books. Her past books have had plots and characters that kept you reading until you finished the book. Mercy lacked the usual Garwood flair and was a "ho-hum" book. Will probably not buy another.

  • not finished
    By on 2002-08-22
I am not finished but so far I like the book. It is a refreshing relief from all of those other romance novels that have nothing but sex and no story line. I like a good romance story than seedy sex scenes. Maybe other writers should take a lesson from her.

  • A Brilliant Romance/Mystery and follow-up to Heartbreaker!!!
    By A106E1N0ZQ4D9W on 2001-09-24
This is the follow-up to Garwood's masterpeice 'Heartbreaker' that was released last year and I must say I am impressed! This was just as good as the first, perhaps even better! Nick's(from Heartbreaker) brother Theo is attending a conference in New Orleans when he suddenly becomes ill and throws up on a woman who happens to be a doctor. Doctor Michelle Renard, or Mike, as her family calls her is attending a conference when she sees an ill man doubled over by the elevator doors obviously in pain. When she goes to help him, he vomits on her new dress and passes out. Next thing Theo knows is that he is in an operating room with the beautiful woman who had tried to help him by the elevator. Michelle had found Theo in time, his appendix was about to burst. The two are thrown together by a twist of Fate, because Theo is a Federal Attorney and he is being threatened by mob associates and is hiding until the case dies down. He finds himself in the deep swamps of Louisiana in a little known town called Bowen, where the woman who had operated on him happens to work. A crooked group of men calling themselves 'The Sowing Club' and their horrible secret finds its way from the luxurious streets of New Orleans to the poor swamps of Bowen. Now they are after Michelle and Theo. Michelle's normally boring life is being turned upside down as FBI and police try to unravel the secret before someone is killed.
The chemistry is great between Theo and Michelle and the scenes with Noah Clayborne (from Heartbreaker) are fantastic! Its a fast paced story that keeps you wondering how the Sowing Club will work and how corrupt they can be. I am not usually a fan of corruption and political gain type stories, but this one was unbelieveable! It should be on the big screen! The love that Theo and Michelle find was magical and all I can say is WOW! Julie Garwood has sure made a niche for herself in the mystery/romance dept. Julie Garwood is one of my favorite authors. She has never disappointed me with any of her books and 'Mercy" is no different.

A real page turner. Set in New Orleans where a Mercy killing is taking place.

The plot is suspenseful and quite intriguing. The characters are easy to relate to and very entertaining.

    I recommend this book highly.
