even realism can too far By AZJHC5MQQHJES on 2000-08-28
As a junior high school English teacher, I am always on the lookout for a good YA novel to teach to my students or to recommend that they read individually. When I heard of Tears of a Tiger, I had high hopes that it would be everything that I look for in a YA novel. First of all, I liked the fact that the main characters were African-American. I teach a large portion of African-American students, and I have a lot of trouble finding a YA novel in which African-Americans are the central characters (are you listening, YA authors?). Second, I absolutely loved the differing points of view style that the book is written in. The way that the characters are developed through conversation, letters, poems, essays, and so on is one of the best that I have read. This is a great teaching tool alone, not to mention a super way of telling the story. Third, the event that is the catalyst for the plot, the underage drinking and driving, is realistic and teaches a great lesson to teenagers. Given my glowing praise, you may wonder, why not five stars? The simple fact is that Andy's suicide destroyed the book for me. The whole plot of the book seemed to be leading to Andy's coming to grips with the death of his friend. I was thinking: what a great way to show kids that there are other alternatives than killing oneself to work through problems. Then, the suicide note and he is dead. This is not a good message to send to youth. While a mature young adult can read and understand this book the way that the author probably meant it to be read, this is not a YA book for the masses. In good conscience, I cannot teach a book to kids who have enough disturbing messages thrown at them from all sources on a daily basis as it is. They do not need to read a book in which the main character, a young man much like many of them, cannot cope with his mistakes and kills himself. Would I still teach Antigone and Macbeth, you may wonder? Yes, I would; the characters who commit suicide in many classic works of literature bear little or no resemblance to the teenagers of today. Andy, on the other hand, is too much like many of the teenagers that I run into on a daily basis. Our children need to be taught the real truth--that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
A dramatic story of a boy who takes life the wrong way. By on 1999-06-09
Tears of a Tiger Book Review Happy-go-lucky teenage boys, play basketball and party; figure out how fast all that can change. Andrew(also known as Andy) Jackson, a basketball player who has his license, and his girlfriend Keisha, have been going steady for a few months. Andy's friends Robbie Washington, B.J. Carson, and Tyrone Mills, all go to the Hazelwood High School together, and have been friends for years. Robbie, Tyrone and Andy are party animals, while B.J. is more down-to-earth and passive. One night the boys decide to get a six-pack and have one of their usual "late-night rituals" together. Andy is the driver and has been drinking, and Robbie has his feet up, dangerously on the dashboard. Carelessly drunk and still driving, the boys head out on the highway, where later they hit a wall and helplessly watch Robbie burn to death in the car. There was nothing the boys could do to get him out of the car, but Andy still blames himself, because he was driving. Andy goes deeper, and deeper into depression, and loses his girlfriend Keisha through his anger and crying. He even sees a counselor, and his friends think he is fine. All that smile and charm is hidden behind a crying mask, and his friends can't reach out to help him. But even a counselor couldn't help his friends through the tragedy they were going to face....in the future. Sharon M. Draper has put together many books like this one, to help young adults through problems that they will face, in their teen years. The book, she hopes, will teach young readers to deal with their problems and to stay away from drugs, alcohol, and suicide. This book is a mix of drama, action, and slight horror. The book was worth the reading, and if you like books that make you cry, you can guarantee this one! It was put together in a conversational form, which was difficult to follow in the beginning, but you will catch up soon, and it just gets better and better. If you ever come across this book, be sure to read it; it may change your life.
Jay Horne's Review on Tears of a Tiger By A37ICJPWT1WFRI on 2000-02-13
Tears of a Tiger is a book about a 17 -year-old boy named Andy, who is having a lot of trouble getting over the death of his best friend,Rob. After winning big at a school basketball game, they choose to celebrate it the wrong way, drinking and driving. Andy's friends, who were also involved in the accident, tried to help Andy cope with this devestating, unfortunate accident. Though as time rolls on,Andy is secretly taking the incident harder than anyone could imagine. Things really start to turn sour when Andy's girlfriend,Kiesha, breakes up with him. As far as Andy is concerned,Kiesha is the only person that he could really turn to. So you could problably speculate how Andy felt when that happened. I did not enjoy this book in some ways.I am mainly speaking of the fact that nearly everything had a downside. That really makes you think though, because when you look at life, you see that there is a flaw in everything. That is what makes this book really have alot of the reality in it. Even though, for the most part, I really did enjoy this book, and recommend it for anyone who likes books that have alot of reality hooked up in them. Because,if you really think about it,anyone could end up in the position that Andy, his friends, his family, and his school wre placed in. I would definately rate this book five stars, for the way that it touches your heart, and the way it tells everyone who reads it,to never,in any situation drink and drive. Not only are you mentally unstable, but you can cause so many others so much pain in one solitary split second.
What I've Been Saying All Along By A2C5VLIJMDPWHI on 2006-06-01
When publishing my own book, I heard repeatedly that young African-Americans do not read but I think that's a lie. If more books came out that they could relate to, especially for boys, then the percentage of readers would change.
When I initially got this book, I looked at how it was written and became concerned about the style. Everything is all dialogue--and as much as I like dialogue, I thought maybe the author was pushing it too much. Wrong! I realized quickly that if the dialogue is informative enough, it will make a reader feel like they're being told the story in a conversational manner...and in a different manner at that.
This book was outstanding. I love realistic views of how teenagers REALLY act, feel, talk, and relate to other peers. Ofcourse not every teenager runs into a drunk driving issue, a suicidal peer, or parent abandonment...but even those who don't can probably relate to this book. Draper did not ONLY concentrate on a boy's feelings after his friend died in his car, but also on the relationship between young lovers, parenthood, a teacher/coach relationship with his/her students, and how peer pressure affects students in general. I am so impressed and definitely glad that Amazon.com recommended this book to me. Great job, Sharon! Absolutely great job!
The best book ever By A1YDUJ9SPIQUAG on 2004-07-05
Sharon M. Draper's Tears of a Tiger is the story of an unraveling black teenager who goes through a lot of pain, stress, and trauma. Sharon M. Draper writes in such a way that her literature literally brings tears to your eyes. This book describes bonds between friendship and love in a spectacular way. Tears of a Tiger presents the readers with lessons about drunk-driving and love. 17-year-old Andy Jackson discovers a world of depression when he and three other friends live a fatal car-accident. Andy, Rob, Tyrone and B.J. are four friends who celebrate after success in a high-school basketball game. All except B.J. drink during their ride on the car, even the driver, Andy. The likely conclusion that would occur happened, Andy crashed the car. All survived but Rob. After Rob's death, Andy starts to go into a world of his own where he faces a lot of problems. He feels that Rob's death was his fault because he caused the car to crash. Without Andy, Rob wouldn't have been dead. That's not Andy's only problem. Andy's been having a lot of problems with his girlfriend. Andy's girlfriend, Keisha doesn't seem to like the fact that Andy has been in his own world. Lately she has noticed that Andy ignores her and starts being more and more of a pain. After they break up something terrible happens. If you read the book you'll find out. This book was written in such a way that it was hard to put down. The author's style made you want to keep on reading. Each chapter was very unique. There were chapters that were newspaper articles and also phone conversations. By reading this book, I thought the author was a very creative person. Tears of a Tiger is one of those books that the reader can generate a lot of thought. This book is filled with connection to the real world. This book shows the reader the consequences of drunk driving. Many teens can relate to this book, and that's what makes this book fun to read. All and all, this was a very satisfying book. One downside may be that the author uses too much dialogue, other than that it's perfect. I would definitely recommend this book to adults and young adults. The ending left me hanging and wondering a lot about what was going on in Andy's head. I was thinking about all those people whose lives were ruined by drunk-drinking. This book left me thinking about how well the author constructed the narrative and how the situation was so realistic. This is one of those books which a reader can not put down because of its superior quality.

Tears of a Tiger is about a young boy named Andy and how one car accident changed his whole life, In this book it talks about how Andy is drunk driving and one of his friends in the car is killed. Throughout this book it tells about some of the many strong emotions that occur. I thought that this book was very well understood for my age level. I think that this book could change many lives! Tears of a Tiger tells a lot about the life of teenagers and what they are feeling after dealing with the death of their best friend. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about realistic issues that could happen everyday.

Tears of a Tiger is about a boy name Andy whose best friend died in a vehicular homicide accident, and he is still blaming himself for it. I like this book because it was full of exciting events and touching moments. My favorite person is Andy because he deals with a lot, and still tries to play it off. This book is not written like a regular book, it has homework assigament and all types of essays and police reports. Kids who like to read about real life events, I would recommend this book to you espicially teenagers who drink and drive. It might make you think the next time before you take a drink. I am a student in the 8th grade, and don't drink, ( YES! ).

I am a teacher who is constantly looking for something "fresh" to give my students. My students are typically low, reluctant readers. This is one of the only books that several of them said "I actually read and enjoyed this book. Give us more of this!"

Tears of a Tiger is about a boy named Andy and some of his highschool friends,Gerald, Tyrone, and B.J. The story focuses on the way in which the boys attempt to deal with a fatal car accident in which they lost their best friend Robbie. Andy and Robbie played on the basketball team together. One night after they had successfully beaten their opponents, they decided to get drunk and go drive around to celebrate their victory. Everyone, except for Gerald, who did not go with them, and B.J., had been drinking. Andy was driving the car when, suddenly, they crashed into a wall. Andy, Tyrone, and B.J. got out of the car just in ti,e before the car burst into flames. Unfortunately Robbie was trapped inside. Andy blamed himself entirely for Robbie's death, and so did his friends. However, they were having to face at this point in time was nothing compared to what was soon to come. I think Tears of a Tiger is a great book. It deals with so many issues that young people have to deal with. Sharon Draper is a great author. The unique style in which she writes makes this story easy for young people to understand. Irecommend Tears of a Tiger to people of all ages.
- A teen cries out
     By A2I96JX8QFEJGP on 2003-06-25
Tears of a Tiger is an excellent book written by Sharon Draper. I have read Forged by Fire, another book in this trilogy, and it is excellent as well. In this book, Andy Jackson is out one night with three of his friends. They decide to drink and drive. Andy is driving and runs into a wall. He and the two friends in the back seat escape, but their best friend Rob isn't so lucky. The book shows how this accident changes Andy's life forever. His friends, counselors, and teachers try to help, but he just can't get over the pain and guilt. Sharon Draper doesn't sugar coat the seriousness of this topic and is very direct in her writing. The book is written using journals, homework assignments, letters, and chapters to see feelings expressed by all the characters in the book. It is great for high school students, because it is easy to read and it may deal with an issue they are going through. I also think teachers would benefit from reading it, to see what signs to look for in a depressed teen and how to help them. I really enjoyed this book.

I read this book within a week. I thought it was very well written, along with a wonderful moral for young adults. In parts i was crying, while others I was laughing. I could relate to each and every one of these characters in my own life.

Tears of a Tiger is about a boy named Andy that is convicted of a vehicular homicide. He blames himself for this because of the fatal accident that killed his best friend, Rob. Unfortunately, he is unable to cope with this incident. Andy experienced what to us might be our worse nightmare, the devasting truth, our world's reality, or just scary and horrifying. Andy and his friends were unable to rescue their friend, Rob from the accident. "We were all screaming because we could see Rob's feet sticking through the windsheild." "We couldn't get him out!" The last thing I heard Rob say was,"Andy! Andy! Help me-Help me- Oh God, please don't let me die like this! Andy!" I really loved this book and I recommend it to tennagers everywhere. The reason why I recommend it to them is because Tears of the Tiger reaches out to your heart and takes hold of it in many ways! It is a very powerful and traumatic book, and they would love it alot.

The book Tears of Tiger is about a boy named Andy, who's just been in a car accident. He killed his best friend named Robert Washington. Now he knows what is feels like to be alone. My favorite character is Andy Jackson, one of the great basketball players, because nobody could understand his pain, and the fact that he killed his best friend Robert Washington. For example, everyday, though Andy was hurting, he hid it from his parents, friends, family, teachers, and the psychologist. I think it was a lot for a teen to experience a fatal car crash. I liked this book because of the slang language. It tells no matter what age you are death is going to come even to teens. I liked it also because of the basketball games, because I play basketball for the school myself, and the newspaper articles. I would recommend this book to people who likes slang language and to people who liks to play basketball.

Tears of a tiger ia an awesome book about life and, how precious it can be, if you really care my favorite character is Robbie, because he had a lot going for himself, but I didn't like when he started drinking. And the driver hit the wall and Robbie died. Now Andy can't get over the grief. I really learned from this book that I should like myself more, friends can help no matter what. And especially not to drink and drive. I liked this book alot, and also highly recommend this book to others. Tammy, WJHS,Salem Ala

This book is very good.It is also very sad because two people die and they are best friends and their other friends don't know what to do with all of this happening.Keshia probably thinks Andy killed himself because of her and him breaking up and Rob's death. The break was not her fault thought so she can't put herself threw all that.Like Andy did about Rob's death he thought it was his fault because he was driving drunk.Well I really encourage you to read this book, but be prepared to cry.

Tears of a Tiger teaches us about what can happen when you drink and drive. In this book a boy named Andy looses his best friend in a car accident when they had been drinking. Throughout the book he is very depressed and has a hard time putting the accident behind him. I would recommend this book because it is very dramatic and teaches us a lesson that we should read and learn instead of live and learn.
- Great Story! A must read! (Ready to write a screenplay!)
     By A2M50PMZHZHQ7N on 1999-10-03
I want to start by saying that I seriously feel that this would make a great feature film! Seriously, I'm ready to write a screenplay for it right this minute! You may have seen my review from "Forged by Fire" and I have to say that both books were great! The end of the book left a lump in my throat but, if you come across this review be4 you read the book, don't read the others! They give away a place in the book which really suprized me and will suprize you if you don't hear about it already. After you read this one, I seriously recommend reading the companion "Forged By Fire". It will probably answer the question of why Gerald wrote such a hateful letter to Andy. I don't recommend reading "Forged By Fire" be4 reading "Tears of a Tiger" because from reading it myself I was looking into hearing more about Gerald but did'nt and got a little dissapointed in the beginning of the book. In all, both books are a must read and afterwards we'll all see that "..It's ok to put dragons in a jungle and tears on a tiger."

     By on 2002-03-28
Paint-by-numbers prose with some sophomoric stylistic elements: letters in different fonts, changes in point of view. The racism is especially foolishly written. Save your time and your money: this "novel" is an embarrassment.
- My review
     By on 2002-10-08
This book is basically about a group of friends who are, by their own actions, put into surcumstances they would have rather not had happen. They drink and drive and their friend gets killed. One of the friends, the driver, is particularly effected by these happenings. The book tells of his struggle to cope with the loss of his best friend and deal with his friends and family after such a tragedy. The book was uniquely set up and an interesting, fast read. The writing and word usage isn't top of the line, but the author manages to bring emotion into the story. Like I said though, the author is no Shakespeare, or even close. It is not necessarily an intellegent book and in most cases, in my opinion at least, would only appeal to kids of middle and high school age. The story line is pretty generic. Over all, only pretty good, but is a little interesting and, unless you are really busy, worth a read. I give it 3 stars.

The main character of this book was Andy Jackson. After they won their Basketball game a few of the team went out got drunk and got in an accident and Robert Washington, the Captain, was a passanger in the front seat while Andy was driving.Robert died and Andy took it hard and he also took all the blame for Rob's death. I tried to read many books until I found this one. It was great. It had me in suspense everyday I read it. It was real realistic because I can relate to Andy a little bit. I also enjoyed the action and the Basketball part of it. It was even emotional in some parts of the book. I was really not hoping it to end like it did but what can we do. If you dont like to read you should start on this book.

I believe the book "Tears of a Tiger", by Sharon M. Draper was interesting to read because it teaches you how to deal with guilt if you are going through it.
This book is about a young man dealing with guilt and depression after a drinking and driving accident him and his friends were in killing his bestfriend.
"Tears of a Tiger" is a good book for teenagers both male and females because if they are going through something like this, then this would help them get through it.
- I think I'm the only one who feels this way
     By AYWX17Q373VPL on 2005-07-19
I think I am the only person who doesn't like this book! In fact, I hated it. I am a pre-service teacher and I had to read it for a class. I felt that the main problem with the book is the dialogue. For a book that is written almost strictly in dialogue, it sounded nothing like real-life teenagers. I understand that many YA authors do not want to include vulgarity in their work, but substituting words like "mess" and "crap" make it sound like a bad afterschool movie. I would rather her print a line or dashes in place of the vulgarity. Even without the phoney sounding slang, the dialogue had no natural rhythm to it. Even the adults sounded like cardboard cutouts. Second, I do not belive that the reaction of Andy was realistic. Now, I'm sure that there are many people who have had a person in their life commit suicide and have it completely catch them off-guard. That's usually what happens. However, in hindsight most people can see some signs and symptoms. However, all the signs that Andy gave were that he was improving. He was talking freely and honestly with his therapist enough that the sessions were suspended. His moodiness was continuing but not necessarily worsening. I felt that the suicide was a last minute decision by the author and was not backed up with evidence in the narrative. I would not use this in my classroom. I'm sure that there are many who love the book and find it wonderful, however I cannot see enough redeeming qualities in it to use it in my classroom.

This book, Tears of a Tiger, was published in 1994 by Simon Pulse. There are 180 pages in Tears of a Tiger. I think that this book is for grades 9th and up, because it has a grown up plot and it's for teenagers. This book is fiction. It is about these boys who are friends and play basketball on their high school team. One of the boy dies and his best friend says it's his fault. The main characters are Andy, Gerald, Rob, Kesisha, BJ, Tyrone, Rhonda, Monty, and Dr.Carrothers. I would have to give this book 5 stars. The first time I saw this book I thought it looked like it would be a dumb book! But then, all my friends said it was good and they all read it. So, I said, " what the heck-I'll read it." So I read it and I loved it. Now I'm reading the next book in the series Forged by Fire. I really like this one, too.
This book Tears of a Tiger is a story about Rob and Andy. Rob died in a car crash one night after a basketball game that their team won. They were celebrating and Andy was drinking and driving. He wrecked in his car and killed Rob. Now, Andy is blaming himself for the whole thing. Andy is the saddest because he was driving the car when his best friend was killed. The rest of the book is about everyone trying to help Andy overcome this death. His parents send him to a psychologist. All the other kids except Andy find a way to deal with Rob's death . Will Andy ever get over this experience or will it take over his whole life? Read this book to find out!

Sharon Draper has written a fast-paced book that will keep you reading until the last page of the 3rd book of the trilogy, DARKNESS BEFORE DAWN.
One of my favorite things about the author is the way she creates dialogue. She writes it like people say it.
To really UNDERSTAND her dialogue, you must say it out loud in your head and it comes alive!
This book is especially good for High School students.

The book is about a boy name Andy Jackson who is on a basketball team. Then one night he has just won a big game so him and his friends decided they should celebrate. Andy and his friends started drinking and Andy got behind the wheel and he ended up killing his best friend and the captain of the basketball team Robbie. Ever since the death of Rob Andy hasn't been the same. So one day he couldn't get enough of the guilt and decided to take his life.
Sharon M. Draper is the greatest well-known writer that I know. I love his style of writing and how she brings her characters to live.
- Drinking Causes Death
     By AU6DIIDZK2OQM on 2007-06-20
Andy is a high-school student and a good basketball player. His best friend Robbie is the star of the basketball team, and the two of them hang out with two other close friends, Tyrone and B.J. One night after a good game, they get into Andy's car. All except B.J. are drinking. On their way home, they get into a car accident and Robbie is killed, while the other three are barely injured. Andy isn't even charged with much of anything; he goes back to school like things are normal.
Inside, though, things are far from normal. Andy feels distant from everyone, and he is wracked with guilt. He continues to lean on his girlfriend, Keisha, and shares all of his depression with her. His parents have never been very close to him, and they aren't there for him now that he needs their support. None of his classmates or his teachers seem to be able to understand what he is going through. Andy often feels like he is drowning in sorrow and he can't let go of the accident.
I liked the idea of following a student through such a tragedy to see how he was affected by it. I also liked the different points of view in this story; they helped me to get a more well-rounded idea of what everyone in the story was thinking.
I thought that some of the parts of this story were very unrealistic. These were pretty savvy high school kids, yet they had old-fashioned ideas about sex and they never used swear words. I'm sure that was done to prevent the book from being censored out of high school libraries, but it made the characters seem less real. I also found it hard to believe tht teachers would be as prejudiced as the teachers in this school were.
- Fantastic Book

Tears of a Tiger is a story that deals with several issues that many young adults face today. It is a powerful story that tells about the price one pays for drinking and driving. In one horrific night, Andy Jackson's life is changed forever. This book does not sugar-coat any of the issues it presents. The story is told through newspaper articles, journal entries, homework assingments, letters, and conversations that bring the story to life. I think this book would be a great asset in any high school English class. I highly recommend it to all teachers and students at the high school level. I could not put the book down. It is a great model for different writing genres. This book would work well in units that deal with alcohol abuse, suicide, family relationships, and racism. This book would also be a wonderful model in a creative writing class. I feel anyone who reads it will enjoy it as much as I did. I gave this book 5 stars.

The book Tears of a Tiger is about the degeneration of a 17-year-old boy after he watches his best friend burn to death in a fatal car wreck. After a basketball game Andy Jackson, and a few of his good buddies, get behind the wheel drunk. After crashing into a retaining wall, the car bursts into flame, and Andy has to watch his best friend burn to death. After this, Andy falls into deep despair. For example, Andy describes his depression by saying, "My mind is cloudy , my heart is bloody, my soul is on ice. Nobody is home. Nobody cares. I wish I could go to sleep forever." This book helped me to see how depression can chanse your life. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who needs a powerful lesson on why not to drink and drive.

This book is about a boy, named Andy, who is trying to deal with the fact that his best friend was recently killed in a car accident, The worst part is that Andy was the driver. This book is very realistic! It is something that could really happen in my school, or even life. Tears of a Tiger is kind of scary. For example, Andy is always thinking about death. He thinks that nobody can help him, or even cares. He wonders things like if Rob is cold. The book is also written in a unique way. It is in the form of conversations, poetry, homework assignments, and letters. I think that the author was very creative. Tears of a Tiger will really touch your heart. I recomend it to people who like books with sad endings. I also recomend it to people who like books that teach a lesson.
