A beautiful edition of wonderful stories with glorious illustrations By AUHG8KSHI529U on 2007-07-21
This book is a treasure and every home should have a copy on their shelf. You will have children and grandchildren to read the stories to. And, for heaven's sake, you can read and enjoy them as an adult. These are children's stories, to be sure, but they are very charming, the language is pleasant and better than most of what is fobbed off as "children's literature" today. And the paintings and drawings are glorious.
These stories have been in print for a century because they are so special. The animals are fantasies, yes, but Beatrix Potter was also a keen observer of animals and nature. I love how, in Nutkin, she has the squirrels bring the owl different gifts of animals to eat in exchange for gathering nuts on his island. However, she has the squirrels building rafts and traveling over the water to the island! My granddaughter loved this story and laughed very hard at how silly Nutkin is.
This treasury also has a short note at the beginning of each story about its origins and the Miss Potter's life at the time it was created. Nutkin, for example, is based on the musings of an old lady who lived on the island and thought they squirrels came from all around when the nuts were ripe. She enjoyed thinking they came on little rafts. We also learn that "The Tailor of Gloucester" was her personal favorite among her stories, and it is easy to understand why.
The stories range from those with few words to some with many words and fewer drawings. None of them are tremendously long. Readers of all abilities can find something to tackle. In fact, those who can't read yet should be given the opportunity to "read" you the story they see in the pictures. What fun that is!
Another wonderful thing is how the characters make reappearances, but remain affected by what happened to them in a previous story. Peter Rabbit is never as rash as he was after his bare escape from Farmer McGregor in the first story.
Simply, I cannot praise the quality of this book enough and urge you to get a copy for yourself and your family. It is produced with quality and care and is protected by a very nice slipcase. These kinds of collections are usually called a treasury, but this one really is a treasure.
Worth the money! By AQM0BYKY6MKD5 on 2007-11-18
We purchased "Beatrix Potter - The Complete Tales" as a book to read to our grandchildren. We were not sure how little children raised on TV and video games would respond to the sweet, slow-moving tales written over a century ago. What we found was constant requests to "read another one, Grandpa," and "just one more." The little ones absolutely loved this book. The book is beautifully illustrated, beautifully bound, and protected in its box cover.
If you treasure good books, quality books, and wish to pass along these sweet stories to another generation rather than see them watching death and mayhem on the boob tube, we would highly recommend this book for your collection.
Beautiful Illustrations. Imaginative Stories... By A9VYPWQRVK726 on 2007-07-29
I bought this for my wife after we viewed the Miss Potter DVD. She loves it. We don't have children, but we read the tales to our Borzoi. She is in the Marin Humane Society SHARE program. As a therapy dog, Lara is eligible to enter the child reading program. In that program, children read to dogs if they have a learning problem. The dogs listen attentively, and there is no peer derision from other children.
The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter By ADKZEVGPUVY5O on 2007-05-17
This book is absolutely gorgeous! I am so happy with it. I got it for my little great-niece so she, too, can be enchanted by these wonderful tales and drawings.
Difficult to read By A106NX1X5DMAGS on 2007-06-26
I loved the tale of Peter Rabbit so I decided to get the collection of Beatrix Potter's "tales" for my 4 year old son. I've been trying to introduce books that are a bit longer and have different stories or chapters to encourage him to want to hear the next story (pre-reading skills). He often used to ask me to read an entire children's book which could be as long as 45 pages, which wouldn't help him when he was learning to read and I wouldn't want him to become frustrated. Many of the Beatrix Potter stories are a bit difficult to read aloud to a child since the language is more proper English rather than current day conversational English and consequently can be difficult to follow for a young child.
- Perfected Classic
     By A31OLOH27T0AFO on 2007-08-14
I bought this item for my mother because she was such a fan of the Peter Rabbit stories. However, inside this book was every single story of Potter's that was published including ones that never had a chance to be published before her death. Along with this are the original paintings she created for each story. My mother absolutely loves this and now reads it to my baby sister any chance she can. It is a must have for children's stories.
- Old favorites and new gems
     By A3GSRH1SQSARJA on 2007-10-29
This very affordable volume has all of the Potter titles including a few I had never seen before (some of them not published during the author's lifetime). The rabbit stories seem to get the attention when people speak of Potter's work. But for my money the mouse stories are the best: especially "The Tailor of Gloucester" and "The Tale of Johhny Town-Mouse." I hadn't remembered how much all of Beatrix Potter's tales seem to revolve around eating and being eaten. They are in that regard, as in others, an excellent reflection of th e real "lives" of the animals that she dresses and gives words to. The paintings are wonderfully reproduced here and, if the book is much too large and heavy for little hands, it is a very good size for setting on one's lap along with the child who wants a story.
- Bedtime reading turned into morningtime reading, too!
     By AMQ1F7G7ND5RA on 2007-08-25
I purchased this single book collection of Beatrix Potter stories because our oldest, aged four, loves Peter Rabbit. We had planned to read one story per evening before bed but the great writing style and pictures of Ms. Potter so grabbed our four year old's attention that we ended up reading one at bed, at rising in the morning and before nap time. Even my husband would drop what he was busy with to come and listen to storytime! The adventures and the names Ms Potter came up with are charming and fun to say. One does have to know some Engligh terms and be able to explain those vocabulary on the quick but it sure is fun to hear your child increase his vocabulary with the neighbor kids! We have certainly gotten a hoot out of the appropriate word usage he has picked up from these stories and then will explain to his friends to help "teach" them. We've read through this book many times to our delight.

You know I saw that movie Ms. Potter and learned all about Peter Rabbit and the other characters. I was so enchanted with the movie that I had to buy the book. It was very lovely to see them all bound in one beautiful book with a lovely book sleeve--- Very NICE!! This would make a wonderful gift for a new baby or a special Easter gift.
- Lovely Book

Every home should have this book to read to their children! Adults will love the quality and the beauty of the artwork.
- Beautiful but too bulky for real use
     By A30AOQU89547II on 2008-05-02
While this is a beautiful anthology, I find that my children never choose to read it or look at it themselves because it is simply too heavy and bulky for little hands. It's heavy to hold while laying down reading before bed, so I don't tend to pick it as a read-aloud either. The binding has also broken loose from the pages, caused by a very little girl trying to carry the book by the front cover! I've decided to break down and get the individual boxed set of stories so that we will actually read them!

I bought this for my son because he fell in love with Beatrix Potter as a small child when he visited my mother's house. This was a lovely reminder of those special times with his grandmother. It is a delightful tale with spectaular pictures that are now being shared with another generation as my son shares them with his children.
- Gorgeous, heirloom-quality book!
     By A6E3SGFDIQFS7 on 2008-04-23
Being an avid reader myself as a child, I thought it was so important to begin a collection of fantastic books for my baby. This was one of the first on my list, and I'm thrilled with the quality. The illustrations are stunning, as well as the weighty feel of each page and the nice, thick hardcover. Not highlighted in the description was the nifty hardback protective sheath that comes with the book--what a fabulous extra! I know it will be a book my daughter will treasure for many years to come and she will enjoy many bedtimes with this book. I especially liked that it was the complete tales, not just a few Beatrix Potter favorites--it was important to me that I get the "whole collection" of stories when buying a book like this. I'd recommend this book to anyone who values high-quality, heirloom books! You won't be disappointed.

Beautiful book! It contains all of the stories of hers that I was told a child.
Many people forget Jemina Puddle Duck and Johnny Townmouse are also characters in her stories besides Peter Rabbit.
The book is filled with beautiful pictures, making a perfect gift or the perfect book to curl up and reminisce with.

This is the complete collection of Beatrix Potter's books, with all of the original illustrations, in a beautifully bound slip-cased treasure of a volume! I can't express enough how thoroughly pleased we are with this book. It is very sturdy and yet beautiful and graces the bookshelf! In the format of the little books I'd seen before, many of the stories were not printed. It was good to become acquainted with the stories we weren't familiar with and read the ones we have always loved. And this wonderful volume will be a treasure for years and years to come, and I am sure read by my grandson's own children someday.
- Essential Beatrix Potter
     By A1KPMZ59Y7IJ3W on 2008-01-18
This is a great book containing all the works of Beatrix Potter. I think every home should have the complete works of Beatrix Potter, and this is a great way to get all the stories and illustrations in one volume. This is a lot less bulky than the complete works sets containing individual books. As far as I know, no illustrations have been left out. It comes in a nice slipcase and looks very elegant. I gave one to both of my children's grandmas for Christmas and they loved them.
- Wonderful!!!!!!!!!

I loooooooooooooove it - print size, case, colors - you want to touch every picture, and you get all of them. Perfect gift for perfect price.
- Perfect Gift for anyone!
     By A1GHQQH6TILS2G on 2008-05-12
When I first opened the box that contained this book, I very greedily sat and held the book to myself; this is mine I thought. I have never seen all of Miss Potter's work in one place, with all her illustrations so perfectly recreated and the background of Miss Potters life included with each story . The book is bound chronologically, and is so sweet. After I devoured the book I realized what a perfect nursery gift it would be, and took it to my favorite grandchild; she can learn to read and share the book with her younger siblings! How lovely is that!
- A must have book
     By A2SJAZZBJR2MHX on 2007-10-27
I have five children, and we love the world through Beatrix Potter's eyes.
After checking out each individual story numerous times, and even some of the DVDs, we finally broke down and bought the collection. We love the beautiful watercolor illustrations, and the British dialog and 19th century customs. I think my two particular favorite tales are The Fierce, Bad Rabbit, and the Pie and the Patty Pan. It was really hard to choose just two.
It's fun to sit down and just start reading from this collection of stories. In no time, we had read them all, and children were pushing to hear their favorite story first.
Every now and then, someone will quote one of the stories, saying something silly like, "someone's been digging up MY nuts," or "Gammon, ha-ha..." You really have to read the stories to know what we're talking about. It's a way to create a secret culture of inside jokes with your family.
This is definitely one of my 10 favorite children's books.

This is hours and hours of great reading and all for a fair price. It is so expensive to build a library for your children these days. This is a great way to get dozens of books as one.

I loved listening to the quirky reality of Beatrix Potter's world as a child and I know have a copy of Beatrix Potter Complete Tales R/I (Hardcover) which I read to my 5 y.o. boy and 3 y.o. girl who love every nuance. My personal favorit character is Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.

Beatrix Potter Complete Tales R/I
I ordered this book for my granddaughter's first birthday. It arrived sooner than promised, in perfect condition, complete with the gorgeous illustrations, by Potter, which graced the first printing. My conscious decision is to provide her with the basis of a fabulous library. To this end I have been purchasing the true classics of children's literature. This is just one of the books I have so far given her. Her mother, my daughter, is putting them aside until the child is old enough to handle them. By that time I hope to have supplied on the order of 50 beautiful classic hardbound books for her enjoyment.
A child who reads owns the world.
