Boynton is back! Joining Barnyard Dance! and Birthday Monsters!, here is Pajama Time! a good-night book with the irrepressible language, the inimitable illustrations, the irresistible cast of characters only Sandra Boynton could create.

A jump-roping chicken and a pig on a swing. A Scottie in plaid pajamas and an elephant in a fuzzy one-piece with feet. And in sing-along nuttiness reminiscent of Barnyard Dance!, it's time to head to bed-to the beat: Pajammy to the left. Pajammy to the right. Jamma jamma jamma jamma P!J! Everybody's wearing them for dancing tonight. Jamma jamma jamma jamma P!J! UPC: 019628119759

  • A great addition to my son's bedtime routine

    By on 2000-12-31
Once you really get a feel for the rhythm of this book (it doesn't take long) you and your toddler will adore it. My 2 year old loves Boynton's board books best, and Pajama Time quickly surpassed Barnyard Dance as his absolute favorite book. We can calm him down any time by repeating the sing-songy words to Pajama Time. Since our son loves to take a bath but isn't always anxious to get out of the tub, we started chanting the words to Pajama Time as we reach for the towel. It calms him down and reminds him that his favorite book is coming up soon and is worth getting out of the tub for. Putting on his pajamas is less of a squirmfest, too, since having pajamas on is much more fun now.

As always, Boynton's illustrations are amusing and adorable. We particularly like the variety of pajamas shown on the animal characters. This book makes a great companion book to Boynton's Hey, Wake Up--the two together would make a wonderful gift.

    Highly recommended.

  • it's got a great beat & you can dance to it

    By A1SG73VR5R809B on 2004-05-04
Since he was 2 or 3 months old, my baby has loved to hear us chant this catchy rhyme. Keep a good, steady rhythm when you read it aloud, dance with it or pound the crib mattress to keep time, and it's magic. "Pajammy to the left! Pajammy to the right! Jamma jamma jamma jamma P!J!" seldom fails to get a baby grin. The pictures of happy dancing animals, like most of Boynton's illustrations, just radiate good feeling. This is too good to save for bedtime (in fact, it's so rousing, parents might prefer to use it earlier in the day).

  • Great for parents too

    By on 2001-01-07
When reading to my daughter, she usually insists that I read the same book repeatedly throughout the day. And we read so many books everyday. But this book is one I never get tired of reading. It's fun, and the reading to a musical beat is great. I guarantee that it will get any terrible two moment out the door in seconds. When my daughter or I are in a bad mood, we reach for this book and we start to smile right away. The charcters are adorable and my daughter is delighted to get her pajamas on when I sing the song on the way to her room. Thank You Sandra Boynton for another terrific book.

  • Book-crazy 2 year old's current fave!

    By on 2000-06-23
If you have to read a book over and over like I do to my 2 year old, this is THE book! We both love to sing and dance along with the animals and it has added an interesting twist to choosing her pjs each night. We have only had the book a few weeks, but she already has most of it memorized and reads along with me. My husband loves the book too and does a great rap song rendition which really cracks my daughter up. A lot of fun. I highly recommend.

  • Another Boyton Classic

    By on 2000-06-06
This is the third Boyton bedtime book I have including the Going to Bed Book and Snoozers. At first I thought it would be too similiar to the others but my children love it. This one has a nice rhythm to it and the text is hilarious. The illustrations are classic Boyton, but different enough to hold the interest of young children.

  • I LOVE THIS BOOK!
    By on 2001-05-02
Every night, my daughter [now 20 months] has me read at least 10 books; however there is no book I love better than reading this book. It is written in a sing song manner which makes it sheer fun!!! I could read this book 20 times and still love the experience. And best of all, my daughter and I have developed a whole routine around the book. This is a must have for your children's library.

  • Sandra should write books, not song lyrics
    By A3HFUUY5TZIV66 on 2003-04-04
A friend of mine once said that lyrics should be sung, not read. In this book, Boynton doesn't pull off the lyrics-as-story, in my opinion, like she does in "Barnyard Dance." The rhymes do not flow very well. Parentheses, while necessary on the inside of your favorite album sleeve to note lyrics usually sung by background singers, are annoying here. They don't flow very well, and are usually not read by me for this reason. The book just flows better if you don't read them.

It might have been better if she would have included a "Sung to the tune of..." at the beginning of her book. But she doesn't, so you're left to figure out your own melody. Which could be nice if you're into that sort of thing, but being a song writer, I can't follow her melody line.

My son likes it okay, but he doesn't bring it to me to read as much as "Doggies", "Going to Bed Book" or "Not the Hippopotamus."

If you like that song-reading style, I'd recommend "Barnyard Dance" over this one. The melody is simple, and you can even read it like that square dance song Bugs Bunny sings in that Loony Tunes cartoon with the two hillbillies ("Don't you curse and don't you swear, just come right out and form a square")

If you're looking for a bedtime book, you can't go wrong with "The Going to Bed Book."

  • Surprisinly good for a range of ages
    By A146H6A41B26QT on 2003-08-22
I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old nephew and was surprised to find out it is his seven year old sister's current favorite book! She likes to sing the words--try it--it's fun! Boynton is great for a child as soon as he or she "gets" the concept of being read to--and I'm still waiting to see when they start getting bored!

  • Pajammy here, pajammy there, jamma jamma everywhere...
    By A271N9LDB46SNZ on 2004-09-30
(OK, that's not actually a line from the book.)
I started reading this book to my son when he was just a few months old. He always smiled when I have read this to him, especially when we get to his favorite part of the book: "Pajammy to the left, pajammy to the right, jamma jamma jamma jamma PJ".
Whenever I am dressing him in his PJs, if he starts to fight and give me a hard time, I just have to start reciting the words to the book - which I've got memorized, because it's got such a great beat. By the time I get to the words "It's pajamma time", he smiles and is happy to "pull on the bottoms, and put on the top". He knows that after he gets his PJs on, we are ready to dance.
This book is a must have!

  • My son's favorite Boynton!
    By A3L2506W8QLD2Y on 2004-08-27
I don't know what else I can add to the glowing reviews here, other than to say that this book is one of the few that gets my son in bed voluntarily. He cannot read yet but has it memorized, and it is one of the few books that has held his interest for going on 3 years now.

  • Dangerous for teethers!
    By A1QCNAIBPBYXI2 on 2005-05-25
We never got around to reading this book because my baby went right for mouthing it. A minute later I saw her face was covered in black specks of ink because the cover had started to disintegrate. The ink was really hard to get off and plenty was ingested. She mouths all of her board books and this has only happened with this one.

  • Fun and Fabulous at Bedtime
    By A3N5HM9O87F708 on 2005-11-17
We received this book on my daughters 1st birthday. She immediately loved it. We sing the book to her as this book easily lends itself to song. In the beginning we pointed to all of the different objects the text refers to: the moon, pink pajamas, blue pajamas and such. After a few readings, she is now pointing to the objects as we sing the book to her. She loves it, and it has made putting her down for bed such an ease. We sing the book two times and then it time for "night-night." This book is heartily recommended.

  • Just not up to the Boyton Standard
    By on 2001-07-23
Sorry to be negative, but this book just didn't rate with me. We have every other Boyton book (through Amazon, I might add), but this one had no substance. It contained none of the cleverness of the Going to Bed Book, the fun of Barnyard Dance, or educational elements of Hippos Go Berserk. Classics such as these undoubtedly set high expectations, but I found this one to be a brand extension one step too far. There are lots of other more worthy alternatives.

  • Fun for the entire family
    By ABXQHET6YBBMW on 2004-11-08
I bought this book for my 8 month old nephew for Christmas last year. At first he wasn't really interested in the book. But after his mom read it to him a few times, he really got into it. He loves to point at the colorful "jammies" that the animals are wearing in the book. He also loves the Pjammy to the left...Pjammy to the right....part. We read it like a cheer and he just laughs and giggles at us. I've found it's one of his favorite books. He brings it with him everywhere he goes because it keeps him entertained. I'm going to be sure to buy more books for him because they are all as entertaining as this one is.

  • A Wonderful Bed Time Book
    By A5S40MHKXE4Y6 on 2007-05-27
This book is fabulous for bedtime. My active toddler has a hard time winding down for bed, but when we read her this book she has an easier time at bedtime. The illustrations are hilarious and the rhymes are great. I even enjoy reading my children this book. Its really fun if you enjoy "getting into" the rhythm of the language. Sandra Boynton books are the BEST.

  • Not our favorite!
    By AJGBEEPRJUKQ7 on 2000-06-19
Another new Boynton title, but I found this one hard to read to my son. It seems like it should be set to music, and I guess I just don't know the tune. I'm sure we will see it pop up on a Boynton CD soon though. We have Barnyard Dance which is cute when sung, but I can't get into this one. I'll probably hide it from my son.

  • Current favorite of our 2-year old
    By on 2000-08-04
My parents brought this book for our 2-year old with them on a recent visit. She LOVES it - she had us reading it over and over again. My folks were here for 3 days and by the end of that time, my daughter had this book memorized and was "reading" it by herself. She has loads of fun saying "jama - jama - jama - PJ!"

  • Fun
    By A1EB6N85S3Q6FQ on 2000-10-15
This book is wonderful. My daughter who is not quite 2 loves it. You can sing it to "Shortnin Bread", make up your own tune, or just "rap" it. It's FUN!

  • She LOVES this book!
    By A31W73M8YTPKX on 2000-12-06
My eleven month old loves this book so much, she actually kisses it. The pages are stuck together from her very wet, drooly kisses. My 3 year old niece and 5 year old nephew also enjoy reading this book. It's a book that everyone enjoys!

  • Oooooo yes! It's pajama time!
    By A1R17ICSHKFJHH on 2003-01-16
This is our first Sandra Boynton book and a family favorite at our house! My 20 month old son brings it to me often to have read to him during the day, and it's part of our nightly routine as well. When it's late and he refuses to get out of the tub at night because he's having too much fun, we mention that it's time to read Pajama Time, and he practically jumps out by himself! I've read the book more times than I can imagine, but I'm not tired of hearing the rhythm of the words - my husband reads it with more of a rap sound, while I choose to use more of an upbeat cheer. The drawings are so cute! My son always points out the moon to us and I love that chicken lying on the ground pulling his pants on! We enjoy how the last page seems to quiet things down by using smaller and smaller type, implying that the words get quieter, and the use of the words "Hush, hush" and "shhhh".

It's a definite keeper although our copy is getting a little hashed. If I had any complaints, it would be the hole in the moon on the cover was way too tempting for my son - he's bent the little flap there so it doesn't look very nice anymore.

I'm considering buying multiple copies to give away as shower gifts, but I suppose it's more age appropriate for kids over the age of 1.

If this is any indication of the fun and excitement of Sandra Boynton's other books, we'll be expanding our collection!

  • The favorite book here
    By AZL0P9J95ON7D on 2003-03-15
My 18 mos old loves this book. I swear I read this to him at least 10 times a day. He carries it around with him and loves to look at the pictures. I have read this book so many times that I dont even need the book to recite the story, I have it memorized. The book has a pleasant rhyme to it that makes for a great little song. My son especially loves it when I sing it to him. He now walks around singing jamma jamma jamma PJ!!! and uses this to let me know it is once again to read pajama time. I cant praise this book enough, this book has my son loving stories read to him.

  • BEDTIME THE BOYNTON WAY
    By A2JP0URFHXP6DO on 2005-02-18
Sandra Boynton's books have become new favorites in our household with our 2 1/2 year old. We must have seven or eight of them now and everyone is read with regularity. Sandra's style of prose and illustration has a great appeal to toddlers with its silly, whimsical style. Pajama Time of course it all about getting your little ones in their PJs and off to bed. In typical Boynton style we see several happy-go-lucky animals playing outside as it gets dark and the moon rises. Time to come inside and get those PJs on!

The story is of course told in Sandra's signature rhyming style...take this line about pajamas:

    "Some are old
    and some are new.
    Some are red
    and some are blue"

Bright, bold colors are always choice attractions in Sandra's books and here we have pigs, hippos, cats, and more all getting ready for bed and dancing about before finally settling down for the night in bed. Even the text becomes smaller, indicating a softer tone to send your little one on to dreamland.

    Another winner from Sandra!

  • Goregeous books
    By A2EQXSQWEGEWBI on 2006-03-11
My daughter absolutely loves these books. Because they are so accurate with the pictures she can even know the words. They are bright and colourful as well.

  • Daughter's favorite book
    By A1VJIASIERUIIA on 2006-03-29
We read 3-4 books to our 2-year old each night before she goes to sleep and we always end the reading session with this one. She loves the way we sing through the book and even starts getting sleepy half way through. I loved it so much that I bought the others in the series, but this is our daugther's favorite!

  • Best Boynton Book
    By A9REEKTBGZ5W0 on 2006-09-01
We've checked out a number of Boynton books from our library, and Pajama Time is the first one my daughter has really loved. She just turned two, and she is always asking for "Jammie Time" to be read to her, especially when we are getting her ready for bed. I like how the book can be sung, which always brings a smile to my daughter's face. The pictures and words are silly and seem to be very appealing to toddlers.

  • A great piece of literature
    By A2WAP3D72BH75C on 2006-12-14
Boynton created a classic with 'Pajama Time!'. The story takes place at the end of a long day, with various animals getting ready for bed. All are hurrying to get their pajamas on for the great big Pajama-de-bop. This is an uplifting tale celebrating the fun of going to bed. A must read, and I have to say, one of Boynton's best works.

  • A family classic memory maker
    By A224ASDSDXTS3N on 2007-02-10
How many books can have your whole family dancing in a conga line to the bedrooms at bedtime. My kids both loved this book when they were small, and I purchased it again recently, since we gave away our original

  • My daughter ADORES this book!
    By A1T7UEZ5884U9I on 2000-12-12
We have purchased many of Sandra Boynton's adorable and rolicking books, but my 14 month old daugther loves "Pajama Time" the most! She carries this book EVERYWHERE with her and asks for me to read it again and again. She giggles and smiles. It is a great book for bed time or anytime. A must buy!

  • Gotta Love Boynton
    By A30H2335OM7RD6 on 2001-11-05
Every one of the Boynton books that we have my children love. My son (age 2) enjoys the repition and singy songy rythm to the words. My daughter (8 months) likes the pictures. I enjoy the fact that these are not books I get tired of reading three and four times a night.

Boynton books are wonderful and this one is a lot of fun. My son likes to take this one to bed with him and look at the pictures of the animals in pajamas. Very cute.

  • Favorite Book in our nightly routine!
    By on 2002-07-23
Pajama Time! is a wonderful story that my daughter looks forward to. The rhyme and rhythm of this story makes her giggle and bounce around. She loves the "Pajammy to the left, Pajammy to the right" part, and we move around to the beat as I read. This story will be a part of her bedtime routine for a long time. She started to enjoy the book at about 6 months and now she helps turn the pages as I read! When she is older, she will get more from the book, such as the different types of "jammy" characteristics! I would highly recommend this book. It is very easy to read these stories in an animated way to entertain your child!
