  • Great for everyone, not just kids.

    By on 2003-02-21
I was really suprised how many of these people I was not familiar with. I learned a lot! This book gives 2 pages of information on 50 important and influential people from the US (note: just from the US), explaining WHY we should think of them as heros. The heros quiz in the back is fun to do as a family. Everyone should read this book, not just children.

  • A Very Inspiring Book!

Dr. Dennis Denenberg and Lorraine Roscoe have written a book so inspiring and appropriate for children that this book should be in every classroom in the United States! Hard as if may be to believe, I have literally bought more than 60 copies of this book to share with parents and educators around the country. Every one I've spoken with who has seen and read this book has nothing but rave reviews to give it!

  • A must-have for kids ages 1-100!

    By A1ETZ9DC45V54B on 2001-07-04
I love this book!!! It is extremely well-written and full of interesting, fun information on REAL, noteworthy heroes. I have taught grades 7-12, and I have used "50 American Heroes" in each grade with students of all abilities. The "Power Words" prompt great discussions with the older students, and "Explore Some More!" activities help keep these heroes alive for the younger children. No matter what the reader's age or reading ability, this book is sure to teach him or her a lot about the people who have made a difference in our country and the world.

  • As good as it gets for childrens books

    By A2MXSKZ877VFXR on 2002-03-03
While looking through this book, it dawned upon me as a history professor how necessary it is for a book like this to be available. I find the authors premise that children of today need heroes to look up to, is not only valid but right on target. This book is well written, informative, and vast in the scope of individuals its covered. While I lecture on a college level, I have referred students who are interested in education to look this book over, and many times theyve come back to me and stated how they'd use this book in their own classrooms someday. But the best review I can give this book comes from my nine year old daughter, who reads this book over and over again, and comes to me to talk about these people. How great can a book be to provoke such a response from a little girl who only knows her dad "teaches some of this stuff to college students". This book is a good read for adults and kids, and adults with kids, and kids to read to adults.

  • A Collection of Real Heroes

    By A2KZCEWP72WK9Q on 2003-03-12
In a timeof Homer Simpson and Sponge Bob it is so refreshing to have a source of real heroes for school age children and adults alike. 50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet gives the reader a source of Americans who struggled and shaped our nation. They include living and dead, men and women, young and old who have made positive contributions. It is a great read aloud for my fourth grade during our biography unit. 50 American Heroes contains so many interesting and unique facts about these famous people, but it also allows you to see their human side. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to visit with the men and women who were and are the backbone of this great nation.

  • Inspiring and engaging
    By A15F7QB0WC8PHA on 2006-01-17
When I first found this book, I was impressed with the simple, accessible, straight-forward presentation of REAL WORLD heroes - for kids. When they get a chance to learn about the accomplishments of these people, they can have a real vision for themselves and for their lives. This is the kind of book that can make a positive impact on our world, a kid at a time, or better.

When I next read through the book, I was very impressed with the writing, for it presents a person (aka hero), his/her accomplishment(s), and then asks the readers to relate this to their own lives. The call it "Explore" - it is an invitation for the reader to make a part of the hero story become a part of them. What you are left with is the possibility that I can, that I am, that we are... It is a calling to be a hero, ourselves.

  • Fabulous Book
    By A27TLR5DO11WA3 on 2006-01-17
I went to a workshop recently where Dr. Denenberg presented, and am so excited to have a copy of his book. As a teacher I can see many uses for this book in the classroom. The stories really grab you and make you want to know more about each hero. I especially like that the authors included a diving in section for each hero. They give the reader other sources to find more information about their hero. I hope Dr. Denenberg writes many more books! I love his work.

  • Children can glimpse their destiny in the pages of this book
    By A2DBK368C0LKUO on 2002-03-08
There is no better time to introduce children (and adults!)to "50 American Heroes". This highly readable book presents a fascinating collection of heroes from diverse backgrounds, representing a vast array of pursuits. Their remarkable accomplishments inspire each of us to reach higher and further in our everyday lives. I personally believe children have the ability to catch of glimpse of their destiny at a young age. This book will open their eyes to diverse and exciting paths that can be taken and dreams that can be chased. As much as I love "Winnie the Pooh" and "Mickey Mouse", children need human role models, too!

  • Super Introduction to Super Heroes!
    By A32BKXZTHF6WHP on 2002-12-03
I can think of no better way to introduce students to biographies and true American heroes! As a student teacher, I have been very pleased with our students' responses. This wonderful book has been a beautiful and inspiring addition to our fourth grade classroom. After listening to selections from the book, students are asking to investigate the book during quiet activities. There are many favorite heroes revisited, such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Students also meet new (to them) heroes in people such as Matthew Henson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. It is a joy to share these brief glimpses of heroes that have inspired our students to look for a biography to "dive" in to! I recommend this book for parents, teachers, and students who love to learn about the people who have shaped, and continue to shape the United States.

  • An Essential Book for Any Library
    By on 2001-05-28
50 American Heroes is a "must have" book for children, parents, and teachers alike. As a teacher, it is the best book I have seen on heroes. It is user friendly and even as an adult, I wanted to do the activities and read more about the heroes. Since adding it to our school library, it has been in constant circulation.

This book is the very best our family has every read for keeping our interest, not wanting to put it down. We are all adults-sorry no kids live here, unless you can see the kids in us. We're 67,67 37, and 31. Fifty Heroes could not be better. Succinct, excellent, accurate, wonderful in every way. We are going to give copies to our siblings for them to enjoy and to share with all their grandkids when they visit, copies to a couple neighbor kids, a foster grandson, the list will go on and on in time. Besides being succinct, excellent, accurate and wonderful in every way, Fifty Heroes is written so kids can understand and be inspired to be a hero/heroine right away. We cannot say enough about this splendiferous book. Thank you so much for all the toil, sweat, stress, and thoughtfulness you endured to produce this greatest book of 2001. All of us in the Patches household wish you both the very best in your lives and forthcoming publications. Sincerely yours, Roger and Joan

  • Real Heroes for the Whole Family
    By on 2001-08-06
What a wonderful book - well written, entertaining, educational and even great looking! A perfect answer to that age-old summer question "What can I do? I'm bored." The book offers all sorts of activities to challenge and interest children. And it's not just for kids. I was surprised to read a lot that I didn't know about "real" heroes. I recommend it for the whole family.

  • A Heroic Book
    By on 2002-11-08
...This book tells you all about your favorite heroes. They tell you how the heroes lived and how they became famous. They have heroes like Elie Wiesel who lived through the Holocaustand the Wrighte brothers who invented the first airplane. each heroe has 2 pages on there history; each page has the heroes name, their life period, their nickname, what they did, pictures all about them and what they did, their "power words", and how to explore on them. They also have a "hero Hunt.
I loved this book because of how they explained the facts of all them, so I encourage you to read this book...

  • I wanted to be bowled over
    By A13G1TKIKHGV3F on 2008-09-05
I read all these great reviews, so of course I got the book. It's good. I like that each hero has two pages, and the book is thought-provoking.

    But it's slanted...

These _are_ good heroes to admire, but for the life of me, I can't think why a book like this would include Sandra Day O'Connor and exclude Clarence Thomas.

I prefer the Childhood of Famous Americans series -- the books are more in-depth and enjoyable, and more politically neutral.

  • A Book For All Schools
    By A142DDY0WOTCN8 on 2002-10-30
Using this book in school would certainly bring to the attention of today's children people who have accomplished much & would be excellent role models. It was a pleasure to read, even for a retired businessman. My opinion is that it is too easy in today's world for a child to see entertainers & people successful in sports, as well as cartoon characters, as "heros". This book gives our children a chance to read about real people who have made significant contributions to society and are what I would consider much more "hero like". The description of each hero is presented on two, easily readable pages, which will help keep even a young child's attention. In addition, I think including sources where additional information can be found concerning each hero is very helpful. And finally, the book serves to teach the values that I believe should be taught to the youth of our country.

  • Love the Book....Love Dr. Denenberg
    By A2NC5P0LETGOJT on 2006-07-31
I was a student of Dr. Denenberg's during the fall semester of 2001. I was so lucky to have had to opportunity to learn from such an amazing person. I use many of his teachings in my classroom today. I love reading this book and my students love it too! I've actually purchased copies for my friends and student teachers. This book is an asset to your library - and one that you'll treasure for years to come.

  • A Must-Have
    By A19WK9P0TQSZDN on 2007-03-25
I discovered this book several years ago. I teach in a school with mostly immigrant children who have little background knowledge of the heroes presented here. They love borrowing my copy to read during independent reading and I have used the book with my reading groups as well. The biographies are concise, interesting, and offer links to on-line information as well. I am such a fan that I have actually bought copies for each of my students to have for their own every year as an end-of-year/end of state testing gift. My students love to nominate candidates they would like to have included in a second volume. Not only are my students becoming better readers, but they are eager to write after being exposed to this book. Thank goodness for Dennis Deneberg and Lorraine Roscoe!

  • Nice Update!
    By A1R608J8RD8RXT on 2007-12-27
50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet is a wonderful book. The sections on each hero are concise, informative and up-to-date, especially for the heroes that are still alive. Includes heroes that are not new in history but usually are not included in publications. Excellent book for history classes in elementary grades.

  • Loving it!!
    By A2LN4KVPYL1DON on 2008-01-28
My New Year's resolution..one of them, is to read more with and in front of my children. I brought this book home and read to them one or two of the figures. They LOVED it. We read from it almost every night now. They fight over who gets to pick the figure we read about and actually ask me to go and get it. It's really nice that they are learning about older historical figures but also recognize some of the faces they are reading about. I try to make my kids understand that great people are not born that way they are normal people who aspire to greatness. This is a great way to teach them that and then some!!
