This camp spectacle stars Sherilyn Fenn (Boxing Helena) as an upper-crust Southern belle who abandons the posh life for sex on the road with a carny worker. Naturally, the older folk (Burl Ives, Louise Fletcher) take exception. Typically silly, soft-porn stuff from director Zalman King (Wild Orchid), this erotic joke of a movie is good for putting one's busy brain on hold for awhile. The eternal question -- what's up with Zalman King? By AZ1UFPNARPZD2 on 2001-10-29
Say this for Zalman King -- he knows how to film a sex scene. His films are frequently ludicrous and always seem to be in danger of collapsing under their own lurid symbolism but nobody can argue that he hasn't come up with some truly erotic images. Partly this is because King has consistently cast some of the most beautiful and sensous actors and actresses in film today. A perfect example -- the amazing Sherilyn Fenn is Two Moon Junction, the insane Southern melodrama that remains King's "best film." Fenn is the deceptively sweet daughter of a grand old Southern family who, despite being expected to marry a typically bland social equal, finds her drawn to drifer Richard Tyson. Now, this isn't exactly a love story -- at least not in the way that Hollywood usually makes love stories. What is made perfectly clear here is that the main attraction between Fenn and Tyson is that they have really great sex and a lot of it. And most of it on screen. Certainly, Burl Ives and Juanita Moore and a few other out-of-work name actors wander through the film without disrobing and King attempts to make a few "statements" about the nature of man. Fenn gives a strong performance (suggesting the charisma she'd later reveal in Twin Peaks) but in the end, this film becomes a rare combination of an unintentional campfest and an amazingly erotic film. Watching it seems to produce a bizarre combination of being both totally amused and seriously turned on.Even though his name doesn't seem to carry the same pop cultural amusement as it used to, Zalman King is still out there -- fighting to get his whacked-out vision of a world obsessed with sex, jump cuts, and needless camera angles onto screens across the world. The man who once played Jesus Christ in the movies has gone on to be come the foremost purveyor of pretentious sleaze -- i.e., films that try to hide their pornographic or exploitation roots by dressing all the sex and violence up with a bunch of metaphysical blather about the nature of man and such. And I say more power to him. Though King appears to take his work far too seriously and most of his films -- when you get right down to it -- are rather bad, they're also very entertaining in a "Somebody-actually-made-this-way." Zalman King is the Ed Wood of softcore -- his plotlines and dialouge are always good for a laugh. And say what you might about his skills as a director, King knows how to make even the most ludicrous scenes erotic.
Stylish, Sexy, and .... Silly! But still wonderful! By A3KMTOFTUUNFHG on 2003-06-26
Two words here should make anybody understand this movie - Zalman King. He was onboard for 9 1/2 Weeks, Red Shoe Diaries, and Wild Orchid. Love those flicks? This one's a winner too. Hate em? Steer clear and let the rest of us have some fun. Music is wonderful, camera work is outstanding, and the sex scenes increase in intensity throughout the film. The plot is simply a Southern pot-boiler about Sherilyn Fenn trying to chose between her vanilla fiancee and the ultra-hot carnival guy who makes her engines run (he looks like Michael Hutchence of INXS on steroids!). Throw in Louise Fletcher as a wise and iron-fisted grandmother who wants to see her make the "right" choice, and she'll kill anybody to make sure it happens! Also included are choice cameos by Kristy McNicol as a bi-sexual party girl, and Tattoo from Fantasy Island in his last role! It's a hot hoot! No special features here, but the DVD is a vast improvement over the video. Zalman King movies rely on visuals and music, so this is the only way to watch! Definitely worth the price of admission if you like your erotica served with sexy saxophones and white clothes everywhere! For some reason EVERY character in the movie wheres WHITE constantly. They must have spent most of the budget on bleach! Also watch for a pre-teen Milla Jovovich making an appearance as one of the little sisters. For [the money] you'll have a sensual blast!
An erotic story for women By A2AVU8IG1W5EBZ on 1999-04-03
I went to see this film in a movie theater when it was released. A man in the audieance yelled out "What is the point of this?" during the movie. Honey, there is no point. Zalman King's movies typically are geared toward male sexual fantasies, but this film will appeal more to women. Sherilyn Fenn is gorgeous and Richard Tyson will have women drooling. This is what porn should look like, from a woman's point of view. Every woman friend that I know that has seen this has liked it. The plot is questionable, like plots are in a lot of Zalman King's films, but it is erotic and steamy visually. Check out "Red Shoe Diaries" & "Delta of Venus" for more hot and sexually charged visuals.
Definitely worth watching! Entertainment for men and women. By on 2000-07-20
I first rented this movie about 10 years ago on the recommendation of a male friend of mine. I definitely thought this was a movie that both male and females would enjoy. How could any male resist the luminous and incredible beauty of Sherilyn Fenn and the undeniable raw animal magnetism of Richard Tyson -- those eyes, those lips, that unbelieveable body. Since then, I have been trying to see everything that Richard Tyson is in. I definitely believe this movie is one of his best role to date, as he seems to get type-cast as a "heavy" in most of his other movies, although I did enjoy his performance in the Red Shoes Diaries Part III, which was basically, a one-man show and he carried it off great. I truely enjoy his acting style as it appears he tries to individualize each character he plays, even when playing the "heavies". This movie is definitely worth watching and Kristie McNichols gives a refreshingly surprising and different performance than you would normally expect from her. I recently re-rented this movie and watched it over and over and over again. It's definitely a sexual fantasy for both men and women and I think there isn't a woman around who wouldn't succumb to the bad-boy charm of the character Mr. Tyson portrays. You can't help but love him in this movie. I've finally decided I had to add this movie to my permanent collection of movies and bought it. It sure does help getting through some long nights!
WHERE ARE ALL OF THE REVIEWS??!! By on 1999-04-07
I'm truly surprised that mine is the first review for this movie. I don't think this movie did well in the theatres, but so many women I know (we're in our 30's) are big fans of this movie. It's total fantasy, not even necessarily because of the sex, but because of this beautiful dream life that the lead character, the lovely Sherilyn Fenn, is living. Being swept off her feet by the bad boy carnival hunk is exciting, and their dialogue is fun and stimulating. Though Milla Jovovich has a fairly small part as one of the younger sisters, her presence adds to the beauty of this movie. Guys might find it silly, but the women I know love it!
- Not what I expected
     By on 2002-09-02
I have to say that this movie was much less then I expected. I watched this with my wife and she didn't care for it either. If you are watching it purely from a movie stand point: The acting was sub-par, the plot was almost non-existent, and many scenes were down right comical how poorly they were shot. A typical 80's B movie flop. If you are watching it for a soft-core-porn: The femaile lead is fairly hot, but not great. For the ladies, my wife thought the male lead was rather disgusting. The nudity was rather random and for the most part not sexy enough to do anything for either one of us. The last scene is extremely hot, but it's rather sudden and seems contrived. It's sad really, this movie had so much potential and it became a real waste of talent. I have seen many of these actors in other things and they were outstanding. I think this movie just tried a little too hard.
- Still a great erotic romp for women viewers!
     By A1XWAYBSUPU0B8 on 2000-01-13
I said it before, and I will say it again: this movie is a big turn-on for women! (At least women that I know, and I am in my 30's). Richard Tyson oozes sex appeal, as does the lovely Sherilyn Fenn. Don't watch this to be intellectually stimulated; watch it to be erotically stimulated! What a great fantasy!
- This has been a favorite for years for me!
     By on 1999-08-29
I absolutely love this movie! I think I have watched it about 25 times! I have been watching it since about age 12, when I started liking the type of guy that "Perry" was! I have to agree with the Burbank review! This movie is great! I think it is much better than its sequel. I highly recommend this to women especially. I think for men it is a little chessy, but if they like Sherilyn Fenn, this is for them! I am 21 and this movie has been on my list of favorites since about the time it came out on video! There should be more movies like this!
- Two Moon Junction - Guilty-Pleasure List Worthy
     By A1EUY4NCZ8XVM8 on 2006-08-14
This one is on my guilty-pleasure list. It's a soft-core romance/drama, 1988, starring Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks fame) and Richard Tyson (the dad in Kindergarten cop). Sherilyn plays a southern belle from a wealthy family, engaged to Martin Hewitt - hmm, I'm remembering him with Brooke Shields in Endless Love with the same-named theme song - the approved rich boy. She winds up having a torrid fling with Richard and ultimately has to choose between what is right for her heart, or maybe just loins, and what her family has endorsed. Her grandmother is played by Louise Fletcher (an older, sophisticated and very platinum Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest!). Burl Ives is the Sheriff assigned to break up the lovers. Kristy McNichol is all grown up and makes an appearance vying for Richard's attention too.
Shall we add more obstacles to Sherilyn's interest in Richard and her family's disapproval? Well, sure...he's a CARNEY. Let's add Herve Villechaize to the carnival craziness, and no, I'm not kidding. I figure the next time I watch this movie he'll finally reward me with a familiar cry of "the plane! the plane!"
Okay, it's definitely a chick flick but the soft-core factor will hold your attention as well, gentlemen. The bachelor and bachelorette parties are...well...fun.
- Very interesting movie
     By A4F8CJ1L4348V on 2007-05-29
I watched this movie and knew nothing about it's director or writer. I did like this movie and also liked the plot that it offered as well. I thought that the actors delivered a very believable charactors and the story was interesting. What I did find disappointing was the information that I found on the net about the full screen verses the wide screen version. In the full screen version they edit out the "male nudity" of Richard Tyson but don't edit out the "female nudity" of Sherilyn Fenn. I don't have a problem with female nudity and how it is presented. What I do have a problem with is when they edit out the male nudity for no reason other than to make the screen smaller. I will recommend this movie, but purchase the widescreen to actually see this movie the way it was meant to be.
- Sex for women - about time!
     By A1WLKLB2YD3CI2 on 1999-11-19
People have criticized this movie for not being intellectually stimulating, and they are correct. However, it's not my intellect that I want stimulated when I watch this movie! And I cannot believe the whole "carpet doesn't match the drapes " thing; if you're going to nitpick the movie, watch it CAREFULLY - they mention that she dyed her hair when she first comes back to her parents' from college. Anyway, it doesn't have a brilliant plot, it's not a brain teaser and it's not great art. It is a wonderfully crafted sexual fantasy, and I believe that was what it was intended to be.
- An erotic guilty pleasure!!
     By A16S9Z6R8WA9JS on 2001-01-09
My wife was the person who recommended this movie to me, and needless to say I was quite happy with the result. Two Moon Junction is sexy, and satisfying for the both the male, and female viewers. The on screen couple of Tyson, and Fenn have smouldering chemistry, and their love scenes were quite sensual, and filled with heat. Nice cameo by Louise Fletcher who i always love to see in a overpowering and menacing role. No this movie is not rocket science, but it is well worth an evenings entertainment. No one has mentioned the cool ending, and hope that you will give it a watch.
- Carrie Bradshaw of the South in the 80s
     By AIXFB6DDF44P7 on 2004-09-13
The pre-Sex and the City generation women luv this movie and I can understand why. Anyway, I just discovered that the technical info on Aspect Ratios here is incorrect. Well, the correct term is not updated.
Under the Columbia Tristar (http://www.cthv.com/) brand, this movie is presented in two size formats (a rarity nowadays), 1.33:1 standard screen or 1.85:1 letterboxed widescreen.
The one shipping now is released under Sony Pictures (http://www.sonypictures.com/) brand and it only comes with fullscreen format 1.33:1
No widescreen version is available.
Anyway, I agreed with someone who said that this movie is a great watch after a break up. The last time I saw this movie was in 1989.
- Point of order
     By AYVY3C2K72XG8 on 1999-04-10
Am I the only one who noticed that Sherilyn's carpet didn't match her drapes, if you get my drift?
- Is worth seeing just to gaze upon Richard Tyson!
     By A2J6MMNWUJQUXS on 1999-12-02
I have loved this movie since I first watched it when I was about 16. What a bod, what a face, what a man! I shouldn't get started. I definitely fell in love with Richard Tyson from the moment I laid eyes on him. It is definitely a fantasy for women with a plot I actually enjoyed. Ever since then I have had a thing about carnivals!
- a true coming of age movie
     By on 2001-05-06
I saw this movie the summer after graduating from college while I was trying to choose between marrying a law student or dumping him for a summer with a construction worker. I was living with a sorority sister and she and I both LOVED this movie (I still regret not finding out which scenes she liked best). Needless to say, Fenn's choice, as a sorority belle, of a respectable marriage or lust with a carny, sidetracked temporarily by Kristy McNichol, really spoke to me. It got me hooked onto soft-core porn, especially those with bi-experimental themes. And gave me a whole new respect for southern belles. This is a classic and a must-see for any curious woman who still loves her men.
- Disappointed
     By A2K3PPXML1TZ83 on 2006-11-04
Two Moon Junction is the story of a woman who dismisses the comforts of her family's riches and wealth to follow her obsession with a carnival rogue. Following those obsessions, she engages in a steamy, passionate affair with this man. Surrounding this affair is her grandmother, and the matriarch of the family is not happy with her granddaughter's selection in lovers. She plots with the local sheriff to stop the affair and save her family's reputation.
The plot of this story is simple and plausible, but the acting left a lot to be desired, and appeared to be more on the level of an overrated "B" movie. The steamy/ passionate sex scenes were just that...exciting, steamy and seductive, at least until our leading man opened his mouth. His views of their affair along with his arrogant, cocky attitude sliced through any romance in this story, and dropped it's rating to something slightly above a stag party flick.
- A Gay Man's Perspective.
     By on 2000-07-27
Okay, ladies, you're not the only ones who find this movie both intellectually vapid and emotionally "stimulating." This flick made me want to run off and join a travelling carnival! I'm glad it's now in DVD, with easy "freeze-frame" functions; my VHS tape was getting worn out trying to "pause" so often during Richard Tyson's many shirtless scenes. :)

Solid soft-core porn with enough of a nighttime soap story to get your girlfriend/wife hooked.
- This Movie Rocks,,,
     By on 2003-07-08
The more I watch it..the more it rocks! I keep thinking why can't all movies be more like this one. Here's the deal, every true guy out there would kill to be like Tyson, I used to work with a guy years ago who looked exactly like this character, chicks would throw themselves at him (now he works for a railroad, has three kids and weighs 250 pds,) but besides the point I was always enveyous of this guy. Fenn is just too great in this movie, she did a great acting job and regardless what some of the critics thought (Ebert, like he could EVER understand a movie like this, even in his wildest dreams) it had a good plot, it had great sex, it had mystery, but it was done extremely tasteful. This is far far from porn, some say soft-porn, I think it's a masterpiece, it could never be mainstream (for the sex) but it made me think how valuable and exciting life was at that time in life when you had everything ahead of you and could afford the risks and didn't worry about the outcomes.
- Incredible!
     By A3MZDTPM7B31WT on 2003-10-24
This is one of my favorite movies - has been for years. I own this one and have watched it 1000 times. It is hauntingly erotic - with an ending that leaves you wondering. Sherilyn and Richard are a beautiful pair..I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
- THE EXCITMENT OF TWO MOON
     By A369FL43G2UA2M on 2003-12-28
Two Moon Junction is a favourite of mine. When I first saw it I thought that it was good, but since owning it on DVD it's grown a whole lot more on me. I first hired it because I'm a big fan of Milla Jovovich and love Sherilyn Fenn, and Martin Hewitt (from 'Endless Love'). Boy was I in for a treat. From the moment April meets Perrey I was even more intrigued. I love the use of music that Zalman puts in at certain moments in scenes, Wild Orchid is a perfect example. Zalman King is a master of all things erotic and sexy. Fine performances from the lovely Sherilyn Fenn, the sexy Richard Tyson and Martin Hewitt. Plus you always know a film's not that bad when lines get stuck in your head like ''April darlin'. By Justine Ryan
- Chick Flick Indeed
     By on 2004-06-16
OK. So it's either a masterpiece or cheesy soft porn. This is still one of the best chick flicks to see after a break-up. I own it now and watched it for the first time while in a long-term relationship. It still works. The cinematography is beautiful, the costumes are white and the story is timeless. What woman wouldn't want to cross over to the dark side if she can encounter someone like Richard Tyson? Yum! Besides, men can appreciate Sherilyn Fenn and women can see the full monty, although not Tyson's. Order a pizza, pour a diet Coke or Pepsi, invite your female friends and just enjoy.
- Loved it!
     By A38FSHGA6ETB4O on 2004-08-17
The chemistry between April and Perry is so real you can almost touch it! A great love story! A heck of an ending!
- Two Moon, brings 5 Stars
     By A1XQTSD55F39C4 on 2006-02-24
This is a great steamy fantsy flick. If you go into the mind set that it is a "B" movie, you will not be disappointed. I enjoyed the "red Shoe Diaryish" quality the movie seemed to have.
We enjoyed it very much and purchased it after renting a couple of times as one of our fav "B" flicks.
- Classic Zalman King!
     By A1RWH7UILX37VG on 2002-08-17
This has to be one of my all time favourite movies, 'Red Shoe Diary' is another! Sexy, fun and erotic with a brilliant soundtrack! If you like to watch an erotic love story featuring beautiful people then this one is for you! I totally recommend it!!
- If only they could have cast a good looking actor!!.
     By A3FNNJXYFA1BNW on 2004-11-16
This movie is a complete waste of time, not to mention(your) money. This is a 'hot southern nights' drifter/ romance plot that was big in the 50's and 60's. They work when Paul Newman types play them, not Richard Tyson-'can you say totally gross!!' yuck!. Sherilyn Fenn is lovely, however she has nothing on her mind in the film except getting down and dirty with the ugly
carny drifter dude. There really is no rhyme or reason to this movie. I was glad to see that they had at least thought to employ some "real" actors Burl Ives, Juanita Moore,ect... however not enough lines given to them to save this low budget 80's soft porn movie,The only reason to buy and/or rent this would be if you're interested in interior design and/or set design. Do yourself a favor and rent or buy "No Mercy" with Kim Bassinger and Richard Gere. Please skip this one!, You can find better trust me.
- Not horrible
     By A2HVC1IXR56PPS on 2005-04-17
This movie has some, er, sentimental value to me, since the two moon junction scene was the first sex scene I ever saw -- and, since I was 7 or 8 at the time, it was also (IIRC) my introduction to the idea of sex (or at least naked people kissing ;) ).
In any case, based on a vague memory of that scene and the word "junction" I found this movie again and wanted to see it. The best I can say for it, though, is that it's not horrible. The sex scenes are not bad at all, but they're not exactly great, either.
As a movie experience (vs. a soft porn experience), the movie spends quite a bit of time building April's angst at going into a life that she isn't crazy about but that her whole family wants and expects her to go into. It sets her up to make a difficult choice between what is "best" for her -- a marriage to a successful but plain "company man" fiancé -- and her libidinous attraction to a muscly carnival worker, a drunken pig with a heart of gold (sort of). Oh yeah, and glasses, which he puts on when he needs to look sophisticated. They seem to want to get the angst across so desperately that not one but TWO sex scenes end with April bursting into tears.
But then it throws all this build-up away with what appears to be a "have your cake and eat it, too" ending that kind of renders the rest of the movie pointless. Is her choice understandable? Certainly. Will you find it satisfying? Depends on if you like the whole having and eating thing, but it certainly isn't compelling.
This is definitely a movie with limited appeal, and it's hard to recommend it as anything more than a possible rental. There will be many who would find it boring, I think.
- Still Love It After All These Years
     By A1K05RZKX73TZ2 on 2006-07-15
Saw this movie on the recommendation of a male friend of mine many years ago. Loved it then & love it now. In fact, I recently bought it to add to my dvd collection & bought a copy as well for my sister, who was just ga-ga over Richard Tyson, back in the day.
Every woman I know who has seen the movie loves it. So, some things in the film don't make sense...who cares??? It's great to suspend all logical thought & just sit back & enjoy!
- Just what I needed..
     By A1CUTRLLUQ0OIM on 2006-08-04
What's silly about it? I love this movie. Richard Tyson may not have a pretty boy face, but his body is pretty darn sexy! That's enough for me! Just too bad they can't show more of him.
Anyway, Sheryl is beautiful and sexy as well which makes for great sex scenes. Women, if you like what you see on the cover (Richard Tyson, Sheryl) buy it. It's softcore, but still good. One thing I thought might of been great was the cowgirl chick and Sheryl together with Richard. Heh...kinky me.
