The woods have always been full of whispers in Transylvania, of terrors that go back centuries to the legendary Vlad Dracul himself. Ignoring their professor's grave warning--beware those who would prey upon the innocent--several visiting students travel into the forest…and disappear. Now their professor, Bryan McAllister, believes that a dark cult is at work--and that their next gathering will happen in America.

When psychologist Jessica Fraser is approached by Bryan for her assistance, she is hesitant. Something about Bryan unnerves Jessica deeply, yet she cannot ignore the incredible pull she feels toward him. Now, as reluctant allies, they unite to seek the truth. The search takes them from the forested mountains to dimly lit clubs in New Orleans' French Quarter, where perversion goes beyond sexual to life-threatening.

And everywhere, whispering on the wind, is the dreaded word…vampyr.

  • Paranormal Romance

KISS OF DARKNESS was a very entertaining way to pass an evening. The review on the back of the book is totally WRONG. I started the book and by the time I finished I knew whoever wrote the blurb for the back page did not read the book. It was a lot better than the one on the back page. I esspecially liked the presence of her characters from the vampire books she writes as "Shannon Drake".

The prologue sets the stage for the book and gives us very good clues as to who Bryan and Jessica really are.

Jessica Frasure is a psychologist who travels to Transylvania to investigate a series of vampire parties. While there she becomes involved with three college students. They are terrorized and one is in a comma, when they return to New Orleans. She has some secrets herself, but mainly she is a member of a group of otherworldly people who are trying to protect the unsuspecting humans around them.

Bryan is not who he claims to be either, he is searching for vampires and destroying them when he finds them. For a thousand yrs he has been hateing and killing the monsters. He has hunted the "Master" since his awakening. Now he is faced with the fact that there are "good" vampires in the world.

Both Jessica and Bryan are drawn to each other. The depth of their feelings seems to frighten each of them. But when they realize that the "Master" has one aim and that is to destroy both of them, they must come togather to fight his power.

If you have read Shannon Drake's (aka Heather Graham) Vampire books you will recognize Maggie and Sean from UNDER A BLOOD-RED MOON, and Lucian, the king of the Vampires. I really enjoyed the book and I felt it was a different and unique take on Vampires. It certainly was a fun read.

  • I loved it

    By A39CQ3VGHVTC12 on 2006-09-09
FYI: Heather Graham is definitely NOT new to paranormal story. This book is actually a continuation of Heather Graham's vampire series under her pseudonym "Shannon Drake". The majority of the non human characters in this book have previously appeared in their own respective stories in books written under "Shannon Drake". For instance, the detective in this book with his wife Maggie, their story was told in "Under the Blood Red Moon". Other characters whose stories have been told previously included: Tara & Ragnor, Jade and the vampire King, etc. So if you like this book, go search for Shannon Drake's books on Amazon. They're worth searching for, trust me!

One thing I like about Heather Graham's aka Shannon Drake's vampire stories is because they're different than most vampire novels out there. With her love for Scotland and New Orleans, she normally weaves one or two of those elements into her vampire books. This one is no different. I loved the interaction between Jessica and Bryan, and their instant attraction for each other which later was explained layer by layer throughout the book.
    It's a very good read.

  • Heather Graham's paranormal debut is wonderful!

    By AV1XBZPFJ1Z1K on 2006-09-03
This was the first book I've ever read by Heather Graham and it won't be the last! She has a done a wonderful job of "revealing" crucial information to the plot of the story layer by layer. Jessica, the heroine is a Vampire who was "turned" by "the Master" a century ago and the hero is Bryon, a warrior who loved her and "died" to trying to save her life. What I loved was the way Graham layed the story out for the reader. You may be confused at first, but with the turn of each page an ever thickening plot unfolds. The sexual tension between Jessica and Bryon causes each of them to question the "familiarity" of their embraces and kisses. Apparently, though they've taken alternate identities in the present,(Jessica is a Psychologist and Bryan is a professor specializing in what else--the time period in which he lived) they ARE the two lovers who have never forgotten one another for over a thousand years! They each thought the other was dead. And of course "the Master" wants a final showdown, featuring just him and the two of them.

I don't know what kind of historical writer Heather Graham is, but she definately needs to continue to write paranormal romances! "Kiss of Darkness" gives a slight spin on what we know about Vampires and the plot was solid!

  • Another one worth reading

    By A3ULCYWAPJCVL on 2006-09-23
I don't review every book I've read and I'm not big on the fancy words. I am an avid reader and spend more time reading then reviewing. But when in my opinion, I have read a good book or a bad one; I put my 2 cents in.

I don't think I need to add much, if you've read the rest of the reviews you will see this book is worth reading. Another good book by Graham.

  • Disappointed and deceived.

    By A1CH50VBFP92DX on 2006-10-15
I enjoyed the first third of this book and then I began to feel as if I had missed something along the way. A number of the characters (and there are quite a few) obviously had history that wasn't fully explained by the end of the book. Even though I enjoyed the story of Jessica and Bryan I felt it was also a little thin and the ending felt rushed. I was more interested in finding out about Maggie and Sean, Lucien and Brent so when I finished the book I naturally went on to Amazon and looked up Shannon Drake. I have never read any of the books but I knew that Heather Graham wrote paranormals under that name. I was very disappointed to learn that the last few books in the series written under Shannon Drake received very poor reviews and can only presume that's why Kiss of Darkness was published under Heather Graham. Unfortunately this will make me cautious when buying any HG books in the future and as I feel deceived I have lost any interest in readng the SD books. We readers come to feel an attachment to our favourite authors and now I feel betrayed by the seemingly underhanded way this book was published. I am giving it 3 stars because the promise of a good read was there.

  • Superb

Wonderful read!! Quick, fast paced and in a typical style for Heather Graham. I always feel like I know her characters. I can't wait for many many more. I think I've read all of her mystery/suspense books so I really want MORE!!!

  • What A Read!!!
    By AN0XWUHSHRUG6 on 2007-03-02
Jessica Fraser travels to Transylvania for a conference. She is plagued the night before with unrest and questions why the idea of travel has her so upset. Despite her misgivings she packs her bags and wings her way east. While in Romania she feels as if she's being watched by the man she dreams about called "Master." She meets a man named Bryan and he requests her help and Jessica is not sure if she should help him or not. She's hiding a secret but the attraction she feels for Bryan is too strong. Together they will team up to fight evil but will they have a chance to be happy after the dust settles?

What can you say...It's Heather Graham. This was a fantastic page turner and one that I highly recommend. It was thrilled to find this was a continuation of her vampire stories she penned under her other name Shannon Drake. Ms. Graham is a wonderful talent who manages to interweave several different storylines together which ultimately gives the book more depth. Bryan and Jessica are fine additions to the stories she's created and the chemistry that burns between them is sexy. I highly recommend this read.

  • Romance with a BIG paranormal twist!!
    By A3N61N91YEIZ47 on 2006-09-08
If you like Heather Graham and enjoy stories about vampires, you will love reading this book. This is a first for Ms. Graham in the vampires area although her book "Ghost Walk" has some paranormal elements.

Under a red moon, the story begins almost a thousand years ago although we the reader aren't given a specific time period. It is fairly obvious due to the type of warfare, battle and the fact there are knights and kings. A knight who is the right-hand of his king and in love with his king's illegitimate daughter, is on a horse with the king and his army overlooking the enemy who is trying to lure them out. He sees his love and her encounter with the evil that stalks them. They charge into battle but as they see a trap that there are many, many men that were hidden to their sight, the knight charges in and allows the king to escape.

Now we are in the present in New Orleans which is recovering and rebuilding after hurricane Katrina. Jessica Fraser, a psychologist, is with her various friends including a police detective and his wife, jazz musicians and others at a jazz club. New Orleans with its strange mix of people is the site of voodoo and other occult groups and fads and criminals. Jessica is heading to a psychologist's conference in Romania and her friends are worried about her for reasons not yet clear but also because she feels very uneasy that something is going to happen that is bad and soon. Jessica also owns a lovely old home that she runs a small B and B out of and has an assistant, Stacey, and handyman, Gareth, who help out. Everyone is very protective of her.

Arriving in Romania the next day, Jessica keeps feeling like she is being followed and seems in fear of "the Master" whom she dreamed about. Some students from New Orleans on an academic trip are invited to a bondage party and since the young woman invited is a journalism major, she persuades her ex-boyfriend to come with her and a girl friend to the party. He too feels uneasy but is not sure why so he leaves a note for Jessica whom they met in Romania. A history professor Bryan McAllister is also in Romania giving a lecture at a conference and he too appears worried about the wild parties being given.

After all this setup once the action starts, more and more layers to the story and its main characters are revealed. I don't always enjoy vampire novels but this one is worth a read due to the excitement and twists and romance!!

  • Graham loses me on this one.
    By A278ATJ90SNIW9 on 2006-12-22
I have read all of Heather Graham's books and loved them. Usually I can hardly put the book down because once you start reading you don't want to do anything else.
I wasn't able to get a preview before I ordered so I wasn't sure what the book was about. Given her history of awesome books I figured this one would be great too.

I started it and couldn't get into it so I left it for a month and went back to it and as hard as I tried I didn't make it half way through it. I ended up donating it but I was very disappointed in it.

  • Better than expected
    By A205MVZWDI7JM0 on 2007-03-12
I didn't expect much after reading the back cover and was therefore pleasantly surprised by the well rounded the story of Jessica Fraser, psychologist and bed & breakfast owner in New Orleans. I'd categorize the book as a vampire mystery with some well placed love scenes thrown in rather than a vampire romance novel. There's a fresh new take on vampires and vampire hunters to surprise the reader and even though I wasn't compelled to read it in one day I was sufficiently interested by the story to finish the book and the further I read the more I was curious how the author would let it all end.
