Stomp Out Loudx$7.65
    (105 reviews)
Best Price: $7.65
Stomp is a rhythmic, musical extravaganza that has stunned audiences across the globe. If you weren't lucky enough to catch them in your hometown (or you did and you crave more), now there's Stomp Out Loud, a special HBO performance that will bring the unusual musical feats right into your living room. You might just find yourself grabbing a broom or even your remote control to keep time. "It's comedy, it's theater, it's very physical, it's energetic, it's occasionally quite terrifying," says one performer. Taking their show from the theater to the streets, this astonishing troupe can make music out of just about anything and just about anywhere. The opening sequence shows them dangling by harnesses across the back of a Manhattan billboard drumming on hubcaps, pipes, street signs, and plastic garbage pails, all the while swaying and keeping in perfect time. You know how you like to groove along to the radio while driving? Stomp doesn't need a radio--they use their hands to make their own music while cruising the streets of New York. Using just basketballs in a steamy alleyway, the troop creates an incredibly intricate dance and sound with the street, brick walls, and Dumpsters. Included in the program are the push broom, garbage can, and pole dances, just a few of their best-known sequences. Stomp Out Loud showcases the performers in the theater, out about town, and in short humorous vignettes (love the recurring card game!). All in all, they amaze. This well-produced video also includes a trailer and a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of Stomp Out Loud. --Dana Van Nest

Truly Unique Form Percussion By A3MAZM138KFVOW on 2000-05-03
HBO 50-minute special on the group "Stomp" featuring numerous unique performances at different urban locations that are inter-mixed with the group's stage show before a live audience. Very enjoyable for people interested in seeing a group of talented young performers, or musicians, make music with percussion through common everyday items. Using poles, hammers, trashcans, plastic containers, and anything else that can produce a beat or a tone, the group provides some astounding sounds that are only matched by their fascinating techniques. Most remarkable is a portion of the group performing with basketballs in an alleyway, using trash-bins, security doors, and the street itself to produce a rhythmic beat. There's another sequence where they perform in the large kitchen of a restaurant, achieving an amazing range of sounds. The members of the group are entertaining to watch and they add a lot of humor to their performances. The length of the feature is about right and it does not drown viewers with repetitious sounds, a very well done feature on an innovative and unique musical group.
rhythmic brilliance By AQ8DU6XVA3USJ on 2004-05-04
What astounds me about these dance/percussion numbers is their intricacy, which must have required relentless rehearsing, and yet there is almost an improvisational, immediate quality about them; some of them are performed on a stage, some on location in New York City, and they seamlessly segue from one to another. I especially like the transition from the alley ball game into the kitchen with the marvelous cigar-chomping chef. This innovative show was created in the early 90s in the U.K. by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas (who met in 1981 as members of a street band called "Pookiesnackenburger") and they share directorial credits for this HBO film; the show in its stage version has received numerous awards with its many productions around the globe. Some of these performers have star quality, and it's a shame names are not put to the faces, but with so many different casts world-wide, even the ones in this film remain only as part of a list in alphabetical order. The cinematography is also excellent, by Christophe Lanzenberg. One would think that a wordless show with only percussion for music would become monotonous, but it captures and holds our attention because of its imaginitive skill, its humor, and the talent and energy of its performers. Dance fans will love "Stomp Out Loud". Total running time is 50 minutes, and that includes a 5 minute sketch on the who, how, and where of the film.
An interesting complement to the live show By A3S5C7Y0WT2Q9N on 2002-04-07
We already know the extent to which complex, entertaining rythmic compositions can flow from this ensemble's use of everyday ordinary objects, household items, or even junk. Stomp is so clever that way, and I can't help but reminisce about how often I banged on stuff just for entertainment in my younger days. This performance, taken from an HBO special in 1997, sacrifices a bit of the energy of Stomp's live show for the more intimate perspective gained by having a camera filming in the midst of the performers. More interesting still are the different locales (all in New York City) used for a number of the routines: a Soho alley, a kitchen, a rooftop, and even under a pier at a sugar refinery. I thought the camera work was excellent, and I appreciated having different "stages" upon which to showcase these talented performers (they're all accomplished percussionists). The on-stage (i.e., with the audience) portion of the show differs from the rest in that four cameras were employed to capture a variety of viewing angles from on-stage and off. You can't get this experience from seeing them live (for me, twice), so that's why I like having this DVD. Aside from the percussive interaction of the "band," you can also see their faces, so there's an acting component of the show that adds another fun dimension. A few minor disappointments: fifteen chapters (performance routines) are listed in the keep case notes; however, there's no #15 in the show. Also, the run time was several minutes shy of the stated 50 minutes (the missing routine?) which is REAL short to begin with. The "Special Features" part of the disc contains nothing but reading material and a few photos. I was hoping for something like "Stomp - Behind the Scenes," which would have been a blast, so there's almost nothing to be experienced in terms of the group members' personalities or the filming experience. Maybe on another DVD . . . Overall, I'd recommend this to just about anyone interested in percussion or performance art.
Super set + good camera work = awesome production! By A8DS1NET2IBZC on 2000-04-05
I'll assume people know of STOMP from reading about them or seeing them somewhere prior... This video stars many members of STOMP, but seems to feature the cream of the crop for most of the pieces. There are brooms, poles, garbage cans, scaffolds with swaying members hitting assorted junk; but there are a few pieces here that can't be performed on a stage. For the most part, we are watching a short set on stage, but there are cuts and segues to little "skits" or pieces that happen elsewhere, only to return to the stage afterwards. It keeps things fresh, lively. One set involves 6 people, 6 basketballs, and an alley. Lots of interesting patterns come from here. One weirder set involves STOMPers in the kitchen, chopping and cleaning and cooking - more on the visual side, but it gives STOMP another side to enjoy. Two water-themed sets come first with the members in the water hitting pipes, then a cut to the stage again where members play barrels while being rained upon. The rhythms and energy are enough to make this video good enough just to have playing in the background, and definitely a must-buy to watch. But when you mix in unique pieces that you'll never see on stage, camera angles and close-ups that you can't get at a live show, and a few brief interviews of members, this will get you to do some STOMPing yourself!
Doesn't effectively capture the energy of the live show By A3EKK7FDAZECS9 on 2001-08-17
I loved watching Stomp live, so when I found out the DVD version was available, I got it right away. Stomp, the concept, is amazing: using everyday objects and movements to create rhythm and beat. Anyone lucky enough to catch a live version of Stomp knows what I'm talking about. The show truly is pure energy, and it's awesome. The DVD has only a few bits of the live performance. For the most part, it consists of several filmed segments of people Stomp-ing. The segments look like music videos. In other words, they look edited and polished. I think this "polished" appearance makes these filmed segments less raw and energetic than the live segments. Because I really like the Stomp concept, I think it is worth watching, in any form. If you haven't seen it live and this is the only way to watch it, I think you'll be impressed with how even the most mundane objects can be used to create rhythm and beat. If you have seen it live, though, then I think the DVD pales by comparison. So, three stars for the concept, but not the execution, of the pure energy that is Stomp.
- Stomp is FANTASTIC
     By A3N0ZZJUFYVCYR on 2003-03-26
I have seen this movie many times and usually just try to rent it. After fewer and fewer rental places kept this one around I finally broke down and bought it. It's that good. You will be tapping your feet and banging on everything in sight. If you havn't seen Stomp live I recommend seeing one of their performances in addition to this movie. While the movie is good and does things that the performers cannot accomplish on the stage it is not as impressive as seeing Stomp live. If you know nothing about Stomp let me give you a little overview. They are a group that turns the everyday noises of life into music. They make amazing precussion and physical performances from things like push brooms and lighters. My favorite one on this tape is a scene where they are making rhythms with basketballs and anyone who has ever played with a basketball will understand the difficulty of what they do. Their every movement is exact and perfectly executed. I highly recommend this video to everyone of every age and those who have or haven't seen Stomp live. It's a great video and has some interesting interviews with the performers in addition to the amazing performances.

We saw the stage production years ago and appreciated the talent then. The DVD is as good and more. No one leaves the room when this is playing.
- Trash Can Band
     By A1PGWM839MLSFZ on 1999-12-14
WOW! Stomp Out Loud has to be one of the most original and entertaining films I've ever seen. Today, most of the movies coming out follow a general trend - great graphics, no movie! Stomp, however, is filled hypnotizing music done with trash cans, brooms, or anything you can think of! This is a feat in itself, but also making the film highly entertaining and suitable for people of all ages is icing on the cake! If you like great music, buy this video! You will not be disapointed! I promise!
- Great show! Awesome skills!
     By A26445I3Q9KL8T on 2001-10-10
I only gave it four stars because of the presentation of the scenes. It was a little too scattered for my personal tastes. Progressing through the streets of New York, to the kitchens, elevators, on and off the stage, the show is interesting and the things that these people do with percussion is just amazing. Dropped my jaw from the get-go, and it nearly came off my head. Some of the scenes were unnecessary, I thought, and some weren't given the air-time I would have liked. Myself, I could have watched their entire stage-show and been entranced for as long as they went on. But it was a great buy, and I heartily recommend this to any and everyone who plays, has played instruments (real or air-based). Warning: This may leave you listening to random noises and trying to match the beat. It's pretty amazing.
- doesnt beat the show, but of course, fantastic
     By A3NC0TF75JQJ95 on 2004-09-24
of course nothing compares to actually being in the theatre watching the actual show, but that only lasts for a little over an hour. when you want to see the amazing talent of these musicians, this dvd shows it.
i highly recommend this dvd. it is absolutley amazing, the skills. you'll really get wrapped up in the catchy rythyms and beats.

- A perfect blend of rhythm, visuals and humor
     By on 1999-06-06
I had heard about them and about how good they were. It wasn't until I saw this movie on HBO that I truly understood why they are such a phenomenon. The transitions alone are amazing. They make music with everything from playing cards, basketballs, pushbrooms, etc. They are the London Philharmonic of the inner city.
- Most awesome and awe-inspiring!!
     By on 1999-08-06
"Stomp" is the most incredible percussionist group I have ever seen. The instant chages in rhythm that they pull off in perfect timing with each other are phenominal. I just had to show the video to my friends and my family, and wish I could see the group live for myself. Way to go, "Stomp"!!!!
- Babies and preteens loved the video. . . not surprising.
     By on 1999-06-07
Stomp Out Loud was shown as an end-of-the-year treat to the 5th & 6th grades. . . what a treat. The students LOVED it. I rerented it to show my 2 1/2 year and 10 month old grandchildren, they were enchanted with the rhythms as well. Needless to say I loved it too
- You'll never receive this DVD from Amazon!
     By AU2HEX1CGCB8R on 2006-03-09
I ordered this DVD in November 2005. It's March 2006 and I still haven't received it. I get e-mails every few weeks saying it's being prepared for shipping but it never ships. They won't let me cancel because they say it's in process. Don't bother ordering this DVD. It will NEVER arrive!
- It'll make you nod your head to the beat.
     By on 1999-10-15
If you know percussion like me, you realize the talent and difficulty that these preformers must go through. The Stomp video is packed with a new beat every few seconds. Its great to groove with, I have even taught some of the beats and grooves to my students.
- Stomp Out Loud makes me want to scream out loud!
     By A3F5JV08JUY06C on 2001-04-17
Incredible. If you have never seen Stomp live, then do it! If that is impossible, then watch this video. These masters of rhythm are awesome. Whether they have a basketball, a broom, or a butcher knife in their hands, they create drama, energy and excitement through rhythm! There are segments in this video that could not be performed live. That is a bonus! Also, the short documentary about "Stomp" is incredible! My children love this as well. Great for the whole family!
- a visual feast of rhythm - a real treat
     By A2JCWYSG0MZL7W on 2001-12-25
What else can I say? This is the DVD to get if you still haven't got a chance to see this type of performance live. If you can see it live, do it. Sell your house if you have to.
- An Incredibly Talented Group
     By AXJ6ZAZH3KA1H on 2003-11-29
This is something everyone - regardless of having any musical background or not - will definitely enjoy!! Just sit back and watch in amazement as to HOW and WHAT this group uses in creating an on-going rhythm.Simply amazing!!
- they do it with cool stuuf
     By A2NDW9IKM0N3D2 on 2000-06-15
this is so cool what they do is make songs and the songs have no words but 1 song. But what they do is they use like household objects like pots and pans really cool. This is also a great movie for teachers also.
- Fun, but lacks the excellent pacing of the stage show
     By on 1998-11-24
This production didn't have to live within the confines of a stage environment, and they definitely used that to their advantage. A good way to convey the energy to someone who's been unable to see the stage production.Unfortunately, this became kind of a "highlights" tape. So we see some of the routines in full multi-participant video bites; what we don't see is the great pacing of the stage show bits -- each of which starts light, maybe one actor, and gradually builds to a climax by adding more elements and people. Most of the more minimalist elements didn't make the cut. They need to do another tape or two!
- STOMP!

a beutiful tape containing all you need to hear about STOMP. i was in their show, and seeing this tape revived the experience. very very recommended.
- Stomp Out Loud Inspires Family Music Making
     By on 1999-01-15
School was closed for a snow day and we had already played outside for more than an hour. We came in for hot cocoa and our first viewing of Stomp Out Loud. My sons, ages 6 and 4, were enthralled...I was too. The older brother was inspired to rig his brother's bunkbeds with various objects and call for us to join him in some rhythm making. Not only am I sure our family will view this tape over and over again...I know we'll be having all sorts of fun times experimenting with rhythm together. I highly recommend this for adults and kids. Teachers and camp counselors will find inspiration for designing activities that allow children to experiment with music for the fun of it and/or the science of sound.
- Stomp kicks ass!

- Amazing
     By A3SNDCSNSJP0YV on 2005-10-26
If you can't see the actual show, this is the next best thing. Nobody understands the possibilities and, yes, humor of percussion like Stomp. It's "music" like you've never imagined.
- Couldn't be happier!
