  • An absolute must for caregivers

    By AS823UAO9SMQK on 2007-07-27
For those of us who are caregivers, this book is a lifesaver. Before reading this book I was certain that many of the behaviors that my family member exhibits were unique to her. While I often read about Alzheimer's, I never read anything that made me stop and realize that, first, I am not alone, and second, that there are ways that I can handle situations better. This book is full of great suggestions on how to deal with the many behavioral issues that are exhibited by those with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Whenever I have an especially difficult day, I go online to the Alzheimer's page and remind myself how difficult it is for my family member. This book drove home that message, yet more importantly provided me with some tools on how to deal with these issues. I cannot stress enough how much I thought our situation and the behaviors were unique; it is liberating to realize that they are not. As well, understanding why the person exhibits such behaviors makes it much easier to respond correctly.

I wish I could thank the authors personally for this book. I hope they both know that their wisdom, concern and awareness of the Alzheimer patient has made a difference for me, and I am certain has made a difference for many others.

Caregivers -- buy this book, you will find some stress greatly diminished.

    By AYKP5VPU0VX4R on 2007-04-10
This is a excellent book and reference for those learning to deal with Alzheimer. Plenty of resources and ideas of what to look for when caring for someone with this disease. You can get a good idea of what to expect and how to help those suffering with this devastating disease. Easy to understand and read. Can't recommend this book enough.

Well-written, easy to read, and comprehansive..excellent resource! I have already recommended it to others facing a future as a caregiver.

  • Excellent help for hard times

    By A3NDGSF5KHSJKM on 2007-01-11
I mentioned this to a priest who works with hospice, and she told me it was the standard work for families on the topic of dementia.

It really is a very practical, humane, and sensible work. A lot of good ideas, with no perky guarantees that this or that one will work for everyone. A lot of needed reminders that the person isn't acting this way out of malice. A lot of compassion for the feelings, both sad and angry, of the caregiver.

I took this book from the library, read it, and immediately bought a large print edition for my mother.

Even if you aren't the primary caregiver, you need to read this to fully understand what's happening back home with Dad or Mom.

  • Help for the family

    By A3BSJFIKTBD1XN on 2007-04-02
This book has been the single most helpful tool my family has been given to help us help my mother as she progresses with Alzheimer's Disease. While other books have touched on many of the topics in this book, no where else have we found as much practical information on how to avoid confrontations with her; ways to improve her daily living; ideas to keep her involved with us and to provide meaning to her life; questions to ask her doctors; types of resources that are available (depending on your area); what to expect as the disease progresses; and how to help each other as we take on the many different roles needed to provide care for her.

I highly recommend this book to others; in fact, I have purchased multiple copies to share with family members and donate to my local library - that's how helpful and important this book is!

  • THE 36-HOUR DAY continues to be the 'bible' of recommendation for any caregiver whose family member suffers from dementia.
    By A14OJS0VWMOSWO on 2007-02-08
When THE 36-HOUR DAY appeared in its original edition it was unprecedented in its information for families struggling to care for people with Alzheimer Disease and other dementias: now this updated 4th edition in large print includes new details on diagnostic evaluation methods, new medications and research, and new social and legal issues involved, and will find a place not only on health and public library shelves, but in the home shelves of caregivers searching for information. From financial aid and nursing homes to alternatives to treatments and living arrangements, THE 36-HOUR DAY continues to be the 'bible' of recommendation for any caregiver whose family member suffers from dementia.

Describes perfectly the changes taking place in my mother as she developes dementia. Helps me understand what is taking place and it is very helpful to know how other people have dealt with the same situations.
A must read for any one who has a loved one with this disease.

  • Not quite what I expected
    By A2HZIXZYIWREFN on 2008-01-07
I can see how this book would be helpful for some, but to me it was filled with a lot of common sense. If you know nothing at all about dementia, it could be of assistance, but I wasn't wowed by this book at all. If you feel that you are lost and have no idea what to do, you may benefit from this book, but I didn't really benefit that much.

    By A1Q8M4ZFCLF2TC on 2007-07-16
The 36-Hour Day is an excellent book for anyone dealing with Alzheimer's patients. It is hard for me to imagine anyone with the disease reading the book, but family members will benefit tremendously.

  • Lightweight...
    By A1DPZ9U2XN2C9S on 2008-06-26
Very superficial and general information. I've read a lot on this subject since my mom's diagnosis a couple of months ago and I'm frankly puzzled as to why this book is recommended so frequently.

The Alzheimer Assn's website provides more thorough information. It's extremely well written and easy to understand. And free.

  • outstanding for information, application, and inspiration
    By A20J0NBT6FWXXM on 2008-07-27
This book, now in its 4th edition, is absolutely one of the finest books that has been written regarding Alzheimer's Disease and the process of care giving. Full of detail about the disease, this book also takes it a step further, providing very practical information on care giving, making a home / care giving setting a safe place, and, frankly, providing suggestions for periodic care giving to the care giver. Throughout the several editions, I have come to recommend, loan, give, patients and care givers this book perhaps 50 times or more, and, every time I hear the same thing - "what a helpful, fantastic book!". Published by Johns Hopkins and holding a 95% 5 star rating on Amazon, it's unbeatable. it's 600 pages long. that might, at first blush, seem like a lot to read. none of us who give care to others can set aside 10 to 60 hours (depending on your reading speed) right away to read it all and made sense of it all. Take your time. It's not a race to get through it - it's a race to understand the contents - take your time and begin to put into practice an additional suggestion each day. This book is a labor of love and is worth the price, used, new, and way more (oh no - don't tell Johns Hopkins that or they'll start charging us a lot more!!). Best of luck, and be sure to find for yourself a support group in your community or on-line.

  • Everyone Should Read
    By A2O8XHHQI5CBK2 on 2007-10-04
I am so sorry that I did not read this book 5 years ago. It explained why my mom behaves the way that she does. I think that everyone needs to read this because there is not a person alive that does not or will not love someone who has dementia or Alzheimers. It gives medical information that is easy to understand as well as ways to best deal with their loved one. It reassures the caregiver that they need to take care of themselves and it helps them to realize that thier loved one still loves them but is sometimes unable to show it in acceptable ways.

  • A MUST for every CAREGIVER
    By A3QHMX8JH9GX4P on 2007-12-24
For the past 10 years, I have been a full time in-home caregiver for my mother who has dementia. I am not medically trained in any formal way, so this caregiving responsibility has forced me to do a lot of personal research in order for me to advocate properly for her. To that end I've read numerous books and attended seminars on caregiving and dealing with dementia. In my opinion, "The 36-Hour Day" is the gold standard of references for the dementia caregiver. It's one of those books that doesn't claim to have all the answers, but indeed teaches you a lot about dementia and what to expect at various points in the disease. It's not a book that has to be read cover to cover in order to help you, either - heaven knows, full time caregivers don't always have the time to sit and read. But I honestly feel that every person who needs to care for a dementia patient (and that includes home service caregivers, family caregivers and professional, medical caregivers) needs to have a copy of this book for reference. It will be a huge benefit to the caregiver as well as the patient.

  • reference book about dementia and alzheimers
    By AZ5ZDI4T6KEQG on 2007-11-17
I purchased this book because a loved one was recently diagnosed with dementia and it was recommended reading. I would totally recommend this book as a great resource for anyone faced with having a friend or family member with this problem. It gives very understandable information about what this disease is all about and ways to handle your interactions with this person, particularly if you are the caregiver. It's a must if you are the caregiver to help you keep things in perspective, which is very hard to do if you are closely involved with their daily care.

  • Great info for families and caregivers
    By A2P1PCRS1Y1P4X on 2007-12-03
This is a well written, easy to read book. If dementia is touching the life of someone you care about this book can confirm things you may have already seen as well as provide insight on what's to come. Although every person is special, we have so much in common.

  • Excelllent text for first-hand experience
    By A1KPH2JAD3L2KL on 2008-05-24
A good friend recommended the book and she knew what she was talking about. As a young baby-boomer, both my parents are showing signs of dementia and I'm relieved and informed by the comments shared in the text. Things are going much easier now that my whole family is better prepared to handle the impact of this disease. I sent a copy to both my sister and brother in Ohio because they too have aging inlaws that may eventually exhibit periods of dementia and may find a sense of comfort from the knowledge.

  • A must read
    By A2CZVIQOLEMEOA on 2008-08-04
This is an excellent book. It is written in a warm and caring manner which is easy to understand. It is full of information not just for anyone dealing with a dementia patient, but for anybody who is caring for another person, (or who may think at some point they will). It covers subjects which apply to the caring of anyone who is ill and/or elderly, even if it is not dementia. I would recommend this book to anyone, before they are faced with the illness. I wish I'd read it sooner, but better late than never. Absolutely a great book, it should be in every library. I plan to buy 2 copies for my library, I will definitely NOT donate mine. I can't say enough good things about this book.

  • A MUST read for anyone that has an alzheimer family member, or anyone involved in the care of an alzheimer patient!!!!!!
    By AKKL8YQLZSEK1 on 2007-06-11
I can not stress enough just how helpful and informative this book is. My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease 6 years ago. In those 6 years we have seen numerous doctors, taken numerous tests, spoke to many Social Workers, Home Health Aides, etc. NO ONE gave me the advice, information, suggestions, help, etc., anywhere near as well and thorough as "The 36 Hour Day".
I think so highly of this book and recommend it so much; that just last week, I had a meeting with the Director of Nursing, Head Nurse, and Social Worker at the nursing home where my Dad resides. I highly recommended this book and told the Dir. Of Nursing, it should be mandatory reading for anyone working in the facility.
If you have a loved one or are a care taker of someone with Alzheimer Disease---RUN do not walk, to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of this book.

    By AJDLE8A6GE3DI on 2007-11-13
My Grandmother was diagnosed with Progressive supra nuclear palsy and dementia this year. This book came highly recommended and now I know why. It is like my second bible. Whenever she exhibits a new behavior I pull out the book to find out how to handle it. It is an excellent reference tool for anyone dealing with dementia. It has saved me hours of researching and decreased worthless arguements. I suggest it to everyone I know with a loved one in the same situation.
