PSYCHNOTES HELPS EVERYONE DECIPHER JARGON By A2SAY10W1U4J94 on 2005-04-08
REVIEW BY BARBARA LIPKIEN GERSHENBAUM
PsychNotes by Darlene Pedersen is more than a handbook for health care workers. The author says: "Although the intended audience, originally, was students and professionals in a clinical setting, [she] is finding that 'civilians' are very interested in this handbook." She goes on to say that, " ... the attraction may be the ease with which one can find the topics, or perhaps, it's the succint language used to describe disorders. I also include client/family/lay person education and even cover geriatrics ... dementia, depression, and the many conditions that emerge as people age. Now that life expectancy is so much longer than in the past families and loved ones need support and help which I have organized for them. It's a quick reference at the point-of-care. It also in essence summarizes all of psychiatry (adult and geriatric)"
Nonprofessionals (lay persons) who have received a copy, said:
" We devoured the book last night and find it so useful." Pedersen thinks that the geriatric section appeals to a lot of people as well as the sections on dementia. I try to help families by providing some tools for dealing with family members with dementia, depression, loss, grief, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia." She also provides sections on medications and their proper use.
Pedersen says she has gotten great feedback about the way PsychNotes is presented and explains that, "The basic Notes series was not my idea, nor the wipe-free pages, trim size, or tabular format. The wipe-free pages grew out of the need to be especially careful with patient information (HIPAA compliant) so that all personal/confidential information could be essentially deleted after a session and when charting was done."
PsychNotes is an extraordinary guide and throughout Pedersen has provided Clinical Pearls that translate the knowledge to practice. She says, "Information in a vacuum is useless - how does it relate to the individual client to assure good and safe care? Does glaucoma in and of itself matter? Yes, if one needs to prescribe an antipsychotic as glaucoma is a contraindication. Why do you need to know if there is a family history of diabetes when prescribing an antipsychotic? What herbals must you watch out for when taking an antidepressant or over the counter medications? A rash in a patient on anticonvulsants could be life threatening. Very important information."
Darlene Pederson also has a

where you can find many resources for families/clients/patients/anyone interested in or needing information relevant to various disorders.
PsychNotes is a revolutionary handbook that brings together a plethora of topics described in approachable language and form to allow everyone to learn about health concerns.

Psych Notes By A27K9G426BQE57 on 2005-04-18
I highly recommend Psych Notes by Darlene Pederson. It is very complete, concise and accurate. A worthwhile book for both students and seasoned psychiatric nurses as it makes a wonderful quick reference and is very complete. I particularly like the presentation in the Disorders section which addresses signs and symptoms, causes, rule outs, lab tests and interventions. The "cause" section addresses not only the usual and customary "psychosocial" factors but also the pathophysiology.

This pocket guide came in handy when I had to write my care plans for my patients in mental health clinicals. Some of the others wished they had one.

I really like the new 2nd edition of Psych Notes with all the extra drug information and the labs now in one section. The key disorders are all there and I especially like the tables highlighting what I need to know about key disorders. DSM-IV information is very helpful (includes all classifications and codes) as are assessment rating scales such as SMAST, geriatric depression scale, AIMs, and DSM-IV multiaxial tool. I can fill these out in a pinch and erase with an alcohol wipe. Grouping information by tabs makes it easy to locate info easily and quickly. Great quick reference for clinicals and reviewing!
- too much unnecessary info
     By A25GCT5Y05LXW8 on 2008-03-27
I am a PA student and ordered this book for my psychiatry rotation. There is a lot of good info.. but way too much unnecessary info too. There are sections on freudian theroies (like ID and ego), pages on family therapy steps, communication skills and countless pages of blank history and physical exam sheets that you are never going to write on and make the book 2/3 more bulky than it needs to be. The most clinically important pages... classifying personality disorders, DSM classification, diagnosing psychotic disorders, key side effects of common psychotropic drugs should have been the highlight of the book, but is hidden beneath all of the unnecessary information. In the index, I looked up several common terms and disorders seen in psychiatric patients which were not even in the book which should have been. A good book.. but I didn't end up using it a lot because you have to really sift through it to find the important information you're looking for. (However, the DERMNOTES book similar to this book is excellent- it is concise and highlights the main dermatological points that you will need in a clinical situation.)

- Great learning tool
     By A2SA3RAR1OC7BM on 2008-07-03
This is a great pocket guide to take on clinicals at the hospital when you're on Psych floors. It is easy to carry in your pocket and very helpful when you need to look up a psych drug or something related to your patient. I like the fact that you can also write on it with pen and it comes off with alcohol pads. That way I don't have to carry paper pads with me too.

This is a nice pocket size book but the print is just too small in it.There's good information in it and it's very colourful. It's hardwearing. Overall I did not like this book due to the small print size but it has lots of good information.
