Pirate Pete and his parrot love gold. When they hear the Queen has a treasure map, they must have it. For where there is treasure, there is gold. And as Pete says (over and over again): "Where there's gold, I'm a-goin'!" Pete and his parrot steal the map and hit the high seas. As they journey to Mermaid Island, where the treasure lies, they come upon other islands that tempt Pete in his search for gold. On Candy Island, they are sure to find gold cavity fillings; on Sleepy Island, magic gold dust from the Sandman; on Clover Island, a pot of leprechaun gold! But their search is futile: the children on Candy Island brush their teeth! Sleepy Island residents read books to help them sleep! And the leprechaun's pot holds Irish stew! And these aren't their only problems. Whose ship is that on the horizon, giving chase? This funny and whimsical book will have both children and adults giggling as Pete and crew make their way toward Mermaid Island. This book is pure gold!

  • A Perfect Read for Swashbucklers Young and Old!

    By AWQ6MRV3UK6KG on 2002-08-15
Shiver me timbers! This be as fine a book as I've seen in many a year. My three year old daughter loves this book almost as much as I do. The story is witty, arch enough for a grown-up, but simple enough for children from 3-30 to love. And the gorgeous illustrations - taking Pirate Pete and his harried parrot from Candy Island to Dragon Island, to the treasure bearing Mermaid Island are an utter delight. This is a rarity in children's books - a tale that is as fun for adults as it is for kids, and one which stands the test of multiple (often nightly) readings. Arrr! Be quick with your pen Kim and Doug - there be gold in them thar pages!

  • Its all about the treasure

I enjoy this pirate tale as much as my son enjoys having me read it to him every night. The story is humerous and full of suprises with more text in it's 40 pages than your average picturebook. The illustrations are wonderful, colorful, and inspiring. Pirate Pete and his poor parrot travel from Candy Island, to Dragon Island, to Mermaid Island looking for treasure to plunder. The way the art is presented is witty and different. The suprise ending is a big hit with kids. Buy this one if you like pirate tales for kids, you won't regret it.

  • YAR! This is a blast of a book, matey!

My sons love pirates, so I've started a pirate book collection. PIRATE PETE is their favorite book; it's easy for them to follow along, and its refrain is a blast. The story has a great twist to the ending, which made it all the more fun. The illustrations are packed with all sorts of hidden things, which young readers will get a kick out of. I highly recommend this book to any parent who wants a treasure of a book for their little mateys!

  • A little disappointing

    By A2FQDIQY7VY137 on 2006-02-03
I bought this book for my 4-year-old son who loves pirates. Although the illustrations are beautiful and it is a cute story it just did not grab his attention. And he, uncharacteristically, was frightened by the fire-breathing dragon. I would recommend "How I Became a Pirate" (which has a better story line) over this book to any pirate-lovers.

  • A rarity in children's books!

Here's a children's book with all the good stuff: adventuresome story, endearing characters, and elegant, timeless illustrations. The "spy-glass" paintings put you right into the story! Very clever, and my kids love it. My youngest, a beginning reader, follows along with his big brothers with the refrain, "Where there's gold, I'm a goin'!" A truly fine book!

My 3 year old daughter loved the pictures, but it drags out the story so much that I have to abreviate it. My 6 year old son never enjoyed it.

This is a great book! My 6 year old recieved his book in May of 2002 and he knows this book by heart. My son is very involved with pirates and this hits the spot with great adventure that any 6 year old would enjoy. We need more great pirate books, with great illustration from Doug and Kim Kennedy. Highly recommend this book!!

  • A humorous picturebook about a pirate and his parrot
    By A14OJS0VWMOSWO on 2002-06-08
Pirate Pete is the engaging, humorous picturebook about a pirate and his parrot determined to plunder golden treasure. Yet one disaster after another befalls them on their journey, and a surprise is waiting in store at the end! A simple and delightful story by Kim Kennedy, Pirate Pete features Doug Kennedy's vividly colorful and jaunty artwork. Recommended for family, school, and public library children's picturebook collections.

My son (3 years old) loves this book. It also helped me to convince him that toothbrushin' is cool because pirates do it! Go and get this wonderful book!

  • Timeless treasure!
    By A1C9Y4D0Z2CYT2 on 2002-09-02
Pirate Pete is absolutely wonderful! My kids love to read it over and over. Pirate Pete's foiled plans and island adventures make him just as lovable as the Kennedy's darling Mr. Bumble. Very funny and beautifully illustrated, Pirate Pete will quickly become a family treasure!
