Colorful pictures and simple rhyming texts help children guess what's peeking through the die-cut windows in these two fun board books. The anticipation of what's hiding on the next page and th bright, engaging illustrations will keep youngsters guessing and giggling all the way to the suprise endings.

Nina Laden's illustrations in this simple, rhyming board book are truly magical. The format is straightforward: on alternating two-page spreads, the words "Peek a" are repeated, opposite an illustrated page with a die-cut hole, behind which lurks a cow ("MOO!"), a green ghost ("BOO!"), and a mirror (you guessed it, "YOU!"). The youngest readers will delight in trying to guess who--or what--is peeking through the window, and can easily grip the baby-fist-size holes to turn the pages for the answers. The picture of the "ZOO!" is fabulous. Through the hole, all that can be seen is a wild pattern of colors, stripes, and spots. Turn the page, and find a wild kingdom of animals, one in front of the other: peacock, zebra, penguin, cheetah, elephant, and more. Ready for more peekaboo fun? Try Nina Laden's Ready, Set, Go! . • An instant favorite!

I got this book as a gift for my daughter who was 8 months old at the time. From the first time we read it she was hooked! For the last month, we have read this book daily at least 15 times! She loves turning the pages and the rhyming really keeps her attention! The awesome thing is the she knows to turn the page after the rhyming word! So we dont have random page flipping! She loves the mirror at the end and looks into the peek a boo window so she can see her eyes then when we reveal the full mirror she gives herself a kiss! I love this book because my daughter can't get enough of it! I feel sorry for the rest of my book collection but I figure they will get their due attention in time.

  • Infantile Book

    By A14K1DM5JGVLGP on 2007-06-13
This book is for really young babies who respond to bold graphics and colors. It's very short and very basic, containing 3-word, repetitive phrasology (Peek-a-Moo, Peek-a-Boo, Peek-a-Zoo, Peek-a choo choo, Peek-a-You - there, now you've read it.)

IMO it will bore most older babies, because it lacks even basic concept development or rudimentary story progression. To my 13 month old it may as well be a drink coaster. (In fact the book is about the same size as a large coaster, maybe that's what I will use it for.)

Young children enjoy books that have pages to open and repeating punchlines. Peek-A-Who has both. It's also thankfully short for parents who have to read the book the large number of times.

My son LOVES this book!! He giggles with anticipation with each page. Very cute book.

  • The Best Book we have!

    By on 2003-03-22
My son has loved this book since we started reading to him at 3 or so months. He has learned to turn the pages (and since the text is so short, I can read it before he turns!) He loves the bright simple pictures and especially the mirror at the end. He always kisses himself, it is SO cute. Course, now he kisses anytime he sees his reflection. This book is wonderful for the simple text and great pictures and the predictablity (a great pre-reading skill!) Our son is 10 months and will sit and "read" it to himself now! A must have for any child's nursery.

My 18 month old loves to play "Peek-a-boo", and if anything saying "Peekachoo, peekamoo, peekazoo, etc." was confusing. Will stick with the pop up books for now-they always bring a smile to his face!

  • We love playing peekaboo

Peek-a-who is one of my 13 month old baby's favorite books. She wants to read it over and over again. she loves lifting up the tabs and finding all the hidden things.

  • Peek-a-WOW!
    By on 2001-03-20
Our 6-month-old daughter squeals in delight every single time we read this book, and at every "Peek a..." page. It was her first book at 3 months, and is still top of her pop chart. We carry it around with us, not just for entertainment & distraction value but to use the mirror to check out how our baby's doing when she's in the backpack. Practical, fun, and beautiful -- what more could you want from a book?

  • Made our son laugh out loud!
    By A1FJGOPLDVP4RI on 2003-01-20
I bought this book for my 15 mo. old son solely on the reviews I read here on Amazon, I had never seen it before. It is a huge hit in our house. It is the first book EVER to make our son laugh out loud! It is amazing, he actually chuckles at the Peek a Boo & Peek a You pages. It's a very simple book overall and very short, but obviously perfect in it's delivery. I highly recommend it.

  • Only book my 8-month-old picks from her pile
    By A3TNIGVJFXA9KB on 2004-05-26
My daughter Giana loves to read along with this book! She's acquired about 50 books so far - thanks to her mother's love of reading and some very generous friends - but this book is the one she always grabs. The pages are colorful and easy for her to help turn, the rhyming is cute, and apparently the taste is great, too, because she often ends up using it as a teether...

  • My daughter's favorite book!
    By A1G6UB5F76QGF8 on 2005-08-16
My daughter has tons of books, but this is by far her favorite. She can't get enough of it. She has enjoyed it since I bought it for her when she was three months old. When she was just learning to turn pages, these were easier for her because of the hole in the middle.

She never tires of this book. It's a cute one!

  • You'll always be glad you bought this book
    By A29A05GRKODCWD on 2005-12-11
Peek-A-Who is a memorable infant to toddler book that has a fun element of surprise. The rhymes are cute without being sappy and the simplistic language (though not babyish) is easily understood by little ones, and the book is short enough to hold their interest. It's also very colorful, offering visual stimulation. The simple rhymes lay the foundation for learning phonics. Great book - worth buying!

  • wonderful little book to "grow up" with
    By AT414SEZSELKV on 2005-12-28
This was my daughter's "first" favorite book. She loved it as an infant, and as she started to talk, she recited the words for each page. Now that she's 2 1/2, she loves to "read" it to her 8 month old cousin. It helps ease the frustration she feels at no longer being the baby and the center of attention. I would highly recommend this book to any parent of young children. I personally keep a few copies in the closet; it's a standard part of my baby shower gift packet!

  • We love it!
    By A1TVXLTHW1GFBO on 2006-12-09
My 7 month old loves this book. We received it as a gift from our pediatrician's office and he's loved it from the moment he saw it. He loves the anticipation of what's coming up and it's easy enough that my 4yo can "read" it to him and get in on the fun. I'm buying a copy of it to give to my 9 month old nephew as part of his Christmas gift this year. Two thumbs up from our house!!

  • My Son Loves this book
    By on 2001-09-18
My son got this book from Grandma when he was about 9mos old, he's now just over a year and it's still his favorite. With simple rhymes and colorful illustrations Nina Laden has created one of the best books available for a small child. If you have a child under 2, you NEED this book.

  • the owl is just the start
    By A1THGAZTUFKXG6 on 2001-10-25
A very charming book; fun artwork to go along with the guessing game on each page. My 9-month-old is just starting to stick his hand through the cut-out areas and, although he isn't guessing what the word on each page will be, he does laugh at each successive "peek-a-who/moo/boo/zoo/choo-choo/you." Making the appropriate sounds to match each word also gets him laughing. And yes, the mirror is a favorite--a great concept at the end of the book. This is a well-designed first book for a baby.

  • The best first book for infants, bar none
    By on 2002-01-29
High praise, I know, but Peek-a-Who had both of my daughters completely enraptured by the age of 4 months. The simple, bright words and the bold, contrasting pictures really speak to babies. It's a joy to hold an infant on your lap and watch her face light up to "Peek-a...peek-a...peek-a MOO!" We're getting a second copy because our 22-month old loved (and chewed) this favorite to bits when she was a baby. Now she "reads" the whole book perfectly to her baby sister!

  • Perfect for a beginner "reader"!
    By A3OQ57VHACY0GU on 2004-03-30
This is our 11 month old's favorite book! The bright pictures and the simple fun text really grab her attention when many other books have too many words per page or pictures that are too complex. She loves to help turn the pages and this one seems particularly easy for her to grab each page. We think this is perfect for when you are just beginning to read to your little one. It helps teach both parents and baby the joys of storytime.

  • Peek a ... YOU!
    By A5NDMXNJC0MT8 on 2006-11-02
This has been the favorite book for my 11 month old for the last three months ... he actually tenses and trembles with excitement when we say "Peek A..." in anticipation of turning the page. If he's in a good mood, he also gives kisses to all the pages -- especially the baby in the mirror on the last page!! Great book!!

  • My daughter likes it!
    By A18SLSH5HMKLMF on 2003-01-11
Very simple and easy to read. Attractive pictures and simple short sentences on each page, which are very suitable for toddlers. My 14 months daughter likes it (I bought it when she was about 8 months). She cannot wait to flip to the last page (a surprise there). The reason that I did not give it 5 stars is that I like the book 'Ready Set Go' (from same author) even more.

  • A favorite!

My two children love this book. We have fun making noises that go along with the words and it's been a favorite book for four years now! A good investment.

  • Peek-a Who?
    By A3KDNRRDNE1DZY on 2004-11-06
We believe babies recognize some voices even before they are born, but in our earliest interactions with them we love to catch their eyes. "Peek-a Who?" by Nina Laden captures all the joy of this simple game with its mixture of familiarity and surprise. A hole cut in a leafy thicket picture on the board book's cover reveals an owl's eyes peering out setting up the rhyming question and answer begun by the title. Turn aside the cover to find the Owl saying, "Peek-a who?" Turn the page and on the left it says "Peek a" in large yellow type amidst a blue background. On the right is a black and white pattern with a center cutout revealing a matching pattern that invites turning to discover who?-a cow looking at you. The same "Peek a" can be seen through the cutout and "MOO! jumps out below in matching yellow on a purple background setting off the black and white of the cow on the right. Turn the page again to find a green typeface "Peek a" centers on a purple background on the left as the same green on the right has a pattern of black and white eyes matched through another cutout that draws us on to turn and find--a green ghost looking at you saying "Peek a BOO!". This well thought out and carefully designed book makes each part work together to the reader's enjoyment. The scale of the book is small but the type is large, the simulated woodcut illustrations are clear and simple with bold bright contrasting colors. The game's pattern is reinforced by familiar elements introducing surprising elements that become familiar. The whole works together to set up "Peek a " as an invitation to enjoy "reading" together.

  • Laden fan
    By A2QFS4QSMYETU6 on 2004-12-17
We own "Grow Up", "Ready, Set, Go" and "Roberto, the Insect Architect" also written by Laden, and we LOVE them all. As we turn each page, our boys hopefully anticipate what creative and fun illustration they'll see next. The books read so fluidly and easily that my little boys (1,3,5 yrs old) memorize the words and rhyme along with us as we read them. We have given these books as gifts every year for Christmas and birthdays and the recipients have equally enjoyed them. I typically recycle books(out with the old and in with the new) but these are in our collection to stay.

  • Loves this Book

My daughter absolutely loves this book. She has learned to hoot like an owl, moo like a cow and boo like a ghost. :) My niece also likes it - so much that I bought her one for Christmas. It's their absolute favorite book.

  • A Favorite
    By AF3UQXM85RUQK on 2007-01-04
my oldest son got this book when he was just a baby and he loved it for the longest time. He now loves to "read" it to his baby brother. A great play on one of babies favorite games - peek a boo.

  • What a HIT!
    By A2DU0ECXFM6J42 on 2002-04-03
When I bought this book for my twins, I never thought it would be such a big hit. IT IS A HUGE HIT. The girls fight over this book and pick this book out of their pretty large library every morning for mommy to read to them. They always crack up at the peekazoo page and love the mirror at the end. This is a wonderful book.

I also bought the "Ready Set Go!" book by Nina Laden, which is an equally big hit with my children. The flower at the end is what they find fascinating!

  • WONDERFUL FANTASTIC GREAT A MUST
    By A32JNGAAMGXL23 on 2003-05-27
My son loves this book .... It is short and sweet. I read this every day at his request!!! My son ADORES books. He could read all day instead of playing with any toy. ... It's a hit in our household and I'm sure your child will be delighted with the clever layout, cute pictures and wonderful fun you and your child will have reading this together. A great book for bonding with your youngster!!!

  • Peek-A-Who
    By on 2003-07-30
Our son is 10 months old and absolutely loves this book. He brings it to one of us on a daily basis to read to him. He laughs out loud as we turn the pages, and he has learned to kiss "the baby" at the end of the book!

  • An excellent children's book!
    By on 2004-01-02
This is a WONDERFUL book to read with your child. My 9 month old loves the bright, vivid pictures and rhyming lines. He eagerly waits for me to turn the page and giggles at the images. A terrific, interactive book for any child that loves the game of peek-a-boo! I highly recommend Nina Laden's other book, "Ready, Set, Go!" too!

  • My son loves this book
    By A3PALD53V53V1U on 2004-07-27
This is one of my 16 month old son's top three favorite books. When I ask him to pick out a book to read he always chooses this one, along with Where is Baby's Belly Button and Opposites with Oswald. He thinks it is so funny and he loves to read along.
