You are what you (dont) eat By A3LS6OJMQ9ME6K on 2000-10-05
Fasting cleanses, renews and rejuvenates (it will even cut your annual food bill ). The Miracle of Fasting is more than an abstention book; it is a guide to a new healthy lifestyle. For coverage, click on Table of Contents in the left-hand column of this page. Do not be confused by the low price on this book. Health Science prints in such large quantities, they can afford to keep their prices low. This is a very popular book. Forty-Seventh edition, now enlarged and revised. Paul Bragg started the health food movement over eighty-eight years ago. His Daughter, the Amazing Patricia Bragg, is accelerating their tradition of promoting the healthy lifestyle. She publishes a number of health-nutrition books and markets her own brand of apple cider vinegar, olive oil and aminos. See her picture on the bottles. I have known Health Science and Patricia Bragg and have followed her healthy lifestyle program for over 20 years. As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I highly recommend Health Science books to anyone not tired of living. The best book! By A1HY765ZWHTT5M on 1999-07-21
I think this is one of my most treasured books. I had a book written by Bragg about 20 years ago that became so ragged and torn that evenutally someone pitched it out thinking it was junk. I was so delighted to see this book on Amazon.com and am thrilled to have a copy. I'm going to purchase another copy as a back-up in case it goes out of print. It is kind of a simple book in both its typeface changes and the way it has poems and drawings right next to text. You can really tell it's a family written book. This truly is a super book on fasting. I got much encouragement from it and I never felt the authors "Brag" about themselves unless you count constantly talking about their good health as bragging. That's what I WANT to hear! You want to know that the authors and their clients are in super shape! I love it that Paul Bragg died at like 97 in a surfing accident (!)-to me that says a LOT about how this book will help you gain good health in your 30's, 40's etc. The back cover has some great endorsements by Clint Eastwood, Jack LaLanne (A super endorsement I think), and the authors of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" and "Chicken Soup For the Soul". Personally I love it that the Braggs message has been so broadly accepted for so many decades that they don't feel the need to slick up their book and make it more "high tech". Please try this book I think you'll be so pleased. They make you feel like you can do anything. You can't help but think "Hey, I'm only 40-if HE can do it so can I".
Paul Bragg is the Man By A2VJ4KMNR8FLF on 1999-06-21
After reading the last review, I had to speak up on Paul Bragg's behalf. I have spent several years now researching health and healthy living and I have come to the conclusion that this is the only book one needs for vibrant health. It covers not only proper fasting, proper diet, and proper exercise, but also proper breathing, proper posture, proper rest, and proper thinking. Dr. Bragg was writing about healthy living long before anyone else in this country was. His work has stood the test of time and the more science learns, the more it corroborates his work. More importantly, his own life is the most compelling proof of his work. Dr. Bragg died at 96. Unlike most 96 year-olds, who languish in rest homes, Dr. Bragg died in a surfing accident. After the autopsy, doctors said he had the body of an 18 year-old. Don't let the exhortative writing style fool you. This book is as scientifically rigorous as any you will find.
I consider this book to be the "bible" on fasting By on 1999-09-06
I have not been able to stop reading this book as it is so encouraging to know that we can possibly live a long life almost exclusively free of disease just by living and eating healthily and obeying God's natural laws. I never new how powerful the body is in healing and cleansing itself until I purchased this book. I never want to set my feet in another physician's office just to be given a prescription for medicine. It's too bad that most physicians today haven't been trained to help their patients with nutrition. There isn't hardly a disease or sickness that can't be cured by fasting, praying, exercising, drinking pure water, deep breathing and fresh air and sunshine. A book that everyone should have.
The only diet & nutrition book you'll ever need By AVL2D1YHRCWZ5 on 2004-04-18
I really enjoyed the simplicity of this book. Many other books on diet and nutrition are too scientific and somewhat difficult to absorb. This one is plain and simple. I like the fact that the topics are repeated throughout the book. By the time you read the whole thing you have a good understanding of how to live a healthy lifestyle. It's really not difficult. This is a good book even if you choose not to fast. I became a vegetarian after reading this book and fasting made the transition much easier. I no longer crave junk food or meat.
- Can starving be good for you?
     By A3V1G8E1GE9HD2 on 2001-12-09
Can starving be good for you? Your mother will probably tell you, "oh darling, what is it you ate today, why don't you come home for dinner...", yet read on.I read this book in Russian translation, back when I was 20. That was in 1984, Moscow, Russia. After I read it, I regularly fasted, 36 hours every Friday or Saturday, and did a few 3-day sessions. After 4-5 years, I stopped regular fasting, and now am looking to start again. The book will tell you about some of the wonderful effects of fasting, and that it must be done with care. You may feel bad on your first tries, and if you feel really bad, don't be a hero: bail out. Try again when you can. Most importantly, don't eat anything heavy (meat, bread, etc.) for a day or two before, and then after the fasting session. Steamed vegetables work best for me. The effects of fasting when done properly (and it's not difficult), are: improved senses (hearing, sight, touch, taste), peace of mind and calmness, sense of humor (yeah baby!), disappearance of worries, improved confidence, sense of purpose in life. Your skin will get smoother and tighter, your eyes - clearer and brighter, teeth - whiter, your energy level will shoot through the roof. You will feel way better about yourself, and you will find that more people are getting attracted to you and staring at you in public places. And that's just the side effects of what I guess you could call - I don't know - happiness? This isn't of course a universal answer to all problems. It's just one of the possible ways, one of the steps, but very effective, very powerful, if not the most effective out there. It helped me, big time, to become a champion of then-USSR (remember USSR?) in robotic break-dance, for several years in a row. Sounds too good to be true? Try it, and do it regularly. Can't promise you a break-dance championship, but other good things will surely come your way. A.
- The Miracle of fasting!
     By A1VT18MZM6EE5P on 2001-04-24
I have read many books on fasting but none as good as this one, Not only does Paul Bragg take a stand for his faith he tells it like it is! The challenge I have always had with authors, is one simple fact...they rarely are an example of practice what they preach! This is the exact opposite of the Bragg family and they do it well! I believe that if you are challenged in any area, spirit mind or body, that you must take the advice of Paul & Patricia Bragg to heart. I accomplished a 70-day juice fast four years ago and thought I had all the answers! It wasn't till I took an afternoon to digest (no pun intended) the truthful and loving words of this book that I regained that faith. I started my first 3 day "true" water fast the next day. On another note...I was shocked at the "great" price of this book and believe every home should skip one trip to the fast food joint and use the money more wisely... GO FOR IT...I did!!!
- Not for the Faint at Heart..
     By A1CDCV6B0XM5SP on 2002-11-16
I was introduced to the Bragg philosophy for Healthy Lifestyle many years ago in California, in the mid-80's. But it seems that founder Paul Bragg had been influencing thousands with his addictive crusade style of campaigning for justice in the world of food processing and chemical additives long before I was born! The work is now carried on his daughter, Patricia. Yes, the Bragg Philosophy comes across as a hard sell. It has to! Why? Because so many of us have been born and raised in a marketing environment tainted by years of commercial success which comes at the expense of the consumer. Sugar-sweet desserts are held in high esteem as tokens of affection and as a reward or treat. The Braggs advocate treating ourselves to the wholesome goodness of natural foods, but only after, and I repeat: ONLY AFTER the body has been given a solid cleansing - flushing out the toxins accumulated through years of food abuse. The straight talk and up-front attacks at the folly of mass marketing (note especially the section on Apple Cider Vinegar) are not pleasant to hear, and most of us need to be shaken quite hard to get us to come down from our tree! We have literally been brainwashed through no fault of our own and need to rediscover, like a lost art - the miracle of selecting, combining, and eating unadulterated foods in their most natural form. For those of you not keen on testimony and heresay, each and every claim is substantiated with scientific proof, the Bragg style underwrites every instance of recommendation with useful and direct evidence; hard facts such as chemical composition and calorie charts; statistics and the like- not to mention the excellent recipes! There is enough information in the charts alone to satisfy beyond the shadow of a doubt the validity of the enticing benefits, which are rightfully ours as human beings: Physical, Mental and Spiritual Rejuvination Sad to say, like many who won't reach out for help until they reach Rock-bottom (think of the movie 'Less Than Zero', about drug addiction)... I write this in high spirits, for this is the seventh day of a week-long cleansing fast, and I feel like celebrating with the world!... Luckily, the Bragg philosophy endures... My thanks to Patricia for carrying the torch completely around the world. Long live the Bragg philosophy, long live Patricia, and long live those who eat right, which should be everyone on the planet.
- This is the one of the best books on Fasting
     By A23D8ZZ60GTS3G on 2002-11-18
I have had my book since 1996, and I have lived its principles for the past 6 years. This is a wonderful book. I love it. Paul Bragg was one of the great pioneers of fasting and it is because of him and his daughter Patricia Bragg that understand the "miracle of fasting" as I know it today. This book is a necessity. If you do not have a copy you should quickly get a copy, because it teaches you the basic fundamentals for a healthy lifestyle. I am glad that I have a copy of this book -- I am carded all the time and people sometimes mistake me for being a senior in high school or college. I know that it has a lot to do with me following the laws of God in the area of health and nutrition. This is one of the best books on Fasting that I have every read. It is not only good for the individual who desires to make lifestyle changes, but it is great for the whole family.
- The Miracle of Fasting
     By AIY1YI6LEJK2K on 2003-05-06
I have been following Paul Bragg since 1969. His books were the first I read on health. It changed my life. I was 24 years old when I got into health foods.I stopped smoking and started eating right. I would fast once a week. I am so greatful for the knowledge he has given us all.I used to go see him at his lectures. I was blessed to be able to see him in person. I have been in good health since I was 24 years old and I am in controll of my own body because of the knowledge that was given to me by Paul Bragg. God bless him..... Jo :>)
- Jack LaLanne is Bragg's most famous student
     By A26V35R4NLJTEO on 2003-10-14
A google search for "Paul Bragg" and "Jack LaLanne" reveals Jack LaLanne was 15 years old when he first heard Bragg speak. Now in his 80s, people say Jack LaLanne looks and acts 50ish. Paul Bragg lived to 95, but didn't die of old age, he died body surfing in the ocean of all things. I've read several books on fasting and this is without a doubt the best one. If you've got the willpower to follow through on Bragg's instructions you can feel great and dramatically improve your health and extend your life.
- not alot of information, tons of repeating
     By A3TNHCPKIS9EPT on 2006-05-16
This book should only be about 10 pages for the amount of information in it. The information is good but if you buy the companion cookbook, almost none of the recipes follow the diet they prescribe. There are recipes for liver in their cookbook! That's one of the most toxic foods, so basically it appears as if they just want to make money off of you(they're certainly not altruistic health crusaders). And Paul Bragg is dead but they don't mention how he died or how old he was(certainly not 120 as promised), I read somewhere it was in a body surfing accident, but I'm skeptical. Don't buy this book, borrow it from the library because clearly they just want to make lots of money off of you buy trying to lure you in with their promises of good health that their cook book does not support, and all the information you need is on their website.
- Full of repetition of same things again and again
     By on 2002-04-29
This book is not much about how to fast. This is more about why to fast. And it will tell you hundreds of times why to fast. It will tell you to use apple cider vinegar an equal number of times. It is so much repetitive that I had to put the book down every time I read more than 40 pages at a stretch. No doubt, it has some very good pieces of information. But that information needs to be extracted from the book. With its very big font, it becomes very annoying to read similar sentences presenting more or less the same ideas again and again. I think it would be a much better book if the matter put into over 250 pages is presented in about 75 pages. It is impressive that Mr. Brag has treated many people.... but this book is full of bragging about how he treated people. And the treatment of same person is mentioned several times. It becomes irritating after a while.
- Nice man but shame about the content
     By on 2001-02-16
I'm really sorry to say this because it does seem that Mr Bragg has been an inspiration to so many people, but the content of this book could indeed have been put into about half a dozen pages. There is so much padding and waffle. I bought this hoping to get a step-by-step approach to the subject, some well-organised practical advice and perhaps some scientific insights, but I now know I should look elsewhere.
- Gee! That makes sense Paul. I believe I will follow it!
     By A1ZPOQQCZT29EZ on 2000-06-10
This book should be the top 5 in any health library. It not only explains in clear form how to fast(actions)and why to fast(put yourself closer to god) but also is a huge motivator during the spiritual process. If one feels discomfort and hunger during a fast, pick up this book and read it again. It will get you through it. If you are questioning the credibility of the authors then consider this before you spend your "hard earned" money, equivelent to a movie or bottle of liquor. This is not quackery! Both authors have Ph.D and N.D. degrees relating to biochemistry, nutrition, physiotherapy, psychology etc. Trust me, you will not know this info while reading it though. This book is not boring. It is understandable by all who speak english. I have given 2 copies of it away already and see many more in the future. Thanks God. Corey
- Ahead of their time in health field
     By on 1999-07-01
I largely owe forty extra years of life--not exisitng--to the writings of Paul Bragg and his daughter Patricia. Now in my sevenites I am looking to the decades. In my thirties I was given from a few weeks to a few months to live as the result of failing health. Paul and Patricia Bragg's teachings changed everything. Would that there were more like them. - Bragg Healthy Lifestyle is the real deal
     By A1DIFL0333QPEB on 2001-07-28
I'm a very big fan of how easily Patricia Bragg can communicate with the reader. Throughout this entire book, she finds subtle ways of telling us how bad stress, meats, bad water, and other toxic things are bad for us. She goes into detail on virtually every one of these toxic things. This book is outlined nicely, although the ideas are somewhat scatterbrained. It's nice though, because it jumps from one idea to the next, so you don't get bored about reading the same kind of topic over and over. It'll go from something like how Conrad Hilton overcame disease, to how fasting rejuvinates the mind, body, and soul, back to how we need to keep our 'pipes clean'. I would recommend this book to everyone who values their health in any way.

- Steady Diet of Nothing
     By on 2001-02-08
When I say 'steady diet of nothing' I am not talking fugazi, but of a tenant of Paul Bragg's excellent philosophy of total physical, mental, and spiritual rejuvenation as is attained through the scientific fasting regimen outlined here. The most difficult thing in a fasting (healing/health) program is personal discipline. Paul Bragg's shining example of robust health and wisdom will inspire you to fast regardless of the western world's constant propaganda and widespread desire to always stuff one's face with food and garbage. The body, mind and spirit need a break once in awhile to slow down their processes and cleanse out the rut accumultaed by poor diets, stress, and the abusive modern pace of living. Many will doubt Braggs words- All as I can say is I feel sorry for them in the great philosophy and healing regimen they will never attain in their ignorance. I had to add that statement not out of any sense of righteousness but because something so simple, free and valuable as fasting for healing and higher health is so grossly misunderstood and misinterpreted by modern man, who generally lack experience in the matter. This program is for you and your health- its not going to hurt you. Paul Bragg was a crusader of physical survival and longetivity, not of physical destruction. Please see Ann Wigomnre's "Hippocrates Diet" to compliment your fasting program for the highest possible health attainable in the world. This is not a fad diet plan, this is reality!

- "The Best of The Best"
     By A1ONXA0BCWS0AA on 2006-04-24
The entire series of Bragg books and products will save your life! Jack LaLanne states; "he would have been dead at age 16 if he had not attended The Braggs Crusade". He is a product today at age 90, of how living the principes of Patricia Bragg and Paul Bragg, M.D. Ph.D is mere proof. Must read the entire series, if you want to feel good and stay forever young.
- Alot Of Talk - But So Little Said !
     By on 1999-03-07
Well I saw the other 5 star rating and yes I said great ! When the book came I jumped on in, the more I read the more I started to wonder when they start to take about FASTING after all that is what the book is about ! Well The total text on fasting in this book should have been formatted to a nice 10 page booklet that still would have allowed the Braggs to do the endless bragging this book is FULL of ! To Me This Book Was A Waste Of Time And Money ! It's Wasn't My First Book On Fasting and As For The Braggs - Let your EGO GO !
- One of the most excellent fasting resources available!
     By on 1998-11-05
I purchased this book a few years ago and couldn't put it down. Paul explains the details of a fast, what to expect, how to prepare for one, what the physical and spiritual benefits are, etc. The reading is both entertaining and extremely informative. One of the best books on fasting I've ever read! It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in starting a fast.
- An "Infomercial" and condescending
     By on 2000-11-12
The only thing that makes this book a step above an infomercial is that you have to read it! The authors also seemed to talk down to the readers, assuming we wouldn't understand unless they put it in the simplest of terms. I've seen better essays (grammatically) from first year college students -- I kept getting thrown off with all the sentence fragments and had a hard time figuring out where the authors were going with those fragments. The content did interest me, and I think there were many valid points. I just didn't like the presentation.
- Blah ....Blah...Blah
     By A378BNOX3QOVYB on 2002-07-18
I bought this book a while back , mainly to be a companion to Paul's earlier book. Ok it was thicker and newer. And I was disappointed. the older version written by Paul Bragg is much better. It gets right to the point and Paul tells of his own fasting stories and those of others. Bottom line is the older ,smaller and maybe cheaper version is much better. It may be had to find However.
- Interesting read.. alot of information, and facts on food.
     By A24R2B0JLKR02A on 2005-02-16
This is a good book, i enjoyed reading it because it contains ALOT of information, on what foods really do to the human body, and what mans ideal foods are. I also liked that it contained quotes from important historic people such as hippocrates and jesus. This book is definately worth reading, it makes you think with hard hitting statements that hit home. I have changed alot of my eating habbits due to this book. a couple of things though, i found it sometimes repetitive, i own another braggs book called 'healthy living to 120' proberly half of the things in that book are also mentioned in this book. if you want a book on fasting this is great for giving you lots of information you'll need, but if you want a book that mentions fasting but isn't soley based on that, but is about food and healthy living in general try, 'healthy living to 120'
one statement that made me think was this: (from the book)
"only two things can kill us, sickness or accident.
think about that, i have and i can't think of anything else that can kill us, I think murder maybe, or natural disaster but i think that would fall under the accident catagory because it isn't a sickness..
- This book changed my life
     By A3RJ32MUW5FQRT on 2001-06-08
This book changed my life. From my first experience with the weekly fast to my most recent three day fast, I have enjoyed a vitality that I never knew. What a blessing the information in this book provides. Costs nothing, you lose weight and your body thanks you for giving it time to heal itself. I have shared it with many friends and their experiences have been similar. Thank you Patricia Bragg.
- Almost impossible to find a better book...
     By ABPQJM4RCCN0G on 2006-03-09
This book is amazing. Paul Bragg is amazing. Everyone who hasn't read this book should read it immediately. It is for everyone. It will open your eyes to the truth -- we are responsible for our own health. We are not victims. If we're sick, it's our fault. It's not because there is some kind of virus or popular disease that is going around. We decide what goes into our bodies. We decide to eat things that are just not for us, like dead animals and bleached breads.
If you're sick of feeling sick, read this book! If you've ever had a headache, read this book!
My family's life has been strongly influenced by Bragg's books. My mother was very sick from a disease that could not be cured, or so said the doctors. She was allergic to medicine. After reading this book and eliminating "foods" like meat, eggs, almost all dairy, and baked foods, our family was on the way to healthy living. I was 4 years old at that time and haven't been to the doctor since then, except for yearly check-ups and one incident in which I faked a fever in order to skip a test (the doctor believed it). Because of the unbelievable complete recovery of my mother, and excellent overall health of our entire family, we too have begun influencing others and setting an example. Today I am a happy raw foodist. I eat 100% raw plant food. I love it and the raw food diet is the closest to natural living.
- Very motivating!
     By AY6TVIZFCGTLA on 1999-03-03
I have read this book numerous times. It is quite inspirational to me and helps me to get psyched up for a fast. There is a lot of practical information here to help even the most inexperienced faster to understand the process of fasting, what to expect, and why. I would recommend this book to anyone in search of better health.
- LIke all Bragg books
