This is THE book on model railroad scenery By on 1998-08-26
Dave takes you through the whole gamut of scenicing, using his 'water soluble' method, which is easy and very realistic. I've used it and it produces a great effect. Works well with the Woodland Scenery line of products.
Excellent hands on book By A2ZJDGVJ45AR5W on 2006-09-16
I have owned this book for several years and refer to it often. It is not just for model railroaders. It is perfect for anyone that wants to build dioramas of any type that look realistic. I build fantasy dioramas of castles, knights, dungeons etc. and this book is perfectly suited for that.
One of the best things about the book is that it is oversized which makes it comfortable to handle while building and allows for lots of pics and info on one page which is very helpful in this type of hobby and it covers all the major bases of diorama building from the landscape shell to waterscenes.
One of the best things about this book, which few people consider, is that it is all about "water soluble techniques". Which means the easier to master techniques and the safer techniques.(no toxic chemicals or fumes)which is important especially if you have children in your household.
This book taught me how to make fantasy scenery -Highly recommended. This is the book to get if you only get 1 of this type.
Makes Adding Scenery a Fun Project! By A1Z16630QMH8Q6 on 2003-03-20
Dave Frary makes adding scenery to your model railroad a fun project. You'll find simple ways to perform this and often uses materials found in or around your home. This book is a must for modelers. Highly recommended.
Super book By on 2001-08-22
This is THE book for any type of model scenery even though its main focus is model railroading. I've used the techniques in the book and can say the materials are easy to come by, the techniques are tolerant of mistakes, and clean-up is easy; soap and water. Highly recommended!
Scenery made easy! By A36JV16OL04TPU on 2006-11-08
This is it; this is the one to get! Dave Frary has put under one cover all the tips and tricks, formulas, and product recommendations for every facet of model railroad scenery. I enjoyed reading the book, and have already applied some of the techniques he describes, such as background painting techniques. If you already have a skilled scenery technique, then the formulas and proportions listed in about every section of the book would be enough of a reason to get this book.
Formulas, proportions, and techniques include mixing plaster, harder plaster, Sculptamold, tinted Sculptamold, textured Sculptamold, tinted joint compound, thinned white glue, matte medium bonding solution, wet water, acrylic color selections, basic paint formula, light earth tone paint, earth wash for tinting rocks, rock shadow color, grass textures, fall grass blend, summer grass blend, tree truck color, toothpick pine trees, making streambeds, backdrop colors, and many more

     By A3KL5CRPTVLGKL on 2002-07-23
I'm a beginner model railroader and this book has been exceptionally helpful. It's absolutely full to the brim with brilliant advice and easy to follow techniques. Full of clear photos of unbelievably detailed scenes.
- A wide reference
     By A1U0J5G985XDY on 2005-12-04
The information is organized in sections reflecting the stages of construction. For each stage, multiple techniques are illustrated, reflecting the Author's long experience, so that the reader may choose the one that he feels more comfortable with. For each technique, indication of appropriate tools, materials and quantities is provided. Many good quality pictures help understanding.
- great for building rocks and mountains.
     By A18DYWTDUKN3YF on 2007-07-25
Very good advice. excellent Step by step approach. The book tries hard to keep up with the latest technology and trends. I have the first edition, which I believe to hold a better overall perspective of scenery construction and color theory, which seems to be missing from the current edition. The two editions do complement each other quite well however. This edition goes into a great deal of detail of realistic rock outcropping construction. it would be nice if other aspects of scenery creation were treated with as much detail and finesse, such as trees, water, ground cover and prairie grass.

     By AB9MK8OJVJIAO on 2006-02-13
This book covers everything you'll need to know about making model scenery. That being said, the material presented may seem a little overwhelming and difficult to a novice, however, with some trial and error, you'll eventually get it right

     By A1U8YUCEX72QNI on 2007-05-29
Dave Frary presents this topic in a logical, progressive manner. Even if you have experience in building scenery, I'm sure you will still find some useful tips.

- By the Master
     By A8O77KXR52V8F on 2007-01-12
Excellent book with good photography showing how the "Master" builds scenery when "the best" is what is wanted. As a beginner, I'd like to know something about the cost of materials and maybe some low cost alternatives if there are any?
- The best hands-on reference guide
     By AQPGGF9CJM5HQ on 2007-02-02
I've used a variety of references, but Dave Frary's book, now in its third edition, is the most comprehensive and easy to use. It has become my go-to reference on everything from backdrop painting to scenery construction. Frary provides great photographs with step-by-step instructions for everything, even including helpful suggestions for mixing paint colors to achieve the desired effect.
I recently misplaced my copy and felt lost without it. I had to order a replacement before I could move ahead with my backdrop project.
- Practical basic advice, up to date
     By A2XPXX3HJFMLY9 on 2007-05-07
I am more of a technical model railroader, interested in software and decoder technology. Scenery is something I feel uncomfortable with. This book helps a great deal, with very practical how-to information, including where to get materials and tips on how to do what to more seasoned scenery builders would be obvious. But there are enough new things that old hands may find it useful too.
- A McClanahan Update
     By A20KQDMLSAUMNO on 2007-05-15
This book rivals the Bill McClanahan version from the fifties and sixties with updated, modern tools and techniques. It's a nice juxtaposition, and I use ideas from both.
- Top Guide
     By A2RC4KG6KZC6E8 on 2008-05-27
Full of helpful suggestions, particularly for those who like to scratch build. Innovative use of all sorts of materials to create great scenery. Good color pictures & 'how to' steps. Plus the book names brand name items that have been used in the scenery shown, so you know what to buy & what it can do if you are after a particular effect.
Highly recommended.
- How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery
     By A221YKG84HM8AH on 2008-06-01
This author has done an amazing job going through step by step on how to create realistic scale model scenery. He adds tips and tricks that helped me to build some small scale movie sets I was making. I suggest this book to anyone trying to do what the title implies. It does not go into much detail on any other model railroad facets, but for the money and subject matter, it is well worth the money.
