The greatest book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever! By AP6DHMSGG10RR on 2001-12-30
After reading this masterpiece, it is easy to see how some would say that this book seems to be divinely inspired. It is written in a true spirit of Christian charity and a genuine desire to make known the path "to Jesus, through Mary."The translation by Father Frederick Faber is so easy to follow, staying true to St. Louis' intent to, "... speak particularly to the poor and simple, who being of good will, and having more faith than the common run of scholars, believe more simply and more meritoriously ..." (paragraph 26). St. Louis does indeed state the truth quite plainly. And what a truth he states! This book, so beautifully organized, covers all aspects of true Marian devotion; the necessity of Marian devotion, the truths of Marian devotion, the nature of Marian devotion, the motives of Marian devotion, the effects of Marian devotion, and the inward and outward practices of Marian devotion. Add to that a whole appendix of prayers and litanies to aid in and practice this devotion. "Jesus Christ is the last end of true devotion to Mary" (paragraph 61). Absolutely! A true devotion to Mary is indeed a straight and sure path to a deeper understanding and relationship with Christ. Are you Catholic? Do you not understand what it means to be devoted to Mary? Read this book. Do you believe some of your brother and sister Catholics to be too devoted to Mary? Read this book. Do you want to be truly devoted to Mary, but are unsure how? Read this book. Are you protestant? Do you believe devotion to Mary to be idolatry or "Mariolatry"? Read this book. Do you believe devotion to Mary to be in opposition to devotion to Christ? Read this book. Do you believe "Mary can't help you"? Read this book. An excellent book; a must read for anyone who wants to know what true devotion to our Blessed Mother is, how it is done, why it is done, and what benefits come from it!
The Only Book I Know That Can Save Your Life By A1NYBJTKHJZC8Z on 2006-01-02
It is very difficult to assess a book so critical to humankind's very survival amid a world of good, evil and great suffering for so many. Especially, these days when evil seems to be on the winning end. I for one don't mind saying that despite my faith that good will always prevail, there are moments so excruciating it is hard to persevere and maintain one's integrity at the same time. If you are having problems, trials, tribulations of whatever sort - for goodness sake, bypass the How-To-Overcome-Everything-approach for now. There's plenty of time to go there, if that is your preference. I would only ask that you read this miraculous book first. You don't have to be Catholic or even Christian. You don't even need to believe in anything! Sometimes, just holding this book in your hands...is enough. And I don't care if this sounds "nuts." My real name is right here and I cannot hide from truth. And I would never dissemble about my greatest hero...The Blessed Virgin Mary, whom much of the world's souls lovingly refer to as Our Lady. Oh - and please do not be dissuaded by the cover art as shown here. I believe it was more worthy of a Master artist's cover design. Still, there are not enough stars in the Heavens to recommend this book more in its height, depth, scope and substance. I commend Amazon.com for making this grand little book available to everyone...with all my heart.
To Love Mary is to Praise Jesus By A1B05INWIDZ74O on 2005-12-16
In these writings Saint Louis De Montfort explains in detail what is required of us to have True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was through the most Blessed Virgin Mary that Jesus was brought into this world. And during his life, her humility was so great that she almost disappears in the scriptures and is truly only known to God. And being known unto God only filled her world.
This is a guidebook that leads us to Mary and from Mary to Jesus. Many of the Saints have been servants of Mary, and all have led souls to her and therefore Jesus. The author is very ardent and effective in these writings and does a wonderful job of most effectively make her loved and served.
If you are Catholic, you should read this book. The author made sure his labor of love would keep intact the integrity of Catholic doctrine. This is an excellent book to help in the understanding true devotion to Our Blessed Mother. All is covered, why we should pledge our devotion, how to perform consecration to Our Blessed Virgin, and the glorious benefits of devotion to Our Blessed Mother.
Absolutely brilliant!! THE book on Marian devotion. By A1RR0SQDPY4EAG on 2002-08-15
No other book on Marian devotion comes close to this one. St. Louis could have been canonized on account of this book alone! (okay, maybe not technically, but the book really is that good). I highly recommend this book for anyone who questions devotion to Mary, especially those who wonder if it 'goes too far.' This book does a perfect job of explaining what is appropriate, what is not, and why. If you only read one book about our Blessed Mother, this one should be it. A+! Thank you St. Louis for sharing with us such divine inspiration!
Why love Mary, and how can i love her more perfectly? By A26TZHVOPMRQ36 on 2002-02-19
This book explains why the Catholic Church loves and is devoted to Mary, the Mother of God. If you already know you love her, than this book will explain how you can take that love ,for the Mother of God, a little deeper in order for her to nuture Christ within us. This book is one that has changed my life and devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, forever and I think one that will change you too.
- Beautifully Written Marian Theology
     By on 2000-06-29
This is one of those books that actually helps one in developing their spirituality. There are many books out there for spiritual fulfillment, yet they often leave you in a state of limbo or barely touched, this books is much different. St. Louis DeMontfort writes straight from the heart and speaks of Mary as a child for love of his mother. At the same time, his theology is one to be reckoned with, especially one so Marian yet so Christological. John Paul II attributed this book to his great marian devotion and Mother Teresa recommended the pope make him a doctor of the Church, as a result of this sound and very well laid out Marian theology. I recommend this book highly and, although there are times when his theology can become hard to follow, it is worth the time and effort to figure it out, you will not be disappointed.
- Review from the Publisher

This is a new reprint of the much acclaimed Father Frederick Faber translation which has been out-of-print for several years. True Devotion To Mary by St. Louis Marie Grignion De Montfort (1673-1716) is considered to be the greatest single book on the Blessed Virgin Mary ever written. Seemingly divinely inspired, it is the classic statement on the spiritual way to Jesus Christ through Our Lady. Beloved by countless souls, this books sums up the entire Christian life, showing a way of holiness that is short, easy, secure and perfect - a way of life chosen by Our Lord Himself, as explained here in this book by the "Apostle of Mary." In this beautiful and sublimely inspiring book, St. Louis De Montfort explains the wonderful spiritual effects which True Devotion to Mary brings about in a person's life, leaving the reader with no doubt that this devotion provides the key both to sanctity and to salvation. No Catholic should reach age 20 without having read this book. 215pp. PB. Imprimatur.
- #1 Bible #2 Catechism of the Catholic Church #3 True Devotion to Mary
     By A3E6R89JDEUNJW on 2006-02-25
This book is completely awesome. With the True Devotion to Mary, we consecrate ourselves to Jesus through Mary, His holy mother. By consecrating ourselves to Jesus as slaves of Mary (and yes this devotion is approved of by the Holy Catholic Church) we immitate Christ very profoundly. To show His Humility, the Eternal Word became an infant in Mary's womb, and became completely dependent on her. We do the same by this devotion.
With this devotion we give everything we have to Mary: body, soul, property, and all the spiritual rewards of our good actions (i.e. graces, indulgences, etc.) to do with as she pleases.
But Mary will never be outdone in her generosity! So if we give her our whole life, she gives us back even more! So by this holy devotion, we glorify God much more plentifully in our short lives on earth.
So I implore you, if you wish to glorify God and reap His blessings, buy this book, and make the consecration to Jesus in Mary!
- Want to get closer to God? St. Louis has the answers!!!
     By AONRS19GF4IIA on 2006-04-19
"True Devotion to Mary" is the complete work on all aspects of devotion to Mary! St. Louis, since he is writing for a Catholic audience, tends to not explain basic Catholic doctrine concerning the Blessed Virgin, so this may be problematic for those who are unfamiliar with Church Teachings. Nonetheless, he lays out how a true Catholic should be devoted to Mary in an easy to read manner. I especially appreciated the section on types of devotees. Every time I read this book again (and I try to read it at least once every year) I find that I am classified as one of the faulty types of devotees. This book has really helped keep me in line with my faith, as well as bring me closer to God through Christ through Mary. His words of wisdom prove that devotion to Mary is necessary--since Christ came to us through her, so we should also go to Him through her. An amazing book by one of the greatest saints the world has ever known! I recommend it to everyone with a background in Marian teachings.
- The very best book on devotion to Mary

In short, if you could read only one book in your life, this should it. It is life changing in power and scope. There isn't a better book on Marian spirituality in print.
- Marian spirituality at its best!
     By on 1999-03-15
I can confidently say that this is the best book about Mary I have ever read, and one of the best on the interior life. It is translated by Father Frederick Faber, one of the most proficient of contemporary Catholic authors. But it is not recommended for newcomers to the Catholic faith.
- The classic treatise on Marian Devotion
     By A1WKFUH2NB2L3 on 2001-03-31
This beautiful translation of True Devotion by Fr. Frederick Faber belongs in the library of every Catholic who hopes to attain to the blessedness of heaven. In this book, the great St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Monfort teaches us the way to Jesus through Mary. He shows us how to live perfect devotion to Jesus and Mary by giving everything we have to the Mother of God (i.e. consecrating ourselves to Jesus through Mary). This book also has a supplement to guide anyone through the consecration to Mary, according to the saint's method. The supplement consists of prayers and spiritual practices that St. Louis de Montfort recommends to prepare for consecrating oneself entirely to Jesus, through Mary. The supplement also contains the Act of Consecration recommended by St. Louis de Montfort and the saint's method of praying the Rosary.
- Sheer Inspiration
     By A2GO6LH2IL8TI7 on 2005-10-03
This book is an inspired work of incredible proportions. Not so much the style as the content, meaning, if you are open to it, your very life will be changed by its message. Even if prior to reading it, you had no particular devotion to Our Blessed Mother, you will by the time you finish it. Don't miss it.
- Everything You Wanted To Know About Mary
     By A1A4LAM7KAOUSJ on 2000-03-29
I've read several books in my Marian growth process. This one tops them all. Everything I've learn from all the other books can be found here. If you want to discover what True Devotion to Mary is all about, this is your book.
- To Honor Jesus is to Honor the Blessed Virgin

This book both explains the how and why on both.
- A masterpiece written by the Holy Spirit Himself
     By AUPCZZIIADFFZ on 2007-01-18
This is, in my opinion, the greatest single book ever written on the Blessed Virgin. It is, in reality, like a compendium of all that the Holy Catholic Church had taught on devotion to the Blessed Virgin up to that moment, although nothing has really been added since then. In 215 pages it explains everything you need to know about TRUE devotion to the Blessed Virgin - it even explains false devotions, such as hypocritical devotees etc - and the crucial importance, by the will of God, of Mary in salvation history. You can clearly get the impression when reading this magnificent book that the author was not really the one who physically wrote down the words, St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, but in reality the Holy Ghost himself acting through this servant of God. This book is an absolute must for anyone who wishes to better his/her spiritual life. Needless to say, I think everyone should read this book - sinners and saints alike. For sinners, as a way to escape from spiritual ruin, and for saints, as a way to reach perfection which otherwise is very difficult to reach without a deep devotion to Our Lady. This book definitely has the power to change the life of the one who reads it. As St Alphonsus de Liguori stated, "Only God knows the good that can be done on a soul by reading a good book" and this book certainly falls in this category.
- Do you want to be Devoted?
     By A3V6BBIVFGFOYX on 2007-03-03
This is an important book. I am a recent convert to the Catholic Church. I grew up in a protestant denomination and Mary was someone who appeared for a couple of weeks at Christmas and then faded back into the dust of first century christianity. She was just one of many players in the drama of God. This book blows that shallow understanding to bits. Over the past year I have been getting to know my Mother. This book came to my attention only recently and I can not put it down! I will say this, one must read this book with faith. This is a very deep book, yet beautifully simple. It is a love story of devotion and courage. This book is a high calling to know Jesus in a way one may have never imagined possible.
Peace,
Keith
- Beautifully written
     By A2FI1YJ0OPSXDM on 2000-12-22
This shows that true Marian devotion leads the soul to a closer relationship with Jesus. Mary leads us to Jesus and Jesus leads us to the Father, simply putting it. Wonderful book to prove to Protestants that praying and honoring Mary is not blasphemous.
- True Devotion to Mary by St. Louis De Montfort: A Meditation on the Virgin Mother
     By A1QF5447F8UP9N on 2005-12-11
St. Louis De Montfort seems to almost be in ecstasy while writing True Devotion to Mary. Lovely exclamations, such as "Oh, how He loves humility of heart!" are found throughout the entire book and a feeling of fervor and urgency to his message of devotion. St. Louis does repeat himself often, which becomes somewhat monotonous. He also uses many rhetorical questions. These questions allow the reader to take a deeper look within and to better apply the text to his own spirituality. One example of such questions is when St. Louis is discussing the importance of allowing Mary to enter into the reader's soul so that he may grow closer to Christ, and he begins to question the reader. St. Louis asks, "When will the happy time come when the divine Mary will be established Mistress and Queen of all hearts, in order that she may subject them fully to the empire of her great and holy Jesus? When will souls breathe Mary as the body breathes air?" Such questions are critical to the book, because they allow the reader to reflect upon his devotion, or lack of, to Mary. True Devotion to Mary is a much needed piece of literature, but the reader must be aware of the intensity of the book. It is not a book that can be read in one day, or even one week; rather, it is a book that must be read over a long period of time, so that adequate time for reflection can be provided. St. Louis does seem to insist that the reader regard himself as terrible, unworthy, and disgusting. This does not seem to be as important as recognizing and answering the radical call to holiness that every person is invited to accept. It should be after many reflections, holy hours, and masses that a soul comes to see the sin within. The reader should realize that he may not see himself as terribly as St. Louis views himself, and this is to be expected. It is usually much later in life that a person comes to understand the immense sin within. Then, the person will understand hat it is quite necessary to seek forgiveness and to beg the Virgin Mother to save him from drowning in sin. St. Louis's advanced spirituality makes it hard for the reader to understand some elements and arguments of the book, especially when St. Louis writes of Mary's sanctity. He writes, "She is so intimately united with Thee that it were easier to separate the light from the sun, the heat from the fire; nay, it were easier to separate from Thee all the angels and the saints than the divine Mary, because she loves Thee more ardently and glorifies Thee more perfectly than all the other creatures put together." Such a claim is bold, and almost unheard of. It is such lines as those above that puzzle the reader and cause some discomfort within. A devotion to Mary, such as that of St. Louis, is not one that a person can understand, but must come to know in his own spiritual life. In addition to rhetorical questions and interjections, St. Louis has an amazing vocabulary that astounds the reader. St. Louis uses words such as "embellish," "extol," "abyss," and, "ample," to enhance his writing. Quite obviously, he was very educated and well read. St. Louis's understanding of the Catholic faith and knowledge of past saints and holy men and women is astounding. His book is eloquently written and does give much honor to the Blessed Mother and her son. As a whole, the book is beautiful and well written. If anything, a condensed version of this book would be beneficial to those with a smaller vocabulary and less mature spiritual life. Even though reading such a book may very well inspire a person to pursue a more intimate relationship with the mother of our Savior, Mary, the Ever-Virgin.
- True Devotion to Mary
     By AECXNNOCMP24M on 2007-01-05
This beautiful book is one that I bought many copies of to send to family and friends. It is a wonderfully real way to see Our Blessed Lady and her role as the Mother of our Lord. A book that will not only be in my library forever, but in my bed-side table as a reference.
- A Masterpiece!
     By A1YLN3C5UIKKOX on 2006-12-17
This wonderful little book provides a guide to becoming closer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through His Blessed Mother. Contained herein are both explantions as to how and why we can come closer to Divine Intimacy through our Lady and a discipline of devotions to cause this to happen. The writing, though archaic, is timelessly beautiful. And the message could not possibly be more important given the fallen state of our world today. Hail, Mary full of grace!

This book offers a depth of insight into the life of our Lord and the relationship between Jesus and Mary as well as between Mary and ourselves. It discusses her deep love and devotion to us as our spiritual mother, and how she brings us closer to her Son. This book is life-changing and is a wonderful way to deepen your spirituality and to grow closer to Jesus.
- Surprised !
     By AKPVRCRQDFZA4 on 2005-09-21
As a conservative Roman Catholic and graduate of Religious studies and devoted daughter of Mary I was surprised to read this view of marian devotion which I think borders on herasy. I did not read it.
- Honouring Jesus trough His Mother
     By on 2002-04-02
Saint Louis de Monfort, in his masterwork dedicated to marian devotion, explains who is Mary, why the Mother of God must be glorified and why honouring Mary is also a form that the faithful has to honour Jesus. This is an ideal book to improve the growth of spiritual life and, considering the truths that presents, should be known by all the catholics, very especially those ones blinded by post-conciliar confusion or, even, by protestant teachings about Mary. Finally, the way Saint Louis de Monfort writes is a pleasant surprise: simple, clear, concise, direct and modern... without being modernist. Excellent!
- I hate this book! It keeps me humble!
     By A11N9BPTZCUGJD on 2003-04-05
Just when I start to feeling good about myself, like I'm probably doing just fine in my Christian walk, I've got the Gospel down pat, I'm right next to the Lord like two fingers intertwined, I pick up this book and read a few pages. Wham! I get put back in my place. I realize that in most of my devotion, I am one of either the "presumptous devotees", the "inconstant devotees", the "hypocritical devotees", or the "interested devotees", all of which do NOT have a true devotion to Mary. After reading a few more pages, I am crawling along on my belly. Then I begin to meditate on what St. Louis is saying for a few days. I then realize I must start over, re-read the book, and renew my committment. It's a great book, but it sure doesn't help your ego much. I'll keep working with it though!
