  • Essential

    By ADABBCIPAP0DG on 2003-04-21
The most used book in my coat pocket. It didn't matter what rotation I was on this book is always in my coat pocket and is frequently used.

I also found this book to be pretty durable. I carried the same book in my pocket every day of my 3rd and 4th year of medical school and it is still holding up great through a lot of tough use.

  • Must have for M3 year!

    By on 2002-11-08
If you buy one book to keep in your white coat, make it this one. For a small book that will easily fit into any pocket, it contains guidelines for writing admission, discharge, and other notes commonly encountered on medicine, surgery, and ob-gyn rotations. It also includes commonly used formulas and cheat sheets for H&Ps and the neuro and the minimental status exam.
A great deal for a book that you're likely to use through the rest of your medical training!

  • Great buy for the price...

    By AZIY4D69N38IZ on 2005-08-02
This is a very handy and useful pocket reference book. I used the mini mental status exam (MMSE) page almost everyday on the psych rotation. The normal lab values page is also very useful. For the price, it is an excellent buy and well worth your money.

  • Not all-inclusive, but indispensible

    By A32BHDDDOLQUR8 on 2005-12-17
Essential for any medical provider in a hospital setting. Very accessible, quick reference. Could add a few more pages - but appropriate price.

  • A no brainer, must have for medical students and residents

    By A1435P5AMCPB3X on 2006-08-20
I picked this book up prior to day one of clinicals in medical school. Now 5 years later in residency I still refer to it on a regular basis. This is color coordinated and easy to follow sections on conversions, common normal lab values, progress notes, discharge summaries, H&P's, OP notes, Mini Mental Status exams, and neuro exams plus many more tidbits. I picked this up for 7 dollars at my bookstore, saved me many times at 2am on call. Get this, it will help you on all services. A gold standard of easy reference.

  • Highly recommended
    By A1Y23AKCY30MNI on 2005-08-31
A great book to have during the clinical year. Was very helpful as a quick reference as well as a guideline for writing notes.
One improvement would be to have the book available as a laminated version to hold up to the physical abuse after utilizing it so frequently.

  • Good reference.
    By A16U5V3HXAP7YK on 2005-09-03
This is a great quick reference especially when writing or dictating H&P's. I seems to have all the ways that are necessary for documenting various parts of the conventional physical exam though it does not have everything. It also has normal values for various tests which is great when you just can't seem to remember what the normals are.

  • great pocketbooke
    By AYMLD4I0RJSH9 on 2007-01-11
I lost mine in my 2nd year of medicine residency and immediately bought a new copy. i use it for quick reference material and as a guide for my discharge dictations. i find the helpful equasions and the ekg intervals especially useful. i don't use the ACLS criteria out of the book - they are too short to be really useful. Also a good place to keep brief notes - i typically write equations in the book and keep other more extensive notes elsewear

    Essential for the 3rd year!

  • A godsend for the medical student, and resident
    By A38QEATH3NODFM on 2006-08-21
Maxwell's Quick reference is the best little book to have as a medical student. Everybody in my class had one. Helpful with ACLS and EKGs, Lab values and equations, how to write orders and dictate/write notes and how to do H & P's . Also includes OBGYN and developmental milestones for pediatrics. To top it off it has a great neurology section with charts and nerological exam helpers, including the mini-mental status, which is handy for psychiatry as well. On the back is an Eye chart. Included are several blank pages for note taking. Mine are filled up now that I am almost through residency. Fun to look back at what I wrote as a student. But, this book was a savior then, and it is still helpful now. Get it, its cheap and handy.

  • Perfect for the wards
    By A2ZH4KNYC6BUNN on 2007-02-02
Excellent resource -- succinct yet chock-full of useful information. Great for 2nd year preceptorships and a must-have for years 3/4.

  • Must have for the Wards
    By A1TOYOHEOZEXG3 on 2007-02-10
Everyone's got this in the pocket of their white coat. It has everything you're supposed to know but are likely to forget: lab values, neuro exam, everything for history & physical exam. It's a small investment for such a useful reference.

  • Can't Live Without It
    By A40POGZJART8O on 2007-03-08
A MUST for every medical student.
It will get you through simple H&p's but also answer random questions.
Has SOAP note layouts, neurological exams, equations and more.
Truly a necessity for every medical student

  • A must for every PA-S
    By A3DCUXT9ZSSFHZ on 2007-04-16
This is a necessity for every PA student on rotations. It will help you on Int Med, Fam Prac, Paeds, Ob/Gyn, Neuro, Surgery, etc.... It is very well organised, and will be your most used reference - yes, even more than your PDA! Great refresher for much of the day-to-day info (lab values, note format, GCS, H&P, etc...) learned didactic year. It is even more durable now that it has been laminated.

  • The ESSENTIAL pocket reference
    By A292KHTOXR3V7Y on 2007-07-08
If you are a med student/resident and you carry nothing else in your pockets, you should have a copy of Maxwells. Even if you have a PDA loaded with all of the best medical software, you should still carry a Maxwells. It's inexpensive (especially compared to other pocket texts), it's small, it's convenient, and it's crammed with practical information that you probably wouldn't otherwise remember.

  • Most-used reference
    By APR4JXZZIWV3T on 2007-11-01
This book kept me moving through med school, residency, and now 2 years of hospital practice with ER responsibilities. I'm ordering another copy because my first one is finally falling apart. Buy this book!

    By A2P50FZEJTK9VM on 2007-03-25
Maxwell's reference has been invaluable to 'jog the memory' on rounds, or a late night with atypical patients... besides, who really memorized all the dermatomes?? Thanks, Dr. Maxwell!

We have liked this small compact medical reference and have used it for the last 5 years. We will continue to order these every year.

  • Great quick reference

  • Nice pocket hand book for medical students and interns
    By A30ZOJFB1Z56PS on 2007-08-13
This is a very useful companion for all medical students, interns and probably nurses. It includes most of the important things that we always forget during writing notes or interpreting patient's lab. Strongly recommended for new students and Interns.

  • Great little reference
    By A3QEREGBFUMKWV on 2007-10-17
Maxwell's is a useful little book. Small, so it doesn't clutter up my pockets any more than necessary. Filled with information I need to have at my fingertips while caring for my patient. I have a PDA but I carry this as well and it has been worth every penny.

  • Maxwell
    By A2OB1F7VOT41RV on 2007-10-24
I needed this book and I am happy that I was able to purchase it. It is a great addition to my library of medical textbooks

  • Not as good as everyone said it would be
    By A21ORT6R5IBKP5 on 2008-02-09
I am a PA student doing my clinical rotations and was told by several people that this item was very nice to have. It does have a few helpful things, but in the 2 months I have had it I have only pulled it out of my pocket a few times.

  • A little gem!
    By on 1999-08-20
This pocket reference contains a plethora of useful information, from SOAP notes to lab values, dermatomes to ECG axis determination. Every time we use ours on the floor (which is every day!), someone looks over our shoulders to see what we're using... and then the next day we find they've bought one! A must-have survival item for the floors.
