Harry Caray: Voice of the Fans (Book w/ CD)x$13.91
    (6 reviews)
Best Price: $21.95 $13.91
WGN announcer Pat Hughes presents Harry Caray: Voice of the Fans, an audio/photo tribute to Chicago and St Louis sports broadcaster Harry Caray, one of the most beloved figures in baseball. Caray’s personality was as much a part of his charm as his broadcasting skill, and even ten years after his death, baseball fans across the country recall Caray fondly, both for his play-by play calls and his genuinely excited “Holy Cow!” exclamations during the games.
Pat Hughes has compiled Caray’s most famous calls and broadcasts onto a CD that accompanies the book. By combining Harry’s voice with photos and stories of the Cards and Cubs, Harry Caray: Voice of the Fans will give readers not only a fond memory of Caray, but also a “where were you when...?” for many famous games, such as Ryne Sandberg’s double game-tying home runs in 1984.

Pretty, but too "fluffy" for a true Cub fan By AEKWVA8QG4OIW on 2007-11-27
I bought this book for my sister, who has been an avid Cubs fan since the early 1980's. There were no customer reviews yet but I thought I'd take a chance. The book had a CD, contained photos, and was a biography (I thought) of the man himself. I was expecting it to have first hand information about Harry's life and maybe some colorful behind-the-scenes stories, or some special insights from the players or managers point of view.
When the book arrived and I paged through it I was taken aback to see how large the font was. I knew it was only 128 pages but I expected there to be some content to it. In actuality, the text read more like a kid's book than an adult's. I didn't read the entire book (though it would have taken only a few minutes), just enough to get a feel that this was not the hard-hitting Harry Carey biography I expected.
I never listened to the CD so I can't speak for that. As I said, I didn't want to break the binding so I didn't even read the entire book. I know it did contain information about Harry's childhood and life and the CD probably would have added to the experience. The photos were lovely and the cover photo made it a very appealing book to look at and page through.. However this book did not live up to my expectations. I ended up returning it. It would probably make a good coffee table book but for a real Cubs fan it was way too "fluffy'.
Pat Hughes delivers again By A3CRFX4HMN3PEQ on 2008-01-21
If you too think that Cubs radio announcer Pat Hughes is one of the best in the business, you'll enjoy this book. I'm not a Cubs fan, but the person I bought it for is. We both agree that listening to Cubs games on the radio is a pleasure, mostly because of Pat.
He tells tales about Harry Caray mostly from the broadcasting perspective. The person I got this book for is an avid reader, and finished it very quickly. It's an easy but fun read, or so I was told. The CD which comes with the book is a nice addition for those who want to hear a some soundbites of the immortal Harry Caray.

I learned a lot I didn't know but I thought the c.d. would have more of my favorite announcer and not just him being talked about.
Great for Cubs Fans By A3GMVAZIPFLECS on 2008-03-03
Absolutely loved this book. The CD that comes with it is great too. Loved to hear the bits with Harry again.

It is a great book in that it tells a side of Harry Carey's life as a broadcaster that I never knew. I learned quite a few things about him, plus one of my friend's grandson is pictured in the book. (He is the one with the big glasses and the ivy on his head. He is a big Cub's fan!) My son-in-law loved the book, too! Great reading!
