  • Excellent resource for the ultralight backpacker!

    By A2QSL3H09468RR on 2006-02-10
I too was given this book as a gift and it's great!

I've tried a number of the recipes (and a few of my own now) and have never had any problems with pouring hot water in a freezer bag. (I called the manufacturer and they said it would be fine.)

The author outlines the simple prep/packaging/cooking process clearly and what I got were great, tasty meals that cut the weight of my pack by 25%. Also, for once I was able to improve my packweight (and menu) without having to buy a bunch of expensive gear. My kitchen now consists of a tin pot, plastic spoon and a super-cheap pepsi can stove. (So I blew the money on a new tent...but that's another story...)

As the child of a professional chef, I never could stomach the freeze-dried stuff and MRE's (which don't taste much better)weigh a ton. Now I've got a book full of great tasting, easy to prepare recipes and I can leave the 20lbs of canned/fresh food (along with most of my old cook gear) at home.

Hope to see a Book 2 soon!

    Thanks,

    Perry P. Perkins

  • I LOVE this book!

    By A1MZH3FOKYXGYP on 2006-02-10
I LOVE this book! I bought it a week ago, but have been using the author's website for almost a year. I was amazed to read that someone had tanked it. My husband and I are active in a large outdoors organization in the area and have recommended the book to quite a few people. Hubby loves eating so well when on a long backcountry trip compared to those poor schmucks eating expensive freeze-dried stuff or power bars!

  • Backpackers' stomachs best friend is this book!

    By A28VIWQ484UP04 on 2005-12-30
This is a superb resource for those tired of paying for the tasteless and expensive, pre-packaged freeze-dried dinners. The recipes use easily acquired ingredients and sources are listed for those harder to attain. I began eating out of zip-lock bags around 2001 but I was only using them to divide the pre-packaged dinners. Sarah Svien has taken it much farther and made eating on the trail much healthier, tastier, cheaper and easier...not to mention LIGHTER as you do not carry pots and pans...and you do not have anything to wash! I've always loved the later aspect in regards to using freezer bags. Week-end backpackers and thru hikers alike rejoice! On behalf of your stomach, I thank you for purchasing this book.

  • You'll be sorely disappointed.

I got this book from a friend as a gift. The other reviews here are by the author and probably a friend of the author. As anyone reading it will not like it. Beside what kind of woman would put hot water in a freezer bag? I'm sure you'll use your common sense and steer clear of this one. There are other great selections here on Amazon. Search on trail food. I wonder if the author is even a backpacker or camper. Anyway......just one woman's viewpoint....use your own head... Peace and love.

  • Concept okay, but tiny book, quite overpriced.

    By AT79BAVA063DG on 2008-04-01
This is a very slender book, with not that many recipes for the price you're paying.

And, you can do the same thing with a large, lightweight insulated travel mug (you know, the kind that are 'way too large for any car's cup holder), saving the truly wasteful practice of throwing away plastic bags, and/or having them blow away in a brisk wind, creating yet more litter.

Check this book out of the library first, before buying.

  • Good food in the Great Outdoors
    By A3G5C0I1DNA81Z on 2006-02-09
So, you've escaped to the wilderness for a few days. Far into the woods, you've left behind all the troubles of everyday life. Except you still have to eat. That means you still have to cook. With cooking come all the requisite chores: preperation, timing, serving, CLEANING.

    Nope.

Boil water. Open bag. Pour in water. Wait. Eat. Fold and pack out the bag.

It really is that easy. You do your prep at home. All you need is a way to boil water in camp and you're eating tasty, balanced meals in that much time.

There are a lot of companies selling freeze-dried or dehydrated meals for travelers that claim the same convenience. This book tells you how to package your own healthy, tasty meals and enjoy the same convenience for a lot less money.

All the necessaries are there: what equipment, what ingredients, and how to make it all work. Based on the techniques in this book, I can travel in the backwoods with less food weight than the norm and be very well fed.

    Very Good Book.

  • A cookbook I'll use!
    By A1E6OCXJ31FU0Q on 2006-02-09
I love to backpack, but I hate to fuss over food when I'm in the woods. This cookbook provides recipes that let a person make good tasting, filling backpacking meals with a minimum of effort and NO clean-up! The majority of recipes produce a casserole-type dish, and can be made with items which are easily bought in a typical grocery store. There are recipes for beverages, breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. Mmmmmm.

  • Simplicity rules!!!!
    By A1400H3D907VYE on 2006-02-09
After many years of trying many methods of cooking while on the trail, freezer bag cooking is absolutely THE best way to get the job done! No more messy pots, or "gaggy" tasting and intestional binding freeze-dried food for me. The recipies are utter simplicity and as much gourmet dining as you care to make them. I've now tried many of the recipies in Svien's book and it's obvious that she has done her time in the backcountry, taken the time to research, experiment, actually make and refine the tasty dishes that she describes. This book is an excellent resource that I'll be using for years to come!

  • Response to "Kate24"
    By AH71USLJ91KEB on 2007-03-20
In response to reviewer Kate24: I am not the author, I do not know the author, I purchased an earlier version of this book, directly from the author's website, before it was available on Amazon, based on the free information she had posted on the Web. In addition, I own a number of other camping/backpacking recipe books, and I do camp and backpack.

This is a useful little book, with lots of ideas that can serve as a starting point for making up your own recipes. I have actually used very few of the recipes in this book, but I still HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, because it gets my mind thinking about recipes of my own.

Although Sarah did not originate the idea of using freezer bags, dehydrated foods and boiling H2O, she has helped to spread the word on a great way to pack meals for a backpacking trip that cut weight, eliminate cleanup that wastes time and valuable potable water, and taste good while providing more than adequate nutrition.

Buy this book and a dehydrater and get busy before your next backpacking trip!

  • a good start
    By A3H85TA9I4H7MA on 2008-01-13
I bought this from her website with the cozy and a long spoon (the starter kit). This is a great start for learning to make good meals for your hike. I think you get a lot more out of using the book and the website together. (I also made her little baker which is shown on her site out of cheap aluminum cookie sheets and it works very well.) Her links on her website also get you resources to buy all the little packets she includes in her recipes, if you don't want to drive around town collecting them from fast food/restaurants. I am a particular fan of her pasta recipes - the trick of dehydrating cooked pasta to rehydrate on the trail wouldn't have occurred to me, and it saves so much time and fuel to just pop the ingredients into a cozy while you're drinking that nice hot cup of tea, instead of hauling a big pot and boiling pasta for ten-twelve minutes.

You're not going to be making haute cuisine with this, but let's face it - you really just need fuel for the trail and the lighter and simpler you make it, the less calories you'll be burning to carry it. It also minimizes clean up after each meal. And freezer bags are reusable - use them as trash carriers, take them home and wash/dry them, use them next trip. My current kitchen is a metal pot, a square of foil for a lid, stove and canister, lighter, a cozy and a spoon. How simple and uncomplicated.

  • Freezer Bag Cooking
    By A3MISMTKIHSMCX on 2006-02-09
The book is now a well used staple of menu planning for boys in my Scout Troop, the meals are perfect for Scouts, easy to prepare, filling, and most important, minimal cleanup. As the author notes, some users mix the meals in mugs or bowls rather than bags. The wide variety of meals allows the boys to find something for everyone to eat. This cook book needs to be in the library of every scout troop.

  • Freezerbag Cooking - Great Book
    By A1CY2RZTCBLD60 on 2006-08-27
The book, "Freezerbag Cooking" is really an eye-opener. After picking up the concept of cooking in a freezer bag, one can start converting other recipes to the same cooking method - using either store bought ingredients, or stuff you can dry at home in a dehydrator.

Sarah's recipes as some folks have suggested may be high in sodium, but one can always substitute ingredients with low-sodium or replace with something else all together. Sodium content is something I need to watch myself. After all, the ingredients list for cooking a meal is somewhat flexible. It seems that almost anything tastes good after a day spent outdoors hiking.

Another concern folks seem to have is pouring boiling water into a plastic bag. You can always use the crock pot bags if you feel strongly about this. I have never had any problems pouring water into a bag. Other reviewer wrote something similar to this, boil water. Open bag. Pour in water. Wait. Eat. Fold and pack out the bag, does not get simpler than this, it's a no-brainer.

A truly great book to get you started with the concept of freezer-bag cooking. Looking forward to volume 2.

  • Great Pour Water In Bag cooking
    By A5Z9CAT3EY7FL on 2006-02-09
I have purchased three copies of this book because it's one of the most usefull backpacking cookbooks out there.
Two of the copies I have sent to backpacking friends as Christmas gifts. They each loved the gifts.
I LOVE the concept of this book and use it quite a bit on my backpacking trips. A couple of the items I even eat at home they are so good.
Anyone that is tired of paying the sky high prices for Mountain House Freeze Dried foods will be very happy with this book.

  • Interesting, but ....
    By A4AYKHATEO9MX on 2007-11-20
I was put off by the reference to "white trash" cooking -- in this day and age, there's no place for racist comments like this.
Overall, the book was interesting and the recipes are OK. No mention is made of how long some of the dehydrated ingredients will last -- probably not long -- so beware of standard food storage practices!

  • This book will open your eyes
    By A3NDUU6EZ2WWC3 on 2006-09-27
    This is a GREAT book!

Cooking and doing dishes in the woods is one of the most time consuming, thankless jobs of a camping trip. Forget carrying pots, pans, skillets; forget carrying soap, forget washing dishes and forget expensive, freeze dried food.

Use the recipes in this book to prepare quick, nutritious meals using off the shelf ingredients. Use freezer bag cooking techniques to eliminate dirty dishes, scrubbing pots in the dark or wasting precious fuel to boil oit grease and germs.

  • Tasty backpack food for for less.
    By A12JTCFAJAAHFI on 2007-03-25
Freezer Bag Cooking means that you can greatly reduce your pack weight, simplify your food preparation, but still eat great food for a whole lot less!

    Every backpacker should try it!

  • wonderful trail food...
    By A2M3WXPILJ4AS8 on 2007-09-02
again, wonderful lightweight , healthy , creative food on the trail to show the scouts how well you can eat, without the luxury of many pots and pans, and mess kits... I spent the whole weekend, with our scout leaders eating out of the plastic bags that we cooked in as well. Not to mention that the food was healthy AND GOOD TASTING!! Great book!!

  • My mouth was watering....
    By A1KSHZD2YTW4F6 on 2006-02-09
with each turn of the page. This little cookbook is an asset to every backpacker's gear list, and especially for those who enjoy ultralight hiking. It is a timesaver. I don't want to be in camp cooking, while everyone else is out enjoying themselves. Thumbs Up!

I've had the opportunity to use this cookbook over the last year or so, and the recipes are so easy to alter, add your own special ingredients, and make the food to your tastes!

I am excited to see if another book is coming from this author soon!

  • Very Tasty!
    By ALBK0KBKF46IH on 2007-04-04
This is a great book for those new to or experienced in camping, backpacking, and hiking.

It starts with a great introduction into what you'll need to be successful including great tips for stocking your pantry and what gear you'll need. The book then dives into a great collection of easy but delicious recipes! They are categorized into breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, salads, and desserts.

I'm involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and I've used these recipes to create some terrific, easy to transport meals!

This book is a great addition to the collection of anyone that spends time eating in the great outdoors!
