  • --->*mysterious TRANSITION*<---

    By A1WCPE9HSCSGNZ on 2000-02-27
I'm one of the ordinary teens that go out & live life in a typical teen perception (e.g. parties, friends, listenining to music, enjoying youth as it is, etc.) I used to be the type of person who typically never found interests with the ''positive thinking'' category (i was cynical at the time). I read this book one day cause it was lying on top my dad's desk, i was hoping to ''kill time'' by glancing at a few pages. Suddenly, i became attached towards Peale's theories and i began reading from page to page and started applying positive concepts into daily situations (even when ''obstacles'' were bound to hold me back) and mysteriously enough my attitude towards life transformed me into an optimist and a devoted believer in God which in turn, gave me successfull results (especially in my academics!). Hey, you have no need to believe me if you choose too, but I strongly affirm this book WILL alter your mind into becoming a believer with ''The Power of Positive Thinking''. If you're a parent with a stressful life style, THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. If you're the hard worker feeling as if you're not getting anywhere, THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. If you're a student feeling ''tripped & zoned out'', THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. All the people i've mentioned illustrates the average person bombarded with everyday problems (trust me, i literally live with them), yet the solution lies in front of your eyes because this book draws out supplies of confidence, faith in your own abilities, positive affirmations, and spiritual guidance in YOUR life...hey, i wouldn't just waste time to make this book review and neither would the rest of these people who placed an entry analysis for this book. "Faith power brings miracles.."

  • Power of mental discipline!

    By A2D9IEFJGB483Q on 2002-02-15
This book should really be called "The Power of Prayer" so the title is half misleading. I say half, because prayer is a type of mental discipline, therefore, it is a special type of thinking, but not quite "positive thinking" per se.

This is a wonderful book on prayer, and you cannot fault anyone for trying to help other people draw closer to God, since that is what prayer is: speaking with the infinite. Dr. Peale encourages intercessory prayers, that is, sending our prayers in behalf of other people, especially random prayers for people you don't know.

Being a very praxological-heavy book, the theology and orthodoxy comes in only to explain the proper practice. In other words, this book has strong legs and busy hands, and is a real "hand's on" book. It tells you what you need to do to become better. As I said earlier, prayer is a type of mental discipline thane involves control, focus, and a concern for other people and other things beside you. And that is what good religion is all about: love for your neighbor.

The title has become a bit of a byword, but it is nice to see what Dr. Peal is really talking about. It is not a mere chanmge of mind, or mental technique, but he is advocating a fuller life in Christ. This is a very spiritual book, and not some pop-psychological mumbo jumbo.

  • change your life

    By A3BVRA2QL3TIOQ on 2000-06-13
I use to be a skeptic to the teachings of this book... that is until I read it and took to heart everything contained inside, then my life changed. And this book can and will work for you. All that is required is an open mind, a belief in God, studying this book every single day, and doing exactly what it says. The number of copies of this book are in the millions ! Ordinary folk and world famous celebrities have studied and followed its principles. People have been inspired by it and changed the course of their lives and the lives of the people around them. To give you a sample of its contents, here are just a few chapter titles: Expect the best and Get It, How to break the worry habit, How to have constant energy, How to get people to like you, Many more inspiring chapters are contained in this informative manual. Mr. Peale is an expert in this field and has written several other self help manuals. This book was originally published in 1952, made best seller lists and helped millions of people. If you don't get this book you are really missing out. Whether you're a parent, single parent, teen, 30 something, senior citizen, corporate executive, or janitor, if you are heavy burdened, this book can change your life . This is a book designed to inspire faith in God and destroy anxieties in your life. Don't say you'll order it some other time, procrastination is an ugly word... order this book today.

  • Disappointing version

    By A3D0TD4M4X9IK4 on 2005-12-13
This is not the original Power of Positive Thinking book that I was expecting. This is a tiny, pocket-sized abridged version. I did not see that mentioned anywhere in the description, but maybe I just overlooked it. Anyway, I was extremely disappointed because I wanted the original version to give as a gift to a friend. This tiny version has very little information in it. Find the original version if you can. It will change your life.

  • Not a book for non-Christians

    By A2N3K7J5LGE69D on 2007-03-19
The power of positive thinking and strong intentions is well-known and documented, and this short book does indeed offer some strategies for using these techniques. However, the book's primary focus is on establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ, and the author's attitude seems to be that the success of positive thinking hinges on that relationship.

I don't want to sound anti-Christian, but the powers of intention and the law of attraction are enough on their own to give all the results you could ever want or need. A belief in a specific deity or religion are completely unnecessary. Although Peale probably didn't know it at the time of original publication, the law of attraction is a scientific concept, not a religious one. Also, it's rather contradictory to tell someone that they have the power within to accomplish anything, but they need Jesus to do so. Either you have the power or you don't - Jesus has nothing to do with it. (And you DO have the power!)

If you are a Christian, I'm certain that the ideas in this book will resonate. And more power to you! But for those of us who are not, the book comes across as extremely preachy and outdated. There are many better choices on the same topic that don't have some mention of Jesus Christ on 90% of their pages.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I want to add that while I am not a Christian, I DO believe in God. I find it offensive, frankly, that people assume a belief in a deity means one is a Christian, and I want to make it clear that there are more options than just Christianity and atheism!)

  • Can't think positive unless you read the Bible??
    By A1VM0ZLE0NIVAC on 2005-04-17
This book is definitely only for Christians.

I am a spiritual person and have a lot of appreciation for the teachings in the Bible, but Peale repeatedly insists that self-confidence cannot be acheived without faith in the Bible and practicing Christianity. Peale didn't consider that folks of different faiths might also benefit from his positive thinking techniques.

Too bad, I was looking forward to this one.

  • Thank you
    By on 1999-11-20
I know the author has died and no doubt is enjoying eternal life in heaven, but I would like to thank him in this small way for making me realise that life is nothing without Christ and for putting me back on track. If this book did anything for me, it was that it made me realise that life is great, I am so happy when I think of my wife and kids and thank God for the abilities he has given me.God bless.

  • Do not buy this if you are not religious!
    By A1YY112XPG7HXA on 2008-06-01
(sigh) I have heard so much good stuff about this book that I literally could not wait till I received it. However nowhere do the ads (that I recognized) do they let you in on the insipid religious bigotry that permeates the book. If you don't believe in god - then forget it! According to the author you've got no hope. In his mind success and religious spirituality cannot be separated and although there are probably some meritorious elements of the book, they are bastardized by the cheap religious recruitment drive endlessly spewing from the pages. As an atheist I couldn't get through half the book without retching. Consequently it went spinning out of my window and hopefully into a bin.

If you are not a fundamentalist Christian who believes in prayer - or you are not easily brainwashed then don't waste your money.

  • Don't let this one out of your sight!
    By A362NHBS2KJHP2 on 2007-06-13
This book is an absolute must-have! Coming across the title of this book is like you having found a source of hidden treasure for you to behold and begin a newfound journey in your life. I'm glad you are here reading this today. This compelling book examines faith-based principles that contain the potential to revolutionize anybody's life should they follow through. "How are you so sure?" you may ask, well, this book has been in my family for some time now. My grandmother (an ardent fan of Norman Vincent Peale books) had given a copy to my father, and I in turn, well... was introduced to The Power of Positive Thinking by accident (and what a wonderful accident it has come to be!) as the book was just laying on my father's desktop several years ago and I happen to stumble upon it. I recall having been positively charged up at that moment as Norman Vincent Peale shows you how you can achieve your goals, how to never believe in defeat (as victory is yours to start with), how to stay calm amidst the rush of everyday life, and most importantly how faith in yourself and in God regardless of your religious beliefs, can create the ultimate partnership for successful living today.

I am very grateful for writers like Norman Vincent Peale. I have accomplished more than what I had asked for. I was shown how to realize my goals through a good dose of faith and prayer. Dr. Peale draws from real life examples and inspiration from the Bible and shows you how your life coupled with the right attitude, can unlock your full potential for a meaningful lifestyle. His main source of reference is typically from Christian texts, but I find his message to be truly applicable to any religious community. I am compelled to write this review because of how this book had changed my life. Norman Vincent Peale is like a coach in a book, and not to mention, like a good family friend.

Read this book, but be careful for what you ask for or dare dream to accomplish in this life, it may just come true.

  • Highly Abridged Edition
    By AABRTVF6ZLBNX on 2005-09-08
This micro edition of the famous book measures 2.76" wide by 3.29" tall and with only 128 pages must be no more than 11% of the full text of "The Power of Positive Thinking." So where does Amazon.com mention this epic shortcoming in the description? Buyer beware, I guess. Very disappointing.

  • Great book if I was a Hobbitt
    By A2Z24UUDU46JXH on 2005-10-05
Great message but my adult sized hands had a hard time turning the pages....What a rip off! I can't believe I paid real sized money for a miniscule sized book. Sheesh!

  • This book will change your life!
    By on 2000-11-10
I grew up to believe that God would stick his foot out and trip me when the going got too good; hence, I was wracked with anxiety and sabotaged every good thing that ever happened to me until I read this book. Norman Vincent Peale released me from fear and gave me confidence, peace of mind, and a happy marriage. Most important, he restored my faith and helped me begin a relationship with God. If you suffer from anxiety, lack of self-confidence, inability to sustain relationships, this book is for you!

  • Believe... and you shall be free
    By A2W8E91R4R9NF5 on 2002-05-01
When I started to read this book I almost wanted to quit immediately after it stated that it was based on the Christian principles of the Bible. Even though I have been brought up in the Roman Catholic faith, I thought "Oh, no. I don't want religion jammed down my throat," ESPECIALLY not in a book. Well, may I suggest that I could have committed one of the worse mistakes of my whole life had I stopped reading then and there?

Dr. Norman Peale affirms the Christian principles once and again, but the reader has no need for desparing, for he does not sell religion in his book. Instead, he suggests a new approach to it, purely practical. Here we have a look at the most read book of all time in a way few people could have imagined. He suggests we all use the Bible as a tool for successful living. Interesting? You bet!

The use of religion in everyday life is unavoidable, but you've never heard of using it in way so that your life flows easier, happier, with less stress and much rewards. After all, this is the way we were intended to feel in our brief passage through this world, since we were made to the image of God. The wonderful suggestions don't stop there. Being a partner in a small business, the idea of "taking God in" as another partner in order to make it successful, seemed incredibly original to me; and yet, could you think of a more natural way to talk to God?

After reading Dr. Peale's book you'll probably start to wonder how you never thought of these possibilities even though they appear to be indeed so natural and will definitely make life so much easier for you. Although he does say the reasons we became (and that is "became", not "were born with") the way we are today, is something you'll have to turn elsewhere to discover; the techniques for a new outlook on life, one that will allow you to reap the fruits of success and both personal and professional achievement, are given and shown here: the power of prayer.

I decided to keep this book by my night table. I have it marked to passages of special prayer and so far, it's done wonders for me.So start right away, get your copy and periodically, as Dr. Peale says, read passages of Scripture. There's no reason why you shouldn't reap the benefits of the most wonderful vineyard of all.

  • The book title should be "The Power of Wishful Thinking"
    By A1ZXWQYFBQFC6B on 2003-01-20
This book is dangerous, particularly for naive people who believe that they can achieve anything by thinking positive. When you face risk or danger, you have to explore and weigh the possible negative consequences. I strongly recommend "Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self" by Dr. Rosalene Glickman. This brilliant, realistic book points out the pros and cons of positive thinking. It teaches you how to make the most of any situation and achieve your goals, without wishful thinking. You learn how to ask the best questions to get the best answers. You also learn how to identify and understand disturbing emotions, use them as optimization signals and make the most of them. In this age of terror and technology, you can't waste your time with wishful thinking. Optimal thinking is the optimal path.

  • **-----> Mysterious Transition (part 2)!!! <--------**
    By A1WCPE9HSCSGNZ on 2003-05-15
3 years ago, I wrote a review describing my "mysterious transition" after reading this book. I was your typical teen who liked "hanging out" with friends, going to parties, and enjoy youth as it is. I had never intended to read this book until I accidentally came across a copy on top of my dad's desk and had hoped to "kill time" with it. Fortunately, I was grasped by such profounding ideas in the first few pages that I kept reading on until I applied Peale's suggestions towards daily activities and my attitude towards life had changed completely! My relationship with others improved, my grades in school became very outstanding, my appreciation for the academia went beyond I could've ever imagined, and most importantly my admiration for Christianity and life itself had developed into something truly indispensable. Keep in mind, I was the exact opposite of everything I had just stated here, in other words, a negative person. Of course, it has been 3 years since I wrote about this and I still refer to Peale's book for specific guidance! Currently, I am attending a fine university and I am STILL inspired to conquer life's challenges and reach towards great goals with humble faith and optimism. Its principles and applications towards daily situations has brought me many victories (externally AND internally!). Whoever you are (worker, parent, student, etc.) and wherever you are, living life to the fullest is yours; it can begin with this book and boy, is it a grand experience when its principles are applied. I absolutely RECOMMEND this book. Hey, how often do you hear about a reviewer coming back TWICE to advocate this book? Like I said 3 years ago, I wouldn't just waste time to write an entry analysis on The Power of Positive Thinking, and neither would the other reviewers. "An inflow of new thoughts can remake you regardless of every difficulty you may now face...'Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.' " (N.V.P.)

  • The Power of Being a Good Christian
    By A2QAOP52OEB5EV on 2005-01-14
That should be the title of the book. Positive thinking? Um, very minimal. Oh yeh, did I mention you need to think postively? This book refers alot to the Bible. I don't have any problems with that, but I thought the title is pretty misleading. If you don't convert to Christianity after reading this book, I don't know what will. This book leans more to God for help than positive thinking. OK, maybe postive thinking is thinking about God, but how about people not religious? Again, not the best title. I got fooled by the title, decided to read it anyway, and was very disappointed.

  • The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale
    By A1TKYAYESYHIA2 on 2005-08-05
The Power of Positive Thinking is just about that, unlocking the power that arises from thinking and acting positively all the time. I come from a continent (Africa) with its fair share of challenges, and the resulting feeling of powerlessness, dejection and hopelessness by millions of people. Many cite various daily perennial challenges like bad corporate and national governance and cannot see the way out. However, Norman Vincent Peale shows that through conscious positive thinking, actions and prayers, each of us can make a big difference. Positive thoughts and actions are contagious and they have to start from you and me. From there, it is amazing the positive difference this can make to those around us and beyond. This book is highly recommended so that we can all change our lives for the better and win success through positive thinking.

  • "Must-have" recording for daily inspiration and motivation.
    By A25T6QP06Z996G on 2000-12-19
I purchase this audio set over and over again, as my copy seems to constantly disappear, "gifted" to friends or loved ones in need. No matter what challenges you wrestle with in life, few messages are as timeless and useful as those found in "The Power of Positive Thinking." Norman Vincent Peale's own voice recording of his book is compelling and irresistable. If you don't feel uplifted and empowered after listening, you can't be helped!

  • Your thoughts will form you...
    By A36HR9N0UOH2WS on 2001-07-24
"Tell me what you think about when you don't have to think; and I will tell you what you are and largely what you will become"

Brother Peale uncovers the learning of his lifetime, "I think, therefore, I am". He combines his learning as a religious leader and as a person to teach how thoughts create your situation. I particularly enjoy this book because he includes how belief in God can help each of us.

The book mostly covers how to use your thoughts to improve your situation. Positive thinking will help you emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically. Positive thinking will also help you in your endeavors at work. I have applied the principles in this book and have experienced a change in myself and the world around me. The power of positive thinking has spread to my wife and to my friends. I have also read "Think and Grow Rich". "The Power of Positive Thinking" will greatly supplement the chapters on the power of thought in TAGR.

By applying the principles taught in "The Power of Positive Thinking" you will enhance your spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical life. This is a book for Jews, Christians, Muslims, and any other religion that believes in a loving God.

  • Disappointing
    By A25SFQN1KP34L on 2005-11-06
A disappointment despite all the good reviews. Not recommended for anyone yet ready for any religious materials.

Very disappointing & deceiving title of the book.

  • All time positive best seller
    By A16P2L8PGA6XI8 on 2006-06-29
This is a great book. A book that can be of help to a teenager , an employee, a businessman, a live in mom or to a retiree. The book tells of changing our attitudes by the way we think. Norman writes that by thinking positive thoughts we draw in positive results and in the same way we draw in negative results by thinking negative thoughts. Its more like a magnet pulling iron towards itself. Therefore the bible says as a man thinks in his heart, so he is. As i said before a really great book otherwise it would not have been an all time positive best selling book.

  • The Power of Positive Thinking
    By on 2002-12-31
After years of reading self-help type books with just OK results, I discovered The Power of Positive Thinking. This is the most powerful self-help book I've ever read - it's turned my life around! I now have confidence, courage, self-love, great self-esteem, and stress and anxiety no longer run my life, and it's really helped my business!

Of course you can't just read this book, you'll need to take notes and do the exercises on a daily basis. It took me 3 months to work through the book and the benefits have grown steadily. Although it's all about tapping into the power of God to help you, you don't have to be Christian to do that - I'm not. But you do need to be able to connect with God, the Great Spirit, Mother Goddess, the Universal God Force, or whoever. In other words, you do need to accept a higher power, so if you want help but are offended by quotes from the bible and talk of connecting with Christ, get over it. The whole point is that we need God and He/She is ready and willing to help and empower us if we simply ask and believe. It's so easy! I can't say enough good about this book - so buy more than 1 copy, you'll want to give it to your favorite negative friends!

P.S. Peale has written lots more books, and from what I've read, they're all great, but so far I'd say The Power of Positive Thinking is the most important.

  • Highly disappointed by religious overtones
    By A3EDE1V1S5370J on 2001-01-10
I read half of the book and could not go on any longer. It was splashed with references to "God" and "Believing in Christ" and I could not turn a page without seeing at least 2 references to religion, namely Christianity. I happen to be an atheist, and the religious overtones of this book highly offended me simply because I bought the book having no idea that it was supposed to be this religious. Nowhere on the back covers or the introduction was religion mentioned at all. I believe the methods that the publishers used to market this book was highly misleading. Therefore accounts for the single star I believe this book deserves. And for you, Norman Peale, if you want to indulge in your religious rendezvous in the future, I suggest you not mislead or lie to the readers in your introductions to the book and place the book under "Religion."

  • A great book ! Written by a great man!...
    By A16J5497HUJE2W on 2001-05-12
When I first read the first few pages of this book, my instant reaction was that this was bull!. All this talk about "God" and "Christianty", really made me uncomfortable because I am Buddhist and not a Christian. However, after giving this book a thorough read, I have come to the conclusion that the principles in this book could be applied to virtually any religon - and not just Christianity. It has even helped improve the understanding of my own religon, by relating the parables and pharaphrases found in this book!. And even if you're not a religous man - that's okay too!. The principles and the success tips in this book are guarnteed to help improve your life! No matter what it is you're doing!

The reason why I like this success book so much, is because it helps an average man develop a sense of spiritualness if he wants to. Faith, in my opinion, provides greater motivation than all motivational books combined. As Sir John Templeton said: "If we have not developed a reservoir of spiritual wealth, no amount of money is likely to make us happy."

Religous or non-religous. If you really want a great motivational book that has the potential for a permanent life change for the better than I suggest you give this book an honest try.

I hope this was helpful to you.

  • IT'S NOT WHAT YOU MIGHT THINK...

  • Changed My Life
    By ANZQUE6TY2ALJ on 2006-04-23
This book has definitely changed my life. I recommend it to anyone who is at a low especially. It has given me a new outlook on life and helped me become a positive person. I was very jumpy, nervous, even depressed before, this book really helped me to take my time and calm down. I now know that I can handle things much better

  • Change your thoughts, change your life!
    By A1RTR66ZBY6T44 on 2007-08-30
This book is one of the best (if not the best) books I've read on self-improvement. No fancy jargon. No gimmicks. Easy to read without being dry and boring (like some self-improvement books out there). Also, the author is a christian, so it's from a christian perspective.

Just recently read it again...read it for the first time about 15 years ago, (when I was 16) and I'm convinced I would be a different person had I never done so. It changed the way I think for the better. So much of it makes so much sense. After all, we are the results of what we think, and if we can decide our thoughts every minute of every day, why not make them great thoughts??!!
I love Abraham Lincoln's quote (which Peale references in the book) which sums it up nicely:
"Most people are about as happy as they make their minds up to be."

    Everyone should read this book!

  • The Power of 'Believe in Yourself'
    By A3AKWA5CWSKOOH on 2002-08-02
Opening words of Norman Vincent Peale in this book says all "Believe in Yourself & Have faith in your Abilities." Millions of people read the book and its a master piece through ages. The Book reflects the positive power of wisdom that defeat is not a root cause for a down trend. It suggests techniques and gives examples which demonstrate that one can have peace of mind, better health and never ceasing flow of energy to face the hardships and tragedies in life with the power of Positive thinking. A mental diet for every human with creative living based on spiritual techniques, Peale's system outlines perfect and amazing method of successful living. Thoughts inflow remake 'You', the very person who is responsible to create his own happiness and this is what Peale explains through various topics. Its time to stop fuming and fretting when things go wrong and break the worry habits. Faith is healing and a the best prescription for heartache is the Physical activity, says Norman. He elaborates the power technique that there is no point to sit and brood instead Get Set Right with action and be constructive. Norman shows the power to solve personal problems with a belief that there is a solution for every problem, keep calm instead of tension blocking the flow of thought power, trust in the faculty of insight and intuition, seek god's guidance and he would flash illumination into the problem mind. It's expecting the Best to Get Best as Positive Thinking is the road to happiness. Norman's book is simly a practical, direct-action, personal improvement manual and written with sole objective to help readers achieve a happy, satisfying and worthwhile life. A must Pick and a must Read Book.

  • "Nothing on earth is greater..."
    By A1CITRQE2HRW45 on 2004-06-26
"than the human mind in potential power." NVP

A Peale classic!!! Another spring cleaning survivor! My copy has been rained on etc. but not ruined! I'm not throwing this one out.

I first read this many, many moons ago in college. My father had passed away during that time and I was unsure I would be able to complete my studies. My mind was flooded with so many worries. My sister gave me this book to read and whenever I would regress to my woe is me mode of thinking, she would snap, "Go read your positive thinking book."!

I've since read other Norman Vincent Peale books and they're all written on the same lines. I would classify them as self-help books but upon a christian foundation; Norman Vincent Peale was a protestant pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. The power of positive thinking was published in 1952.

My only criticism, and the reason NVP fell from a 5 star grace to 4 is that his ideas fit too much into the traditional American idea of working your way to success and not into the biblical one. The goal of the christian is to become more christ-like in character, not to become a financial success in the American marketplace. But surely there are some people who are genuine christians and are successful that way. But the main thing is the inner character which should reflect Christ's.

The sixth chapter on "fuming and fretting" contains my personal favorite verse to meditate on when my mental balance is being tipped: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee"-Isaiah 26:3. Obviously, I accepted and applied Norman Vincent Peale's practical advice to meditate on and repeat that verse as an antidote to such a mental state. It works for me but might not work for others, if you do not fully comprehend what that 'Thee' (God) is all about. If you don't know who the biblical God is, grab a Bible and read! It's the only book I've read ten times from cover to cover.

  • Very christian pep book. Not as good as prayer.
    By ANHJPZHDX9UN8 on 2005-09-18
A bit to much jesus and too little real inspiration otherwise. I suppose that this is a good book if this is what you're looking for, but useless if you're not looking a christian message.
