'The day before Christmas,
snuggled on his floor,
Bear sleeps soundly
With a great big snore. ...'
Poor Bear! He's never seen a Christmas because of his hibernation habit. This year, his forest friends vow to wake him up and keep him up for their Christmas celebration. Karma Wilson's story with Jane Chapman's gorgeous illustrations of the Beautimous Bear and all his furry and feathered friends is sure to become one of your children's Christmas favorites. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer
At my house we love Bear By AJMUFBD325GQ2 on 2004-09-30
If your child loves Bear Snores On, you have to get this book. It follows along the same line as Bear Snores On, except this time Bear wants to stay awake and celebrate Christmas with his friends. On the day before Christmas all of his friends( mouse, badger, mole, raven and wren) come to his lair to wake him up.They all pitch in keeping bear awake and preparing for the holiday.Another wonderful Bear story. The text flows just as smoothly as Bear Snores On, and it has the same style of beautiful illustrations. This is sure to be a favorite of any fan of Bear.
BEAR IS BACK!!! By A2JP0URFHXP6DO on 2005-01-19
My 2 year old recently got Bear Snores On for his birthday. A delightful book about a big bear, fast asleep in his lair that becomes over-crowded with other animals of the forest in short order as they eventually wake up bear and become friends.
Bear Stays up for Christmas is the wonderful sequel by karma Wilson. Wilson's clever and funny rhyming prose keeps the kids interested and Jane Chapman's gorgeous illustrations make this one another classic. This time, although Bear wants to sleep again through Christmas, his friends (Mouse, Badger, Hare, Raven, Mole...and the rest) won't let him. The group gets in the spirit by decorating a tree, hanging stockings and wrapping presents.
Another great "Bear" book and a holiday one to boot. My son just loves these!
Really cute book! By AINTQXY3NSM3B on 2004-11-24
This book is really cute about a bear who wants to stay up for Christmas and his friends help him stay up until his friends fall asleep and then the bear has a few surprises for everyone! My girls ages 4 and 2 really like this book! The pictures are so pretty too!
My favorite By A334R6H8Q7ASF6 on 2005-09-07
This book is a favorite of mine and my children. The illustrations are beautiful and the book just gives you a warm, cozy feeling. We read it year-round, not just for Christmas.
- Another great story!

I don't know if I love the prose by Wilson or the incredible illustrations by Chapman more! The combination of the 2 has made another Bear book much requested in my home.
- An absolute MUST for your reading collection
     By A37PLL1VG8AR1H on 2006-03-31
Let me start by saying that I get goose bumps at the end of this book EVERY time I read it to my daughter, who is now 4. The illustrations and the rhymes are so wonderful. This was the first of the Bear books that I had read, and I ran right out to get the others, which are all equally fantastic. You won't be disappointed with this one. I am anxiously awaiting the release of Karma's next Bear book...
- An Ideal Very Short Bedtime Story:3.5 stars
     By A2FV4Y4I7BBL6I on 2008-10-23
"Bear Stays Up For Christmas" is designed for very young readers (the publisher recommends up to second grade). A child who has just learned to read would find this fairly easy with a few challenging words. It is a light story about a bear who wakes up (from assumed hibernation) in time to prepare for Christmas with his animal friends. He is still so sleepy, his friends try all sorts of things to keep him awake. Staying up for Christmas is something most children yearn to do, so they should identify with the theme. It is a very simple storyline with very simple rhyming verses. The artwork is okay but not memorable. There are better books out there, especially Christmas stories that have more depth, detail and superior art work. That is why I cannot give it a higher rating. What is winning about this one is its length and simplicity. It is an ideal bedtime story, very short and sweet. Perfect for a parent or grandparent bonding experience.
- Cute children's book
     By A3SHC6UZ0752WL on 2007-10-08
My son loves this book. The drawings are very colorful which makes it nice to read to even small children. It has a sweet, funny message about friendship. It is not a book about the true meaning of Christmas which is all about Jesus, of course. However, it is about friendship and love which are what Christmas is about as well. Therefore, I believe it is a cute, fun book for kids ages 2-8.
- Cute read for little kids
     By AXVKMYWNIHK7W on 2008-10-20
Bear stays Up, is a cute book about a bear that's hybernating during the Christmas season, and his buddies decide to help him stay up to celebrate the big event. He bakes cookies, and brings in a Christmas tree, and he decorates it with his animal friends while waiting for Santa to come. Although all his animal freinds fall asleep in the night, Bear stays up and waits for Christmas morning while making presents for his friends. A cute book for kids 18 mos. and up. This book is a hard cover book written by Karma Wilson. Very cute and highly recommended. We got it in the mail today and it's already been read twice!
- Christmas with Bear & His Friends
     By A2TXMYYGSZCSZ1 on 2008-10-21
I received my copy of "Bear Stays Up for Christmas" today and I am as excited as a kid. I love this sequel to Bear Snores On which I also own. The grandkids will love this book when we read it tomorrow. As I read the book for the first time I was smiling with delight and saying "Ooooh, this is sooo cute!"
In "Bear Snores On" several animals from the woods gather in bear's cave to escape the cold winter night. In this book they gather together once again as friends to celebrate Christmas. Once again parents have the opportunity to explain how bear's hibernate, and why it is difficult for bear to stay awake. In this book the friends sing "O Holy Night" remembering that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, and Santa appears too. They decorate, cook, cut down a Christmas tree, exchange gifts and share a meal like a typical Christmas celebration.
As in all the books about Bear, Illustrator Jane Chapman has done a beautiful job of illustrating this story for children.
- ------Lucky Bear to have such good friends-----
     By A2EMP366TTS6E1 on 2008-10-22
Bears are pretty predictable and they need to sleep a lot during the winter. However, this year Bear's animal friends decided to wake him up on Christmas Eve so that he can enjoy Christmas Day! Mouse, Hare, Badger, Gopher, Mole, Raven and Wren are a colorful group of animals.
The story is told in rhyme and the animals all convince Bear that he must stay up and keep moving. They want to give him a wonderful Christmas and decorate his den. Together they find a Christmas tree, make decorations and sing Christmas carols and Bear stays up! After awhile, the animals fall asleep, one by one, but not Bear. He stays busy all night making surprises for his friends. When morning comes all the animals find that Bear made them presents and that Santa had also been there. One final gift is given and it's for Bear. A charming patchwork quilt to keep him warm. He's covered up by his friends and settles down for a nice long sleep.
I liked the way the animals showed concern for Bear and wanted to do something special for him. I think that was a good way to show that it's important to do something nice for another person. A kind act is another type of gift! As a quilter, I enjoyed seeing the quilt show up at the end of the story. Not sure who made it though, was it Santa or the animals? Quilting animals, maybe for another story.
I think this is a sweet Christmas story and has a lovely message for children.
- very cute Christmas story
     By A2RIAXGSBP65BJ on 2008-10-23
This is a very cute Christmas story. In a nutshell, Bear typically hibernates through Christmas and this year has his friends wake him up so he can celebrate with them. It's a good book for preschoolers with only a sentence or two per page, a lot of rhymes, and pictures with great details. If you're wondering, I wouldn't call it secular or religious. It mentions the carol "O Holy Night" (by name only) and has a brief visit from Santa. The focus is on the friendships. I have a two-year-old and a five-year-old, they both enjoy this book, but the little one has asked for it more times.
There is one line in the verse that is grammatically incorrect to force a rhyme. This is minor of course (the kids won't even notice), but since preschool books tend to be read over and over, it might grate on some moms or dads.
- Terrific for Two Year Olds too!
     By A2FWI3T07250WR on 2006-11-20
I bought this book for my two year old and what a great choice! The rhyme is easy to read, the illustrations delightful. This is definitely one of the frequent requested favorites even after months of reading and re-reading, so a great buy.
Although at first its his friend's keeping him awake, Bear ends up doing nice things for his friends while they sleep and he STAYS AWAKE on his own. Great story about giving and sharing and friendship.
Never tire of reading it and its definitely for two year olds too. I will be looking to add other Bear stories this Christmas.
- One of the best books

I just love this author and artist. We read this book and the others in the series all the time. The pictures are phenomenal and the words just flow so well. My kids love this book but I do also. One of the few that I myself enjoy reading. I would highly recommend all the books by this author.
- nice book

This is a very cute book with wonderful illustrations, but I will say that it was not as enjoyable to read as Bear Snores On. That one is just the BEST! Too, too cute! But this is a nice book.
- Great book!

This is by far my favorite book to read to my 2 year old son. The illustrations are amazing and the words rhyme perfectly. I love reading it to him all year long and actually gave it as Christmas gifts to two of my friends with young children. Fun for the kids and the parents. A definite winning purchase!
- cute book

I bought this for my kids(4,3,and1) for christmas. I always buy a christmas book and we read it on christmas eve before bed. They really enjoyed this and we have read it many times since. It appeals to a wide age range and it's a book I don't mind reading a couple nights in a row.

     By A1H9HTDAGCOACX on 2007-01-20
I am a preschool teacher, and one of my all time favorite children's books is Bear Snores On, so I knew I would love Bear Stays Up for Christmas, and I did! All of my grandchildren got it for Christmas!
- Hard to beat the magic of "Bear Snores On".....
     By A383PPSVXNB0NB on 2007-02-05
.....but this one comes close. This time the wanna-be hibernator is kept up by his friends to help get ready for, and then enjoy, Christmas. The story is perfect winter-time reading with your whosits as it follows Bear and his buddies on their Christmas Eve adventures. And the bottom line is that when the ankle biter demographic gives it their "thumbs up" it has to be good. Highly recommended.
- A Beautiful Christmas Story

- Great seasonal read
     By A388C7DD1OMRZY on 2007-03-15
I was hesitant to get this book because we really liked the Bear Wants More. I was afraid we'd be disapointed. After all - it's a holiday season book and what could you put into that!
We were not disapointed. In fact - we quite enjoyed it. And my kindergardener read this one by himself. We enjoyed the picutres and the story equally.
- You don't want to go to sleep at Christmas-time, until you read this!
     By A2P3Y7YA30U1IO on 2007-07-31
This is one of my favorite Christmas Books. I just love the illustrations, and the rhyming text. Of all the Bear boks so far, I find that this one is my favorite. I love how sweet the relationship is between Bear and his friends. Another reason I like it, is this: What child doesn't, at some point in his life, try to stay up all night to catch a glimpse at Santa. I think every child can relate to Bear's desire to stay up all night.
My favorite part of the book is when Bear's friends surprise him with a very warm and thoughtful gift!
I think you'll want to stay up too, and be sure to read this one to your children!

Author of "Hobo Finds A Home"
- Read it so often that I have it memorized!
     By A3IGIFJ6LGDVPO on 2007-12-27
My 17-month old son Nate LOVES LOVES LOVES this book. He calls it " Mas" short for Christmas. We're read it SO often that I now have it memorized. The "tempo" or rhyme rhythm would remind you so much of "Twas the night before Christmas." Nate gets a kick out of being able to identify the animals in the beautiful illustrations. I have to admit though, now that it's after Christmas, I've hidden the book because we've just read it SO much!
- Wonderful
