  • Good basic math review

    By AV9ZY81TCD2KW on 2006-12-03
This book offers a good overview of the math tested on the GRE General Test. It's essentially an overview of math concepts learned in high school - but this is the level of math tested on the general test. (Only the GRE Math Subject Test tests more advanced concepts like calculus.) If you are like me and have not taken any sort of math class in years and would like a refresher in Algebra and Geometry to prepare for the GRE General Test, then this book is a good place to start.

It provides overviews of the concepts - including how to apply them to the specific kinds of questions you will see on the GRE - and there are lots of practice problems, which are divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels so you can focus on the level you're at in each section. The difficulty levels of the problems are comparable to the difficulty levels of the practice problems you can download from the ETS site itself. (The main difference is that the Kaplan book offers many more practice problems.)

However, if you already have a solid understanding of high school level math concepts, then even the most advanced problems in this book will seem easy. The Barron's "How to Prepare for the GRE" book is a much better book for practicing difficult math problems and upping your chances for an 800 in math. Overall, the Kaplan math workbook offers more practice problems than any other study resource I came across and is a great place to start if you're not already at the advanced level in math. It's also sufficient enough to use as your only math preparation if you're not aiming for the 800 level.

  • Use this book for astounding results!

    By AQFXIRYHIE82D on 2007-10-02
I bought this book in an attempt to review high school math concepts that I hadn't used in over a decade. It far exceeded my expectations. There are chapters for basic review of each of the math concepts tested on the GRE--and most helpful, at the end of the book, there are 3 chapters that combine all the concepts into problem solving questions exactly like those that are likely to appear on the test iteself. Furthermore, the explanations are clear and easy to understand. I took the GRE last week and was stunned when I saw my math scores. I have already recommended this book to friends who are long out of high school!

  • Basic and Incomplete

    By A3FIZI590M0UFO on 2006-11-17
This book only contains 4 sections with problems and explanations: Arithmetic, Algebra, Word Problems, and Graphs. The problems are basic and are not for college math majors. I have taken practice GRE tests and this book fails to include anything past algebra 1. It's missing calculus and beyond (basically most of the test). Not recommended unless you need help with your high school math homework.

1 star for basically being a waste of money to me and not helping me with the GRE.

  • Shouldn't have started with this...

This book didn't really work for me. One of the things that frustrated me most was that the information provided in the chapters (which is really long and which I read all of) didn't prepare me much at all for the practice questions/tests or for the questions I saw on the actual GRE. I spent practically all of my allotted study time reading these long chapters thinking they would fill me in on what I don't know about math (which is a lot), but really they just cover the most basic things in the GRE-impractical order of theme (arithmetic, algebra, geometry), without giving you a clue how to decide what skills to use on the more complex problems of the GRE (fine, I understand how to use FOIL, but I have no idea how to figure out when to use it on the test). Another problem is that the explanations in the answer key are hard to understand (the jump between the difficulty level of the chapter information and the problems/explanations in most of the chapters is so great it seems like they weren't written together at all), and there are also mistakes in the answer key (#7 in the lines and angles test, for example). I also found it annoying that the author of the chapters seems more concerned with providing his/her version of a solid background in basic GRE-level math than with actually preparing us for the test (for example, insisting on using math terms instead of plain English in situations where plain English would work just as well, or including unnecessary information - on page 35, "you'll never actually have to calculate the standard deviation on test day, but here's how it's calculated...," etc.). In retrospect, I really wish I had started with the free GRE Powerprep software and its Math Review, which is a 69-page free pdp file. What I used of Kaplan's Premier Edition book/CD also seemed pretty good. Maybe after all of that, if I'd had months to study, the difficult practice questions in this math workbook could have been handy. Reading it from the beginning like I did, though, was a terrible waste of my time.

i love, love, love what kaplan has done for us with the math workbook. i haven't taken math for more than four years and so i was beyond rusty, but this book really does what it claims to do: it goes step by step and has easy to understand explanation for every question so even the math inept can pass the gre

  • Great math review for non-math people.
    By A3BQCI5NFF4SGG on 2007-07-22
This book was really an excellent review for the GRE general test math section. I really am horrible at math, and I was dreading taking the GRE because I thought my math score would really bring me down. I didn't start using the book until a week before the test (after not taking a math course for two years) and it definitely prepared me. It helps you look for "tricks" in the quantitative section - such as problems when they don't necessarily want you to work out some complicated problem but rather see in simple ways how the two columns equal. This was such a help to me, as I would probably have tried to work out all these crazy problems without realizing there are simple solutions.

The best way to use it is to read the explanations, and then look at lots of the sample problems to help you see how to work them. Some of the explanations I don't think were the best (thus the "4 star" rating) but the tons of examples makes up for this.

I just took the GRE, and I ended up doing great on the math section! When I saw my score I actually laughed because I assumed it had to be wrong... :)

So yes -- great little review for someone taking the GRE general test that really needs to go through all those things (like fractions heh) that they perhaps haven't done in years and just need a refresher on what the heck all that math crap means ;)

    Good luck taking those tests!

  • Not as comprehensive as I expected it to be.
    By A1POFVVXUZR3IQ on 2008-06-17
If you're looking for a book to prep you for the quantitative section of the GRE, this workbook by Kaplan is not a comprehensive prep book. I personally found Barron's to be the best guide in helping me with the Math section of the GRE. I bought this book thinking it would a good practice book, but I found it to be average and the practice questions are much easier than the questions I found on the actual GRE.

  • not too great
    By A3JWOWGGLRS9HY on 2008-04-24
I thought this would be a complete math review but it doesn't even go through the probabilities and the questions are way easier than the actual tests. If you have no knowledge of the math part it would work but if you are looking for high math score this is definitely not enough.

  • Good, But Not Challenging Enough For Top Scorers
    By A5155DSQ8QWJ7 on 2007-08-09
Despite typos that make a few isolated problems, and a few entire pages, unusable, this is a useful tool for preparing for the quantitative portion of the GRE. The graded problems build confidence, and the solutions sometimes provide multiple strategies for attacking a problem.

However, as someone attempting to score 800, I felt that much of my time was wasted on the simpler problems. Also, more specific advice about test conditions during the exam and strategies for budgeting time might have been useful. Overall, this book is a good value for the money, but additional preparation might be necessary for those trying to eke out those last few points on the test.

This book is of immense help.I have to take the exam shortly and this book will give me a lot of Math practice.

  • Expected more and got less.
    By A5L6Z79SW9025 on 2008-03-09
Generally this is good book, however the book does not provide any XY plane, permutation and combination, arithmetic sequence and probability questions. These questions appeared frequently on the actual test.

  • does not go far enough
    By A1NUIBK1KEQWRL on 2008-03-22
The explanations are good as far as they go, but they do not explain some of the harder math that shows up on the GRE like permutations and more advanced algebra. I took the GRE today and, although I scored 800 on both sections, the math definitely felt more difficult than the 'advanced' problems I had looked at in this book last night. I was shocked when I got my score and I guess I was lucky, but if you want to be sure of doing really well, I would look for more challenging practice and in depth review than this book provides.

  • DON'T
    By A2Y4VCDXVBZ5QQ on 2008-06-03
Don't waste your time and money buying this book! It wasn't helpful at all! I found that Baaron's Math part is really comprehensive and educative. This book is very easy and has nothing to do with real GRE exam. I would also recommend to subscribe for some internet quiz to do better on actual test. Good luck everyone!

Amazon was great in delivering it. The book itself is okay.

  • Generally good
    By A17M7HBUUMI2HF on 2008-01-18
I havent taken the GRE yet but this book seems to be helpful. It provides a brief overview of every little piece that we should know to tackle the real GRE ( as my friend said) and plus the answers are clear to understand + some tips are helpful as well.
