  • Dancing animal book is a winner with my 1 year old son!

    By on 1999-08-06
My son Ian is now 17 months old and during his short lifetime, my wife and I have bought Ian many books for him to read and enjoy. One of Ian's alltime favorite books is Sandra Boynton's "Barnyard Dance."

There are several reasons why Ian loves this particlar book. First, Ian loves Sandra Boynton's whimsical animal illustrations. To see a cow or a pig or a mouse done a la Boynton never fails to elicit a giggle from Ian.

Second, the story has a nice rhyme and cadence to it. Kids seem to love a book that flows well.

Finally, what Ian really likes about this book is the way Ms. Boynton has the animals dancing and prancing about. My wife taught Ian to "dance" the way the animals in the story dance and everytime we read the book, Ian always follows along by dancing and prancing just like the animals. It is priceless.

  • One of Grace's top ten!

    By A33LUK9GH347OP on 2001-05-16
Our one year old baby, Grace, has enjoyed this book for several months and loves it more and more each time she hears it. The illustrations are fun, each animal has a cute expression, and the rhythm of the lyrics snaps right along. "Stomp your feet, clap your hands! Everybody ready for a Barnyard Dance!" This is the opening line and from there we read about the twirls of each animal: the moos of the cows, the chirps of the birds, and their various dance steps. It's an easy book to read with lots of expression, and it's fun to make the animal sounds along with the child. We read this book dozens of times a day and it's a huge favorite!

  • A wonderful story and activity book combined!

    By AK7CAW3N1XZV6 on 2004-12-10
Another winner from Sandra Boynton! This wonderful book combines her classic, adorable animal characters with square dance-like commands to make it a participatory activity. Even the youngest of toddlers should be able to follow the simple instructions such as "bow to the horse - bow to the cow." As they get older, they will love repeating the fun sound effects as well, from "cheep cheep cheep!" to "quack quack quack!" Of course, each stanza also rhymes beautifully, further delighting the little ones and making it a joy to read for parents. When my niece was about 20 months old, she never tired of hearing this book and doing the dance--there was nothing cuter than seeing her do her little bow to start it off! This book will provide hours of fun for both the kids AND the adults--highly recommended!

  • GREAT FUN

    By A30H2335OM7RD6 on 2001-09-21
This is a fun book to read.

I look for books that have simple pictures that help tell the story. (I believe sometimes the pictures in childrens' books get too distracting with too many things going on.) I look for books that have bright colors that keep my child interested in the pages. I look for books that we can do more than just read the book.

This book fits all those catagories. This pictures are simple and yet exciting enough that the keep my child's attention. We like to try to act out the dance the animals are doing after we have read the book. Sometimes we sing this book to a country music type of tune. The rythm of this book makes it a lot of fun to read. We are able to count the animals, make the sounds the animals make and in general have a great time with this book.

All of the books by Boynton are fun. However, this is among my son's favorite books.

  • Your baby will love this funny, little, board book!

    By A1E7QLJVWNFOZY on 2002-05-16
This is my FAVORITE Boynton book! It is just plain SILLY; square dancing with farm animals. Indelibly endearing, the characters come alive when the fiddle-playing cow begins to sing, "Bow to the horse. Bow to the cow. Twirl with the pig if you know how." The rhythm is so musical, it's addictive, and GREAT fun to read aloud, or sing as in my case. "Prance with the horses, skitter with the mice. Swing with your partner once or twice." Simple, silly, animation; your baby will love this funny, little, board book! As an education tool, children will learn to recognize farm animals, and associate simple verbs to the action, such as bow, bounce, swing, and leap. WARNING: Barnyard Dance! may cause dancing, and the reader may develop a musical twang. Birth and up.

  • Wonderful! This book is a must for toddlers of all ages.
    By AHPSC2XQHAH28 on 1998-02-11
Barnyard Dance was given to my son three years ago as a baby gift and remains one of our family favorites. The square dance rhythm is exciting to hear and fun to read. The Boynton barnyard animals enjoy the dance, and so will you. Your foot will be tapping and your child will be dancing before you are finished reading. This book is now a must as part of every new baby gift we give.

  • My favorite
    By ANT0HRWDLBPSE on 2002-02-27
My son is 11 months old, and the first Boynton book we got was Moo! Baa! La-la-la! He loves that one, laughing and giggling. And he's enjoyed every other Boynton book I've bought him (they're addictive!) But this one - Barnyard Dance is our favorite to date! I was reading it to him tonight and trying to kind of sing it, and he was bouncing and pointing and smiling. And I couldn't help but laughing with him. It's really as fun as it gets.

This book is terrific. Buy it.

  • Another fun Boynton book
    By on 1999-09-16
I bought this one based on the recommendations I read here. I would have to say that this is one of my top three favorite Boynton children's books... the other two are _Horns to Toes_ and _1,2,3_. This has the same sort of catchy rhyme of the other two books, which can't help but entice my daughter to participate... and learn!

  • Among the best and most loved at our house
    By A3NDFNKBEBLUKS on 2001-08-29
I've been a fan of Sandra Boynton since the late 1970s. I was delighted to discover that she has written this extensive array of wonderful children's books. My son (now 14 months old - we've been reading this one for about 7 months) loves this one in particular. The cut-out front is fun to stick little fingers through, and the illustrations and rhythm of the text are fun to read and to listen to. He sometimes gets up and dances! He will pull this book out from among a pile of others when asked what he wants to read. You have to see the animals to appreciate Sandra Boynton's genius - the look on the face of the hen being 'swung by [her] partner' is hilarious.

  • My daughter smiles when I pick up this book!
    By A1ZGJRSNMY68Q on 1999-11-11
She is only 4 months old, but I have been reading to her for 6 weeks. Of approximately 12 books we read, this is her favorite - she laughs and smiles as we go through the pages. A "must have" for your library.

  • Fun For All!
    By A2L1NV76E8380Y on 2003-04-06
This is a great board book--perfect for infants and toddlers (and up!) It has cute animal illustrations as well as rhyming lines. My daughter was read this book when she was days old and it is still one of her favorites at age five. Also, I find that it makes the perfect baby shower present.

  • Buy this book!!! See your toddler dance, skitter, & prance!
    By on 1999-08-20
This is my favorite book. You know, I think my toddler loves it too.

This is a great read, as you call out a barnyard squaredance, your toddler will love to act it out.

Very creative, with fun familiar animal names and a variety of actions (bow, clap, skitter, scramble, prance, slide) and a few good animal noises

  • My Personal Favorite Board Book
    By A1YU5HUR0R3OQ6 on 2002-03-23
This book has such great rhythm and rhyme! Nothing but silly fun! This book can easily be read in a kind of song manor, which is a lot of fun for toddlers. Your child will not only have fun, but learn about different animals and some verbs too, like stomp, clap, twirl, bow and more!

"Stomp your feet and clap your hands,
everybody ready for a barnyard dance."

  • One you won't get tired of reading!
    By on 2002-10-14
This is a wonderful little book that both my husband and I enjoy reading to our one year old little boy. We have just reached that stage where he wants his favorite books read over and over (and OVER!). Fortunately, this is one that he wants read, and we enjoy reading! It has fun rhymes and a catchy rhythm. The illustrations are great, and our baby loves identifying all of the different farm animals (my personal favorite is the fiddle playing cow in sunglasses!). Bottom line - one of the best kids books we own!

  • GREAT BOOK!!!!
    By on 2004-09-15
I bought this book for my son when he was 8 months old. Now he's 2 and he picks the books to read before bed. Every night this is the first book he picks from the shelf and we must read it several times. He loves the rhythm, words, and pictures. He learned his animals from this book. I highly recommend it.

  • A Favorite!
    By A2OD1OTPY7DFF6 on 2004-09-16
This peppy little book full of fun dancing barnyard animals has become an absolute favorite for both of my kiddos. I've learned from listening to my brother-in-laws attempt, though, that it's definitely best read in a kind of sing-songy way with some rhythm! My kids memorized it easily and love to tap to the beat while laughing at the sillly characters. Fun every time!

  • Lots of dancing fun
    By A2FS38D943KX12 on 2005-01-26
If you have a toddler that enjoys music, rhythm & dancing like our 18-month-old, this book will be a big hit. After reading this book, our daughter loves to get down on the floor and do a little dance herself. This can continue for some time, so if you want to burn up an afternoon, you could do worse than this book.

  • Great Book!!!!!!!
    By A3H0ZQ74ITU83J on 2005-02-02
We love most of Boynton's books, but this one is really wonderful! My two girls (5 and 3) made up their own dance to match the book. I can't believe how much fun we have reading a book.

  • ANOTHER WINNER FROM SANDRA
    By A2JP0URFHXP6DO on 2005-03-08
Sandra Boyntons books have become favorites in our house for our 2 1/2 year old. Barnyard Dance is another hit. This, like her other books have their trademark hilarious and silly illustrations as barnyard animals big and small dance about as a cow plays a fiddle. Accompanying the colorful and lively illustrations is sandra's witty and whimsical rhymes. Cows, ducks, chickens, pigs, horses, sheep...all singing and dancing about. Kids just get a big kick out of all of it. Great fun and fun to read.

This is one of those very sturdy board books that will stand up to any abuse your young one can throw at it. Another winner from Sandra!

  • Wonderful
    By AYTO90C91IJ3W on 2005-06-01
This has been one of my daughter's favorites for a very long time. She is now three and still never tires of Boynton's colorful, and fun books. My one year old son loves her books too. We have several and this is one of the very best. She writes with such a rhythm that you can not help singing her books much to the delightful squeals of my two little ones. This short story is about farm animals square dancing and we act out the various animal dance moves each time we read it. I usually give Boynton and Richard Scarry books for baby gifts and first birthday gifts, especially for new moms who may not have discovered them yet. You can't go wrong with either of these two authors.

  • Barnyard Dance
    By on 2000-05-03
I've been reading this book to my son since he was 1 month old. He's now 5 months and he loves this book. I've tried reading other books to him, but he loses interest except for "Moo, Baa, La La La" and "The Going To Bed Book", also by Sandra Boynton. It's also a favorite for my sister and her two children, ages 4 and 3.

  • Love Barnyard Dance
    By A2RNPTAQHVN38P on 2000-04-06
I enjoy almost all of Sandra Boynton's books. Barnyard Dance always lifts my spirits as I read it to my 5 month-old son. I look forward to reading this book over and over to him and can't wait until he can read it with me! Sandra's books are fun, educational and easy to read.

  • We read this EVERY night
    By on 2000-03-09
This is my daughter's FAVORITE book. We have to read it every night...at least once! The rythmn is perfect for soothing a very active and stubborn 8 month old into getting ready for bed!

  • Get out your dancing shoes!
    By on 2000-11-19
My 21 month old daughter and I LOVE this book! We do a little song and dance to it and we have so much fun together. Dad likes to join us, too. In fact, Grandma liked it so much she had to get a copy for herself. My daughter loves this book so much she practically can do the dance without it. When it's time to promenade (in the story) we hug each other and give a big kiss. I think that's her favorite part of the story. This a must have for every child's library! It's awesome!

  • Barnyard Dance! by Sandra Boynton
    By A18L4T8CYANKHO on 2001-04-24
This book was my children's love at first sight, and I just couldn't help writing a short review. Extremely easy to repeat and memorize for my toddler, funny and cute for my 7-year-old to act out! Wonderful, heart-warming illustrations. There is so much charisma about these deliciously silly, easy and fun rhymes , that I actually got more books of the author! They are the top hit with our family now. Try also 'But Not the Hippopotamus', 'One, Two, Three', 'Green Hat, Blue Hat'.

  • This by far was my favorite as well as my child's
    By AOCQ60289FC2E on 2001-08-29
My daughter and I read this story together so many times we actually memorized the words. She likes for us to dance around and I sing the words like that of a square dance and we have the best time and she really thinks it is funny.

  • Barnyard Dance!
    By A3HTJ0XZ4BKRI0 on 2001-10-23
My 18-month old daughter loves this book! When I read it to her she starts stomping and clapping around the room. It's so much fun to watch her and dance with her too!

  • Barnyard Dance!
    By A3MQJNDU88XNDE on 2001-11-30
This book is so much fun! You'll want to read it over and over and over. Every kid will love it (from 1 to 101). It is great to watch the kids really get into it and start to do the Barnyard Dance all of the time. Once your toes start tappin' they will never want to stop. Parts of the book repeat themselve but it also keeps you on your toes with a simple little twist here and there. It's not to long, so even the youngest little one will love it over and over again.

  • One of our favorites!
    By A2AH0C9JD7Z9QU on 2002-01-18
Our son received a number of Sandra Boynton books as gifts when he was born, and we love this one especially! It doesn't matter who is reading it - that person becomes a square dance caller. Our son loves to hear our voices, see the pictures, and swing his arms in rhythm with the words. What fun!

  • Gave my daughter a GREAT start!
    By AU95NV02K6SUC on 2002-09-23
I believe this book was instrumental in making my daughter a reader. The cadence you achieve when reading it is catchy. My daughter is six years old now and I still have the book going through my head. We just bought it for some friends who are having twins. I'm positive it will be as loved as when we read it.
