Navigation guide for breast cancer journey By A3NX1NCYZEYAZW on 2006-02-13
I am thrilled that this book exists to help guide patient's through their cancer journey. As an oncology nurse practitioner I find that many breast cancer patient's still have questions after their consultation with their physician. This book is a wonderful tool because patient's can refer to the sections they need and take their time to fully understand their condition and treatment options. I've had several patients come into the office with many sections of the book highlighted and bookmarked. These patient's stated that they felt empowered and informed and were glad that they were able to be active participants in their cancer treatment. I highly recommend this book to anyone embarking on their cancer journey.

I found Dr. Chan's honest and open discussions about coping with the devastating news of breast cancer to be inspiring and reassuring. Not only will patients and their families benefit from this information, but I would highly recommend it for the nurses who may be envolved in their care. "Thank-you" Dr. Chan for taking the time to write such a comprehensive guide book!

A book with answers to important questions. By A2D7299DPX1G6Z on 2006-02-07
My wife has Breast Cancer, and David Chan's book has given me the answers to many questions I've had about her breast cancer. This book is in a Q & A form as well as having many informative diagrams. It reads not as a Medical text book. But rather as a guide to many of the most important questions either a patient or family member will have.It also features profiles of different breast cancer patients and explains the answers to their questions or situations. I strongly recomend David Chan's book. He is both gifted as a Doctor, and an author. Good Health to you all !! ...David Kida
Breast Cancer: Real Questions, Real Answers By AK7UMSQRQ50NC on 2006-02-08
This is a "must have" book. As I embark on my own breast cancer journey, I often am seeking answers at inopportune times, i.e. 2:00 am on Sunday morning. For those times, I found that Dr. Chan's book serves as a great resource that provides clear, understandable explanation for my concerns. This resource clarified aspects of my treatment plan (thus no surprises) and give lots of practical advice to anticipate the next step of my journey. I love the case examples. I highly recommend this book to my breast cancer peers and her support system (family and friends).
Best Wishes,
Celia Hogenson

I wish this book was available 8 years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I spent hours pouring through literature deciphering what exactly was my condition and treatment options. This book contains what Drs. spend much of their time in educating their patients, and gives a hard reference to answers that they did not know how to ask. The informative and sensitive, user-friendly format demonstrates Dr. Chan's years of experience and expertise as a practicing Oncologist.

At a time of receiving frightening/shocking health news, this book is well organized, a great reference, and easy to read and use. Best of all, it's a terrific resource when you can't remember the answer to a question you've previously asked, either because you can't find your notes or due to a temporary case of "chemo brain". Consider giving this book as a gift instead of sending flowers. As a breast cancer survivor, I wish this book had been available when I was starting my journey to wellness.

     By ADX5FJXI4JCP6 on 2007-05-16
Dr. Chan offers a clear and concise question and answer style overview of breast cancer and the many questions surrounding current treatments. He explains the four stages of breast cancer and the success of recovery along with explaining why and how chemotherapy and radiation are used to fight cancer cells. The book also offers suggestions on how to cope with the side effects of treatments and how to deal with such hard to ask questions as: how can I best communicate to my young children that I have breast cancer? Or, why do women in industrialisized nations like the U.S. have a much higher rate and risk of breast cancer than women in developing nations? Further, Dr. Chan summarizes the stories of some of his patients' experiences fighting breast cancer and offers suggestions on how to increase your chances of survival.

In the first ten minutes of reading it, I found more reassurance here than I have found from anywhere else! I trust the knowledge of Dr. Chan to help with questions of the mind and of the heart, while presenting solid facts and statistics, as well as the two most important factors for recovery: comfort and hope.

When I was first diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, my friends gave me this wonderful resource. Reading that book gave me a tremendous peace of mind. Dr. Chan had answers to questions that I didn't even know to ask. I felt relieved when I read that there has been much advancement in recent years and many options to consider in treatment.
Then I went through biopsy, lumpectomy, follow-up radiation, and then started Arimidex; my treatment went exactly as he described. I re-read those sections that pertained to me; they were informative and technical, with supporting studies and statistics. Most importantly, there was always a positive, warm tone. Dr. Chan was my guide through an anxious period. This book should be everyone's companion through a scary process.
I have purchased this book for my friends who have breast cancer and for their families to understand what's going on.
- Wonderful Resource

My wife and I have been on an emotional and psychological roller coaster since she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This book has really helped us to sort through and make sense of the terms, options, decisions and implications for treatment. It is well-written, clear, organized and cross-referenced. The case-study vignettes are particularly helpful.
In his humble, hopeful and helpful style, the author directly addresses about 285 of the most commonly-asked questions from patients seeking specifics to help address individual circumstances. He addressed all of our concerns, to the extent that we better understand the complete picture so we can chart a course of treatment with our medical team that's right for us. Thank you, Dr. Chan.
