Best Price: $16.95 $10.55

Breastfeeding is natural, but it’s not always easy. It is the biological norm, but it is not the cultural norm. By learning the seven basic principles in this book, mothers can dramatically increase their likelihood of success and make breastfeeding the enjoyable experience it should be. The seven laws taught in this book are easy for mothers to understand and are sure to help them avoid some of the pitfalls that they might otherwise face.

The seven principles include: 1. Babies Have the Urge to Self-Attach 2. Use the Power of Skin-to-Skin: A Baby’s Natural Habitat 3. Breastfeed Ad Lib 4. Reach for the Comfort Zone 5. Expect Cluster Nursing 6. More Milk Out = More Milk Made 7. Babies Outgrow Breastfeeding

The book also addresses how to solve common problems and deal with special situations such as breast reductions and babies with special needs. The authors describe some of the social, psychological, and cultural reasons why breastfeeding is not currently the norm, and what this implies for mothers. In all, this is an easy-to-use breastfeeding resource for new mothers, which includes all the latest research and techniques used by those in the lactation field. MPN: 17361 -

  • A truly outstanding breastfeeding guide

    By A2HV3S535RZ3CW on 2006-03-15
I purchased this book while researching the breastfeeding chapter in one of my forthcoming books. I immediately fell in love with this book -- specifically, with its innovative approach to the material (the seven natural laws) and its warm, supportive, and mother-friendly tone. The authors do a terrific job of explaining the root causes of many common breastfeeding problems in ways that make so much sense. Their section on how taking a "left-brained" approach to the very "right-brained" act of breastfeeding is totally brilliant. I can't praise this book highly enough.

  • For the reluctant breastfeeders...

    By A3UTF5ORM9Q4OL on 2006-09-09
I did not breastfeed my first child for more than a few weeks, but when #2 was in the NICU, I had a lot of time to read, and a lot of time to pump! This book suggests setting shorter term goals instead of the "Breastfeed for a year or else" message I seemed to hear with my first child. The book also talks about how the baby breastfeeds, not the mother, which took some of the pressure off. There was also mention of how in the U.S., Moms get a lot of support before the baby is born, but could use a little more help after the birth. A reverse Cinderella idea...very clever.
This book made breastfeeding more accessible, and I want to buy it for every new mom I meet. It was just what I needed to get over some of my nursing baggage.

  • Best Breastfeeding Book I've Read

    By ABY2NMX5HND3P on 2006-05-29
I have done a lot of reading on the topic of breastfeeding, and this book tops my favorites list! The information and research provided in this book are far more up-to-date than what you'll find in most breastfeeding books. This book helps moms understand how breastfeeding works so that they can adapt their breastfeeding relationship to their specific needs and desires. It also does an amazing job helping moms understand the "bottle-feeding culture" and how that can impact breastfeeding. I didn't find the book to be pushy at all - in fact, I thought it was very releasing and gentle. I am going to give this book as a gift to all my pregnant friends!

  • Wonderful, supportive, and informative

    By A1VLFWJS0YP68Y on 2006-04-25
This book is a great resource for nursing mothers. I am still nursing my 18 month old daughter and I wish I had read this before I started nursing. It has information that I have not seen in Dr. Sears' books or in the book by the Pediatric Society. The tips for latch on are especially helpful. I think this is a very straightforward book that makes the reader feel comfortable about the breastfeeding relationship they have with their child. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to learn more about breastfeeding.

  • My favorite breastfeeding book!

    By A2MCG4HBCCFI2Z on 2006-06-09
I have a little stack of breastfeeding books that I started accumulating when I was pregnant with my now-4-month-old, and this book is by far the most helpful one among them. It has different information than a lot of the other books out there and is very encouraging and empowering.

  • The best breastfeeding book for new mothers!
    By A35GT7BEPCBPT5 on 2007-01-08
I have read probably 90% of the breastfeeding books out there, and I still learned so much from this book! I wish it had been around when I had my first baby. I have already given two copies to friends who just had babies, and I plan to give it to other friends as well, preferably when they are still pregnant. The information is detailed and scientifically accurate; the tone is reassuring and supportive. I loved that when the authors described various choices or actions, they explained not only what would happen as a result, but also *why* that result would occur, in a logical, factual way. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

  • Breastfeeding Made Simple is an excellent choice!
    By A2E63SJPEZBB6W on 2005-11-22
I highly recommend that new mothers read Breastfeeding Made Simple. It would also be helpful for breastfeeding educators, lactation consultants, childbirth educators, labor and delivery nurses, doctors, etc. because the authors explain how babies are "hardwired" in behavior and needs, as well as how to get breastfeeding off to a good start (or what to do when there are problems). Mothers with such knowledge will feel more confident and have less difficulties than if they ignore these behaviors. As an IBCLC who has observed thousands of babies, I learned alot from this book.

  • latest and greatest
    By A38A9LV1BBNK8J on 2005-10-04
I heard the author speak about this book and I am so excited that it is available! They do a great job of explaining the reasons why for all their advice. I think that "the why" really helps moms remember and actually follow their advice. Well researched and the latest and best information!

  • Preachy, but had some good info
    By A2Y8GQ14N95F0X on 2006-05-03
If you roll your eyes at crunchy-granola phrases like "the dance of breastfeeding" then you won't be able to stomach this book. It talks a lot about how the formula companies are unethical and even references formula to be as bad as smoking??? I was uncomfortable with such a close-minded view.
Most of the information was very good, as far as latch-on etc, but the photos look like they were taken in the 70's and are not helpful. The book repeats itself and never really answers the difficult questions. I think there are better books out there.

  • Simple and informative!
    By A1CEZBQ5P21X4K on 2006-12-26
This is THE BEST breastfeeding book that I have read thus far. I initially purchased the American Academy of Pediatrics' "New Mother's Guide to Breastfeeding", which was an adequate book for those women who may be exploring their options in terms of breast vs. bottle, but as an RN, I learned absolutely nothing. I kept feeling like there was something missing, but being pregnant with my first child and having never breastfed before, I couldn't say exactly what. Then I bought this book on a whim and WOW! I LOVE IT!!! This book not only addresses the "how's" of breastfeeding with pictures and numerous detailed explanations, but it also explains the "why". I have so much more insight into how breatfeeding works and have a new appreciation for the team that my baby and I will become.

  • MUST Read for Breastfeeding Mom's!
    By A32W5JY028CB9E on 2007-02-03
I got off to a very rough start with breastfeeding my son. Fortunately, I had this book when we got home from the hospital. I referred to it MANY times in those first critical days home when I was second guessing myself and when I was ready to give up. It was so reassuring and gave me the information I needed to KEEP going. I'm happy to report that my baby is now a month old, gaining like a champ and so far is exclusively breast fed. Excellent resource! Does not have the preachy tone found in other breastfeeding books.

  • Wow! Who Knew?
    By A2LHC82IPYF9O8 on 2007-01-09
I am a first time expecting mom - & I will be the first to admit that I am 100% clueless! This book is amazing! It describes everything in such detail & explains everything to expect. I love it & would recommend it to anyone who will be attempting to breastfeed!

  • User Friendly
    By A24JLTDTZ4P9OM on 2007-10-05
I read The Nursing Mother's Companion before I had my baby and it was very good. Then after I had been nursing and working for awhile I still needed some reassurance about maintaining my supply. I found this book very informative and it doesn't have that scolding tone some of the other books have. I also enjoyed the details about the way other cultures deal with birth, motherhood and breastfeeding. I'm buying it for a pregnant friend of mine.

  • Best breastfeeding book
    By APUGDJ40HD0XB on 2007-05-11
I read this book while pregnant and then again when my baby arrived. This book addressed all my concerns. This book also agreed with what the lactation consultants I saw recommended and also on the same page as La Leche League. My baby is now 2 mos and breastfeeding has been successful so far. I firmly believe that if you are planning to breastfeed your child you must do your research because you will have many people... nurses, pediatricians, friends, family telling you all different things. Read this book. Don't assume that breastfeeding will come naturally.

  • I wish I'd had this BEFORE MY SON WAS BORN!
    By A268JL1U7G3V2Y on 2007-07-06
I thought I'd done everything I could to prepare for breastfeeding, but if a friend hadn't brought me this book at 3 weeks I really might have thrown in the towel. I was starting to think I'd never make it through the first month and wondering if I had milk supply problems. In five minutes of looking at this book I realized that:

    1. it would get SO much easier in a few weeks (if only someone had told me!);

    2. all my "worries" were actually normal behavior for a 3 week old baby. (If only someone had told me!)

    3. I too could feed lying down at night and actually get some sleep. (If only someone had told me!)

If you're about to have a child - or if you're exhausted after only a few weeks and wondering if you can make breastfeeding work - then do yourself a favor and READ this book before you decide to quit, supplement, introduce a bottle, or switch to formula.

  • Breastfeeding Made Simple is the most important and helpful book I read prior to my daughter's birth
    By A2BNQGY6ZYXFFQ on 2008-03-21
(Review by my wife): Despite taking a breastfeeding class, working with lactation consultants and doing quite a bit of reading on the subject, I never did get my son to latch on properly. As a result, he ended up being hospitalized for jaundice. Everything turned out fine, but the experience really scared me. I wasn't confident that I had the ability to nurture him on my own. Plus, with the exception of my husband, I had little encouragement from others to keep going. As a result, I gave up on breastfeeding the natural way. Instead, I pumped breast milk for him until he was twelve months old. I just felt like I had to see how much milk he was getting. Once I got pregnant with my daughter, I was determined to succeed the next time around. I believe that I am still exclusively breastfeeding her at six months because of Mohrbacher's and Kendall-Tackett's book. The Seven Laws gave me so much insight as to what went wrong with my son Not only did they educate me on how to fix problems that might come up, but more importantly how to prevent many of them. Everything is laid out so logically that you truly walk away with all you need to know about breastfeeding. And sadly, the reality is that you cannot assume that you're going to be taught how to breastfeed during your short postpartum hospital stay. So you really do have to educate yourself. Along with the invaluable hands-on help of lactation consultants, this book is the only one you'll need. In addition to its wisdom, the other great gift of this book is how it empowers you to try and stick with breastfeeding.

  • Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers
    By A31UG0BJMK9E0J on 2007-03-08
This is an EXCELLANT book! I recommend it highly. I have been teaching childbirth education for a long time, and even I learned a few new things in this book. Women should read this before having their baby, so they really get the concepts before problems occur, such as positioning, latching on, and what to look for as far as eliminations from babies, but is not limited to pregnancy. Definitely can read this after you have your baby as well. I was also privledged to meet the author of this book.

  • The only breastfeeding book you'll need....
    By A2ERHNJXQK469U on 2007-07-21
Okay, I have read them all. I LOVE this book. And don't skip the intro! It is great and she dispels all the myths out there.
Clear, concise, accurate and positive, this is the book for any type of Mom! From a professional point of view, this book as a resource is great.

  • ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!
    By AFXTWU15B7MPH on 2007-08-27
This is simply the BEST breastfeeding book ever! It answers all of your questions, even those you hadn't thought about. It explains EVERYTHING you need to know. This book saved my life; if it wasn't for it I would have probably given up. Thanks to it I successfully breastfed my baby until he was 8 months old. I highly, highly recommend it. I've already bought several copies to give to my pregnant friends. In fact, the single advice I give to any pregnant woman I meet is: if you're planning on breastfeeding READ THIS BOOK!

I've been an obstetrical RN for 12 years, and I wish this book was distributed to everyone at their prenatal visits. Very useful information that is concise and well-organized. I give it to all my new-parent friends and family, and they've all raved about it. A sincere THANK YOU to the authors for breaking it down to the basics!

  • Breastfeeding help is here.
    By A1JNSKJON8JAGJ on 2007-12-16
I wish I had this book before my baby arrived. My lactation consultant recommended it so I checked it out at the library. It was so useful that I purchased my own copy. It is a great guide to everything you wish you knew about breastfeeding. It even helped my talk with our pediatrician about the possibility of our son having colic due to acid reflux. This will help you with latching techniques, questions regarding cluster feeding, and so much more.

  • I love this book!!!
    By A30MY84JYCL383 on 2008-01-19
This book is so amazing! I'm in training to become a doula and this book was one of the books we were required to read, so I bought it not thinking twice about it. I have 4 children of my own and nursed all of them, so I didn't think this book was going to teach me much since I have a lot of experience with breastfeeding and overcoming problems, but boy was I wrong!!! This book has so much information that in hindsight would have saved me a lot of difficulties and would have made things very simple - the way it should be and can be! If you are pregnant or nursing get this book, don't think twice about it, you will not regret it. The pictures seems like from the 70's, but hey, I don't think nursing positions have changed much since man kind was created, so who cares if the hair styles and the wardrobes in the pictures are outdated. The nursing positions are the focus anyway, therefore the pictures are very helpful regardless of when they were taken.

  • A Must Have
    By A2HEM3RBRHGDYY on 2008-03-01
The lactation consultant at the hospital I was delivering suggested this book and i'm thankful. It's an excellent book and I believe this book attributed to my ease of breastfeeding. I got this book for 2 other new mothers hoping it would be as helpful to them.

  • Best breastfeeding book
    By A2OEA10GHDVAB5 on 2007-06-14

  • Read this book and breathe a sigh of relief!
    By AQJ0481R1GA0U on 2007-09-26
I am expecting twins in December. Looked at other books but this one really seemed to be my answer. It's an easy read. Keeps it simple. Provides a wealth of information to ease a first time mom's concerns and anxieties about the "fears" of breastfeeding. I now know this is the most natural experience and no need to be afraid. I'm excited to breastfeed my twins and know that this is going to work. Go into it believing! Don't go into thinking "IF it works..." It will. I will buy this for any woman who I know is expecting!

  • One of the best breastfeeding books out there!
    By A3KI329QOUJTCJ on 2008-01-14
This may be one of the best breastfeeding books on the market today. It's easy to read and understand and truly sets the record straight. If you're looking for a book to either inform yourself about how to breastfeed or need help with a breastfeeding problem, this is the book for you. Buy it for yourself, give it to friends, pass it on!

  • ok, but read w/ caution
    By A3HJXZ11XTFB0E on 2008-03-28
It is a good recourse to have, but don't use it as a "nursing bible" or you will think you are doing EVERYTHING wrong.

I found "What to Expect the 1st Year" had a MUCH better section on breastfeeding that was user friendly and not mean to those that struggle.

  • The best book ever!!
    By ABSYU3EPHUAU6 on 2008-04-20
This is by far the best breastfeeding book I've ever read. Very clear and simple, I would buy it for every expecting mom I know!

  • Easy read, good stats
