A Modern Classic By AEYEAH3C78BBZ on 2006-02-08
It took me twenty five years to read Jerry Bridge's book The Pursuit of Holiness. A short while ago I received the "25th Anniversary Edition" and devoted much of this weekend to reading and absorbing the book. This book has become something of a modern day classic. Having read it, I know why! It is a deeply challenging book and one I'm sure I will read again before another twenty five years have elapsed.
The premise of Bridge's book is that holiness, like almost everything else in life, is something that we must strive for. Holiness is a gift of God and is something that can never be accomplished apart from the work of the Spirit. Yet it is our responsibility to strive for it and to work towards this goal. Bridges illustrates this by writing of a farmer.
A farmer plows his field, sows the seed, and fertilizes and cultivates - all the while knowing that in the final analysis he is utterly dependent on forces outside himself. He knows he cannot cause the seed to germinate, nor can he produce the rain and sunshine for growing and harvesting the crop. For a successful harvest, he is dependent on these things from God.
Yet the farmer knows that unless he diligently pursues his responsibilities to plow, plant, fertilize, and cultivate, he cannot expect a harvest at the end of the season. In a sense he is in a partnership with God, and he will reap its benefits only when he has fulfilled his responsibilities.
Just as farming is a joint venture between man and God, in which man cannot do what God must do and God will not do what the farmer should do, so too is the pursuit of holiness. God will not bestow a life of holiness upon us the day we are saved. He requires that we pursue holiness with the confidence that He will work with us and empower us to achieve the desire of our hearts. He gives us the power to do what he requires and expects of us.
The rest of the book is, then, an exhortation to holiness and practical advice on how to attain the holiness God requires of us. On one hand we face an impossible task, for we shall never be perfectly holy in his life. Yet on the other hand we face a task that brings great benefit, for God rewards those who diligently seek after Him. Holiness brings great joy.
There were a couple of areas in which this book challenged me in a way that was unexpected. First, I came to see that much of my pursuit of holiness has been on a macro level. I have looked at my life and seen progress on a grand scale. I have seen areas where I have made much progress and have seen certain sinful habits and desires fall away. For this I am very thankful and acknowledge the Spirit's work. But the book helped me understand the importance of examining my life on the micro level. While I have certainly made great strides in some big areas, I continue to be amazed at my propensity for sin in small areas. There were several times that I was led to stare my sin directly in the face and react with amazement at just how polluted my heart has become. Perhaps one of my greatest sins, and the greatest sins of all humans, is to trivialize sin. But, and this has been on my heart many times in the past months, I have come to see that to trivialize sin is to trivialize the love of God. For several months I have had a slip of paper on my desk on which I wrote, "When we make light of sin, we make light of the love that saved us. The greater our appreciation of our sin, the greater our appreciation of God's love." The Pursuit of Holiness helped me understand just how true this is. When I examine the Scripture and understand what God demands of me, I also understand how far I fall short and how great a Savior was required to save a sinner like me.
The second area this book challenged me was in understanding the relationship of desire and reason. I know from my experience in life that, while God works primarily through reason, Satan focuses his attacks primarily through my desires. I can think of hundreds of times where my desires have been opposed to what I knew was right. There have been countless times when I have fallen into sin because I allowed my desires to have their way over reason. Truly Satan has a powerful weapon at his disposal! Yet how often has my reason had to overcome my desires? How often do I have to interrupt a truly sweet time of fellowship with the Lord because I know I have work that must be done. Certainly not nearly as often as the times I have decided to forsake my time with the Lord because I have desired to do something (anything!) else. While I have always known this to be true, this book has helped me understand the necessity of realigning and training my desires so that I desire what is good. When my heart truly desires obedience I will remove a sword from Satan's hand.
And so I commend this book to you. You will not have to look far to find testimonies of the power of The Pursuit of Holiness. It has endorsed by, among others, John MacArthur, John Piper, J.I. Packer and R.C. Sproul. And perhaps more importantly, it has been endorsed by hundreds of thousands of brothers and sisters in Christ who have been challenged by it to live lives of holiness. This book is a classic and, to echo John MacArthur, is well deserving of the honor.
What Are God's Role & Our Role in Our Pursuit of Holiness? By A1YS1FYWQAD1MT on 2002-11-20
Someone has well said that nature forms us, sin deforms us, penitentiary reforms us, education informs us, the world conforms us, but only Jesus transforms us.
But how does Jesus transform us to be holy and more like Him? Do we simply "let go and let God"? What should we rely on God to do? And what are our responsibilities in this pursuit of holiness? The book addresses those questions.
This book is helpful for every Christian. It's true that we are saved not by what we do but by the perfect righteousness of Christ imputed to us by faith. But pursuit of holiness is not an option for Christians because saving faith creates within us the desire to be Christ-like.
Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32) By knowing the truth of who we are in Christ and the victory that Christ has overcome for us over sin, we can then claim this truth and be free--no longer slaves to sin (Rom. 6:17-18). This book reminds me again of this truth (who we are in Christ), what we should rely upon God to do, and what we should accept as our responsibilities in our pursuit of holiness. It discusses also the nature and tactics of satan's temptations, how to express our dependence on the Holy Spirit, principles for personal disciplines, how to put sin to death, etc. (There's also a sequel to this book titled The Practice of Godliness).
Uninspiring By A1JIPFV4OL520T on 2003-09-10
In this brief book Jerry Bridges urges Christian to purse holy lives. He laments that for many evangelicals personal holiness is seen as an impossible achievement. Bridges tries to walk the line between obedience to God on one hand, and legalism on the other. He does this by distinguishing between his private struggles with sin (lust, ice cream, television, etc.) and the absolutes dictated by Scripture.Unfortunately, this book is like almost every Navigator book I have read. It is written for a Sunday School audience and often sounds like a commercial for other Navigator material I read this book just after finishing Richard Fosters Celebration of Discipline and I could not help but compare the two books. Foster was a breath of fresh air, inspiring me to purse the Godly life; whereas Bridges proved to be uninspiring. What is lacking is the joy of the Christian life. It is not until the last chapter that the author develops the concept of Christian joy, even then, it sounds as if the only joy we are going to find the joy in the midst of suffering. Foster, on the other hand sees the joy of the Christian life at every turn. Bridges has an inadequate view of the Holy Spirit, almost equating the leading of the Holy Spirit with Bible study. True, the Word is the sword of the Spirit, but I enjoyed Fosters charismatic emphasis on the heading of the Holy Spirit. Does Bridges have any fun in his life? Would he listen to Rock n Roll music? Reading his book reminded me of Christians weddings- Boring! Boring! Boring! Everyone is afraid to have a good time lest someone be offended. I did not like this book. Other than the fact there are some good sermons in this book it did not provide any real insight that helped by ministry.
This is a great one... By A3SHA4Y9DHEK39 on 2006-01-18
We live in a church culture where holiness is rarely mentioned. When holiness is mentioned, it is often very generic or totally legalistic. Jerry Bridges does an outstanding job of walking a fine line. He is very specific in presenting the biblical basis for our obligation to pursue holiness if we call ourselves followers of Christ. Nonetheless, he presents the case in such a way that does not lead toward a legalistic mindset.
One of my greatest complaints about the church (myself included) is that we all too often look exactly like the world which does not know Christ. Our behaviors, our attitudes, and our choices reflect our culture, not the one who wants to cultivate us as His disciples. Anyone who feels the slightest disconnect from where you are and where you think God wants you to be ought to give this book a try. I would suggest that pursuing holiness will undoubtedly have a significant positive impact on your life. It has on mine, and I look forward to rereading this modern classic!!
Pursuing what Christians have nearly forgotten By A27R9JQ4KDZEH8 on 2006-03-26
Holiness: The nearly forgotten word of Christianity. If it was happiness, joy, love, grace, or mercy the modern church would be very familiar with it, but holiness is a word foreign to many professing Christians. Jerry Bridges has done an outstanding job in awakening Christians to the fact that God has a responsiblity in sanctifying us, and we as the children of God have a major role in our own pursuit of holiness. Jerry Bridges shows you as plain as day from the Word of God that Christ saves people from not only the penalty of sin (hell) but also from the power of sin. So many Christians sit in the church pew thinking how wonderful it will be to go to Heaven, yet their daily life is full of bondage to things that Christ has given them the power to overcome. The Christian life is not just victory over hell through Christ, but also over the sinful habits, addictions, and attitudes that we were enslaved to us sinners. Let Jerry Bridges turn your attention to what God's Word already states plainly. We have God's mercy to forgive us of sin, but we also have God's grace to empower us to live like Jesus did.
- Insightful, practical, scriptural, and vital.
     By A1WTCSBFHDKJMS on 2007-03-04
The Word of G-d plainly teaches us, in verse and example, that "without holiness, no man shall see G-d."
Jerry Bridges' examination of this foundational doctrine is both cogent and compelling. He has drawn extensively upon some of the finest writings on the subject; e.g. D.Martyn-Lloyd Jones, and Bishop JC Ryle, among others. We are given a practical and edifying guide to empower, encourage, and exhort us to pursue holiness, for holiness is the very essence of who G-d in Christ is.
This book is not an easy, quick read despite the fact that it is under 200 pages. There is much to pray about, to meditate on, and to consider if holiness is to be the characterization of our lives, and not merely head-knowledge. This book's strong point is that the author uses so much scripture to buttress his central thesis that one does not first have to get holy in order to be saved, but that holiness is a part of salvation and we are to expect the fruits of this in our lives.
Read and weep tears of repentance. One of the mnost important, yet underrated books of our time.
- Excellent Title on Personal Holiness
     By A4QC76NMWE5OC on 2005-12-28
Bridges has written a gem of a book that every Christian can benefit from, whether young or old, mature or young in the faith. The book purpose is to challenge the reader to become more like Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit combined with human effort.
Among the important points covered include:
1. God calls us to be like Him and not like others.
2. Holiness is necessary for effective service.
3. 3 aspects of sin's nature and tactics.
4. We must discipline our bodies and treat them as temples of God.
5. 3 principles to practice to train ourselves in godliness.
6. Faith is necessary to living a life pleasing to God.
7. Instead of withdrawing from the world, we must resist its influence. Our holiness will be a strong living rebuke to others.
8. We must be concerned with not only our own personal holiness, but also the eternal destiny of others.
9. 2 ways to express dependence on the Holy Spirit for living a holy life.
10. While God provides the opportunity to be released from sin's bondage, we have the responsibility to act.
In summary, this is a small but powerful book to inspire the reader to allow God, through His Holy Spirit, to live His holiness through us.
Read and enjoy, highly recommended!
- Excellent training for any Christian
     By A27KBNB1CRRVGZ on 1998-03-17
This biblically founded book is one of the greatest motivating books I have ever read. Jerry Bridges, through illumination from God, reveals what holiness is... and what that means to a Christian life. The book opposes legalism, and simply guides the reader on how to pursue God's Will in their lives. The book has helped me become more fearful, and yet, thankful towards God, but most of all loving Him for saving us and giving us the stregth and desire to please Him by leading a holy life. I plan on buying another book by Jerry Bridges entitled the Practice of Godliness. I have heard it is as motivating, life -affirming, and Sprirt-driven as this one.
- Practical Advice
     By A2K0YWSZGPZT54 on 2001-02-27
I am only half-way through this book, but I am already very impressed with it. Jerry Bridges uses lots of Scripture (and the study guide offers even more references to look up) to show us why we must live holy lives, what it means to live holy lives, and how to actually do it and succeed at it.The book offers practical advice for defending ourselves against temptation and Satan's attacks on our minds and our wills. This book isn't written only for Christians who struggle with "big" sins. It also addresses the "little" sins we all struggle with: prideful spirits, judgmental attitudes, little half-truths. I will definitely be encouraging others to read this book.
- A thoughtful delineation of Biblical Holiness
     By A1OVCN7EG720FX on 2002-05-22
This book is dynamite and I heartily recommend it for all Christians serious about holiness. Basically, it's an abridgement of JC Ryle's "Holiness," which is also an excellent text. What makes this book so appealing is that it does not merely wax poetical about the virtues of holiness, but outlines the Biblical understanding of it, including debunking aberrant doctrines like "higher life theology." Anyone who is persuaded by the Charismatic/Pentacostal or Holiness movements should give this book an honest read. To the book's credit, it is full of practical advice and very accessible to the average Christian.
- Great for a Bible Study group....
     By A2KT80828WJGMU on 2004-10-13
I have taught through this book twice in the past five years. Each time I have been challenged in my Christian walk. The accompanying study guide with scriptural references and thought-provoking study questions make this relevant for both new and mature believers. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
As Christians, we serve a holy God and are called to live holy lives. This book beautifully encourages believers to focus on God's holiness as we renew our minds and lives in holiness.
- The purpose of holiness.
     By A281P8VOXZCW8T on 2005-12-07
"without holiness no one will see the Lord." Hebrews 12:14
My only complaint about this book is that the author did not adequately explain the context of this verse. The born again Christian is already made holy through Christ. It is our responsibility to partake in this holiness, but once we have been saved by grace through faith, we will never lose this holiness. We just might fail to make full use of the abundant grace that God has given us. It is those who are not born again who will not see the Lord due to their lack of Christ's holiness.
Too many Christians today do not realize what we have been given access to through Christ. It is like becoming a multi-billionaire and continuing to live as if in poverty. Ephesians 1:3 says "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,". We have been given EVERY spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in Christ! Yet, so many of us are still searching, reading all those "name it and claim it" books, or frustrating God's grace with legalism.
The purpose for our pursuit of the holiness is to give glory to God. It is to be salt and light to this dying world through the outworking of Christ's Spirit in us. It is not so that we can earn God's favor. Christ has already done this for us, and there is nothing that we can add to Christ's perfect sacrifice. We come empty handed to the cross, and Christ fills us with new life. We are now simply called to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth, and to spread His Gospel to the world. The Spirit in which we are to worship is the same Spirit (the Holy Spirit) we are given upon our profession of faith, and is the only Spirit which pleases God. And through this Spirit we can find the Truth in God's Word. We must worship BOTH in Spirit and in Truth. If we come to God's Word without the Spirit of Truth, we are libel to make it say something it doesn't. If we worship in Spirit, with out being grounded in the Truth of God's Word, we open ourselves up to being decieved by the lying spirits of this world.
The Holy Spirit, and God's living Word are the only two things that set Christians apart from the rest of the world. It isn't our morality, or our religion. It is Christ who lives in us, and leads us into all truth. Regarding God's truths, 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 says "For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he wil instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ."
One thing that Mr. Bridges said in this book is something to the effect of "The victorious Christian is more aptly labled the OBEDIENT Christian.". We have victory in Jesus who was obedient to God's will unto death, even death on the cross. If we would only strive to put off our old natures, and submit ourselves to the new creation that we are in Christ, our joy would truly be complete, and the world would be able to see Christ's love through our lives.

- Walking Out Our Impute Righteousness In the Natural
     By A19AUDZBSX8KYK on 2007-01-31
This was a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. I have, in my life, struggled with some very serious besetting sins and this book is right on point for anyone in the same boat. It talks about the righteosness which is already ours from Christ, but focuses very heavily on the part that we have to do - the choices we must make that God won't make for us to walk in obedience. More than anything, I think this book helped me to realize that I am delivered from the kingdom of darkness and I do have a choice not to sin. Many Christians are free, but still have a slave mentality. Wonderful book. I highly recomend it.
- Great Book

This book really helped me to realize my own struggles with sin and how to overcome them. I really enjoyed knowing that the Holy Spirit is here to help because it has the arsenal of the Scriptures to back it up. Anyone can overcome any sin if they want to.
- A Great Read To Help Run The Race
     By on 1999-11-11
Jerry Bridges has done a fantastic job showing the reader that Holiness is something that we cannot obtain, but still strive for everyday of our life. God commands us to, "Be Holy as I am Holy." Acknowledgeing our sins and putting off our old self (denying ourself) must be done so that we will be completly obedient to His work within us. Jerry Bridges helps the reader do just that and shows how one must put on the new self in The Practice of Godliness. Both worked together and are great for the maturing Christian.
- The most helpful and practical book to date on the subject!

This book was loaned to me and as soon as I opened it, my eyes were glued!! Jerry Bridges, a well respected author and teacher does a superb job presenting the teachings of scripture on this subject. Lots of verses presented in this book--it's loaded! I also recommended this book to a bible study group I'm apart of--tremendous praise from the participants. This is a must read for any Christian who wants a comphrehensive reference and study on the subject of growing in holiness.
- One of the best Christian books on holiness I've read.
     By AIXEYVWS86TV on 2002-10-17
Jerry Bridges shows us in this great book how Christians must depend on God's grace at all times and yet also striving with perseverance to pursuit holiness. We will never be perfectly holy in our present life, nevertheless it is God's will that we must always pursue such holiness so that we may be increasingly changed into His Son's image more and more everyday. This book will greatly humble and challenge every Christian to stop flirting with sin (however small it may be), and to start living a life that is pleasing to the holy God whom we worship and adore.

- Holiness simply explained
     By AJ70ER5V4Y68P on 2007-02-23
I would highly recommend people to read this book. Especially in today's fast paced world, where sin practically comes to our doorsteps on a daily basis, we all need to learn how to best combat our deformed nature. The most beneficial section of The Pursuit of Holiness is by far chapters 5 - 7; in fact these chapters are an excellent companion to Romans 6 - 8.
In chapter five, Bridges rightly comments: "In a similar manner, Christians tend to sin out of habit. It is our habit to look for ourselves instead of others, to retaliate when injured in some way, and to indulge the appetites of our bodies. It is our habit to live for ourselves and not for God. When we become Christians, we do not drop all of this overnight. In fact, we will spend the rest of our lives putting off these habits and putting on habits of holiness" (p 51). In this chapter he really focuses in on the fact that as Christians when we sin it is because we choose to.
Chapter six I must state is the best chapter out of the entire book; the chapter centers on Romans 7:21, "I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good." Three fantastic points are brought out:
1. The seat of indwelling sin is the heart (pp 54-56).
2. Indwelling sin works largely through our desires (pp 56-57).
3. It tends to deceive our understanding or reasoning (pp 57-58).
Bridges explains that our evil desires are always looking to satisfy our lusts, which when engaged in a battle against sin our evil desires lead us to amuse ourselves with said sin. Our deformed nature tends to lead us into a misplaced confidence in our own will (i.e. pride). Therefore our desires must continuously be directed toward God. Last, he correctly warns "We abuse grace when, after sinning, we dwell on the compassion and mercy of God to the exclusion of His holiness and hatred of sin" (p 58).
Then in chapter seven, the consistent intake of scripture with the refocused fact that we are filled with the Holy Spirit and therefore dead to sin closes off a true gem of a study.
The remainder of the book focuses on solidifying holiness in our lives and the responsibility a Christian has to live a proper life of holiness. In closing, I once again recommend reading The Pursuit of Holiness; for Jerry Bridges covers this wonderful aspect of God in a way that is accessible to all Christians at all stages of growth.

This book has had such an impact on my life I could not put it down. It made so much sense. Everything is Biblical and related to scriptures. Has had a profound impact on me. I realized I need to read it again to grasp the truth of God's Word that author talks about. Really opened my eyes to what the Word of God is talking about in regards to pursuing a Holy life. Very easy to read. I have ordered the "study guide" and will read the book again very soon.
- A Must Have Book For Every Sincere Christian
     By A1UJ5BKRF1B3NX on 2001-11-05
Jerry Bridges deals with the subject of personal holiness also called sanctification, and how it is not passive but rather pro-active in the believer. Bridges talks about our responsibility to pursue personal and corperate holiness. Bridges talks about how God operates in us, as we co-operate, or surrender ourselves to His molding influences. God has given us the responsibility for doing the walking. This topic of holiness, is one much over-looked in most evangelial circles in these days of a watered down and sugary gospel that is currently being proclamated. This book will change your life, and your relationship with Christ, Jesus. Not a book for the "stop trying and start trusting" mentality that is prevailant today. Jerry Bridges is at his best in this work.
- The Best

- Walking in Holiness
     By A327BWDKAU99MM on 2008-04-22
Should we "let go and let God", trusting Him to bring us victory in the battle for holiness? Jerry Bridges would answer this question with a firm "no." Instead, he would lead us to "grab hold and let God." In other words, Bridges charges us to take hold of the resources Christ offers us to kill sin's power and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit. In Bridges' view, holiness is not a matter of victory or defeat, but of obedience or disobedience. He teaches that victory is the byproduct of obedience, not the aim of the pursuit of holiness. Holiness is still the work of God, but we must actively lay hold of the work of God in our lives to see the fullest possible work of the Holy Spirit in us. As I consider all of the personal commands to action in the Bible regarding holiness, I am convinced that Bridges is right. Commands like, "put off your old self, mortify the deeds of the flesh, put on the new self, pursue righteousness, think about whatever is good and pure, walk in the Spirit" and many more show me that my part in holiness is to throw off everything that hinders and fix my eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith. This excellent book is best in its final half, as Bridges deals with some of the details of this walk of faith and the specifics of how to fight sin and cultivate good in your life. Highly recommended.
