Eckhart Tolle is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s most inspiring spiritual teachers, sharing the enlightenment he himself experienced after a startling personal transformation. His views go beyond any particular religion, doctrine, or guru. This book extracts the essence from his teachings in The Power of Now, showing us how to free ourselves from “enslavement to the mind.” The aim is to be able to enter into and sustain an awakened state of consciousness throughout everyday life. Through meditations and simple techniques, Eckhart shows us how to quiet our thoughts, see the world in the present moment, and find a path to “a life of grace, ease, and lightness.”

This manual-style book instantly dives into Eckhart Tolle's principles of "living in the moment," which could be a jarring experience for readers who haven't read his preceding book, The Power of Now. For the initiated, though, this makes an excellent companion guide--rich in exercises and meditations to help readers get out of their minds so they can live more peacefully in their bodies. Sometimes it's hard to fathom what on earth Tolle is talking about: "To regain awareness of Being and to abide in that state of 'feeling-realization' is enlightenment." Be patient. All concepts will be revealed (or at least more carefully explained). Ultimately, Tolle leads readers into a new form of thinking (or actually not thinking) that erases the consuming habits of waiting, worrying, and being in fear. The first step is ending the "delusion of time." He asks, "Are you always trying to get somewhere other than where you are? ... Is most of your doing just a means to an end?" If so, Tolle has a book full of advice for you. As simplistic as this may sound, Tolle's work has spiritual merit and depth, especially for frantic Westerners who find their lives diminished by packed schedules and busy-ness. --Gail Hudson

  • Better named: Randomly Abridged Power of Now

    By A39ANG35O4T3F3 on 2001-10-22
This book is about packaging a poorly abridged version of a truly great spiritual guide. I am not a reader of "spiritual" guides but found the original "Power of Now" to be a deep, rich, and incredibly clear book of a Truth about life that nothing in me can refute. It has become a truly important experience for me - life changing. I have purchased many copies for friends and they in turn have done the same.

This book "Practicing the Power of Now" is a watered down version of the original and in my reading of it, much less powerful. I have read the original twice and it remains strong for me, but this book is very, very abridged, strangely formatted, and does not feel to contain the essence of the original. The words that are in it are EXACTLY the same as those in the original and although I am sure there are exceptions, I confirmed this by choosing four pages at random and then found the text in the original. Much is left out and the formatting is distracting.

Tolle and the publishers can be very, very proud of the original, but frankly, they should be deeply ashamed of this book. Although there is a need for a book that is to be used as a tool for practice by readers of the first, this book is most certainly not it.

I will be seeking a refund and I hope that others do as well.

  • Outstanding Wisdom for Enlightened Relationships

    By A3DHHQ2NGXOUAH on 2004-04-20
There is so much breathtaking wisdom in this book. I wanted to give you a sample of Eckhart Tolle's profound guidance concerning relationships, as this area continues to plague men and women.

" Never before have relationships been as problematic and conflict ridden as they are now. As you may have noticed, they are not here to make you happy or fulfilled. If you continue to pursue the goal of salvation through a relationship, you will be disillusioned again and again. But if you accept that the relationship is here to make you conscious instead of happy, then the relationship will offer you salvation, and you will be aligning yourself with the higher consciousness that wants to be born into this world."

"Do not accuse each other of being unconscious. The moment you start to argue, you have identified with a mental position & are now defending not only that position but also your sense of self. The ego is in charge. You have become unconscious. At times, it may be appropriate to point out certain aspects of your partner's behavior. If you are very alert, very present, you can do so without ego involvement - without blaming, accusing, or making the other wrong."

"LEARN TO GIVE EXPRESSION to what you feel without blaming. Learn to listen to your partner in an open, nondefensive way.
Give your partner space for expressing himself or herself. Be present. Accusing, defending, attacking - all those patterns that are designed to strengthen or protect the ego or to get its needs met will then become redundant. Giving space to others - and to yourself - is vital.
    Love cannot flourish without it."

This book brings you profound wisdom to free you from pain in all areas of your life, and bring you fully into the present to illuminate your true self. It is one to re-read many times, as well as to share with others.

  • LIVING IN THE MOMENT!

    By A3SN9EF7GTNEU2 on 2001-10-05
This book makes an excellent companion to "The Power of Now." The exercises found among these pages causes one to do some deep soul searching to determine what is important in life and what is truly insignificant. Even if you have not read Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now", which I strongly recommend readers do, this thought-provoking workbook can be used as a stand-alone book.

Tolle has a way of giving meaning to life by using exercises, meditations and essential teachings (many based on Buddhist philosophies) to bring peace, balance and harmony into our lives. The goal is to be able to bring about and sustain an enlightened state of consciousness in our daily lives. Tolle has a way of making the reader do some deep soul searching and reveal many truths about themselves that they might not otherwise do. In essence, the book causes one to "lighten the load" and follow a path of peace and harmony. This is truly a spiritual journey to a more enriched and meaningful life. The book is highly recommended and highly deserving of a five-star plus rating.

  • The Power of Now Squared

    By A1B1BC3JL0VJV9 on 2002-09-28
After reading Eckhart Tolle's first book: "The Power of Now" I, too, wanted to be able to live in the present as he suggests. But, how does one do this? What is the recipé? His new book: "Practicing The Power of Now" gives a prescription for those seeking to put his teachings into practice. Though his idea of living in the now is found in the New Testament: ". . .take no thought for tomorrow. . ." and in other religious traditions, what Tolle has written in the first book is an engaging story of how he lived through a personal crisis and discovered the principle of living in the "NOW". Practicing The Power of Now takes the reader one step further, showing how an individual can live in the now with simple exercises, teachings, meditations and practices. There is nothing new in this book that wasn't in the original; just a more logical framework and a step-by-step approach. Like many recent best-sellers (see "Chicken Soup For the Soul"), Tolle's NOW books seem like they're headed for the production of many, similar titles. I'm looking for "Teenagers Living In The Now" book soon, as well as "Grampa and Grandma Living In The Now"and the baby book, "Baby's Now Book." Read the first book and pass on the sequels. They're the publisher's idea to increase profits. Five stars for the original. Two for the new one.

  • Which one to buy?

    By A1O9BT8V9SQL3V on 2004-04-14
Since the content of Tolle's books has been covered well elsewhere, I'd like to address the person new to Tolle and wondering where to begin.

In my personal experience, if I could only afford to purchase one book, I'd start with PRACTICING THE POWER OF NOW. I feel that it essentially restates the material found in the original POWER OF NOW but in a format I found easier to digest. I don't see much point in owning both books (which I currently do.)

If you connect with PRACTICING and want more, then I'd recommend the audio book/retreat Realizing the Power of Now: An In-Depth Retreat With Eckhart Tolle. (It's less than $10 if you purchase the audio file from Audible.) I'm only half way through listening yet I constantly find myself thinking "Ah...now I understand what he meant." It truly is an excellent supplement.

There is one more Tolle book here, STILLNESS SPEAKS. I borrowed this from the library. It's basically just out-takes from the other books, sort of a quotable quotes book that restates things in a nutshell. It would make a nice gift to a Tolle fan, but again, doesn't offer anything more than the other books. I suppose my message is: everything you need to know is in the original POWER OF NOW, stated perhaps more clearly in PRACTICING and excerpted in STILLNESS but supported well in audio format by the retreat CD.

I find Tolle's basic message very powerful, enlightening and simple. As he himself constantly repeats, he's not saying anything new...be here now. But he explains it in a way which finally connects the dots for me. Unfortunately, this simple message seems to be getting constantly repackaged and I hope it doesn't turn into a "Chicken Soup for the Enlightened Soul" series. (I should probably go make sure that's not the title of an actual book! )

  • The detractors didn't read the book title
    By A3B20R4ZAH0Y2Y on 2005-08-06
Please read the title of this book before buying this book. The title is, "Practicing the Power of Now: Essential Teachings, Meditations, and Exercises from The Power of Now"

What you should take away from this title, and what the detractors missed, is those last five words, "from The Power of Now".

What this means is, this book is a condensed extract from the original masterwork. It's also quite well done. There are some original exercises, which cut straight to the key point, which is how to achieve "presence."

Although I own the original masterwork, I refer to this book more often. It's a great workbook, lunch reader, and meditation guide.

Go ahead, read part of the book to see it's power for yourself. Search for the word "myriad", which appears on the first page of the first chapter, and read a few pages. If you like what you read, make your own decision.

P.S. Another way to appreciate the Power of Now is to listen to the audio CD or the download version from Audible.com. Well worth every penny. And don't worry-you are not about to be sucked into an expensive series of seminars or anything else-Ekhart Tolle's only products are a few books. I recommend you listen to the audio version, because as others have said, there's a very spiritual aspect to Eckhart's voice, but all you really need is the original "The Power of Now" or this book, "Practicing the Power of Now."

  • Another way to think about repetition...
    By on 2004-06-25
I see that some readers are concerned about repetition in the various publications and question whether economic motives are the driving force. I do not know Mr. Tolle and withhold judgment. However, through many years of experiential reading I recognize when books consist of far more than words. The wisdom of the author's higher consciousness is being directed through the printed media. It's there for the taking by all who will slow down and allow it in. Many will recognize that following an evolving workshop teacher over time allows the student to partake of the increasing wisdom carried and shared by the teacher. Although the logical premise in a series of writings may remain the same, later compositions might convey increasingly higher "energy hits". Looking at the "value added" component might be a consideration when deciding what to purchase. As with everything else, individuals should use their own discretion to get a feeling sense of what might be good for them. The rich energy behind the words in this volume sent me to deep places within myself. I suggest being fully present with each sentence, one at a time, in order to get the most out of the reading experience.

  • Of Very Limited Usefulness...
    By A14099Z309QNOD on 2001-10-15
Let me start off by saying that the original Power of Now is the most important spiritual book I have read, (and I have read quite a few)... I am now reading it for the fifth time, annotating and underlining passages in pencil. I also often listen to the audio version of the book, which, being read by Eckhart, contains the Presence he speaks so eloquently of.

As for this book, I find it to be an overly edited, choppy version of the Power of Now, with little or no new material. Despite trying very hard to get into it, it just does not flow for me. All the power of the original book seems lost, and I find it very hard to read. Too many powerful ideas and words all crowded together, with none of the easy flow of the original. Eckhart, writing in the introduction, suggests that this book may be easier for some new readers to follow, but I disagree. The book starts abruptly, seemingly in the middle of a discussion on Being, and it is very hard to follow after that. Each chapter seems to start in the middle of an idea. When I pick up the original it is a pleasure to read almost anywhere, when I pick up this book, I feel a tension in myself as read it. I feel it's almost a disservice to the teachings of Eckhart Tolle. Someone unfamiliar with Eckharts teaching I think would not get it. This book fails in its attempt to present Eckhart's ideas in a more usable format.

That being said, it's possible that some people might like it, if they are just looking for an outline form of the material, (without eckhart's flow, clarity, warmth and humor). As for me, I'm going to stick with re-reading and annotating the original, which seems to bring even more energy into my copy of that incredible book.

  • You mean I dont have to fix myself?
    By on 2002-05-13
What a pleasure to read a book that encourages me to just continue being me, with one key suggestion: that I observe myself without judgment. Tolle presents this book as a simplified and condensed version of THE POWER OF NOW, his original bestseller. The tone is simple, gentle, and powerful. It's all about getting into the moment, where the magic and joy of life reside. I was very intrigued by Tolle's description of time as something that only exists in the mind, in the past or future. There is no time in the present, he points out, and by leaving the moment, we create more psychological time. I had never looked at this way. I also liked his emphasis on reconnecting with oneself by observing the sensations in one's body - this struck a chord with me. In a world awash with tips on how to get better, it's an immense relief to read something that opens your eyes to how perfect you already are. I strongly suggest complementing this book with WORKING ON YOURSELF DOESN'T WORK by Ariel and Shya Kane, another excellent publication that actually facilitates you in the day-to-day practice of living in the moment, where passion, satisfaction, and love are unlimited.

  • High Expectations
    By on 2001-10-15
When I learned that Eckhart Tolle had a new book out, I ordered it instantly and was counting the days until it arrived: I had found his POWER OF NOW to be so affecting and right and altogether helpful that I looked forward avidly to its follow-up. But to me PRACTICING THE POWER OF NOW is a sorry disappointment. It purports to be "essential teachings, meditations, and exercises" excerpted from the original book -- a reasonable, if slim, premise for a separate volume of the same material-- but in fact it has been put together in such a way that it's muddled and even without the "presence" that contributes to the power of the first book. Perhaps if Eckhart had produced even a little new material specifically for its new format, it could have worked as a conciser version. As it is, to a reader of the first book, it's confounding, and to a new reader, I imagine it would be incomprehensible. Eckhart's teachings are certainly 5 star, this book a discouraging 1 star.
For a profoundly moving experience, instead read the superlative, exceptionally important POWER OF NOW.

  • Not the oak tree, but the acorn, the essential essence.
    By A11Q4DC4YPPZGF on 2001-11-19
This is a deeply wonderful book. It is not what I (or apparently other readers) thought, but so what! Most things aren't what I think they are. If you were nourished by Eckhart's THE POWER OF NOW, then this is the essence and core of that book, without the questions that are in the previous book. Somehow it speaks to me even more strongly and more deeply now, after having read The Power of Now 2-3 times. I was ready for a more concentrated version of these teachings - and here they are, in a compact book. I live in New England, so its like taking a gallon of maple sap and simmering it down until you have a couple of ounces of maple syrup. Don't miss it. (...)

  • A fantastic contribution to humanity
    By A2KILKVAX5IF7H on 2004-07-04
I have studied many spiritual paths for over 30 years, and the wisdom Eckhart Tolle provides in Practicing the Power of Now is truly enlightening. I learned much from this book, and it is one of the few that I highly recommend. I learned much from the wisdom provided, and once applied, I felt a genuine release of the negativity that I used to feel. This is another rare contribution that I HIGHLY recommend, which is why I give it the five stars it deserves.

  • Today's version of Alan Watts--6 stars!!
    By on 2002-06-28
I have read countless books that cover the same ideas as this one, but for some reason this book had the greatest impact on me-and at a point when I thought reading books like this could never have such an impact on me anymore. Not only are his ideas explained clearly and simply, but he does not make you feel like you have to do certain mediations or exercises to experience what he is talking about, as so many of these other books (probably unintentionally) do. Also, I love that he addresses the word God and all that it can mean, and urges you to not be turned off by the mention of it and why. He also never attaches himself to any religion, which really hits home with me. In fact, I don't think he even uses the word "spirituality." He just explains things in a way that opens your perception of the way you view the world, and most importantly, he provides you with a variety of concrete tools to use in each moment--any time, anywhere, not just on your meditation stool--to help you experience what he is explaining. Many of these other books explain, but tell you that you have to meditiate to "get it," which always made me feel like meditation was something I had to "do" or "attain," which, of course, is beside the point. Rather in this book he points out that it is all a matter of focus and what you chose to focus on, in every minute, and that every minute is only ever now, no matter what you are doing. Perhaps it is just the timing of my reading this book that created such an impact on me, but I truly think it is largely because of the simplistic, clear way he writes about these "foreign" subjects that makes it so accessible and powerful. He also has wonderful analogies that at times make all the difference.

  • NOW is WOW!
    By A1LC3SAYESJH2S on 2003-01-12
Such a simple message, yet so profound and full of wisdom! I did not read Eckhart Tolle's first book on this subject because at the time of purchase, I preferred the Reader's Digest version of his message. I got it! It's written in a way that makes sense and is very satisfying.

This is what I learned: When faced with the illusion of a problem, you have the ability to chase that problem away by living in the Now. In other words, if you mentally take an issue out of the "problem" category, you will in essence take the problem's power away -- it is no longer a problem. This way of thinking, thinking in the NOW, has eleviated stress in my life. I can now look at my life with appreciation, moment by moment. It takes practice. When you do this, you are making a choice to seek positive solutions rather than hone in on that which is negative or out of your control.

In reading this little book of wisdom, I've found that the secret of life is your perception. Living in the Now, truly living in the now, is uplifting, satisfying, and the most powerful place to be.

  • Excellent for Quick Reference
    By ACAXV4V8PBCE3 on 2003-07-30
This is basically part three of Tolle's first book, The Power of Now. It is an easy reference to the basic "how to" stuff we need every day. It is small, easy to carry around in a purse or backpack, tuck into a desk drawer etc. I would recommend you first read The Power of Now and then go to this book. Others have gone straight to Practicing without the first book, and I think they are missing something in the overall philosophy.

Overall, and excellent resource and well worth buying when you want to get right to the heart of his philosophy.

  • Not necessary to own
    By A34PYDOF7RMLEC on 2007-03-15
If you own the book The Power of Now then you don't need this. I thought it was an actual workbook with exercises to help me practice Tolle's teaching, but it is actually a "readers digest" version of the book. I would have returned it but didn't want to lose the $3 Amazon charges for a return.

PS - this was my first almost return to Amazon and I'm very disappointed in their policy. I will hesitate to buy anything from them in the future that I am not 100% positive I want.

  • May be helpful for people with enviromental stress
    By A1NAZ112A3P35E on 2003-01-29
The book was a gift by my father, who requires it in his humanities class. At first I was impressed by the book, but later I began to realize that if just wouldn't help everyone out there who have stress in their lives. Tolle is absolutely correct about the positive "power" of thinking in the present, instead of worrying about the past or the future. However, some of his collateral comments are eccentric to say the least, and he comes across as someone who has seen and touched god, and if you spend money to buy his book, maybe you can touch god too! Look, if you want to fall for that stuff, you might as well enroll in the Church of Scientology. Like I said in the review title, someone who has been traumatized over a recent event may find some help in reading this book---it may get their neurotransmitters back in line sooner than if they havent read the book. But for someone who has had generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder for years, the chance of cognitive therapy (psychotherapy, meditation, practicing congnitive therapies in books like these, etc.) working is slim. This is because many people have a genetic basis for their anxiety, and CANNOT HELP worrying about the past and future. Unlike people who have had a temporary emotional setback and can read a book like this to get back to mental health, people with a family history of mental illness have neurotransmitters that are permanently unbalanced, and usually need drug treatment. So, before you buy the book, think about what is causing your anxiety, and ask your relatives if they feel the same as you, and for how long they have felt that way. Then you can decide to buy books like these, or to finally take the big walk into the psychiatrist's office. If you do decide to see a psychiatrist, you may want to try some natural therapies first. Some are safe, and some are dangerous, so you need to consult a book to help you. One of the best is titled The Failures of American Medicine.

  • Wait! Don't buy this if you have THE POWER OF NOW
    By on 2001-10-12
This book is exerpts from The Power of Now. I can't say anything that would do justice to The Power of Now but if you have it do NOT buy this book!

  • More of the same.
    By on 2003-06-15
The title of this book is misleading. I loved the Power of Now. I read the book and just finished listening to the 5 volume audio version. By its title, I thought "Practicing the Power of Now" would supplement the Power of Now, and include exercises and practices that would assist me in moving into the Now, finding the silent watcher, etc . . . In reality, the CD contained verbatim exerpts from the original "Power of Now," and no new material.

  • Great Condensation with Meditative Focus
    By A2RCD9LBO74GBG on 2005-04-29
For those who have read "The Power of Now," and found the meditations inspiring, you will love this little book. It lacks the lengthy question and answer passages of the original and focuses on meditations that will help you watch yourself in the present. One reviewer ("dorak") complains that this is a "watered down" version of the original and "does not feel to contain its essence." While I think is it true that this small book cannot wholly substitute for the original, it makes a great "portable adjunct." You can put it in your coat pocket or purse and take it anywhere.
In another critical review, Gail Gupton, implies that only for those who are less "spiritually advanced," or as she puts it, "just starting out on a personal journey of finding Truth," will Tolle's books be helpful. I can only say that Truth is Truth, and doesn't deign to compare. That is a game better left to ego.

  • an excellent referance book
    By on 2001-12-30
Yes, this book is an abridgement of the original. But I enjoy it more because I do not want to have to wade through the original to get to the core concepts. I myself would read this many times over before picking up the original again, its just a nice quick
outtake on all the things that made the original great!

  • Another perspective.....
    By A1J93EGDYK0IWA on 2008-01-08
I agree with the top review that this book is a repackaging of the concepts in the Power of Now. However, I disagree with this reviewer's value assessment of the same concepts presented in a different form. In my opinion, this abridged version is just as valuable as the original book, provides needed repetition which is important for breaking old habits and a structure that helps the reader not only to understand the concepts, but embody them.

I work in the psychology field and have my graduate education in Integral Psychology. I keep up on Eckhart Tolle and other authors from this genre. In my opinion, this is the most concise, eloquent and immediately accessible summary of Tolle's thought or better... direct experience or satori.

On the other hand, I don't think getting this book is a subtitute for reading the POWER OF NOW. Ideally, if you have the time, I would read the POWER OF NOW and also purchase this volume. I have found in myself and working with clients that approaching the same material from different angles very valuable and indeed necessary to bring about lasting change.

In brief, I feel this book merits a 5 star rating. I also trust that Eckhart Tolle knows what he is doing when he presents concepts in different ways that might appeal to different people. I am familiar with the body of his whole work and I see a method to what may appear to others as madness or simple repackaging of content.

A problem with satori experiences is that they are noetic (spiritually charged, capture a type of knowledge)... but often ineffable. Therefore, it seems reasonable to me that the person who had the experience will need to use lyrical language, repitition and alternate metaphors to more closely approximate what they have taken away from the wordless domain of Being. I don't think you can go wrong purchasing this book!

  • Porta-copy NOW available
    By A3Q31I4JZ1RPMQ on 2001-10-15
Tolle's new publication is a tidy, Cliff Notes version of his original text. It's great for travel and fits in most handbags. Helped me focus more quickly on living in the present moment; when I need elaborations on a meditation or practice I refer to his earlier book which renders extensive material and commentary on various topics. I would encourage other Tolle enthusiasts to read the new book first.

  • The Distilled Essence Of The Power Of Now
    By A17TDSX354MP7Y on 2005-06-24
I have had this book out from my library and will definitely purchase it. I have the "Power Of Now" already, but I can definitely see how much easier it is to implement the ideas in a practical way, using "Practicing The Power Of Now".

This book distills the essential principles of "The Power Of Now" in a way that is much easier to work with. They are almost like little meditations based on the principles of the larger book that let you get to the crux of the practice of "Being Present". By reading small sections of this at any given time you can be "reminded" to come back to "The Now".

As far as whether it's worth getting. For about the price of an extra large pizza, you can have a resource that can nourish you for years and years (of course each year taking place one present moment at a time :) )

    Highly Recommended!

    By A19VGKKJBW9D2W on 2005-12-28
I've had this audio book for years now and I only started to listen to it again just recently. On my second listen it really blew me away how powerfull this book really is.

Don't overlook the simplicity of what he says, apply some of the suggestions given and it can change your life.

I like the audio version as for me it brings the words much more to life.

  • Perfect Explanation for Being in the Now
    By A3N0FTJ5V54TS3 on 2006-01-05
This is an excellent resource that I love referring to many times I feel myself not being in the "now" and feeling out of sorts. The teachings in this book have helped me and made being in the now understandable. As I re-read many of the parts of this book, I feel better and understand more. This is a highly practical book to help you when you are worried about the future. I like this version of the "Now" books the most, because the teachings are easy to refer back to whenever I needed a quick reminder. This is an excellent book!

  • An inexpensive and low fat way of feeling good
    By A2Y1GGO6QNC1ST on 2006-03-29
I recommend Eckhart's books, it truly offers a great insight into where we can uncover happiness. Happiness requires discipline, but it sure is worth it. This inexpensive audio book is great when you are going to bed, I listen to it and I get so relaxed that I sometimes miss the ending! I listed to them over and over, and I really can't say enough. I am not some hippie or crunchy type of person- more of the drinking beer shade tree mechanic, watching NASCAR and using power tools- you get the point. You like fixing things? Fix yourself, buy this or other Eckhart Tolle books or audiobooks for those like myself that read almost never. I am taking my life in another direction and with this I treat myself a lot better, this isn't an overnight fix, but it will start your path. This may not be for everyone for their current life situation, but I was sure ready for a change in my life and I'm so glad I spent the time to heal myself, and the books make great gifts to someone you care for and if you are concerned for their happiness or lack thereof (I lend them out to people that have similar issues) A good meal makes you happy once, this could make you happier for your life. What's the risk? Will you regret for not trying? Listen to your heart on this one. Be good to yourself, good luck to all.

Although i have known people reading "Practicing the Power of Now" without having read "The Power of Now," i would suggest to either read the latter first, or both books together: start with pages from "Power of Now," then the pages from "Practicing..." to go deeper into the understanding of the original book.

The "Power of Now" is a high energy book, and "Practicing the Power of Now" helps with the understanding and practice of the tools given in "Power of Now." Reading only "Practicing..." may lead to misunderstanding the original message -- i have been holding courses in "Power of Now" with and without the use of "Practicing..." and have found that to be true with most people.

"Practicing the Power of Now" is a wonderful tool helping to LIVE the "Power of Now," and i highly recommend this book.

"When you claim well documented prior spiritual thoughts to be your own it only diminishes your credibility. I wish Tolle provided appropriate references - such as the Upanishads, the Gita, the Kashmir Shaivism, the Dhammapada and the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra. Enlightenment means complete dissolution of the ego -not the refinement of it -- so when I see Tolle trying to pass this stuff as his own - it just takes away of his claim of being enlightened. Tolle regurgitates in verbally articulate manner spiritual gossip or as another reviewer put it a rather funny manner superficial "Hippy-Dippy wisdom". "

Ultimately there are many religions but spirituality is only one and the essence of it is documented in the Upanishads.
