  • Like a little black dress...

    By AJX3MTK4LOJ63 on 2007-02-15
...this book is simple, elegant and gives you some great jumping-off points for evolving your own designs from the patterns given to get a look that's truly "you." Stefanie Japel designs beautiful, well-constructed garments with easy yet effective techniques that knitters of any level can put to use right away. Are you a scarf knitter? Want to expand your range? Try a raglan-style sweater. Are you a sweater-in-a-week knitter? Japel will give you new inspiration.

Attention handspinners and those who like to use handspun yarn: many of the projects in this book would work perfectly with handspun! Seamless sweaters tend to accommodate handspun's quirks much better than pieced-and-seamed ones, and Japel has you covered with designs to suit any figure.

If you've ever knit her patterns from Knitty or the ones she sells on her website Glampyre, you know that Japel's designs are not only beautiful, but rock-solid. They work every time, they size up well (plus-sized knitters take note) and they are easily modified to suit your personal taste. I loved this book, from the designs themselves to the overall layout, and will be gifting it to a few of my sweater-anxious knitting friends.

  • Love it

    By A3FGL6OJNBWABI on 2007-02-25
Wow, what a great book. Loads of cool and flattering knits here. I like everything, which puts this book in an elite group of perhaps 3..... When you consider I buy practically every new knitting book, that sure is something. I immediately frogged some gorgeous suri alpaca I just started using an Interweave Knits pattern, and started her ribbed vneck sweater. I've never knitted a top down sweater, or one totally in the round, and I must say it is really liberating, and the instructions are very clear. I started with this pattern firstly because I like it, and secondly because it's marked easy. Her patterns are graded into varying levels of difficulty, which is a plus. I already know what my next project is going to be, and it will be the next step up in difficulty. Now it's just a matter of finding the right yarn in my stash.....

This is also one of the few books I have which doesn't rely on expensive yarns to do the work. Most of the yarns here are reasonably priced, and would be easy to sub if you wish.

It's true that the majority of patterns are for raglan sweaters. However there are a few that aren't. Besides, altho I could be way off here, I don't see any other way you can knit a top down sweater. Unless it's a round yoke, and personally I find raglan more flattering than round yokes.

Contrary to another reviewer, I don't see any shapeless knits in here. There are a couple of knits which are not knit in the round - a very cute sleeveless lace tank which gets its shapeliness from clever use of stitch patterns, for instance, and a tube top which uses a lace panel for the same effect. These are both in my project list for summer....

There's only one problem with this book. I can't use my usual method of marking with sticky notes, as I would mark practically all of them!

I hope she publishes more books soon, as this is one designer I will always buy sight unseen!

  • OK if only you love wearing chunky yarns...

    By ACXB81ZO7H7U6 on 2007-07-26
I looked forward to this book so much! As a 'curvy' girl, I welcome any patterns and techniques which make for better fitted, bespoke knitwear - none but the slimmest can carry off the old-fashioned boxy sweater.

I was really disappointed to see that every design in this book is for chunky or aran weight yarns - there is not one single design worked in a finer guage yarn, and it doesn't matter how well a garment is fitted, big chunky yarns are never going to be flattering on a more generous body-shape. Also, lots of the patterns are for slash and boat neck-lines: not one v-necked sweater in there! When I read 'fitted' I automatically inferred 'designed to flatter'. Not so, I'm afraid. And don't be deceived into thinking the cover design is typical of the patterns in the book: it's not.

Overall, this is an interesting book if you're knitting for a willow, but curvy girls beware - this is full of big, hefty, chunky knits. If that's your kinda thing, go for it. If not, save your money - I wish I had.

Great designs, technically thoughtful, interesting without being overly tricky, and done with yarns that are easy to substitute. (No wacky gauges that force you to use only the recommended yarn.) Even though I already own shelves (and shelves) of books and patterns, and have been knitting for a long time, there are a lot of designs in here I want to start in on right away. On the "fresh idea" scale this book really packs them in, and is well worth purchasing.

  • Beautiful Book, Beautiful Projects!

    By A26ACUAPFBDC62 on 2007-03-01
Now, I am a decidedly NON-funky dresser, and yet I'm dying to cast on quite a good number of these garments. For her first book, Ms. Glampyre has delivered a stunner, and I'm so excited to hear that another one is in the works.

So, a few major plusses for the book:

    1) The projects are ALL garments, with no filler accessory patterns.
    2) They use budget-friendly yarns (we love you, Cascade 220!).
    3) There are a WIDE array of sizes for each project.
    4) The patterns span the seasons, also.

Stefanie has a very distinct design aesthetic, which helps her blend old-age and new-age influences beautifully in "Fitted Knits". I'm so glad I purchased this!

  • A Must-have
    By A1TDM4AC5643MO on 2007-02-21
I was eagerly awaiting the release of this book as I love Stefanie's other designs, and I definitely was *not* disappointed. For me, so many knitting books seem to have the same old patterns, just written by different people. I don't buy many pattern books because I usually only like one or two patterns--but I *love* and am considering making over half of the patterns in this book (and yes, I counted).

The patterns are split into four chapters (Tubes, tanks, and tees; shrugs, cardigans, and wraps; sweaters, vests, and coats; and dress-up clothes) with 24 patterns total.

Most sweaters come in a wide range of sizes; for example, the first pattern has finished bust measurements of 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, and 44 inches, which allows for a more accurate fit. And in my opinion, most of the sweaters would be flattering on a variety of body types.

I also like that she includes instructions on how to tailor the patterns to fit your body. This is why I don't understand another person's comment about the items not being 'fitted.' You can easily adjust pretty much every pattern in the book so that it works better for your body type.

I am very pleased with this book and can't wait to see what she comes up with in the future.

  • Disappointing
    By A3E10FJAN8Q9NS on 2007-08-12
When the book first arrived, I felt a small amount of disappointment; many of the garments are just plain ugly and not what I would define as fitted but still, there were a few I had planned to knit; the periwinkle vest, and the cover knit among them.

The cover knit which, incidentally was part of the reason why I bought the book as it appears to fit so nicely, as it turns out is a box with a little bit of a stitch pattern through the middle. I have yet to work out how a sweater knit straight from the armpit through hem can possibly be defined as "fitted", and appear to be shaped as nicely as the photograph; unless of course the garment is knit a bigger size and pinned to fit the model for the photographs. So I won't be knitting that one.

I did start to knit the periwinkle vest, but have given up in disgust. I began the size 34, and got to the bottom of the ribbed section, at which stage it was obvious the pattern was incorrect; I found the pattern corrections, so that was not too much of a problem. So then I finished the front increases section... I would really like to know just how my arm is supposed to fit though a raglan depth of 10cm. Close inspection of the pictures makes me think that the garment photographed is actually a size 40 and pinned to fit the model for the photographs. Which makes me start thinking, has every garment in the book been knit big and pinned to fit the model? And am I going to have a problem with the raglan depth of all of the garments?

Fitted knits? I found none here. And I certainly won't be buying anything by Stephanie Japel again!

  • Classic Yet Innovative
    By AGJ8G143LWMUQ on 2007-02-15
Stefanie Japel has long been my favorite knitting pattern designer. After knitting my first sweater from one of her earlier patterns, I fell in love with the crisp, mathematical, foolproof fashion in which she writes her patterns. And after admitting such a bias, I must admit that this book lives up to my (very high) expectations.

First of all, the book is in paperback format. But it does stay open nicely, for ease of reading patterns as you work. It is comparable in size to EZ's Knitting Without Tears.

As for the patterns, they run the gamut from classic (Cozy V-Neck Pullover) to romantic (Keyhole-Neck Blouse, Elizabeth Bennett Cabled Cardigan, Puff-Sleeved Feminine Cardigan) to young and modern (Coquette Lace Tube Top, Crisp Rectangle Tunic Top). As I first flipped through the book, there were many patterns that interested me in a purely "well, that looks innovative" sort of way. But after spending a couple days studying the book, it has become obvious that each pattern in this book is truly wearable and would be a stunning addition to any wardrobe.

While there is some repetition (3 cropped cardigans), I can see having many of my finished knits from this book become staples in my wardrobe.

Japel maintains her love of raglan construction, while also giving a nod to innovative construction or stitch patterns on more than one occasion. (Airy Wrap-Around Lace Sweater, Boatneck Bluebell Sweater, Textured Tunic)

Also of note is the adaptability of many of these patterns to handspun. As a spinner, I'm always on the lookout for pattern to display my handspun to its full potential, and this book has many patterns that would work well for the intermediate or advanced spinner who enjoys spinning worsted to bulky yarns.

Lastly, the layout of the book is stunning. All designs are photographed beautifully and include schematics. Decorative patterning (which looks much like brocade) decorates every page, breaking up the monotony of pictures and black text on a white page.

    This book is an inspiration.

  • An utter letdown and truely awful patterns
    By A39X0WZWFL0WJ on 2007-03-19
What I was expecting was a book with a good, meaty discussion of how to make a well-fitting knitted sweater: how to pick a sleeve, how to calculate an armseye, how to deal with short rows for bust shaping. What I got instead was a two-page spread on altering waist shaping and twenty-some ugly patterns in cheap yarns. Not to mention colors so bright that even I, a person who has been known to approve of magenta and yellow together, was kinda squinting at them saying, "Gee, that's a little loud".
And, news flash? Not everyone looks good in raglan sleeves, and it might have been nice to include the pattern for the nifty sweater on the cover.

I'm not sure I can get my thumbs any more down.

  • IT'S ALL RAGLAN SLEEVES!!!!
    By AD0FKPIBZZLFH on 2007-02-20
The title should be "Raglan Fitted Knits". Lovely pictures. Interesting ideas. AND IT'S ALL RAGLAN SLEEVES. If you don't like raglan sleeves -- and, alas, I don't -- don't buy this book. And, alas, I did.

Many people, especially women, look hefty, heavy, bulky, and wide in raglan sleeves even if they're not. Many people who wear them look that way and don't know it.

Also, IT'S PRINTED IN CHINA. Ironically, many knitting books are. Ignoring how cheap Chinese labor has nearly destroyed the pricing structure of the entire hand crafts market. Not to mention that Tibet thing.

Ms. Japel is very talented. But she says in the intro that the patterns have great similarity. They do. But she and the publisher should have warned people up front: Nothing But Raglan.

  • Too simple and not fitted enough!
    By A103HF5GTOL30Z on 2007-02-19
The beautiful cover led me to believe that the book would be filled with wonderfully tailored patterns. Instead, I found loose tanks and cropped sweaters. I was searching for something more classic, more defined. The photography is lovely, but it wasn't enough for me to keep the book.

  • Not as great as I expected
    By AZC6TZUZFV068 on 2007-03-13
I really like Stephanie's designs. I have purchased and made three of her patterns from her website. However, I was a little disappointed in this book. The information on fitting sweater is helpful, but not as extensive and the description led me to believe.

I don't really care for the patterns themselves. Stephanie has a really strong, specific design point of view and it comes through in these pattern. They are slightly...alternative, I would say. They have 'star trekky' look that is not for me. Not a sweater I would wear on a regular basis. I suppose that is a personal preference.

  • Good
    By A15I5J6B3EHW1A on 2007-05-07
This is a good book with many fashionable designs. They are almost all top-down raglans save for a few patterns. Several are similar to previously released patterns on her website, but they are different enough to be interesting. This book is very brand happy- I believe Cascade Yarns donated some yarn for the making of the book, which makes guessing yardage a little difficult when they only give you the amount in skiens for the reccomended yarn.

Another complaint I have is that the coat in the book would cost about $400 in yarn...that's just insane! I think it would be nice to have some alternatives listed for those who don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on knitting. Also, personally, many of the patterns are not my style. But, I am sure someone else will love them.

All in all, it's a good solid book with clearly written out patterns and fashionable designs. If you haven't made a sweater before or just love top-down raglans, this is your book! There's something for everyone here, and something for each season.

  • disappointed
    By A2VXPZXNU1B8CO on 2007-02-14
I had been eagerly awaiting the release of this book, as I am a big fan of Ms. Japel and her work. I was disappointed. I didn't think the patterns in the book lived up to what I know she is capable of, having seen a lot of her patterns other places. It seems as though she was required to tone it down a bit for the masses. The patterns and her work on her website are incredible. I was expecting some of these things to be in the book, and they are not. I found the patterns in the book not very inspiring. I don't think there is anything in the book that I would make, but many of her things online in other places that I would (and have) made.

Many of her patterns are for sale on her website, so I guess I will go shopping there for her more unique and innovative things. They're not in the book, unfortunately.

  • I'd like it more if....
    By A9AFNXDRAF9PS on 2007-03-17
if she didn't recycle some of her patterns that have already been published elsewhere. There are MANY patterns in this book that are very similar to her previously published patterns. These recycled ones I actually find to be more tame, than the originals.

Cabled Cardigan on page 75 is very similar to her Cable-Down Raglan in Interweave Knits Spring 07, Boatneck Bluebell is also uncomfortably similar to her Simple Knitted Bodice available from StitchDiva. There are *many* more and she's even listed some on her blog because apparently there have been complaints.

My last disappointment with this book is the yarns. I really don't care that some of the colors that were used were totally garish, I prefer to pick my own colors; but the pictures of the finished patterns could've been better. They all look like they've been knitted with cheap yarns, stitches are crooked, etc. I would be a bit embarrassed to put a book out and have my designs crafted as badly as these. But I am a person who prefers my knitting to look like it was purchased, than something I did at 4am.

I *do* like the book and that most patterns are top down, in the round with as little seaming as possible and there aren't any 'filler patterns' like scarves, legwarmers, knitted flower lapel pins... like so many other books on the market. That's ALWAYS a plus, but I'd suggest looking at it first to see if you already have some of these patterns and if it's worth it to buy. The revamped patterns are more tame and 'for the masses' and quite honestly, somewhat granny-ish when compared to the originals.

This really isn't a bad review, I promise! Just a bit disappointing because I already purchased some of these patterns. I hope if she does book 2, she will have some original ideas! I'll definitely pre-order!

  • Astonishing Book
    By A1U3WD4VEKLKYN on 2007-02-15
This is the first pattern book I've ever had where I wanted to make most of the patterns. The layout is beautiful, the patterns are clearly written. The patterns themselves are more classic than the designs offered on her website, but with the focus on fit and customization I think that it is appropriate. She writes for the smart reader, the smart knitter - explaining the theory so you can customize appropriately. Frankly I'm stunned. I expected it to be good, but I didn't expect it to be this good. It may end up being my favorite knitting book, especially since I am tall, short waisted, and broad-shouldered.

  • Beautiful Patterns, skillfully written...
    By APF7HRE1VHTUF on 2007-02-16
Stefanie has been my favorite knitwear designer for some time now. She combines old and new stylings with simple clean lines that appeal to everyone. She uses the easiest and most direct methods of construction, which makes her designs even more of a pleasure to knit. In addition to all of this, she gives tips and ideas on how to customize the patterns in almost any way you can think of.
I was so excited to get her book, and have had it's release date marked in my planner for months now. I was not dissapointed, it is wonderful! The patterns are what I have come to expect from this skilled designer and I literally want to knit all of them, in fact I am going to cast two of them on tonight!
    Well done Stefanie, beautiful work!

  • Unbelievable patterns!
    By AH7CBIWDTHXWA on 2007-02-20
I was lucky enough to meet Stefanie at a trade show recently, as she promoted this book and showed the original projects. AMAZING! I immediately added this book to my must-have list and started dreaming of projects, fiber, and fun.

Stefanie, also known online as "Glampyre," doesn't disappoint. The patterns cover a wide range of easier and more difficult projects, and while all fashion-forward, they aren't so trendy that they'll be passe before they make it off your needles.

    Highly recommended.

  • Beautiful and inspiring!
    By A30B1YMEPJC63X on 2007-02-26
This is a beautiful book. The photographs are gorgeous, with many closeups of the garments' details.

Stefanie's instructions and tips are clear and easy to follow. I am an intermediate knitter, and I still appreciate learning new secrets and the reasoning behind techniques. She also includes tips for beginners, such as how to wash and store a knitted item.

The patterns are coded as Supereasy, Medium, or Challenge. Even the Supereasy patterns are for real sweaters, not scarves. In fact, there are no filler patterns in this book. Every pattern is for a top, a dress, or even a suit!

This is an inspiring book, and I can't wait to work up to making the Saturday in the Park Perfect Dress (marked "Challenge", I feel a little intimidated, but I know Stefanie will guide me through it!).

  • cheap yarns, mediocre designs
    By A2D8AJ1ZK742OQ on 2007-03-18
I have been a loyal reader of Ms Japel's blog and have admired her designs in the past. However, this book was a disappointment. Her use of the cheapest possible yarns, ie Lion Brand and Cascade made even the best of the sweaters look ill-conceived. It is hard for me to be inspired when I gaze at a garment made of crappy yarns. If I am going to spend the time knitting, the yarn should reflect my talent and time. All of the design elements are very similiar and repeat each other in the garments. There is nothing in the book that I care to knit.

  • Not the book for everyone, but a very strong book nonetheless
    By APTIXK4Y948L4 on 2007-03-22
Like many others, I have been fond of Stefanie Japel's designs long before this book was published. She has done more creative variations on the top-down raglan than I could even imagine, and I can't help thinking EZ would be proud. I love being able to try on a project while making it, and don't find the lack of seams to be a problem with holding shape.

If you don't like top-down raglans or knitting in the round, skip this book---it has nothing for you.

I like that she kept the patterns at least a little challenging (no garter stitch scarf patterns, THANK YOU!). It's all sweaters in here (plus a skirt and dress) and no space-wasting instructions on how to knit and purl. She assumes a certain level of experience, at least an advanced beginner, and I found this refreshing.

That said, some of these patterns do look similar to her previous work, but I still think the book overall is worthwhile.

P.S. Stefanie in the past got criticism for choosing very expensive Tilli Tomas yarn. Now people complain that the yarn here is too cheap. She can't please everyone.

  • AWESOME!
    By A297SFFD93M1H4 on 2007-04-06
I have to admit that this wasn't one of the first books I looked at when creating my collection of pattern books. But, once I started, I couldn't believe what amazing patterns are in this! There are so many great tops and sweaters that just scream to be knitted. The directions are clear and easy to follow and there is something for everyone in this book. It is teaching me a lot about pattern construction as well as knitting techniques that I wouldn't have picked up without it. Definitely recommended for those who desire fitted, elegant but funky pieces in their wardrobe.

  • Excellent and completely wearable designs
    By A1J1KN3PF2YDBR on 2007-02-14
Just got this book yesterday and I was very impressed. She might have "toned it down" as stated in the earlier review, but the designs are completely wearable and constructed in the practical scientific approach that Japel is known for. The garments are easy to tailor to your own specific needs, and it's nice to be able to make a sweater that won't look like a burlap sack but will actually have shape to it. If you've resigned to only make sweaters that have side shaping, so as to look more flattering... this is definitely a book you would like. The yarns used are usually Cascade and easy to find without breaking your budget, and most are worsted or bulky weight with minimal seaming.

Usually when I have a new knitting book or magazine there are only a few designs I would actually consider making, but this is the first book where every page I turned I could totally see myself wearing what was designed. A goldmine of basic designs, can't wait for a knitalong to start!

  • Beautiful Desigs, Fabulous technique
    By A19RGLTJ9ACDRH on 2007-02-15
Stefanie Japel is inspired by the great knitting minds we all know: Elizabeth Zimmerman, Barbara Walker, Margaret Hubert. And while she learned from them how to create seamless, one-piece garments, her book goes to the next level. Her designs are full of up-to-the minute fashion detailing, innovative stitch patterns, unusual shapes and fabulous garments you will want to wear. She teaches in a clear and simple way how to create garments that fit really well--looking at her instructions one is not daunted by miles of pattern--in fact, she can write the instructions for a sweater in just a page or two which takes great skill. She also encourages knitters to break free from the pattern and empowers them with skillful instruction to make a garment that's just right for them. I particularly like the Alexandra Ballerina Top, the Cozy V-neck Sweater, and the Back to School U-neck Vest. Stefanie Japel takes the mystery out of having great fitting garments, in a fun, fashionable way.

  • More Fabulous Patterns from Glampyre Stef!
    By A1F35YL00K6C2M on 2007-02-15
I was so excited to finally get Fitted Knits in the mail, and it exceeded my expectations! I've been knitting Stefanie Japel's designs for several years, so I was eager to get a whole book of them. First of all, the design of the book is lovely - great photos, easy to read, and a sturdy softcover book. And the knits themselves are great! There are several variations on familiar patterns (you might see hints of Forecast, from Knitty, or her mini-cardigan), but there are also lots of brand new ideas (I'm very excited about the Airy Wrap Cardigan, and the blue vest!) There's also lots of good info about making knits fit your body. I also liked the variety of yarns - she uses Cascade, Lion Brand, KnitPicks, and others! I highly recommend this book. You may not want to knit every pattern, but there's something in here for everyone.

  • Some nice designs, but ...
    By A3BY0BDJ31ROL5 on 2007-08-16
I enjoy many of Stefanie Japel's designs, but I'm on the fence about this book. The book seems awfully repetitive -- and unfortunately, all of the patterns I like here are variations on the same theme: band of ribbing (or cabling) at the waist, bordered with purl rows; matching bands to shape the arms; stocking stitch for yoke and upper arms.

Using bands of ribbing or other stitch patterns to shape garments at the waist and lower arm is a great idea, but the motif is overworked here.

  • finally...fitted!
    By A1PIVLKCAXOBLA on 2007-02-22
I'm so happy Stefanie's book is finally here. I have made some of her patterns before and love her style and attention to fit. Her instructions are well-written and the images and design of the book are lovely. I can't wait to make the short-sleeved cardigan. I would recommend this book to any knitter looking for unique, fitted, creative designs.

  • Excited - Not Let Down....
    By A1TKH34O3RV7T2 on 2007-03-22
I'm very surprised by some of the other reviews. I'm part of a large online knitting community that seems to love this book. While there are some errata, the designs are classic and can be adapted. I recently completed my master's degree, and now am faced with ever growing student loans - the ability to make these designs with inexpensive yarn is a godsend. I appreciate an independent designer that understands many knitters have a tight budget. April 1st 2007, an ever growing group of people (currently 36) have joined a "Fitted Knits" knit along. We're all knitting from her book. People of all sizes, shapes, ages - even some pregnant. It speaks to the versatility of the patterns. It's always a bonus for me not to have a lot of finishing, which her projects offer, as the are mostly knit in one piece, from the top down. I give her a thumbs up, for sure.

  • The name says it all!
    By A2ZJ432X0LKZS7 on 2007-03-27
Stephanie Japel has done it again! This book is a wonderful collection of her inspiring designs with an added bonus section of instructions on fitting garments to yourself. You won't be disappointed!

There is currently a big movement to knit items in the round and from the top-down. Stephanie doesn't disappoint with her designs. You won't find boxy unflattering garments in this book! No wondering if what you are knitting will fit you, now you can try on the items as you knit them! How great is that? Her "fitting" section gives you tips on how to adjust the garment to fit you, so you can have a truly customized sweater.

Stephanie's pattern instructions are also very easy and simple to understand. Definitely a must have for beginner knitters who would like to move beyond scarves. She has included everything from lace to cables, and there is even a suit!

Her yarn choices aren't over the top either. As always you can use whatever yarns you prefer - so long as you get gauge. But Stephanie has chosen yarns like Lion Brand Watercolors, Cascade Pima Tencel, and many other easy to find brands.

I have been a big fan of Stephanie's designs for a long time. I've made a couple of her sweaters in the past and loved them. With all the fabulous designs in this book I will be knitting these great sweaters for a long time!

  • Quite fashionable
    By A3UM6Z0L8LQRTY on 2007-04-12
This is absolutely the best knitting book I have ever come across. Not only are the designs elegant and beautiful, the knitting patterns are really not too difficult. I have only been knitting for a couple of years and have graduated from scarves and rectangles of every size to knitting actual garments because of this book. Since all of the garments are knit from the top down with minimal seams and sewing, fittings and actually seeing your sweater come to life in one piece as you knit is very exciting. Overall, love the book, I plan to knit every sweater in at least 3 colors.
