The Kid-Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook: The Ultimate Guide to the Gluten-Free, Casein- Dietx$15.59

(34 reviews)

Best Price: $24.95 $15.59

The best kid-friendly recipes and guide to the gluten-free milk-free diet for ADHD and Autism. What it is. Why it works. How to do it.

The Centers for Disease Control reports significant increases in Autism and ADHD - both affecting primarily boys. The CDC estimates that 1 out of 175 children (age 4 to 17) currently have Autism (300,000). Before 1985, Autism occurred in less than 1 out of 2000. ADHD is much more common in that it affects 4.4 million U.S. children (age 4 to 17).

Common to both of these conditions is the negative impact of certain foods - especially milk products and glutens such as wheat(and to a lesser degree - soy and corn.) One of the challenges that parents face is coping with children who have picky appetites and crave the very foods that affect their behavior, focus and development. The other challenge is finding ways to get their children to eat healthy foods and improve their nutritional status.

The uniqueness of this book is that it not only provides gluten-free milk-free substitutes and recipes, it provides successful suggestions for feeding the picky eater. The authors share details about just how and why the diet works. The specialty ingredients are explained and extensive sources provided. There are also testimonials from the parents and from the children themselves.

  • Great resource!

    By ABAUCSB8Z7MML on 2007-01-08
I am still a bit of a novice when it comes to cooking GFCF, we have only been following this diet for a few months now, but this book makes it easy to create meals and snacks that my children will eat. The Wonderful Waffles recipe is better that anything you will find in the freezer section of your local grocery store-GFCF or otherwise-and there are lots of tips & tricks to get more nutrients into your kids. Not only are the recipes good, the info presented on the diet is done in an easy-to-read format. It is all explained in great detail, how it works and why it works. Also, at the top of each recipe, there is a key that shows which allergens are present, a real time-saver for those of us dealing with multiple food sensitivities-you know at a glance. Overall, I am happy with my purchase, I would recommend it to others, especially if you are just starting out on the GFCF diet & need some guidance.

  • Perhaps it should be 5 stars...

    By AIQPGFWKJS65Y on 2007-05-31
...but one of the cookie recipes called for Oat flour -- That's one of the forbidden, gluten-containing grains! Must be a typo.
Otherwise, this book is wonderful. Packed with the latest information, substitution rules, and a lot of recipes. The only recipe I've tried is Cinnamon Pancakes and they were fabulous. Although I'm a pretty good cook and can make up things pretty well, I've found that with gfcf baking it's best to follow a recipe and not improvise. With a lot of searching on the 'net you can find other recipes and information, but this book is really informative. And incidentally, the diet appears to be working -- my autistic son is feeling better and acting more like a normal 3-year-old after just 1 week, and I have to admit to feeling more clear-headed and attentive. Though it's a little tough getting started, it has been well worth the inconvenience. So if your child is ADHD or autistic, get this book, and if possible, transition your whole family to the diet. It can't hurt and is very likely to help.

  • A good resource for improving your child's eating habits

    By AHIGTET2CQ1HK on 2007-03-12
While I don't have an autistic child we do have gluten/lactose issues in our family and my 5 year old son has developed very limited eating habits -- lots of "white food" or carbs, sugars and very limited meat and veggies. This book gives you a lot of very good ideas of working with your child to improve eating habits and lots of good information that explains how you can break the cycle. Sneaky does work and chocolate can be your friend! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that there are some editing issues with the symbols at the top of the recipe pages -- often the symbols above say there is no egg or soy or whatever in the recipe when, in fact, there are those ingredients.

  • Great book, average cookbook

    By AKSEP8AP89LZ6 on 2007-10-05
This is a great primer on the science behind the GFCF diet and several other alternative diets for kids on the spectrum. I learned a tremendous amount from it and even identified an enzyme deficiency in my own child because of it. However, the cookbook portion leaves a bit to be desired from my perspective. I was looking for something to help me with feeding a 2 1/2 year old and this is most definitely not geared towards toddlers. Perhaps it would be good for feeding a family with middle-schoolers or older, but for the little ones, there is surprisingly little. Additionally, some of the items that are labeled in it as "soy-free" call for items that have soy in them. I don't regret buying it because I'm sure someday I'll end up using the recipes, but I still have yet to find a toddler-friendly GFCF cookbook.

  • Autism Rocks the House! GFCF Recipes Rock!

    By AIEEK7AHXKZCC on 2007-12-01
If there is any person in your household with autism, then it's time to make this book one of your best friends. Be sure to read Bette Hagman's stellar collection of gluten/casein free cookbooks as well as she is the top contender when it comes to providing information about keeping a GF/CF kitchen.

This is an excellent book that provides good information on preparing GFCF recipes and it is clearly written and very easy to follow. You get a lot of tips on how to provide nutrious snacks and meals. Good explanations about food and the recipes and the rationale for keeping a GFCF regimen are also explained. Readers get clear explanations of allergens and how to ward them off. You also get foods you will enjoy.

Again, be sure to make this book one of your best friends and it can rightfully take its place among other highly revered and happily used books about enjoying a GFCF lifestyle. Kudos to this author!

  • Food and Philosophy - Great book
    By ATSL5F4MTLT6Q on 2007-06-04
I love this book, not only because the recipes are great and easy to follow, but it gives you the reasons why certain foods are helpful and healthy. That has helped me to spin-off my own recipes and make me think that I know how to cook again. My whole family sat down to a meal together (including one daughter with PDD, one with ADHD and a French gourmet husband) and we all ate virtually the same thing for the first time in five years. Buy the book.

  • A Lifesaver!
    By A2LYEMVJNK79SV on 2007-11-13
This is a wonderful book that is easy to read, easy to understand and non-intimidating. I'm fairly new to the GFCF diet, but this book has truly made things go a lot smoother. The ideas to get vegetables, protein, etc. into your picky eater are great. I thought I had tried it all, but the authors' tips are working. We've tried about 6 of the recipes so far and they ALL have been wonderful. I highly recommend this book to those just starting the diet, or those who want some realistic tips and yummy recipes.

  • Have a Care with Unproven Theories
    By A3FPMX90W7E57O on 2008-01-08
The book espouses the opiate-peptide hypothesis, which is just a hypothesis, not a fact. Evidently some studies refute this notion, which is presented as fact in the book. I also found it frustrating that the book mentions the use of enzymes to mimic the diet, but does not elaborate or provide a resource for further exploration in this area. It could also use a section that details what to look for on a food label. That said, there seems to be a lot of anecdotal support for the benefits of a GFCF diet, and I'm a parent of an Aspie kid who's ready to try anything. The book has a lot of great suggestions for helping the picky eater, and the chicken nugget recipe is to die for (and I say this as a grown-up).

  • Wheat/Dairy allergies
    By A3DJEHGDX5EAQQ on 2007-03-28
My DD shows sensitivities to wheat, milk, eggs & cheese...traditional kid foods are out & my DD is TIRED of bringing the same thing to lunch everyday. THis book has enlightened us & given us new ideas to spin off from as well as yummy meals for the kids.

  • Best book for GFCF diet beginners!
    By A2S0K73WG2F8Z0 on 2007-11-24
If you are as confused and intimidated as I was at the thought of a GFCF diet for your autistic child then this is the book for you. This book is set up in a simple format much like a text book. The layout of the book makes it easier to understand not only the why's of the diet but the how's as well. The menu portion not only gives delicious recipes for meals and snacks but also teaches you how to make your own milk and has a section for substitutes needed to ease your child onto the diet. Prior to reading this book, I thought this diet would be impossible due to the fact that I live in a very rural area of Oklahoma and do not have access to health food stores like you would in most areas of the country. I am happy to say that because of this book we are happily beginning the GFCF diet with our 3 yr old son and are already seeing improvement. One big fat THANK YOU to the authors for their hard work!

  • Great help!!
    By A1FGKIJV83TUJR on 2007-08-26
This book really helped me to slowly implement this diet change with recipes that actually taste good to all of my kids!! And,my 9-year old autistic son appears more focused, attentive and responds on topic to multiple questions.

Dana has written the most sensitive book on this subject I've ever seen, and I've read them all! Most cookbooks on this subject say they are gluten-free and simply change the grain from wheat to some other grass. They do not admit that ALL grasses contain gluten, including cane. Dana does and she works around it. Many authors simply switch from dairy to soy drink products, Dana describes why soy is dangerous for small children due to the American genetic hybridization programs and how it causes the users' hormones to be thrown out of balance. Dana also addresses the salicylate problem (or the Fiengold diet) which most ASD cookbooks ignore. Dana labels each recipe individually thereby identifying what your child may be sensitive to. She also addresses the issue of the lack of amino acids and provides holistic natural ways to boost you childs amino acid levels. You can heal your child holistically using this book.

  • Awesome - full of information
    By AES4A6ZQES3RB on 2008-01-14
This book has given more information than I expected. It is full of allergies information and their substitutions. It is also full of any time of recipe you could think of without the gluten and casein. We eat a lot of ketchup, milk, mayo, muffins etc. This is what I needed new recipes for. I can talk my son out of the fast food, which we are already avoiding, but to talk him into giving up the gravies, sauces and breads is more difficult. This book is great.

  • Excellent resource for parents new to GFCF/Autism/ADHD
    By A3OYC953LVSC2D on 2008-01-24
Dana and Pamela have done a remarkable job of thoroughly explaining the Gluten Free Casein Free diet for parents as well as professionals. Not only does this book explain the GFCF diet but, it also gives detail to ADHD and Autism and how your child may benefit from this particular diet. I have bought a few copies for myself as well as friends, family and doctors that we work with. I am personally looking forward to a second book as the first is truly inspiring, easy to read and an asset to my book collection. Thank you Dana and Pamela.

  • Anyone Can Benefit From This Book!
    By A8FLMJJ5XI47M on 2008-02-28
You don't have to be the parent of an autistic or hyperactive child to enjoy and benefit from this book. If you simply want to learn a little about those unfortunate conditions, the introduction provides a concise description of the symptoms and behavioral patterns of each. Then the next six chapters provide background nutritional information that all healthy people should be aware of, with emphasis of course on kids. We get the lowdown, not just about glutens, casein and soy, but also on cholesterol, sugar, trans-fatty acids and others. Finally we have more than 100 pages of simple recipes, everything from snacks and treats to main courses. I have tried some of these recipes and they are scrumptious. My favorite is Glenda's Oven-roasted Vegetables, which I have had many times. The directions are simple and easy to follow and nicely presented. Even I could learn to cook with the help of this book! And if I stuck to these recipes, I'd also lose a few pounds!

  • BEST COOKBOOK YET!
    By A310D37M1ZP41W on 2008-04-20
We have been on a GFCF diet for six months. I am always looking for new recipes. I wish this was the first cookbook I had purchased because I would have saved myself a lot of money and wasted ingredients by not having to purchase the other not-so-good cookbooks. This cookbook has a wonderful variety of recipes and lots of helpful hints and tips. You will not regret this purchase!

  • Not just for kids
    By AH44NO4RHLUUT on 2008-03-04
I bought this book as soon as it came out, because my son (not a child, a young man) had consulted author Dana Laake for help with a healing diet for an autoimmune disease, and her help was invaluable. After reading the book, I felt that there was good reason to use a CF/GF diet just to reorganize my physical system, and so I embarked on it in January 2007. I was 60 pounds overweight when I started the diet. One year later, I was no longer overweight, and had not experienced a bitter battle to diet down to my proper size. I think that is because I did not crave more food than my body needed, and my system returned to health in a gradual but inexorable way.

In September, I stopped in the post office to mail some packages, and a friendly postal employee asked me how I had lost so much weight. She was a very heavy woman who had been trying hard to lose weight and was very discouraged; also her children were worried about her health. I let her borrow my copy of this book and she was pleased and grateful. At Christmas, I gave her a bag of oranges, but didn't see her at that time because she wasn't working that day. I haven't been to that branch in several months, but I stopped by this morning. She came out to the front desk and I hardly recognized her; she looks like she has shed about 40 pounds. She looks more vigorous, younger, and happier. I didn't ask her anything about the weight because I didn't generally like people quizzing me about "how many pounds" and so forth, but I said to her, "Oh it's so nice to see you again, and you look so wonderful!" and she just beamed at me.

The diet is not just a prescription for autistic kids; it is a healthful, satisfying diet that promotes health and life. The book is not just a cookbook, either; it is an invaluable guide to good eating and the habit of health.

Even if you're in perfect health, fit and trim, I recommend this book.

  • The Kid Friendly ADHD Cookbook is Kid Friendly
    By A1XQ6O22WT8CYY on 2008-05-07
I bought the cookbook because I have a child with ADHD and other issues. The chicken nuggets are quite tasty. I've also tried the frutie smoothie. It addresses issues of the five sense with food, which is terrific because if you have a child with these issues, there are many suggestions on how to get around them. I am trying the diet for my son and we'll see how it goes. There is a fair amount of recipes, but I think that the recipe section could have been more expansive and less "information" in the front of the book. There is at least 50 pages of why you should do this diet which I'm not sure was necessary. This is why I gave four stars instead of 5. The recipes I have tried are good.

  • The only cookbook you'll need
    By A25MBCUT5J0LFM on 2008-05-29
I've been trying to make my way through various GFCF diet cookbooks for years and have been unable to. This book lays out every reason why you cook the way you cook for people with food allergies ( because you may have to tell them why ) and lays it out simply! Has all the basic foods everybody else eats so your GFCF eater won't feel left out!

  • A Must-have for the Overwhelmed Family Cook
    By A9CJ97H04A5S9 on 2008-03-18
This book is very informative as to why diet modifications are so critical for children with ADHD and Autism. I was completely overwhelmed by the challenge of diet change and cooking gluten-free and casein-free. I have tried several of the recipes with varying degrees of acceptance, but the diet change is an adjustment for the entire family and eventually we will all learn to eat gluten-free and casein-free.

  • Great book to have!
    By A107GMYEYTL32D on 2008-03-25
My son just started the GFCF diet and this book is excellent in explaining how the body works when breaking down these different types of food. It also gives you lists of products to watch for hidden ingredients. The recipes sound great but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

  • Fast Delivery - Great Book - Easy Recipes
    By A24EYA6WIARQ6 on 2008-04-01

  • Almost Perfect!
    By A1XM3L86ZD03H6 on 2008-06-14
This book seems to cover it all. As a nutritionist however, I don't agree with some of the ingredients of the recipes. Well written, easy to understand and follow. Good job girls!

  • ADHD & AUTISM COOKBOOK (GFCF DIET)
    By A2OG9X4AJMBCNH on 2008-07-25
I REALLY AM ENJOYING THIS BOOK. IT HAS ALOT OF USEFUL INFORMATION. LOTS OF GOOD IDEAS FOR MEALS. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE ON A SPECIAL DIET.

  • Great for All Ages and Diets
    By A2JQV4KWK2QXXD on 2008-08-06
As a culinary educator I recommend this book highly to parents who not only have children with ADHD but also for those with food allergies. I use it as a resource since it addresses all the ingredients which are usually problems for children - soy, dairy, wheat, etc. and gives great alternatives and easy recipes to satisfy all palates. Those with allergies and intolerances will surely benefit from all the tasty recipes and information in this book. As a mom, I enjoy many of the recipes with my own kids (and they don't even have allergies or ADHD!)

  • Great reference book
    By A2ZBOF88I1IW8I on 2008-06-23
Got it after few GF/CF recipe books and its a good purchase. Excellent reference book for substitutes. Wished it had pictures of the recipes.
