Excellent for Beginner Exercisers By A3N4K1O5KDJZ9C on 2007-09-23
As a certified personal trainer (NASM, ACSM and AFFA), with over 2000 hours of training, I thought I'd provide an industry professional's assessment. Since I'm not a registered dietician, I will leave the comments on the nuitrition part of the progam to those more qualified than myself.
The exercise program is based on a Circuit Training format. Circuit training excels at burning calories and increasing muscle endurance. It is NOT the best program for building muscle mass. Also, be aware that according the General Law of Adaptation, the human body will adapt to the program in 6-to-8 weeks and start burning less calories. In other words, when a reader has plateaued, the reader will need to change his or her exercise program.
Also, in order to build muscle mass a person needs to ingest more calories than that person is burning off. Muscle cannot be built on negative calories!
With those observations aside, the book does an excellent job of explaining and illustrating thier fitness program. I especially liked photos of the exercises in the program section of the book. When I'm working with a new client, especially one with little or no experience in weight training, I spend a lot of time coaching and explaining exercises.
Better than all the other "Biggest Loser Books" By A2JFDFSJ70JV70 on 2007-11-11
This book is great. It was much more detailed than the others. I felt like I was reading exactly how the contestants on "The Biggest Loser" was losing all that weight. The book was detailed enough that as a Gym Manager, I am going to have a biggest loser contest of our own following this book to the letter! If you are looking for a complete program, or are someone whose fitness program has stalled, this book is for you! I look forward to posting our gym results in the near future to motivate even more of you!
Good Book - Bad Message By A1Z751CBVM8K0B on 2008-05-11
Let me say from the outset that if I were evaluating just the book then I may have been inclined to give it a much better rating. Unfortunately the book is touted to be based upon the hit TV series of the same name which I find to be shockingly irresponsible in its design and message. I understand that in order for a TV series to be successful it has to generate high ratings but to promote fitness programs that risk permanent damage to the participants and implicitly suggest that this is the best route to rapid and permanent weight loss is absolutely unacceptable from where I stand as a physician. When I see massively obese people being coerced to jog at full gallop; jump on trampolines with already injured limbs: punch heavy bags that a pro-boxer would find challenging, I have to raise some serious objections to the message being conveyed.
One of the most important points for those starting out on a weight loss program is to start off slow and avoid injuries. The injuries you sustain in an effort to lose weight too quickly can rapidly derail a weight loss program and can lead to long term damage that can come back to haunt you.
Sure, anyone can lose weight in a concentration camp environment; but to lose weight, and keep it off in a normal life setting is an entirely different situation. Having personally lost almost 60 pounds in less than six months and kept it off for over nine years, I can attest to the fact that you need to integrate a good diet and exercise program into your everyday lives and begin with a safe and effective program. I implore people to ignore the "boot camp" type approach to weight loss and instead incorporate a realistic program that does not risk permanent injury to the joints, tendons, spine and heart.
That said, I do believe that this book has some very useful information, which I might add, is quite different from the message conveyed in the show. I especially like their emphasis on a combination cardio and circuit training.

Buy together... By A1PFDU4XT62OV3 on 2008-01-01
I bought this book after having read the original "biggest loser" book. and i STRONGLY recommend buying them together. especially if you are just starting out. this book is as it says a "fitness book." it does not provide all the inspiring stories of the people on the show, and all the helpful information to start you out like the other one does. This book does provide you with several new exercises to add to your circuit to provide you with variety so you don't get bored. I have lost 51 pounds since september following their exercise program (not even following it exactly, but closely) and following the nutritional guidelines and suggestions they give. i feel great, and i have been able to try several new activities and been surprised by my ability to do them. These two books are the best purchases i have made for myself in years. Bob is such an inspirational trainer. and i can't wait to see what the next 12 weeks brings :o)
Some aspects are missing... By A3ET9BD0YV6SS8 on 2007-10-18
This is a good book for fitness. However, the NBC show was about loosing weight and becoming a new and healthy parson, not just about building your muscles. As a reader I was missing a number of other parts in the whole spectrum of taking care of my body. We all agree that being a couch potato while trying miraculous diets will bring us nowhere.. In my opinion the opposite is also true: focusing on "pumping irons" alone is equally fruitless. One might get better shaped body but it is not what we are looking for, are we? We need more comprehensive, holistic approach to bringing ourselves in shape. Exercise, proper food combination, external and internal body hygiene, proper breathing and relaxation methods -- these are all equally important parts of losing weight, and attaining health and fitness. I suggest checking the book titled Can We Live 150. It encompasses many of the aspects I missed in this book.
- A bit overhyped
     By A3R74EHB34JTTP on 2008-07-05
I tried to like this book, but it truly is for fans of the show. If you cut out all the references to participants from the show, it's about 1/2 as long! (And since I wasn't a follower of the show, the names have no meaning for me. Diet and fitness books always have an overabundance of "success" stories anyway. That's great, but that person's work schedule, lifestyle, food preferences, health history and body type aren't mine, so I can't relate.)
But what bothered me was the misnomer "time-saving," because it definitely isn't, and for any workout to succeed for me, it has to be one I have time to do. People on the show worked out for hours each day. (And why do personal trainers think finding a couple of hours to work out every day as no big problem for those of us in the real world?) Nowhere in the book does it ever say how long you can expect these workouts to take. By my estimate, 45 minutes to 90 minutes, at least 3 times a week - more days a week if you add a separate cardio as suggested). In fact, as you get more fit the workouts take even longer. This is neither time-saving nor time-efficient. If this is the block of time I have available to work out, that time isn't going to increase just because I'm fitter, and this book doesn't account for that at all.
One other note: although the book lists the equipment you need, they left out a step or bench. You'll definitely need that, too, for one of the exercises.
All in all, this is book for fans of the show who have very flexible schedules. For everyone else, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
- User Friendly
     By A1HVJSCHMYHOH5 on 2007-12-01
This fitness program book is very inspirational as well as user friendly. After reading the book, you feel confident that you can implement all of the moves. The small pictures of the moves and a description of each all on one page is priceless!

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my daughter. She is into fitness and reads all forms of fitness magazines and works out daily. She LOVES the show and tells me constantly that she adores this book as it offers "home" routines when you can't make it to the gym.
I also got her the cook book which she has not made several of the meals that are easy (she doesn't cook) and taste delicious!
Good gifts mom!

I actually bought this book as a gift for my Mother. She loved the book. She said the exercises were exactly what she was looking for and helped her design a workout program for herself. We are both using this book as well as the Weight Loss book and Cookbook. They are great tools to use together.

- Great!!!
     By A1URWCCSPKJECO on 2008-02-27
The book is very interesting and didactic. Full of tips to make the reader really gets into the good shape and good health worlds. The book not only has many pictures to help the reader to execute the movements properly, but also it has a lot of tips to make the exercises more difficult. Unfortunately, the book does not do the entire job by itself. We have to go to the gym!!!!!!!!!
