  • Two Brothers Expose Secrets That Could Cost Google Millions!

    By A3PRNVL6TGSOZ4 on 2007-01-24
Right, like Google would care about a measly few million!

There are three things that you should know about this book before you buy it.

    1. Sure, the title says that it is a book about Adwords, but really it is a complete guide to overhauling your business. Yes, you'll learn more about the intricacies of how Google works, how to make Adwords work better and how to save yourself a ton of frustration in the process. But, more importantly, you'll be challenged on how you think about, plan for and execute your business.

    2. Perry and Bryan are not huge fans of "Dilbert-Cube" environments (i.e. nameless, faceless corporations.) So, if you roll that way, prepare to be offended. This book is not for guys that have tens of millions of dollars in their ad budgets and are more worried about promoting their brand than getting sales dollars. This book is a must read for all the millions of businesses out there who need to drive customers to their shops, plants and agencies - now!

    3. This is not a get rich quick book. What Perry and Bryan prescribe is a tough look at your business and a clear pathway to get the kinds of customers you want to be the kind of business you want to be. Don't expect to read this book, buy a couple of keywords and have money rolling in tomorrow. Those days are over. But, if you want to capture a sustainable, profitable niche, then this book needs to be in your arsenal.

There is one thing that bothered me about the book. It frequently changes tenses. Sometimes it's Perry writing, using "I" and then sometimes is Bryan writing, referring to himself as "I". It is a bit disconcerting and unclear who is writing, but it hardly detracts from the overall effectiveness.

So, if you'd like to keep some of your hard earned money from Google, and like to see your business become more stable, and make a ton more cash in the process, then read this book.

  • Good information, but too many endorsements

    By AEDPIWBRJ7EQ on 2007-11-07
Before this book, I was a complete AdWords newb. But bear in mind I was not a newb to internet marketing. I was pleased to find that for the most part, the book was full of very good information. It is good enough to get any novice up and running quickly. However, I did have a few complaints:

    1. As another reviewer mentioned, there seems to be a problem distinguishing which author is writing at which time. Not that it matters all that much. But it did become confusing more than once.

    2. I found the discussion on quality score to be somewhat limited. Maintaining a favorable quality score is something that many adwords advertisers have a problem with. Consider a more thorough discussion of this in the next edition.

    3. Finally, this leads me to something that ticked me off more and more as I read the book. I was very disappointed to find that the authors heavily (and I mean heavily) promote products and services within the book that lacked sincerity. For example, the authors promoted their own services (and opt-in lists), friends services, and even services from companies paying them some sort of commission for mentioning them in the book. For the latter, it was not made extremely obvious, but anybody that is in internet marketing could spot this. For example, WordTracker's url is www.wordtracker.com, not www.wordtracker.info as mentioned in the book. I'm sure the .info was merely set up as a means to count referrals to the WordTracker service. To the authors, I would remind them that writing a book is different than your every day internet marketing efforts. Of course it is a great opportunity to expose the audience to your own brands and services, but lets keep in mind that people are actually paying to hold this book in their hands. I really found it deceitful that the authors have treated this book like an opt-in list where they attempted to sell sell sell. On a side note, the thing I have learned over the years about internet marketing is there are very few tools you have to actually pay for. And that reminds me, don't even bother with the "supplement" to the book (perrymarshall.com/supplement). It doesn't offer any quick information or tips. Only more chances to Opt-In, and more chances to buy stuff. I look at it as a wasted opportunity to provide some real value to the reader. In the next edition of the book, I would love for the authors to focus on more of the great free tools that are out there, and forget about getting those kickbacks from WordTracker and other companies. If you genuinely love WordTracker, send them to WordTracker.com. Forget about this WordTracker.info nonsense. That's just stupid. Provide great value to your readers, and they will love you for it. Trust me.

Summary: If you decide to read this book, read it for the content and marketing principles that are discussed. Take the website and tools endorsements with a grain of salt.

  • A must-read for Internet marketers

    By A2RQ0AT4XZUIXL on 2007-03-24
Recently I heard a talk by a self-style Internet marketing expert. She was completely unfamiliar with even the basic techniques mentioned in this book. Hello?!

That's why Perry Marshall's book is so important. You can spot the phonies who take your money with vague promises to drive traffic and manage your accounts.

Perry Marshall's other products are huge: it's daunting to start on a series with 6 CDs and a humongous manual. This one is a good way to break into the basics.

I met Perry once at a conference. He is the Real Deal: unassuming and straightforward. So is this book.

  • Book Is Not Up To Date

    By A23DLDHF1UQB6O on 2007-07-19
I've got the book and the screen shots - despite the 2007 copyright - are out of date which pretty much renders the book useless. Of course if you're sitting with a book looking a screen shots that no longer exist on Adwords it can be more than a little frustrating.

You're just as well off stumbling though the help menus on the Google ad words web site and buying a decent book on advertising. Most of what Marshall writes are old bromides. Not that they're bad... but they're certainly not unique.

  • Perry's done it again - superbresource

    By A1ANXIZBD1C976 on 2007-01-19
Perry Marshall is well-known as the world's top Google adwords expert. I've used Perry's tactics to make tens of thousands of dollars in my adwords campaigns, and I even interviewed him for my writingadwords.com site -- so be sure to grab Perry's latest book.

One of the things I like best about Perry's knowledge is that he's tested various campaigns, and helped many clients run many adwords campaigns - so he knows what Really works, and what doesn't, based on a rich background of actual campaign results.

Investing in Perry Marshall's training, and resources like this superb new book, is "money in the bank", if you're interested in using Google adwords. Perry's the "go to" guy for Adwords - highly recommended.

In this latest book, Perry updates his tips and techniques, and overdelivers as always - buy this book right now.

  • Don't Read This Book!
    By A189LEOTCEU24P on 2007-01-23
This is what I would tell my competitors if I had the chance...

If you are looking for a step-by-step guide to getting up and running with Google AdWords in record time this is the book.

If you follow the steps that Bryan and Perry teach in this book you'll run circles around your competitors. This book will take you by the hand and show you all the tips and strategies that Bryan and Perry have discovered over the past 5 years or so. I can't believe they packed so much into this book.

What I really like about the book is that it is written in a natural voice that makes it easy to understand. There is no confusing geek speak. If you are a beginner or a pro this book is easy to read and grasp.

I manage Google AdWords for my clients on a daily basis and I've been using AdWords since the day of its conception. I've generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for my clients using Google AdWords and I still find this 25 dollar book valuable enough to have on my desk with dog-eared pages, pencil marks and post-it notes on the pages.

I strongly recommend that you buy this book today and keep it on your desk for daily reference.

I hope you find it as useful as I do!

  • Perry's Ultimate Guide is required reading in our company
    By A3HAFW7SKNX8QE on 2007-01-22
If you're looking for a book to help you really master the art and psychology of succeeding online with Google AdWords, this book is your 'go-to' guide.

Going far beyond the mechanics of setting up your Google AdWords account, Perry covers ground where most books on the subject leave off, critical ground like:

*How to improve the conversion (ultimate sales) of your PPC landing pages, even when you have a site that is not an ecommerce store (such as a lead generation site)

*How to pay less for your Google clicks and get more clicks (the right way to organize your campaign, how to split test ads to get lower costs, adding negatives to improve your CTR, etc)

*How to test a concept you're not sure will sell (headline tests, keyword research using tools outside of AdWords, long tail keywords)

*How to use Google to reach prospects shopping for products in your local area (including how to structure two campaigns to reach folks who use your city in their search and those who don't)

*How to use auto responder email to follow up with prospects who arrive at your site and didn't buy (increasing the value of your clicks over time)

*Why tracking your conversions with both Google Conversion Tracker and Google Analytics takes the blindfold off and allows you to bid and manage your Google campaigns like a pro

This book is required reading for my PPC account management staff.

Once I read it (I had it pre-ordered months ago based on how much I enjoyed Perry's Definitive Guide to Google AdWords), I immediately ordered several additional copies so each PPC Account Manager on my team could have their own copy to highlight, dog-ear, and read over and over again.

  • Not worth the score
    By A1LRVSIRK3SUDB on 2007-03-16
I brought this book because of its high rating. It is just a disappointment.

    1. It is too wordy -- Key opinion can be summarized in 10 pages.

    2. Too much irreverent topics - only the first 100 pages is about adwords. The rest of 200 is irreverent.

    3. Nothing new - you may learn more if you search "adwords trick" in google.

  • A "must have" for better Google adwords results
    By A2Q7X4FOUI755D on 2007-04-08
This book is an indispensable guide for beginner to intermediate level Google adwords advertisers. While the Google site has a thorough range of tutorials, they almost exclusively focus on the MECHANICS of Google adwords: how to do specific, basic tasks. Marshall and Todd's book is focused on STRATEGY: how to get maximum results from your Google ads dollars by understanding how the program works. Big difference. The chapters are short and focused, the writing style is clear and understandable, the case histories are relevant. Given the amount of hype proliferating the Internet and its financial potential, I appreciate the fact that the authors are very grounded and pragmatic about what it takes to succeed with Google. No pie-in-the-sky claims, just straightforward nuts and bolts training! The only criticism is that many of the screen capture shots are too small to be easily legible. Learning to advertise with Google adwords requires a significant learning curve. This book won't necessarily shorten or flatten that curve, but it will enable the committed reader to improve their Google adwords results.

  • Be careful.....

Perry Marshal provides a few insites that are worthwhile but the book comes off as being one big ad for more Perry Marshal products and services. I am always nervous when accepting advice from someone that has something to gain from my actions.

  • Marketing & Sales Battle Plans for Scrappy Entrepreneurs...
    By A3C3DIHD4LZ81C on 2007-01-29
...it would work for the juggernauts too- but they'd never consider using it. Thank goodness. Us small guys get a real break.

Not an adwords book alone by the undisputed King of the Realm, this is a song, from cover-to-cover on scientific advertising, total quality management, incessant incremental improvement (sometimes with pretty big 'increments')and CRM. Unlike those former and current programs, this is written in a very flowing style, full of real-life examples, and no fluff.
I always highlight books on 1st read- I've got to say that my poor yellow highlighter is crying as I close the book- there's a whole lot of yellow in there, unlike most 'marketing' books I own. I've bought 'Guru' ebooks for 100 times as much that didn't have one tenth the value of this one book.Perry and Todd could have easily marketed it that way, but chose not to, to our great benefit. And on top of that, purchasers get an online supplement worth $85! It's apparent that these guys care about us (well, those other guys 'care' too- enough to empty our pockets as often and as completely as possible).
This is MUST reading for any little scrappy entrepreneur that wants to eat some of the big boys' lunch without going bankrupt (and most won't even know what hit them).
And think of how much fun a huge and growing ROI will be- when it's finally yours.

  • Marketing Gold
    By A3HV4PWUMTPYUF on 2007-04-16
The Ultimate Guide lives up to its name. I have been involved in internet marketing for 6 months and this book is head and shoulders above the rest of what I've found in explaining Adwords, at a fraction of the cost.

Perry Marshall not only gives expert advice he does it clearly without talking down to the reader. I found that this is not just an Adwords how-to book. Concepts and techniques can be applied across the internet markteting spectrum.

My first (successful) Adwords campaign began after reading chapter 4 (I couldn't wait). Using what is taught in just the first 4 chapters in one week my return on investment was 235%. I continued to read through chapter 8 applying the principles and techniques and tweaks. After week 2 my ROI was 436% and cost per click was less with $626.00 net profit. I'm still reading tweaking and testing.

This is absolutely incredible for a beginner who 6 months ago did not even know what Adwords was.

In all, this is a pretty comprehensive guide packed (don't be fooled due to lack of hype) with information on Adwords and internet marketing. Any one who desires to know how-to make money on the internet will save time and money when they invest in this one.

  • Lost in Translation - Great for a Speech - not a Book
    By A1IXQ52IIDXGK9 on 2007-08-16
For those of you who are interested in Google AdWords - You might find this book inspirational. You might even get that basic understanding of how Google AdWords works. If you like motivational speakers - you might like this book a lot.

When it comes to teaching about technology - I do not need a motivational speaker - I need clear, concise, tutorial like approach to the subject at hand.

Perry provides many loose examples to support his chapters, but they were not consistent. It would have been better to use a single example (like a fake company profile) and use it throughout the book. Because he is a consultant for many clients, Perry jumps from one type of client to another, often within the same paragraph or supporting text. Basically his writing sounds like a motivational speech on "Ways to Become Rich By Marketing on Google" I was hoping to get "The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords"

Sorry Perry - your writing voice was comforting, but not very well suited for Technical Guide Books.

  • Save Thousands!!
    By A28278LW0DENKY on 2007-02-12
This is the best book. It will save you thousands of dollars in lost revenue by making your advertizing efforts as leveraged and then optimized as possible.

Truly the best book available to date on pay-per-click advertising and landing page optimization available on the market. It's so dense with useful content that I can say without a doubt you'll save a ton of money by not attending anymore online marketing guru seminars. Not for thousands of dollars either; it's under twenty bucks folks.

Perry spells it all out here...really. Just do yourself a favor and stop following anyone else's advice until you've read and reread this book and applied it's teachings. If you heed this advice you'll join the ranks of the "highly skilled online marketer" and you'll have the bank account to prove it. And you won't need to follow anyone ever again. Understand?!

When people ask me who the most knowledgable person about Google AdWords is, I don't hesitate a moment. I say "Perry Marshall". And Perry's book is by far the most comprehensive guide for using Google AdWords. There is none better, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone wanting to use Google's contextual advertising tool. • Not worth it (unfortunately)
    By ALEEVLIE1D2GY on 2008-01-28
Considering Perry Marshall's reputation, I'm surprised to see that he released such a generic and self-promoting book.

Like way too many books out there, this book provides no real insight. The books spends a healthy amount of space comparing effective ad copies, but most of us with any sense at all can do that on our own.

If you want to know makes effective ad copies, just study all the sensationally-worded and fabricated book reviews of this product!

Like many reviewers have mentioned, the author keeps pitching his own
services and his cronies way too much.

It's also pretty transparent to see that most if not all the other 5-star
reviews are from the author or his buddies.

"AdWords for Dummies" by Howie Jacobson is better organized and more thorough.

Sensational title. Material not worth it. Shame on such a famous author for releasing a wasteful book.

  • Perry Marshall Is The King of Adwords
    By A39NJFENRABKW6 on 2007-01-11
If you're using Adwords and you haven't met Perry Marshall, your income is about to soar. Perry has cracked the cracked the code to cashing in on Adwords. This book has something for everyone from absolute beginners to advanced users.

Perry presents practical strategies that work at multiplying your return on investment (ROI).

If you're using Adwords and you aren't following what Perry Marshall teaches, you are probably feeding the ravenous Google monster and leaving cash on the table.

Don't just get this book. Devour it.

The book transforms your Adwords campaign into deposits into your bank account.

If I could give this book 10 stars I would.

  • Hits it out of the park
    By AS1QK2X3DYFL8 on 2007-01-29
Perry Marshall has hit a homerun with this book. He takes you baby step - by baby step on how to apply the concepts to your own pay per click campaigns - BUT it goes one step further - because Perry's formulas aren't limited to just the Googlesphere - you can apply the exercises at many levels in your business, in both pay per click, organic search and conversion.

  • Priceless
    By A3KPD3WLML2Q4E on 2007-03-08
You may be tempted to think this book is just about internet marketing and Google Adwords. It is not. While the central theme is about Google Adwords, there is a wealth of information and advice that applies to running any business.

Perry Marshall is a well known and highly respected expert on Google Adwords. So when he provides information, you should listen.

This book is extremely well written and easy to understand. It is filled with specific examples and gives you step by step instructions on how to implement the advice being given.

As an added bonus, there are selections from Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins (written in 1923 and considered a real classic on advertising) . If you did nothing other than read and implement the "Uncle Claude Sez" inserts at the end of each chapter, you would more than pay for the cost of this book.

There are plenty of tools and sources that will help you in making your online (or offline business for that matter)more profitable.

Follow the steps given in this book and you will greatly increase your internet traffic. There is some great solid lessons about the value of testing, testing and then testing some more. Perry and Bryan make it easy to follow and implement. However they do make the observation that most people are rather lazy and will not make the effort to really do the work necessary. They make the point that internet marketing is a real business and if you treat it like a business, it can be highly profitable. However, treat it casually and it will never fulfill your dreams.

Well worth reading, even if you never plan to run an internet business. There a couple of groups that probably hope you don't read it, Google - cause you will slash the cost of your Google Ads and your competitors - cause after reading you will be a much sharper competitor.

  • Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords
    By A3U8BQHHQOLSLY on 2007-03-10
For those of us who need this kind of assistance, this book is excellent. If you are not a guru at this, just take it a chapter at a time and give it time to sink in. When you understand it and can act on it, then move on. Eventually you reach the end and your adwords campaign is clearly better for your efforts. The books best point is the way in which it is condensed to include only what you need to know and not a lot of extra stuff. My only complaint with it is that I don't believe the chapter on SEO was as well written and on that subject I am still in the dark. It's a worthwhile book to purchase and learn from.

  • Perry Did It Again!
    By AIGIX8DE6933Z on 2007-03-12
As a previous customer of the Definitive Guide to Google Adwords, I didn't figure this printed book would be better. It might be a lite version of the massive PDF book that Perry wrote.

However, I got to know Bryan Todd, Perry and so many other things about Adwords that I had no idea.

Perry really did deliver in this one.

After reading the entire book in just 2 days (50% each way on the airplane) I almost plunked down whatever fees I would to get access to my account just to tinker with some of the suggestions.

If you are wondering if the two books are different they are without a doubt.

I think they compliment each other but this printed copy really has some interesting insights the PDF book does not.

The Definitive Guide really digs into setting up campaings and such.

The Ultimate Guide really brings some light to issues not addressed.

Overall it was a fantastic read and a MUST have for anybody who's into Adwords or is even considering that aspect of marketing and traffic.

You will save yourself the cost of the book in just one day by using the techniques contained in here and your CTR's will soar!

  • Good for Beginners
    By A3BZY4Z1DHEDIL on 2007-03-24
I have had a lot of experience with AdWords before I read this book. I would recommend this book if you are just getting started with AdWords, but if you are experienced already, it may not teach you much.

  • General, not technical
    By AMIR3CC4R3RSE on 2008-05-13
My company does AdWords campaigns for many clients, so I am always looking for ways to increase performance and lower costs.
But I bought this book because I was looking for a true guide to Google's AdWords. What all the terms really mean. I was looking for the Ultimate Guide to How to Use AdWords, not how to create ads.
There is almost no technical in this book. It tells you how to organize the groups, but not how to go on Google AdWords and create them. It doesn't tell you the step-by-step process of making this work. There are no instructions.
There is a lot of general marketing advice, and some of it is good, but if you are buying this book to sit at your computer and actually make an AdWords account from scratch, you will be confused and disappointed.

  • Great "hands-on" guide book
    By AL0PDBARAL7BE on 2006-12-31
If you want a real-world, practical guide to getting the most from Google AdWords, this is it. I found it hard to put down. Packed with great advice and "usable" examples.

  • Perry IS 'da man' when it comes to Adwords!
    By A1T4J6U75HM2SD on 2007-01-12
I haven't even read this new book of Perry's yet (feel free to send me a review copy Perry ;) ), but I know it will be up to his usual EXCELLENT standard.

I have spent well over $1,000 purchasing Perry's info products over the last 2-3 years, and they have ALWAYS overdelivered on value, quality and raw hard-hitting "in the trenches" tips, strategies and concepts.

I have taken what I learned from Perry's original "Definitive Guide to Adwords" and his Adwords coaching program and forged a brand new career as an Adwords expert here in Australia.

I now manage clients spending tens of THOUSANDS of dollars a month, and find the whole adwords game quite exhilirating. More importantly, it's a thrill to help my clients bring in new sales leads, sell products and services and perform market research with Adwords.

Thanks HEAPS Perry - you changed my life for the better, without even knowing it. You're one of the very FEW people whose emails I read whenever they hit my inbox, compared to the massive collection of hype-infected "internet marketing gurus" that are out there...

In fact, I just did a purge of all my email subscriptions I get from various Internet Marketing "gurus", and Perry is one of the FEW left standing after the smoke cleared.

So, my personal recommendation - even without having read this book - is to buy it. I am 110% sure Perry & Bryan (his RH man) will have done a damn fine job of teaching the ins & outs of successful Google AdWords campaign setup and management.

Oh, yes, I will be ordering a copy of this book :)

  • For once cod liver oil sold at cod liver oil prices...
    By API4F4N3G8DUA on 2007-02-09
Perry Marshall belongs to a loathesome breed - the internet marketer. These guys are all out trying to hawk overprice "big box" seminars full of hideous video material in beige hotel conference rooms and 25 hours of badly recorded telephone audio for $297, $397, $897 and $997 (preferred price points for this dross).

Why not just write a coherent book? It takes a lot less time for us to read and can be packaged and sold for far less.

Well I think I've answered my own question. In short, internet marketing gurus are out to waste our time and pilfer our money. Hype and selling us "the secret" over and over again are their stock and trade.

Out of this sad lot, Perry Marshall happily enough is one of the best. He can write cogently and has the gift of teaching what he knows to others. His particular talent is for Google AdWords.

In this book, Marshall and co-author Bryan Todd give you a good grounding in online marketing and some good specifics on AdWords. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality and breadth of information. I also own Perry Marshall's Definitive Guide to Google AdWords. There is a certain lack of depth, but all of internet marketing cannot be fit into a single relatively slim volume.

The problem with Perry Marshall is that he started his marketing career in MLM (multilevel marketing) and never entirely outgrew it. He has made a lot of hay about having been an Ambot (Amway drone). That's not the kind of thing I'd want to crow about ("my past life as a gay geisha" ought to be less embarassing). This book looks like Marshall's first real attempt to outgrow that psychology ("drain them for all their worth and never let go").

But that's just on the surface. Marshall's admitted goal here is to get you to buy into the rest of his gear (prices start at $99/pop for MP3's of two hour telephone conversations) and to get himself some mainstream media credibility. Be forewarned: Snort your free line but don't get a blow habit.

    [...]

Overall if you are interested in AdWords - and especially if you have an allergy to snake oil salesmen - you shouldn't miss Andrew Goodman's very good (and hype free) book Winning Results with Google AdWords also available as a real book (and not an overpriced ebook). On his Goodman's website, he has a special offer for both his report and his updates, together with the print book.

Both Marshall's Definitive Guide and Goodman's books are starting to date so the Ultimate Guide has a place on one's shelf (February 2007) just for the freshness of the information. You will have to keep up with the subject on either Goodman's website [...] PPC doesn't stand still for anyone. As I write this, Yahoo is entirely relaunching their own PPC system (ex-Overture).

  • The Authors Have Been There, Done That
    By A1M8PP7MLHNBQB on 2007-03-02
Google AdWords is one of the two big things that Google does to generate revenue (the other is Google AdSense). When you do a search on Google, you get a page back from them that lists the web sites best meeting the criteria you inserted. If you're put in a common search term you might get 1,276,893 sites that meet that criteria. Not too helpful. But off to the right, and perhaps across the top, you'll get some 'Sponsored Links' -- those are AdWords.

Your web site by itself might be site number 659,235 that Goodle will show (if anyone will scroll down that far). But if you pay Google a few cents each time it's clicked on you can get your site listed in the column on the right.

This book is all about how to use AdWords. How to select the search words where you want your ad to appear. How much to bid for each click. How to test ads. How to use Google's tools. Google's rules. There's a whole book here, and it's full. But if you're trying to drive hits to a web page and sales from the hits Adwords is probably your best bet. And it's clear that these guys know what they're talking about.

  • Effective AdWords Information
    By A25S4TB35JRNEK on 2007-04-10
This is the best and most comprehensive information on AdWords I've seen, and I've seen a lot in the past year. It is direct, simply put, and to the point with very little "hype". I reccommend it highly to anyone that is a serious Google AdWords "wannabe". Jim Methvin

  • OH MY GOSH, BUY THIS BOOK!
    By APVA67CYYVPDK on 2007-08-06
This is a simple review: buy this book. Before I bought this book (on a whim), I was wasting SO much money on adwords. Why? Well, after reading this book, it became glaringly obvious to me that I had NO IDEA what I was doing when it came to adwords. I was doing EVERYTHING all wrong. This book set me straight AND profitable. Ahhh... advertising that brings in more money than you spend. What a breath of fresh air. Read this book. You will NOT be disappointed.
