Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips (Crazy Sexy)x$0.49
    (50 reviews)
Best Price: $17.95 $0.49
An advice-from-the-trenches cancer survival guidebook for young women with cancer. Actress and photographer Kris Carr thought she had a hangover, but a Jivamukti yoga class didn't provide its usual kick-ass cure. A visit to her doctor confirmed her "liver looked like Swiss cheese," covered with cancerous tumors. She entered trench warfare (wearing cowboy boots into the MRI machine, no less), vowing, "Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!" She began writing and filming her journey, documenting her interactions with friends, doctors, alternative "quacks," blind dates, and other women with cancer--sadly a growing group. These include hip, young women such as illustrator-author Marisa Acocella Marchetto (Cancer Vixen), Glamour writer-editor Erin Zammett (My So-Called Normal Life), MTV personality Diem Brown (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), model Sharon Blynn (founder, Bald Is Beautiful), and music manager Jackie Farry, among others.
The Learning Channel is broadcasting the premiere of Carr's unforgettable documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer on August 29, 2007 @ 9:00-11:00pm (ET/PT).
CRAZY SEXY CANCER TIPS gathers the lessons learned and advice offered from Carr's own journey, as well as the experiences of her cancer posse. Full-color photos accompany personal stories and candid revelations in this scrapbook of advice, warnings, and resources for the cancer patient. Chapters cover your changing social life, dating, sex, and appearance; essential health tips on how to boost your immune system; recipes; medical and holistic resources; and information on young survivor support groups. The resulting book is a warm, yet informative tool for any woman newly diagnosed with the disease and for those who love them.

Ambivalent. By A1XO7FAR1JIS1L on 2007-11-10
I was diagnosed with cancer two years ago at the age of 32 and at the time I certainly yearned for cancer guidebooks and first-person narratives that reflected my experience as a "young" person with cancer. But I'm not sure if this book would have helped me. Page after glossy page, it makes cancer seem like more fun than it really is. Crazy sexy beautiful cancer babes? I'm all for empowerment, but cancer treatment makes you feel like utter garbage. I can imagine coming home from a chemo-vomit-fest at the hospital to open up a book filled with beautiful, thin, made-up, well-coiffed women (who, of course, have dashing, heroic boyfriends and husbands who always make them feel better) -- only to feel that I don't measure up. What, now I have to feel sassy and sexy when I'm being poisoned by intravenous drugs? How about a book for the rest of us, with our imperfect bodies and hairdos and our romantic partnerships with fallible human beings who don't always save the day? I appreciate the spirit of the project, but the book would have been improved with some glossy photos of these beautiful women looking and feeling like death warmed over. It's great to have your spirits lifted, and to be reminded that you're still "crazy and sexy" even though you have cancer -- it's great to refuse to be defined entirely by the disease. But let's not pretend that cancer isn't terrifying and devastating and painful and isolating, and that sometimes you just WON'T feel good. Cancer is a grim, ugly thing. Let's not paper over that with fancy makeup and pink ribbons. A truly empowering book would embrace the ugly AND the beautiful sides of the experience. I think the author had the right spirit; I think the publishing company's marketing department just got the best of her.
Great Book!! By A1B4VJS4K00900 on 2007-08-02
As a recent Breast Cancer survivor, I can tell you that this book was my favorite "cancer" book. Like everyone who is diagnosed with cancer, I spent hours researching on the internet, and reading various "what to expect" books. After all that, I cannot tell you what a pleasure it was to read CrazySexyCancer!
As a cancer survivor, you realize while reading this book that "Oh Yeah, I have been in that exact situation" many times. Maybe, at the time, you didn't see the humor in it, but reading Kris's book you will now! Kris offers sound and practical advice from talking to your Doctor and nurse, playing the cancer card, working on your attitude, dressing up, and eating correctly. Her style is humorous and irreverent, but with a deep understanding from someone who has looked at the abyss and said, "OK, let's jump!" I especially liked the stickies, or post-it notes, throughout the book, making you feel like you really are communicating directly with the author. My all time favorite stickie is the one we can all relate to, "Why Me?"
My only criticism of this book is that it is targeted to an audience of young women. As a 54 year old breast cancer survivor, I loved reading this book and I know that women of all ages would enjoy it. Now, women my age will skip over the "Fertile Hope" section, but will still find plenty to read that applies to them. I have already bought several copies to give to friends, and to put in the Cancer Wellness Center in my area. This book is "must have" for the bookshelves of any Cancer Center. All women, whether they have had cancer or not, should thank Kris Carr for writing this book. She gives us a reason to laugh, while at the same time gives us valuable information and tips about how to cope with cancer and/or the curves that life throws you! I loved this book, and in awe of Kris' strength as she faces her life with cancer.
Inspiring story By A1XIJ9Q8X4PZWL on 2007-08-02
Kris Carr is truly amazing. After being diagnosed with a rare cancer in her thirties, she began documenting her story of survival. Rather than being one of the usual "soup for the soul" kind of book, Kris's Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips relates her experiences with humor and irreverence. I'm not a cancer survivor, but this book inspired me to live life every day to the fullest (and not wait until something tragic befalls me to start paying attention to my world)!
FANTASTIC ! By A3DN7BYMYEYNTY on 2007-08-18
When I first came across this book, I was intrigued by the title: "What on earth is sexy about cancer?" I wondered. I only had to read a couple of pages to get the answer to my question: the thousands of wonderful, beautiful, gorgeous, loving, caring, brilliant, crazy, sexy women who are diagnosed with cancer every year. Question answered! With this book Ms. Carr is lifting the veil on cancer; and it's high time. So many of us tip toe around the subject of cancer. The irony is that everyone is in some way affected by the disease or will be at some point in their lives. In this book, Ms. Carr, in a delightfully crazy, sexy way shares her own incredible journey while at the same time providing "cancer babes" as she calls them, tips on how to tackle their own diagnosis. The book leaves no stone unturned--there are tips for recovering from the shock of an initial diagnosis, on getting the very best medical care possible, dealing with friends, family, dating and fertility. There's even an informative and interesting chapter on nutrition and exercise. Throughout the book, Ms. Carr tells her story and shares her wisdom and experiences with honesty and laugh-out-loud humor. There's an entire chapter on retail therapy! You've got to read this book for yourselves! No review can do it justice. Read it, and I promise it will leave a smile on your face and create a lightness in your soul that will be impossible to shake. And this book is NOT just for folks dealing with a cancer diagnosis; not by any means. It didn't take me long to realize that it's about so much more than dealing with a cancer diagnosis, it's about facing and overcoming any adversity that life throws at us. But, by all means, if you do know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, don't hem and haw and be at a loss for words, give them this book!
At least I know what NOT to look for in a cancer book now... By A1EIA9MC7F81AB on 2007-10-23
I'm sorry I have to disagree with the reviews here. I sent my Husband to pick up this book for me. He said they were flying off the shelf. I however feel like I was suckered out of my money by the hype. I have thyroid cancer and am looking for alternatives to traditional medicine. All I found in this book was the fluffy writing of a wistful Girl, and I consider myself a very spiritual open minded person. But I really don't need to know a pair of boots and lipstick will make me feel better. Many of the important topics are skimmed over such as diet and HOW (She) to actually beat cancer.
She talks about taking enzyme supplements with every meal and it being very important, but does not explain what they are or where to get them. She explains the 80/20 raw/cooked diet.. but does not tell you what cooked foods you can eat. Nor does she mention that they should not be eatin together. The book is also full of referances to other books. Like "Hey I could tell you what I learned but instead go buy this book, and this one and that one and so on and so on..". Her writings often come off manic and frenzied, like a bad infomercial.
If you have the money to burn on buying this book than maybe like Kris Carr (An upper class Girl from New York) you also have enough money to buy many others, take master classes, travel, shop till you drop (as she recommends to heal ones soul) and drop thousands in Health Food Stores, as She did. Personally, I don't. My money would have been better spent on a serious book on Cancer diets.
- For all kinds of cancer
     By A2JZPGOW6VYZOK on 2007-08-22
What's great about this beautifully produced book is that it's not just for so-called female cancers, but for any woman with any kind of cancer - even the kind that usually hits 60-something men. Once you've read the clinical books on cancer, pick this one up. It'll give you all sorts of fantastic tips on everything from handling losing your hair to "cancercations." Best of all, you'll feel less alone.
- WOW! This woman can write!
     By A4GAU0R7X4GCF on 2007-08-26
I ususally do not read books about illness and health calamities, but Kris Carr's book is an exception for a reason - as soon as I picked it up I was hooked. Her voice is clear, strong, funny, moving, and down right unnerving at times! It's truly a page turner, which is a funny thing to say about the book given its subject matter. I also think it is a book that anyone facing any kind of life threatening challenge or even a major life crisis will find helpful, reassuring, and yes, enjoyable.
- Beautiful!!
     By A24UMJMTB927JS on 2007-08-29
Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips is a thought provoking and ultimately inspiring book. I've spent most of my life trying my best to avoid anything having to do with the big "C" and yet the title and design of this book compelled me to give it a peek. I was sold on page one. Kris Carr has had to change her priorities, look inside herself, and now she's sharing with us what she's learned. It's an eye opener for me. It's not depressing or morbid, but an affirmation of the beauty of life and for me personally, a reminder to stop, breathe, and look around. Not only would I recommend reading it, but I recommend it being shared with friends and discussed.

- I can see good intentions, but misses the mark for me
     By A2CZC0PZW3ZF9R on 2008-04-29
As a cancer survivor, I wanted to like this book. I love the idea of a "hip" survival/inspirational guide for women. I am so glad that Kris Carr has dealt so well with a devastating diagnosis. This points to a true strength of spirit. I think the author's heart is in the right place, but something went wrong here. I didn't find this book hip, or funny. It struck a bad chord for me. When I had cancer I too was 31. I didn't go through a decision-making process about whether to tell my esthetician about my illness. I wasn't worried about getting my bikini area waxed. I didn't go on a "cancervation" with my "posse", because I was working to pay my bills and keep my health insurance. I didn't attend retreats and trainings and buy hundreds of dollars of goods from Whole Foods on shopping trips and make a documentary about myself. People deal with trauma and heal in different ways, and spending freely seems to have been beneficial to Kriss Carr's personal journey. Each woman featured in this book talks about her height and weight, and Kris Carr makes numerous references to her own weight and desire to weigh less. It seems the opposite of "empowering", and perhaps a bit disingenuous, for a woman who looks (at least in her photos) radiantly healthy, beautiful, stylish, and very thin to keep making references to desire for weighing less. I'd find it inspirational to hear things along the lines of "I used to worry about my weight before cancer, but since I've changed my diet and lifestyle, my body has changed and I'm very happy with it, I feel very comfortable in my own skin now" (or something like that). When I had cancer, I was more concerned with getting well than stepping on the scale. I'm well and healthy, now, my looks are something I pay attention to but emphasizing it in a book focused on cancer seems wrong. I can't pretend to know what it's like to have the disease that Kris Carr is living with. She seems to be doing something right - a lot of somethings. I respect this tremendously. I'd love to hear more about diet and exercise, more on inner process, less about numbers on the scale and appearance and the things that money can buy. Maybe focusing on this is meant to distract the mind, and I've missed the point!
- A Great Big Thank You to Mz. Carr
     By A2OWU9526SUAWB on 2007-08-08
I am a 58 year old mastectomy cancer patient and could well relate to this book even though it was written with young women in mind. I found this book refreshing and "right on". Mz.Carr's attitude and turn of phrase along with her photographs was so extremely clever and funny. She did not make light of the disease but took all of the horrifying details we all had to deal with and was able to describe them in such a way that we could all say, "Yeah, that's it! That's what I experienced!" and let us laugh about it. Any cancer patient of any age would benefit from this book. I plan to order several to send to friends battling this disease. I am also giving a copy to my oncologist to suggest to her patients.
- If cancer has touched your life, this book is for you!
     By A889YF2FCI0Q1 on 2007-08-13
As someone who has watched as friends and family valiantly fought cancer, this book was a wonderful, touching way for me to gain insight into how to be most helpful and supportive of them during their illnesses.
It's an uplifting, gutsy book that tackles a downright depressing topic, and I'd recommend it to anyone who has been affected by cancer.
- Not just for canSer babes!
     By A238CX9ZI2J156 on 2007-10-31
The first thing I have to say is I don't read. Books that is. People have given me books as gifts, books that they really think I would want to read. And I do WANT to read them, but I don't. I just don't like reading books. But then I got this book. I saw this LOVELY lady on Oprah and immediately ordered her book from here. I read it in THREE DAYS! I couldn't wait for lunch so I could read. I couldn't wait to get home so I could read. That is how great Kris's book is. And its not just for people with cancer. I don't have cancer. I don't even know anyone who has cancer but I loved every moment of this book! I cannot recommend this enough to anyone who wants to be inspired! Get this book!!
- For my Friend
     By A21GTEMS4KLGCJ on 2007-10-02
I was happy to be able to buy this for a friend who was just diagnosed with lung cancer. She is loving the book and I am happy to have been able to do something to make her ordeal easier.
- Great Tips/Short on Manners and Civility
     By AR5UXEY4P4GAT on 2007-10-21
As someone who has lived in good health with cancer for nearly 20 years(I should have been dead 10 years ago)I can say that the author gives plenty of good information about what to do when diagnosed with cancer, but she certainly could have lost the cancer without losing her manners, her grace and her femininity. I can certainly do WITHOUT the profanity and what some readers are calling "irreverence."
- Cancer needs a little humor...
     By A30UER5TETZY6T on 2007-10-26
If you expect a detailed medical guide this is not the book for you. As a thyroid cancer survivor, this book fits the bill in the realm of "Humor". I think all of us can use a little of that whether you are going through cancer or someone you love. I wish this book would have been there for me 3 years ago. My prescription to any new person diagnosed with cancer is a two prong approach: #1 Educate - arm yourself with information so you can make the best decisions about your care. It also gives you a feeling of control when you need it most. #2 Humor - find ways to laugh through the process..otherwise you will just cry.
- A great boost
     By A3JI9OZJH150OK on 2007-10-31
The book is a great pick me up. I've had breast cancer twice and her story is so energizing. It's like a cheerleader...a boost...an inspiration, a "come on, you can do it" book. If you can take cancer and tackle it head on the way she has... how much more motivating does one need? She has a sense of humor and a spirit that is refreshing compared to the whirlwind of cancer and all the garbage that comes with it. I found it invigorating. She gives a whole new meaning to survivor.
- Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips
     By A1HLQ2FIT7HSN7 on 2007-12-09
I am an ONcology Social Worker for over 18 years and this book is one both myself and my patients have found very helpful. IF is full of positive images and words. It is also a book that you can read parts of and still get the conceop. I highly recommend this book to patients and the professionals who work with them.
- Fabulous!
     By A1Q1HZHG6UQ3ZH on 2008-01-17
This fabulous book offers an enlightening and soul inspiring look into what people with cancer are going through. This is not just for people who have cancer, I'd recommend it to anyone searching for insight into what people are going through when they have any type of serious illness. It's honest, real, and empowering. This book is for everyone!
- This book needs an "R" rating printed on the cover!
     By A2BK7TX2JRH8MW on 2008-08-21
I watched an interview with Ms. Carr on Montel Williams and was impressed with her attitude toward cancer. I am walking through stage 4 lung cancer and firmly believe that a positive attitude makes a major difference in the outcome. Couldn't wait for the book to arrive and started reading it the minute it hit my mail box. By the time I hit page 40, I had to throw the book away . . . any encouragement or advice offered by the author was totally lost in the deluge of F-bombs and curse words. What could have been an awesome gift to anyone battling cancer lost all credibility. Buyer beware!
- A very helpful book
     By ABK97S8FZL2M0 on 2007-09-03
This book is very well written. It is attractive not only for it's content but also visually. As a nurse and a woman in the demographic Kris Carr is writing about, I found it very meaningful and touching. I love all the tips about how to make treatment more "normal". This book is full of helpful resources and insights. I may not agree with all the tips and opinions but I give this book a hearty thumbs up!
- DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A DOCUMENTARY? Spread the WORD
     By AEMIRDRTLCM9H on 2007-09-10
Spread the word - the companion documentary should be out on DVD soon. It, like the book is inspirational! This amazing book and film should be in every cancer treatment and wellness center around - and should be read by doctors and patients alike!
- Good Book
     By A1IZ6A5G4UXOX1 on 2007-10-23
I have done alot of work with the Komen Foundation and have spent countless hours speaking to breast cancer survivors and those who hae just heard the dreaded word that changes their lives. Kris has done well with this book as it reaches out and touches those who may otherwise shrink in fea believing they are the "only ones" who feel the wa they do. Any book that can attract a diverse audience on this subject is worth it. There is a weakness or two, as it mostly speaks to thirty-something women, and it really doesn't get to the causes of cancer, which we now know can be overcome. Otherwise, for those who are already there, this is a necessary addition to their support networks. - E. Claverie, Editor, "Forget the Cres, Find the Cause, Books I and II"
- A recipe for livin'....
     By A1ANCBNJO3SX3E on 2007-10-26
Kris' book is not just for canSer patients, it is for everyone trying to live life to its fullest. She concisely gives suggested strategies for creating a balanced, joyful, uplifting life experience. She distills enormous amounts of info into pearls of wisdom. If you need/want more detailed info, she tells you exactly where to go to find it. If you are a canSer babe or dude, this is the bible! Particularly for the newly diagnosed, this book reads like a manual to get you through the initial fog of a canSer diagnosis. Her nutrition chapter is a must-read to get you started on the path to health and well-being. I continue to be surprised at how much information I gleaned from her tips. Kris' book is a life attitude adjustment for us all! Rock on, canSer cowgirl!!
- THE GREATEST GIFT!
     By A2CNJ9GGQVS090 on 2007-10-30
I bought this book for my mother in law who in currently undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer. After she received it, she called me crying, telling me that it was the best book that she had ever been given. She went out and bought copies for everyone she knew that had cancer. She said that it was the greatest gift she had been given since the diagnosis!
- Kris Carr is radiant and inspiring
     By ADTLUVIKGC1GN on 2007-11-02
Crazy Sexy Cancer is like a wise girlfriend, inspiring, insightful, occasionally irreverent, uplifting but without sugarcoating.
Kris Carr, who here shares her story and insights along with those of her eclectic kickass "cancer posse," is utterly lovely and engaging. (Catch her on Oprah if you can find it online-- she exudes peace and loveliness and the art of being truly present. All while facing a crappy rare form of cancer that technically has no cure. Her blog is pretty amazing too.) I do not have cancer but consider myself privileged to have connected with the "crazy sexy cancer" world Ms. Carr shares with us, and am grateful to be able to share it in turn with a friend who is newly diagnosed with breast cancer.
Crazy Sexy Cancer is a great reminder to live authentically, fearlessly, and gracefully, whether you're facing down cancer, supporting a loved one with cancer, or simply (?!) seeking to live more consciously and courageously.
- Living with Cancer
     By AFFZB0LXCIUQ6 on 2007-11-24
I have two adopted daughters and both of them contracted breast cancer when they reached 35. We have since discovered that a genetic defect is the cause (they are sisters). I saw Kris Carr on Oprah and decided to buy the book for one of my daughters. I began thumbing through it before giving it to her, and couldn't put it down. It was informative, scary, humorous and hopeful. It helped me to understand better what they have gone through and continue to go through. I'd recommend it to anyone who is facing cancer with a loved one. I bought it to help them, and it ended up helping me in the process.

- Crazy Sexy Kris!
     By A2YWGD77TNC0GR on 2008-01-09
This is, hands down, the best cancer book you can buy. I not only bought this for myself, but I also have bought it and recommended it for everyone I know who has been affected by cancer. This book should (and did in my case) give many people hope. Unlike much of the initial reading I did on cancer, this made me laugh - a good laugh, the kind I needed, just like many need.
Kris is an inspiration to so many people and she will continue to be. I highly recommend anyone interested in this book to also check out her website and stay on the edge of their seats to catch her film (which I believe stopped showing in order to go to DVD) which is called Crazy Sexy Cancer. She has her own website using the same title as well as a blog on blogspot (same title).
Men also would enjoy this book, it's not just for ladies!
- Love it
     By A2PP35ZB8GPG8Y on 2008-03-15
If you are a young person with a cancer diagnosis, you will love this. It puts cancer into a perspective that you just want to kick its butt. It is an awesome resource and I feel good just reading it.
- Where do I go? What do I do? What questions do I ask?
     By A2S03G38SF8GNE on 2007-10-17
Awesome book, a little irreverent at times but a great resource for anyone recently diagnosed not just young women. Contains a guideline for developing a treatment plan and identifies a multiplicity of available resources. Answers alot of the questions a recently diagnosed person has and identifies both traditional and non traditional approaches to treatment of cancer. Wish something like this was around when I was diagnosed.
