  • Imagination has no bounds....

    By A7HOPR9JYQKKH on 2006-05-04
This new cupcake book by Gail Wagman shows that one is only bound by the limits of their imagination when it comes to creating recipes for a specific area of baking, in this case - cupcakes. Wagman's use of themes, design, color and artistic concepts are unlike anything I've seen. I love cookbooks and am aware that cupcakes are all the rage currently and the market is flooded with books on this subject. I look at all of them and haven't seen anything that can compare with her exquisite presentation, unique ideas, clear descriptions and easy to follow recipes. And the photographs do it all justice. This book should become the gold standard in this area and should be owned by all cooks and pastry chefs whether professionals or beginners.

  • A cookbook to share with others

    By A2SC38RE4DW7DY on 2006-05-14
Buy one for yourself and give one to a friend -- or two. You don't have to be a great baker to have loads of fun with this book, achieve mouth watering results, express your inner self, and awe your friends and family. Ms. Wagman is inspired by the flavors, textures and colors of her own life: the instant chocolate pudding and malted shakes that were staples of childhood in the United States, pastis from the south of France, orange trees in Marrakech, beer and peanuts in a pub in England, Austrian linzertorte, and the much in demand chocolate charlottes enjoyed for years by customers at her restaurant. There's even a cupcake in honor of Yeti, the Abominable Snowman. Surely Ms. Wagman is the J. Peterman of cupcakes. She and her husband Alain Schons have also written Far Out, a basic cookbook for those who want to experiment with African and Asian cuisines.

  • Very Impressive

    By A3JI32G4QAXB26 on 2006-07-07
The first thing I noticed when I opened Cupcakes Galore was the decorating style. For example, the Mint Julep cupcakes has a little straw poking out to make it look like a drink, a black and white yin-yang design, and a cupcake made to look like a crown. After I looked at all the photos, many of the titles were equally eye-catching (Blueberrys n' Creme, Rootbeer Float, and Tiramisu). In addition to all the fun creations, there are many elegant cupcakes suitable for a wedding reception or other formal event. 'Cupcakes Galore' is full of fresh ideas and I am glad to be adding this one to my collection.

  • Great photos, clear directions-- but not for everyone

    By A2MDYNQVNNFP7H on 2006-07-27
The photos are beautiful, the instructions are very user-friendly, and the portions are small (a dozen instead of 36+ cupcakes) and therefore good for experimenting. The downside is if you don't like alcohol, it rules out most of the "After Dinner" cupcakes and a few in other sections (almost 30 recipes include some form of alcohol). If you do like wine, beer, liqueurs and spirits in general, you'll probably love this book! Also, the "Gourmet Cupcakes" and the "Cupcakes Plus" section looked intimidating for an inexperienced baker. Overall, though, there are so many recipes to try, with such beautiful photos, I'd say it is a good buy. :)

  • Pretty pictures, dry cupcakes

    By A1DXI45X5X9OOC on 2006-08-22
The photos in this cookbook are lovely, and the recipes are inventive. However, the cupcakes from the three recipes I have tried so far have turned out dry and crumbly. I don't think the cupcakes were overbaked -- it seems like there was something fundamentally wrong with the recipes. I would recommend this cookbook only to bakers with enough experience and knowledge to make the cupcakes moist.

  • Looks nice, but taste leaves a lot to be desired
    By AKFS3GZMGXUP6 on 2006-11-20
The cupcakes in this book seem to be geared for presentation, but they don't taste good. I would look at this book if you need ideas on decorating cupcakes, but would get the actual recipes elsewhere.

  • Very disappointing
    By A33MIPVE9JZB9L on 2007-06-29
Being an avid baker, I was given this cookbook as a gift from a coworker, and I couldn't be more disappointed in the actual taste of these recipes. I've now tried four or five of them, and each batch has been inedible. I think I have LITERALLY thrown away every single batch (which is probably the only reason I am even writing this review). The first ones I tried, just a vanilla cupcake, I thought I had maybe done something wrong, so I made them AGAIN and the results were just as unfavorable. The cupcakes are dry and flavorless. Even though a lot of the recipes look really good, I'm afraid to waste any more of my time and money trying out recipes that I could end up tossing in the garbage.

  • Pretty pictures... but it ends there
    By A1UHQ6GGKYH67H on 2006-12-21
The book includes many beautiful pictures, but the cupcakes are pretty much meant for their looks. If you are looking for an exellent cupcake book, go out and get the cake doctor book. It has excellent ideas. All of the cupcakes are creative and interesting, but nothing i would go out and immediately make.

  • Beautiful, moist & delicious cupcakes!
    By A1KH0FHJ9551YJ on 2006-11-02
As a big cupcake fan since childhood-- I still stand in line at the trendy Magnolia bakery every time I'm in NYC--I found Cupcakes Galore to be a fabulous inspiration for decorating cupcakes, and the best source I have found for making moist, delicious cakes that are the foundation for the fabulous frostings. I love the tips from a pro and the book is presented in a very playful, yet passionate way--the author obviously loves baking. It's super for both the simple cupcakes-with-frosting of my childhood and for the many fantasy cupcakes for special occasions. Great layout and photos, too! Out of the many cupcake books that are suddenly around, think this is the best I've seen.

  • Cupcakes Yum!!!!
    By A3A25DAB3QYLEY on 2007-01-01

  • Creative cupcake ideas
    By A1E7BYP6JGDUHD on 2007-09-16
I, like many others, am also an avid baker and love to impress people with my skills. Who doesn't like to hear that their treats have made someone's day? I think this cookbook is good addition for anyone who is looking to take their cupcakes, and especially the flavors, to a different level. I have tried only a few of the recipes in this book, and to be honest, have not had the best of luck with every recipe. I found the opposite of another reviewer and find them to be a bit greasy. I feel, with a bit of tinkering, the recipes will be great. The recipe instructions are very straight-forward, photographs are beautiful and inspiring, and the flavors of the recipes are definitely more 'mature'. I think this cookbook is worth checking out if you want to jazz up your cupcake repetoire or are looking for some great design ideas, but maybe isn't so great for the beginning baker.

  • Yummi-lious
    By A2RDEYLHF251HQ on 2008-01-14
I found the recipes in this book to be inventive but easy to make. All the recipes I've tried have been very affordable and easy to make using supplies and ingredients that are easy to find am work with. All the recipes have been met by not only my taste buds respect to their deliciousness but also by those I have fed and shared these cupcakes with. I highly recommend it to beginner to advanced cooks alike.

  • Pretty pictures, awful recipes
    By A4VMQ6ZTSXSSL on 2008-01-28
This cookbook is quite pretty, pictures are lovely, nice glossy pages but....
the recipes are just plain and often awful. Like many of the other reviews these are tasteless recipes. Most of them the amount of time and cost to icing 24 individual cupcakes you could just purchase them at a bakery and save yourself hours worth of work. The Hot Chocolate and Marshmallow cupcake just calls for making dark chocolate cupcakes (which were way too dry) and then toasting marshmallows and putting them on top as the icing. What?!
If you need a cupcake cookbook purchase the Cake Doctor Cupcakes by Anne Byrn. It's well worth the money, this cookbook is not. Just go to the library and borrow it because you will want to return it afterward.

  • AMAZING!!!! A gift that keeps on giving!
    By A3IV3WAZH5S3EB on 2008-02-15
I got this as a Christmas gift and love it. The majority of the recipes are cost effecient and easy to make. The book is filled with clever and creative ideas. The first two recipes I made were the chocolate mousse cupcakes & strawberry cheesecake cupcakes which were a huge hit!
This is a great gift to the baker in your life or a real treat if your a cookbook collector like myself. The book covers basic recipes, kid creations, holiday inspired cupcakes, as well as elaborate and beautiful desserts that are sure to impress. Who would of thought of lemon meringue or margarita cupcakes? I would recommend using Cake flour to substitute reg. flour as I always find it makes for moist cakes/treats.
I am so happy my sister gave this to me, now I am just finding reasons to make cupcakes, I can't wait to bake from cover to cover!!Highly recommended!!!

  • Love this cookbook!
    By A111XGG2SSI85E on 2008-03-23
I got this book for my birthday last year, and have cooked many recipes out of it. It ranges from simple to exotic, and is divided conveniently into the following sections: Grandma's Favorites, Kid's, After Dinner, Gourmet, Holiday, and "Cupcakes Plus," which are other desserts made into cupcakes.

I have yet to strike out! My absolute favorites are the Midnight Madness, After Eight (Chocolate Mint), and Deep Dish Apple Pie. I get so many compliments when I cook out of this book, and it garners a sense of sophistication while still being easy to bake. They also can be altered easily without messing anything up.

If you're looking for a cupcake cookbook, I would definitely recommend this one or 125 Cupcakes!
